kya: you're gonna think he's a bad person. He's NOT. Beto loves me. He's my big brother. I was his ward until I was 21. I know that it's probably not too healthy that when he looses his temper like that, but I don't live with him anymore.... He's a GOOD man. He LOVES me. He never MEANS to hurt me; he just gets mad... accidents just happen.

You've said that there should be no more bullying. I know you love your brother. And that he probably loves you just as much, but that does NOT make hitting you OK.

*Don takes a deep breath to steady his nerves*

Don: Kya, I don't know if anyone has told you this before, but I think you really need to hear it.

*he reaches up and touches her chin to bring it up, ensuring eye contact between them*

Don: It was not your fault. You don't have to be sorry, you have nothing to be sorry for. What your brother did to you...what my brother did. None of it was your fault. I know you hear me saying this, but its more important that you believe it.

SP *closes the door with a sigh and turns back to Leo who is looking both embarrassed and terrified. He sits down next to his son* Leonardo, I have never seen you act so recklessly or irresponisbly. I understand how worried you must have been, it is part of being a leader. But in some cases, you must allow me to deal with it as I see fit.

My actions were wrong. My judgement in error. but my arguement with Kameko is a reasonable one, I think.

(Leo stared into his father's eyes and waited for judgement)

Beto's not that much older than me, but he took care of me AND mom after the accident. ALL I HAD TO DO WAS BE GOOD. that's all he ever asked of me. Beto took good care of us.

(her eyes are overflowing, but she's got control of her voice again) You hear all kinds of bad things about "MACHISIMO" ... macho... but there's good things about it too.... it means that as long as one man, one brother or uncle or grandfather is alive in the family, you have a GUARDIAN. a protector and provider. Beto tried so hard... he finished high school that year and got a job right away. he proved to the welfare people that he could take care of mom and me both. he kept us in clean clothes and under a solid roof...he's not perfect, but he's FAMILY. all he wanted from me, in exchange for everything he did for me and mommy was to just be good...

(she's not speaking clearly through her tears anymore)
