As much as I dislike the Transformers films, it's hard to believe that Michael Bay intends to radically change the premise of the Teenage MUTANT Ninja Turtles.

I'm not opposed to the mutagen/ooze being "alien" in nature. And I'm also not opposed to Krang (or a similar alien species) being directly or indirectly responsible for "creating" the turtles and Splinter and thereby giving them "alien" origins.

If Splinter and the turtles do end up being aliens from outer space, then I'll definitely disagree with the change in origins, but as long as their characters remain somewhat true to their comic book and cartoon counterparts, then their origins shouldn't impact the movie too much. If Batman was from Metropolis instead of Gotham City, it would be an odd and unncessary change, but it would still be Batman.

It will be interesting to see just how different the background ends up being for the new cartoon series and the movie. I would have thought that they would be somewhat similar to avoid confusing children, but I guess the original live-action movie changed Splinter's origins and the kids (including my own confused self) still enjoyed the film.

Not so much that as it is, I think, the modern formula of ridiculously over-thinking the "Origin Story" to a point where it becomes the crux of the movie. Except it's different here because the origin story will be completely different from anything we've ever even considered for the TMNT.

But, as others have pointed out, the title of this movie is just "NINJA TURTLES." I don't know if that's the result of some kind of focus group "Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles is too much to swallow for average audiences, let's simplify!" or "Let's diversify it from Turtle stuff before" or just "'Ninja Turtles' is catchier!"

But the mutagen HAS always come from an alien source, except for Movie 2 where it was apparently man-made, and even then Prof. Perry was supposed to be an Utrom.

Whether the mutagen comes from the Utroms or Krang, that's still an alien origin.

You know it's funny also I was just thinking about the original movie 4.
Does anyone else remember the script?
An alien turtle named Kirby?
Kevin's been pushing for him for years and I'm wondering if it's not going to happen here.

Most of the info and images can be see on the TMNTEntity site.

So you would honestly prefer to see the Turtles possibly be aliens over what IDW did with them, which at least respects the source material?

Really.

This whole concept sounds ridiculous to me, but I know nothing about it. That being said, I'm not gonna speak on it.
Not fair to judge something I have no information about. You're all being RETARDED and I never use that word.
Seriously. Calm down, shut the hell up. Drink a bottle of pills.

Wow!!! This thread is amazing !

I agree with opinions about:
*) Stay calm, still no clear information, and you can not extrapolate anything very important from 15 seconds of advertising commentaries....
Even this part: "When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie" seems to me a nice positive comment!!!

*) I agree that the Ooze may be an alien mutagenic, radioactive waste also. If that´s the real translate of Bay´s comment!

Furthermore:
...if this little comment has caused this earthquake .... what will happen when we have more information? ...

Ever produced so much stress among fans any other TMNT event?

I hope to see this thread in a few years and LOL!!

I agree with Hero on this; plus that Yahoo news article is just a bunch of laughs. Like this for example: "For those a little fuzzy on these 'loveable' creatures: First, it was a cartoon. Then it became a live-action film franchise in the 1990s. "

Ah yes; I remember when Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman weren't the creators of this franchise..wait; who is Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman? Where did those names ever come from?

Heck Robbie Rist has even spoken out against this. I guess he has blown his chance of reprising his role in this movie.

Actually the old cartoon changed the origin, the movie was using the original comic origin.

Yeah. Sorry, I wasn't clear on that. I meant from my perspective as a kid, I was first exposed to the cartoon where Hamato Yoshi mutated into Splinter. So, to me, the first movie "changed" the origin - although obviously it simply reflected the original origin from the comic books.

One last time... this is not Michael Bay's movie. It will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, it was written by Nemec/Applebaum and the ACTUAL producers are Brad Fuller, Scott Mednick, Galen Walker and Andrew Form.

And even if the movie blows, it won't affect your favorite cartoon. It will not infect your DVD's with anything, they'll still play just great.

*sighs*

And once again, people are jumping to conclusions. Let's just calm down and wait and see where this goes. We might be surprised by it.

As a diehard Transformers fan who's read just about every article about the things Michael Bay arbitrarily chose to destroy in the films, let me tell you that he manages to get his greasy little fingers into every aspect of production and essentially take it over. He's a big enough name that if he wants to get his way, he'll get it, whether or not he's the screenwriter or director.

I absolutely agree that we should just chill out and wait until we hear more, but there's no doubt in my mind that he has enough pull to change just about whatever he wants. And knowing Michael Bay, he'll want to change stuff for no good reason other than because HE thinks it's a good idea.
