They ARE how they are in the cartoon, besides the costumes. No one would have bought the figs if they were the regular turtles with sporting goods. Leo had the scooter, Don had the bike, Mike had the board, and Raph had the blades.

We should all be glad they didn't make a Snow Boardin' Splinter >_<

They did not have to make them wear costumes. They could've made them in "extreme poses" to go with their extreme gear.

Realistically speaking, I honestly think we had all best get used to the idea of multiple variant figures.

Think about it. Remember being a 5 year old kid. Convincing your parents to buy you more than one Michaelangelo figure was hard enough. Imagine if they were all, basically, the same, with only a slightly different sculpt or pose? No way parents would spend money on them. And make no mistake, most TMNT figures are likely being bought for little kids, or at least Playmates is going to market them that way. Multiple variants will help them ensure the viability of the line by constantly having new, distinguishable versions of the same characters for people to buy. A parent walking down the aisle at a toy store isn't going to think "Oh, a new version of Donatello for little Michael," they think "I don't recall seeing Michael playing with that particular figure, perhaps I should buy it for him." At least, that's how my parents thought.

They're going to keep releasing variant figures so they have some visually distinguishable figures on the shelves, just like the old line. And just like the old line, I'll be passing on them. But I'm sure enough people will buy them so that the line stays alive for a while. It's marketing and economics, people. If 10 people already have a normal Leonardo figure, 6 or 7 of them will be more likely to buy a version of Leonardo wearing a cowboy outfit than another version of Leonardo in his regular gear with a different face.

naw guys
in the new ToyFare they say those are as far as they are going to go from the classic look. The next figures coming out have removable armor from stuff they would find around the sewer or junkyard. But they will be on super posable bodies.

::nods:: Oh yeah, you'd think that Playmates would be taking notes while watching what Mattel is doing wrong with the MotU toyline by making like a dozen different variant He-Man & Skeletor figures a year. I read somewhere though, mayb on the TMNT site, that Playmates won't be making a ton of variant TMNT figures. All I gotta say is I hope this is true, & that we see an (in scale) Leatherhead figure & maybe a Snailman figure if the gods are willing.

Actually, seeing some figures from that episode when Donatello meets that Kirby guy would be pretty sweet, same with those giant mutants that live underground. That'd be cool too.

WHOA! You're right! I just noticed this when you compared the pictures together. That's messed up dude.

Yeah, that's kinda true. As a kid, I was a crazy TMNT buyer, maybe even more then with Masters of the Universe figures, but that is mainly because when I got into TMNT I was about 8 or 9 maybe, with MotU I was like 6 or 7.

I do recall over the years getting various variant TMNT figures, like Sewer Samurai Leo, Space Cadet Raph, Midshipman Mike, the Wacky Action turtles, Undercover Don, etc., so parents do buy them for their kids. Now, did I hate these variants? Hells no, I loved to play with them just as much as any other TMNT figure I had. Heck, I didn't even own a regular Leo, Mike or Don figure as a kid, all I had was Raph, then I got variants of the other turtles.

::nods:: This is very true, plus seeing a ninja turtle dressed up as a cowboy is just too funny to pass on. But, Playmates should still go easy with the variants. If the Batman or the new MotU toylines have taught us anything, is that clogging the isles with variant figures is not good business practice. Playmates can make their variatn TMNT figures, but just don't need to go crazy with them.

Issue #73 or #74 I think, which ever is the most recent one.

(P.S.)
Hey, how does everybody like my avatar? I took the snailman drawing from Peter Laird's Blast from the Past website & used Adobe photoshop to color it in & scale it down. I had no clue what color he was planning on making Snailman, so I just used my imagination a bit.

Well with MotU they have a very simple goal: A version of He-Man and Skeletor in every wave. While it may reek of overkill (especially how close to each other the waves are released), each wave does tend to disappear from stores rather quickly (where I live anyway). The idea is that every child should be able to own at least one version of He-Man and one version of Skeletor. Mattel isn't expecting that everyone buy one of each figure (like me, heh), they just want SOMEone to buy them, and they are.

