All future versions prior to Murphy writing Tales seemed to have NY flood free. I think along the way Steve Murphy borrowed that concept from the Archie books.
It's been confirmed that the depictions of the Mirage Universe's future are all alternate or possible futures which explains some of the contradictions we've seen in depictions of the future. The penultimate issue of Tales V. 2 seals that as the case.
So we don't know how the characters or their world end up. While it'd be fairly poignant to see them live their lives it would be symbolic of how the turtles have essentialy become so engrained in pop culture that they'll never truly die to leave it open.
Doesn't need a tragic one either. If if we saw the death of one turtle or all of them it needn't be a sad event. Raph may die happily as a crotchety old turtle surrounded by his brothers and whatever extended family he may have.

Agreed on all the above. I was about to ask you guys on whether the Turtles' future is so fixed like that, like it seems to be with, say, X-Men and other mainstream series. (As Berger said in his editorial in Tales 69, it's a vision on what could be, not what will be, correct?) Because, frankly, between Karai kidnapping kids for cliched evil purposes in her old age and Leo deciding to have his freak on with Radical just because, there should be a possible chance to avoid all that, if need be.
Since Mike isn't around in the distant future -- feel free to correct me, as you guys are more familiar than I am with later Mirage canon -- maybe the finale would focus on that in some way, or the Turtles separating or end up at another crossroads again, vis-a-vis, "City At War"? Or, cross my fingers, Mike'd say, 'screw it, I'm going to be a sitcom writer.' Then he'd help write the 87 series, and the circle is complete.
