I don't see April as a mutant. I know they call her a half human half alien mutant. In this series a mutant is a person or creature who has come in contact with Mutagen and is transformed into something else.


And from what we know is that her mother had been experimented on sometime before April was born, so the changes to her DNA may have occurred before she was conceived or when she was in utero.

The only reason they are calling her a mutant is because at this point there is nothing else to call her. And more is likely to be revealed as Donnie and April, as well as the other Turtles and Casey look further into this. And hopefully Kurtzman would be able to shed more light on it as well. Particularly if it turns out Kurtzman is an Utrom.


It would be a good homage to Secret of the Ooze if it did turn out he wasn't really human. Because in early production scripts of SotO Dr. Perry was supposes to have a scene at the end where he opens his shirt and reveals that he's really an utrom.

And that's a scene I can see slipping at the end of an episode the next time Kurtzman appears.

Trying thinking of April as a mutant in the sense of X-Men: People who, while looking human, are born with special powers. Since April didn't get these powers by accident, she's therefore a mutant.

Ciro, if you're still lurking and reading, I just wanted to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for the Kurtzman character. From one fellow longtime Kolchak geek to another, I lovingly salute you sir.

Of many distinct memories growing up as a kid in the late 80's/early 90's, one of my most cherished aside from my blossoming obsession with horror films and all things TMNT was staying up past my bedtime to catch syndicated re-runs of Kolchak: The Night Stalker on WGN. Kolchak became a true unsung hero to me, in that he always saved mankind from unspeakable terrors and things that went bump in the night, with virtually no reward or credit for his valiant efforts.

To think back in the day that I'd eventually see the equivalent of Carl Kolchak team up with the TMNT in ANY capacity is something I never, EVER would have even considered seeing come to fruition. You guys are not only making what I consider to be the finest iteration of the franchise to date, you're essentially fulfilling obscure and unfathomable geek dreams come true, and again, I cannot express enough how grateful I am for that.

Also, let me just say that I'm extremely impressed at all the Alien love, nods to things like Elm Street, Re-Animator, Evil Dead and Lucio Fulci (Suburbs of the Undead!), as well as so many other horror and sci-fi favorites and just how brilliantly you guys infuse all these fun little bits into this wonderful new TMNT world. It's sincerely endearing to me.

Don't let the haters and whiners get to you. This new series is witty, intense, inventive, and so much fun to watch. As much as I loved the original toon growing up and enjoyed the Fox/4Kids series in its own way, I didn't enjoy either back then as much as I'm enjoying this series right now. I've viewed every episode repeatedly with continued enthusiasm and always cherish catching all the easter eggs, winks and homages put into them. NickTurtles has got to be the best example I've ever seen of something paying perfect tribute to its predecessors while excitedly and energetically guaranteeing a bright future for the franchise thanks to paving its own way with such dedicated passion and creativity.

I'm a lurker at heart more than a poster, but I just want you to know that there are definitely fans out there that truly GET what you guys are doing and loving every single solitary moment of it. Right now, NickTurtles is my favorite thing on TV and has been since it began airing. I honestly don't see that changing, either.

Keep up the truly great work, and I will continue sitting down with every episode with the biggest smile ever plastered across my face. You guys are eternally AWESOME!!!

If you guys ever get a chance, watch a series called Kolchak the Night Stalker. It was a short series in the 70's and you can really see Kurtzman is inspired by the main character. I loved the series as a kid.

she is not a mutant in the same sense as the turtles. since her mother was experiemented on, her dna is altered, or mutated. i still view her as human, just with a mutated gene. she still looks human, acts human, hangs around humans. like kraang prime said, april is just in touch with the world in a certain way.

this is almost comparable to doctor falco, before he became rat king. when he extracted rockwells mutated dna, and put it in him, he was not a mutant, just used mutated dna, giving him special abilities. thats how i see her. like no more mutant or alien then psychic falco.

and i understand peoples upset with changing an origin of an important character. but, although you may not like it, accept it for what it is. its something new. this series has shown you can change some pretty significant things while still having it be great tmnt. april having mutated genes is something they liked and tried. some people dont mind it, some do. atleast its something new and not the same old thing over and over again.

while im not a fan of her having psychic abilities, im all for the mutated genes. because, as people have stated before, april has always been a tie to the humans. but to me, that means shes out of place when dealing with foot, or aliens, or most of the tmnts villains. making her the key to the kraangs plot gets her involved. rather than her having to hide the turtles, they have to hide her. rather than her just being caught up in a fight, shes the cause of fights. rather than being a side character in a plot, shes important to most of them.

to me, unlike past incarnations, april is critical to this one. where as her involvement in the past could arguably be taken out for most, she has been thee focus of much this series plots. and all they did to make that was say her mother was experimented on, and she now has an extra sense or two.

When I showed my dad this episode he also reminded me that he looked like night stalker and I was like wow that is an interesting guest star. I was about to say the same thing to him before he said it, but he got to it first. We love watching movies and have a great fascination with knowing what other shows actors were on, it annoys my mom. So April could get her investigative curiousity from a Kolchak like character, cool.

This was a somewhat different episode, was not expecting it at all. The Derpy April made me laugh a bit. April being part Kraang is a pretty weird plot detail, so what she is like Blade or something, all the strengths and none of the weaknesses. Has all the Psychic abilities but able to coexist with humans not speaking in third person all the time plus not looking like a brain with tentacles. I sincerely hope she can get her father back, somehow. I am surprised losing him hasn't affected her grades, at least non that I have heard. Of course like any female seen on TV she is able to go on even with that extra burden put on her.

All this episode proved was that I need to buy more Aprils for the turtles to fight, now we need a derpy April (kidding)

There was a really interesting post on this thread a few pages back about a theory that mommy is actually Mona Lisa. I forget which dromer came up with it, but it would be kinda cool. They were saying that Pat Musick was Mae Whitman's mom in actuality and that she could reprise the role of ML from the OT. She'd make one heck of an ally if this came to pass.

the Kolchak references were awesome. and the Derp April had me cracking up. did not expect that.
