On the surface it'd seem like he'd be like the LEAST likely cast member to return, but he's pretty hungry for roles all the time. And this is the one that made him semi-famous.

I'd be happy if they could just somehow work The Wraith as a threat to finally dispense with them as it'd be pretty lame if it's just "The Wraith? Oh, we took care of them 15 years ago"). And of course we have to find out what happened to the Destiny (did those crew come home? what did they find beyond the edge of the universe?).

Surprise, surprise. Amazon pulled the plug on it.

Amazon were concerned that only the existing fans would have watched it? Sounds like they saw what happened when Doctor Who was on Disney+ and the mess Russel T Davies made of it by devoting several episodes to elements from existing 20 to 60 year old lore.

What's the alternative? What Kurtzman did to Star Trek which drove the existing fanbase away?

There needs to be a middle ground.

Stargate Universe also went with the 'broader audience' approach, but it failed at it.

Stargate Infinity was 'broader audience' (or rather 'broader child audience') and also failed.

So there's not many hot examples of it working out

There are ways that the Grant Morrison school of dredging up continuity from decades past can work and be simultaneously rewarding for old fans as well as intriguing to new ones.

Super infuriating, though. There was going to be a Battlestar: Galactica sequel series on Peacock... axed. A Buffy continuation axed. Now this.

When we say 'fans', who exactly are talking about? I read a bit of their plans a while ago and really only the absolute die hard fans would have been interested. The ones who stuck around for all ten seasons of SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe.

But most fans who may have tuned out after the show moved to the Sci Fi channel or when O'Neil took the desk job or the Gou'ald were finally defeated, maybe the caught a couple of episodes of Atlantis, I doubt would have been interested.

What those people want to see is a wisecracking guy, a nerdy archeologist, the smart blonde woman and Worf-without make up, going through a ring to shoot at aliens with an ancient egyptian motif.

Honestly, I think a reboot would have been the way to go. Also, I know people are supposedly fed up up of multiverses but having a characters from the first shows (played by the original actors) crossing over into the new universe. This approach has always struck me as the best way to try and appeal to new fans and old.

On the one hand it kind of makes sense. Stargate: Atlantis, after all, was cancelled eons ago. Cancelled. Because the actual Stargate fans were not enough to sustain it. After that there was just Universe and even those fans didn't turn out because it wasn't enough like Stargate. So to expect more fans to show up than at the end of Stargate: Atlantis many years later now might be a tall order unless they were sure a lot of new fans would.

Obviously there would be ways to do this. Some new threat comes, and new characters have to hop around the gate to new worlds to deal with it. With cameos from old characters.

On the other hand, the animated series Stargate Infinity didn't use anything from the movies or shows other than the Stargate and bombed too

Normally I would favour a continuation over a reboot but Stargate has a few snags that I think would prevent one connecting (beyond the issues I already stated).

Firstly, one of the recurring themes of the movie and various tv series is that the Stargate program is a secret government operation. There was always one episode per season that reinforced the idea that while it was best to keep the public in the dark for now, they would have to go public one day. If I remember correctly Gero's plans involved a public Stargate operation.

Secondly, the finale of SG-1 had the Asgard entrust humanity with all their knowledge and latest technology which included energy weapons and the Star Trek-like replicators. We saw some of this implemented in the later seasons of Atlantis. The military hoarding this would go against Stargate's depiction of the US military being a well meaning, benevolent force (hey, it's fiction) surely we'd have disseminated that advanced tech throughout society by 2026. Again, if I remember correctly Gero's pitch at least touched on this.

A public Stargate operation in an alternate 2026 were technology has advanced significantly is really far from the traditional formula that made Stargate successful. A streaming movie perhaps would work, one that united the core SG-1 cast and a few from the other shows...but a whole series needs to reach beyond just the absolute die hards.

For a Stargate series to work it needs to be a secret air force operation that sends a team resembling that of the tv show through the Stargate to battle aliens resembling ancient Egyptian gods. You can incorporate new stuff in there too but that's the main formula they have to use.

Yeah, the third SG-1 DTV movie was going to be about public disclosure... but it never happened so there wasn't any.

They took all the fun and joy that made SG fun, the cracking jokes and zingers (Star Trek meets Buffy) and turned SG in Ron Moores Battlestar Galactica.

Nothing wrong with BSG, I really liked it. But I watch SG for different reasons. At that point it felt like trend chasing.

I think if SGU was more like SG1 or SGA it would be better thought of. Ultimately, I think it would be still cancelled after two seasons because of Sci-Fi/WWE relationship at the time. To make way for the ECW reboot. much cheaper to produce.

Was there an audience for it? I've watched all the live action Stagates but I've never even thought to seek this out.

I think Star Trek Prodigy also suffered similar issues, but I did watch and enjoy that, I guess Kate Mulgrew's participation made it seem more legitimate.

But the The Clone Wars flourished, bigger fan base, I guess.

I remember when the original movie was released and it was a small but well liked event film of the moment. And as much as I liked it, I'd never have imagined that it would go on to spawn as much content as it has across decades.

And now after all of that, I'm pretty surprised that Amazon hasn't seen this through with a new show - it seems like a no-brainer.

Hooooo boy. We'll see if any lessons have been learned. And it might be a big fat reboot (they're not saying this one won't be) that nobody will care about.
