This is just my opinion but I do feel that these episodes filled out Raph quite a bit. The brutish, ball of anger from Turtle Temper would have never admitted to his phobia being a huge team problem...but he did. Because lessons learned, are lessons kept as far as this show go. At least that's my POV.
And while, yeah, Raph was a bit of a wimp in Cockroach Terminator, he had one of the best one on one fights in the show yet and conquered his fear to kick some butt. That makes him pretty beastly ain't it?

I think the problem is that Raphael isn't being treated in the most traditional manner. Yes, he likes to hit first and ask questions later. Yes, he does get angrier faster than the others. However, they're not trying to carry the early Mirage or first movie Raphael's anger issues on forever and ever like some of us would expect. They've combined a bit of his wiseguy sarcastic attitude from the FW stuff into this new version while retaining his tough guy attitude. What that's done is give him more personality than before.
While I know that it's weird to not have Raph always being like, "Leo said this, so I'm gonna be a crybaby about it and go do something else!!" all the time for a couple seasons, it's actually a breath of fresh air in the same sense as the other new personality quirks that come with the rest of the Turtles in the new show. |

I basically like the fact that anger issues aside, Raph is basically the voice of reason of the show. He basically looks like a normal dude that was trained in ninjitsu to kick some ass... and has to put up with a leader that recites corny superhero lines... a nerd that's always correcting everyone's grammar or wrong facts, and Mikey. Like when Leo let one of the bad guys go because he had enough. Raph kinda relates to the audience when he said' not a threat? THEY WERE BEATING UP A BLIND GUY!!'
For people that just want Raph to be pissy all the time and hate Leo, we had the two Karai episodes for that.

Gotta admit, Astin's Raphael is probably my second favorite Raph. Like Kendamu said, it takes equal parts FW Raph and EVERY OTHER Raph to make a Raph that is more than just "The angry one."

Yeah, aside from some extremely minor nitpicks, I think this is actually my favorite version of Raph because, like others said, he is an interesting mix of all the previous Raphs. Maybe the writers don't entirely know what to do with him in his episodes yet (a point I don't really agree with, personally), but even if that's true, I still think they've done a great job making this Raph unique and yet still clearly "Raphael", so it doesn't bother me.
That being said, I'm more interested in where the writers plan to take him with Casey's introduction - with the way this version of Raph interacts with Leo and Mikey currently, I'm wondering if Raph and Casey's relationship will disrupt that enough that he loses a bit of his 2012 uniqueness or if they'll use it to add more dimensions (personally I'm hoping the latter).

I don't think so, my brother loves this version of Raph, so they must be doing something right.
