I've seen this movie now, it's... Yeah, it's pretty terrible. Weirdly enough the animated parts are decent but when the movie switches into live-action, it just becomes a weird farce.

I saw it.

Wasn't the worst thing ever, but I thought it should have been a lot better.

I felt like Mortal Kombat II from earlier this year was the superior film for its use of an actual tournament structure. Plus, both movies make the flashy egotistic-but-insecure wanna-be jokester the star of the film (Johnny Cage/Ken Masters).

Titmouse Studio did a nice job on the animated flashbacks.

There were some moments where it felt they were trying too hard to copy the 1994 film, of all choices. Especially when Chun Li finally confronts
Spoiler:
Bison and a Tuesday is mentioned.

Best live-action fight was probably Ryu vs. E.Honda
Spoiler:
(which was something of an exhibition bout)

Who the heck is
Spoiler:
"Joe" and why was he good enough to reach the Finals but not worthy enough to be more than cannon-fodder for Akuma?

I suppose Dan was done pretty well.

Blanka was too goofy but fun to watch roll around.

Dhalsim looked amazing but felt like he was in the film by contractual obligation rather than mandated by the storyline.

Guile's motivation and character were really confusing to me.

50 Cent looked amazing as Balrog but probably way too old for the part, and after his big scene I don't think he was heard from again.

The dual villain arcs with Bison and Akuma was an interesting way to frame the plot, especially with the contrast of Ryu and Ken's separate journeys which ultimately come into conflict.

The tension between Ryu and Ken wasn't done especially well. They'd have their feud interrupting by a bonding moment then be feuding again over a slightly different angle than before.

I don't mind the villains winning, but the cliffhanger ending just didn't feel fully earned to me.

I wish the movie had embraced from the beginning that strong fighters in his universe are capable of ki-blasts/energy projection attacks.
Spoiler:
Ryu and Akuma are the only established fighters capable of Hado energy mastery with Bison using technology to tap into those powers. Ken knows about the fireballs but struggles to find the confidence to use it (Ryu's fault apparently?). I don't think Dan ever attempts to squeeze any one out. Guile could do the famous Flash Kick, but without the energy effect. Dhalsim never tries to breath fire. Blanka alone has his electricity attacks because he was "raised by eels."

Thanks for the breakdown. I plan on seeing it as well

My only problem with these movies is they go for actors rather than martial artists. I guess Cody Rhodes at least does wrestling so he does a form of fighting , but overall I wish they would get other guys. Like Johnny cage for example in MK2. I didn’t mind the actor , but go for a guy like Scott Adkins or something that can do kicks and splits and stuff. Rather than an actor who can barely move and needs stunt doubles for even basic kicks.

The original street Fighter was cheesy as hell, but at least Van Damme was in his prime and could deliver some awesome kicks.

I wish I hadn't read some of the spoilers but I thought it's Street Fighter, I don't mind, but I guess I do lol some interesting choices I would've preferred to have watched on screen

Joe is from Street Fighter 1. I've always been obsessed with that game since for the longest time it had no official port and was never included in collections. I love all the SF1 cast, Geki is my favorite

Spoiler:
Is the Blanka eel official lore? I remember as a kid that's how I believed he had those powers, but I don't know if i read it in some magazine, if someone told me since I was likely too young to read magazines or what

I'm pretty sure the Blanka/eels thing was in the SNES instructions for SFII.

I am aware of that explanation for his appearance and powers, I always thought that was kinda stupid (not as stupid the idea that Dhalsim could breathe fire because he eats a lot of curry though, pretty obvious thing to retcon). I like to imagine that Blanka just thinks his powers come directly from eels and that he's really just using his ki to create electric current, like when Ryu does the Denjin Hadouken.

Of course it was. It's part of the "Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection" I got for PS4.

And I suppose it got its first re-release way back in 2006 in the Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

I remember that game being really hard to play.

I was only ever able to play the old PC version as a kid that I remembered fit on a single 5.6" floppy disk. Never saw it anywhere else and I checked a bunch of arcades. For a while I thought the first game was "Fighting Street" or "Fighting Streets," some arcade game I found.

You know the real missing gem with Street Fighter? Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight.

Damn that’s going back lol. Takes me back to the days of Double Dragon. Shortly after Streets of Rage and Final Fight (my timeline might be off here but that reminds me of my childhood)

I think the first emulated version was in 2003 in Capcom Arcade Hits Vol. 1.

I became a big fan of that one as an adult re-discovering cheap NES carts. The final boss run can be a bit of a bear if you lose your power-ups though!

Just saw last night with friends, was pretty good for what it was I suppose, classic story of phony fighting tournament with ulterior purposes, along with stories of redemption plus revenge, and of course open-ended ending for sequel.

In your opinion is it better or worse than mortal kombat (the new ones)

Keeping both franchises on their own plane of existence, I suppose they both had their share of good qualities, authentic factors relating to the games, delving deep into a good amount of characters while lacking depth for a few (which can probably be made up for in the sequels), along with their fair share of corny humor...maybe Street Fighter could have been a little less corny.

I just checked the movie. It was alright. I did like it way more than the animated movie (despite the animation and fight choreography, I just felt it dragged a lot), and definitely waaaaay more than Legend of Chun Li (downright torture), but I don't think it quite reached the cartoony, Batman 66-esque fun of the 1994 live-action movie and there were a few gripes I had. The girlfriend loved it though, so we might watch it again.

Something that struck me about this movie is that surprisingly little of the actual tournament is shown. Most of the fights just happen because of something off on the other side or because something stupid happens, like the bar scene. I think most of the actual tournament fights happen off-screen.

And I guess it's adorably naive that they actually think this awful movie is going to get a sequel, what with the cliffhanger of Bison taking Akuma off for experimentation. There's so much bullcrap in this movie that I'm pretty damn sure they could have managed to fit... Whatever the hell think they're gonna get to do with another one... Into this one if they just cut it down.

Most of the Street Fighter tournaments had some sort of ulterior motive in the games, and just because a character is on the roster, it doesn't mean they were actually in it. Especially when the games are now having 30-40 characters. I mean it's a video game, of course we just see the tournament side.

That said, I would have liked at least to have seen the Vega/Guile match and whoever went against Zangief. They serve no narrative purpose, but it's what we want to see.

This a movie I wouldn't have minded having an extra hour.
