My dog is insane...

I think my dog is going nuts, and I'm beginning to get worried.

Now, as long as I can remember, he's been afraid of storms. But over the years, it's gotten worse.

He's 9 years old now, and over the years his fear of rainy weather, the wind, and the tv glitching has increased.

Now he freaks out even when it's not that bad out: He pants a lot, gets very whiney and clingy, shivers, and tries to climb behind things like the couch.

There's a bookcase in our home in the corner between two of our couches (so it's a somewhat closed in area), he'll go in there and claw at the bookcase...he's even gone in there and tried climbing onto and over the couch.

We're going to talk with the vet next time we visit and see what he has to say...but I'm just curious...

Anyone here who has dogs ever have this happen?

My grandma's dog used to be afraid of the thunder. I don't really remember how afraid... but I kinda remember her hiding under things. Later on she went blind and deaf and thunder didn't much affect her after that.

Your dog's anxiety problem isn't unusual. Some dogs are afraid of thunder, or lightning, or even the changes in the air that might precede a storm.

The vet will probably prescribe an OTC version of Prozac, Paxil, or the some other anxiety medication.

If you look on the web, there are all sorts of behavioral techniques you can try. One website recommends harp music. Hey, you never know. My dog was afraid of thunder, hair dryers, vacuums, and storm grates (the kind on the ground). I helped her get over the storm grate thing by just repeatedly walking her over them. But I never made any progress on the other phobias.

My dog spent the whole day refusing to go to the bathroom outside because our neighbours were out there hammerin' up a shed. She just doesn't much like loud sudden noises and I can't blame her. I don't either. She used to be deathly afraid of umbrellas, though after a couple weeks of positive interaction and cloyingly cheery encouragement, she's pretty cool with em now.

One of the dogs I had as a kid though, as she grew older, she grew a lot more afraid of the most unusual things, like water bottles and the Doctor Who theme song. Turns out, it was primarily because she was going blind... and deaf.

you guys are gonna laugh....but my dog's afraid of light. yep, that's right, light. Well, more precisely, the reflection of light on the ceiling.

She's 3..a dalmation and SO high strung. She's afraid of loud noises and anything out of the ordinary (she barks if any little thing is out of place)

She spends most of the daylight hours, when my blinds are open, sleeping in the tiny dark hallway infront of my guest bathroom. After the sun goes down, it's like everything's fine.

She wasn't always like this....I'm beginning to think I just have a knack for picking out high maintenance animals.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and advice, I appreciate it.

He was upset last night and followed me into my room, I ended up singing songs to him (Muppet songs ^-^) which seemed to calm him down (mom did the same thing another time he was like this).

My dog is afraid of thunder/lightning...sometimes, he jumps off of my bed and hides underneath. Luckily he is a large dog. There is an old bridge in the town that I live in with a park path underneath it. He does not like to walk underneath it, especially when there are trucks on the bridge. He does not like to walk through a sprinkle system that is turned on.

My dog does the whole shiver/pant/pace/whine/clingy/freakout thing during storms too...actually it's nice to know she's not the only one.

Clearly the only logical way to deal with this is to kill the dogs.

All dogs. Everywhere. Because all dogs, they go to Heaven.

EDIT: I'm joking by the way, I love dogs. Now if this was the Gender thread, I wouldn't say I was joking. So, not to offend anyone, but yeah, joking. Don't hurt your pups.

Truly sorry about your dog's condition. I know how hard it can be.

No, this isn't unusual. My dog went insane, too.

Sure, it started off innocently enough. He'd start hiding from thunder. Sometimes he'd freak out if the tv went to static. But it quickly escalated into horrible behavior that couldn't be controlled. He started picking up hookers then killing them, dumping their bodies in remote fields. He started dealing drugs to school children, and joined some cult called "The Disciples of Adremalech," and started mumbling things about "imminent doom" and "the cleansing flames."

Anyway, he was killed in a gun fight with Texas Rangers behind a barn in Pearland a few years back. Kind of sad, really. He had just robbed a Petco outside of Bronson and was making a break for the border. But I guess if he they hadn't gotten him he'd have resurrected Cthulu or whatever that cult was trying to do.

But the creepy thing is that they had to exhume him about a year ago for DNA testing, and all they found was human bones in the coffin...

Likewise. Now I don't need to worry as much, since it happens to other dogs too.
