It was my birthday yesterday and for a gift I got a copy of former head writer and EP Douglas Sloan's memoir, which covers the first five years on Power Rangers

A really interesting read...and an uncomfortable, often at times unhinged one. His working relationship with Jonathan Tzachor is like reading Jim Cornette talk about Russo, and he has a very low opinion of Judd Lynn, probably the most well known and most popular Power Rangers writer/producer, who replaced him during Turbo (Lynn was also a scab writer during the 2008 WGA strike, so that won't have helped him)

Haim Saban comes off as his usual eccentric self in the book, he's your friend so long as you bring in the money, but when the momentum finally drops for Power Rangers and you have two chimps doing nothing on set...watch out

Shuki Levy is a real ally of Dougs'...until he decides to write a blockbuster movie script and Douglas has to shorten it and give him the dreaded 'notes'.

He's real pals with Jason David Frank, but he really doesn't paint him in a flattering light, he's real honest about what kind of person he was behind the camera, and while he does attribute most of that to mental health issues (and brings up what happened to his brother), I didn't come away from it feeling too good about either of them, especially when he tries the 'boys will be boys' defence for JDF hazing people on set.

David Yost doesn't come out of this looking too good in the side notes detailing Sloan's few convention appearances. Sloan believes Yost blames him partially for the toxic work environment in the 90s where he couldn't come out properly as gay and get the help that barely existed if at all back then, so understandable.

The best chapters are the ones dealing with the developments of MMPR season three and Zeo, Zeo in particular just feels like everyone's having a warm and fuzzy time, even the most standout controversy is amusing (the three Triforians)

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Apparently there was quite a bit of drama on set in the early seasons. Zeo is one of my fave seasons though. I still go back and watch that quite a bit. Same with Time Force and Lightspeed Rescue

Did he by any chance say anything about Gregg Bullock?

He talks about him yeah, I was skimming so I might have missed the bits where he was initially hired, but I did read Doug thought that Greg was wasted in the Juice Bar owner role during Turbo

I thought he was all right running the juice bar, but I wonder why they decided to write Ernie out of the show. He last appeared in T:APRM, but at the tail end of it, and you barely saw him. He didn't even say a word. Then when the show starts up again, he's gone.

I heard he left because of health problems. Not only was he overweight, but he was a heavy smoker as well.

I know about that, but I'm not sure he left on his own. Somewhere where Johnny Yong Bosch was posting, someone asked him what happened with Richard Genelle. JYB had said the producers had written him out of the show, and that he was pretty upset about it. I tend to wonder that if he did leave on his own volition, that he might have just been upset about how it was done. He wasn't there for his departure, and like I said, his final appearance was in T:APRM for a few seconds and no lines. It's like with Karan Ashley, who had decided to leave on her own volition, but her last day just involved shooting a four-second season, and she didn't even get to see her co-stars. She said she was told that she'd be given an arc about her departure. They did do that in a way, but she probably thought it'd be done like Kimberly's.

Come to think of it, I guess I should have known that Ernie was gone, since he didn't appear in the opening credits of PRT when it started, and his name wasn't even listed in the end credits. Anyway, I saw the PRT premiere before I saw T:APRM. I thought the movie was going to be something like MMPR:TM, but when I saw the first episode of Turbo and it showed that it was picking up from where the movie left off, I decided to go see the movie later that day.

Because it wasn't released in theatres over in the UK, and because the Turbo Movie looked so cheap, I believed it was just a VHS compilation of a three parter that was going to air on TV shortly after. Imagine my shock when Shift Into Turbo aired on ITV just a few months after I got that tape and it was a different story that just also happened to recap the movie mid-way through.

Should be noted on non-sattelite/cabal channels in the UK, and in regards to the toyline, we were always a year behind on Power Rangers. We didn't get the Turbo show or toys until early 1998.