Again, parents who buy these aren't going to distinguish between "Ice Armor" He-Man and "Jungle Attack" He-Man, they just know whether or not little Jimmy has a He-Man figure. Likewise, most little kids don't care which He-Man they have, as long as they have *a* He-Man.

Of course, I was quite an aware little kid, and my father loved buying me He-Man stuff almost as much as I loved getting 'em, so I ended up with about half the original He-Man line, but then I was special.

The only questionable thing for me so far is the inclusion of two He-Man variants in the current wave. Other than that, I don't really mind because I get why they're doing it. They're not killing the line, if anything they're trying to stretch it out. I mean it's been a year and we still haven't seen a few of the main characters. Seems pretty smart to me. Keep 'em wanting, keep 'em buying.

A good point, & well made too.

:nods:: Yeah, that's true. The only He-Man & Skeletor figures I owned as a kid, were Thunder Punch He-Man & Terror Claws Skeletor, & I didn't care that they were variants. To me they were, just as you said, *a* he-man & skeletor figure to own.

::nods:: Yeah, true. Well, actually, thinking back to the old toyline, they only had about 4 differen He-Man & Skeletors over the entire run of the toyline. Now, has times changed so much that a toyline cannot survive if it doesn't have uber-large amounts of variants in it? I would think, that the old toyline lasted as long as it did without the use of variants- it's strong diverse character line up helped sell toys, not 20 different verisons of He-man or Skeletor. I'm not saying stop making variants, but maybe tone it down a notch or two. What do you think about this Leo?

I wouldn't mind seeing them scaled back a bit (my wallet wouldn't mind either), but at the same time I like seeing what the Horsemen come up with. It seems like they have a lot of fun designing these variant figures, and I'd wager that's why quite so many exist.

Back in the 80s, the He-Man phenomenon was so huge that literally anything with "Masters of the Universe" on it would sell... not so much, now. I think that's also why every wave has a He-Man and Skeletor... to keep the wave "close to its roots", so to speak.

I do think the line could survive if they were scaled back a bit... maybe one every *other* wave instead of every single wave.

Heh, yeah, I think they do like making all the different ones. But yeah, I can see saving money would be another reason to loose some of them.

::nods:: Aye, that makes some sense to me. ::shrugs:: I dunno, I just wish there was a way to keep from extra variant he-men & skellies from clogging shelves, you know?

::nods:: Yeah, me too. Or, if not that, maybe make 1 Skeletor Variant & 1 He-Man variant & include them with every wave that comes out for a few months. So, instead of having Ice-Armor he-man in one wave & then a different he-man in another, Ice Armor he-man would be in like 3 or 4 differen Heroic Warrior waves. That way, a variant would still be coming out, but there would be less of them, in a way. ::scratches head:: Does that sound good, or worse to you?

Sounds fine to me.

For some reason my area can't hang onto He-Man figures. At the Toys R Us in Freehold, usually the ONLY He-Man figures they'll have at any given time is like 2 or 3 of whatever the current variant is... and that's it. The rest is vehicles and whatnot. Most of the other stores are the same way. The variants don't "clog up the shelves"... usually one or two of them linger on the otherwise barren shelves where He-Man figures once sat.

So I guess they sell really well over here in Joisey. Heh.

Yeah, actually that's how it is at most TRU's, Wal-Mart's, KB's & other MotU carrying stores. There won't be any of the other figures for the wave, but there will be a plethora of the current skeletor or he-man figures there. The only place that has ALOT of He-Men, is at Planet Comics, a local video game store (former comic store) that has like several dozen of the normal, Smash-blade, & Jungle Attack he-man figures for sale, all reduced to like $2.99 each just so people will buy them. The reason I think they had so many, was because they charged like $11.99 for a normal figure & about $14.99 for a deluxe one. People might spend $11.99 for a secondary character, but not for a he-man variant I guess.
