How do you feel about the high likelihood that the first Quasar we get in the MCU might be Phyla-Vell instead of Wendell?

Lol damn this slate really messed you up. What were you expecting? This isn’t even the entire “first chapter”.

I’m pretty shocked people are complaining. They covered the gamut from A-lister to C-lister and announced an entire connected universe, essentially.

“a Batman movie - sort of”? What is “sort of” about it? It’s a Batman movie…
Just seems like you’re desperate to disqualify everything however possible tbh.

I'm aware of the Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon, but The Brave and the Bold is traditionally an ensemble book that only sometimes includes Batman. And Gunn is big into those old books.

Now, I'm sure Batman will have a decent size part in it.

Gunn said Brave and the Bold is a “father and son Batman movie”. It’s a Batman movie. About Batman and Robin. The DCU version.

Did anyone else here actually listen to or read the announcement before getting excited or extremely pissed off?

Yeah, I don't understand the confusion either. Seemed pretty f*cking straightforward.

I'm not too thrilled about it though, but at least they're moving forward with something. It's hard to be excited right now without knowing much of anything about these projects. Still butthurt about Cavill and Affleck, so whoever they get to be in these roles have big shoes to fill.

I'm not convinced DC is saved or on the right track until we see something. But it is at least a little reassuring that they realize the importance of Superman and Batman. But overall, a lot of these projects just feel random and with no real direction like we had with Snyder and the whole Darkseid thing. I also don't know how I feel about them doing Supergirl this early either. Feels kind of forced.

I think Supergirl is just, "Well, we have this new Supergirl from Flash, and that tested really well so..." Which is fine. If Gunn feels strongly the actress and character are going to connect with people in The Flash then better to get a project with her going than to wait 5 years and then see, as has been the strategy so far. For all we know she was the test audience's favorite part of it.

It's a bit "interesting" that she is the "Woman of Tomorrow" and Superman himself is "Legacy," though. But that may be looking into this too far.

Also, no actors playing 2 characters in the DCEU and let's do Aquaman 3, so that blows out the stupid Momoa as Lobo rumors. Even though Momoa as Lobo wouldn't have been the stupidest announcement amongst that list.

Just found out Creature Commandoes was a legit comic book from back in the day written by J.M DeMatties, who's best known for Spider-Man classics like Kraven's Last Hunt.

The couple people in here flipping out don’t even know what’s actually on the slate. Kinda telling. I think some people just want to be angry.

I think it's pretty dumb to have two new Batman at the same time. So they retire Affleck's Batman, but we still have Matt Reeve's Batman and now another brand new Batman in this Damian Wayne movie? Isn't this kinda dumb, especially since we have a new Superman? They could have just worked Matt Reeve's Batman into this new bigger universe since it was a reboot.

I mean this is the same mistakes they were having before, now having multiple versions of the same character in movies in different continuities. And then this is in addition to the sequel of The Joker movie which is its own thing as well.

No, Matt Reeves was never going to play ball with that.

Elseworlds stories are cool. You get the benefits of a shared universe and the benefits of creative-freedom at the same time. Batman, being a versatile character, is well suited for this.

On one hand, it is strange to see such a constantly revolving door of actors playing Batman, but if the market supports it and the quality is high, it’s only a good thing.

Honestly, he announced more than I was expecting at this point and I'm on board for it. I want DC to do well. Hopefully they can finally crack it this time.

Creature Commandos is a very out of the box choice for the first project and I think safe to say on no one's radar.

Waller getting her own series is good (and good writers attached). This feels a bit like some of the early New 52 stuff where a series that was already planned has been moved to the new universe. Since they confirmed it takes place between seasons 1 & 2 of Peacemaker we know it's not a full reboot (more on that in a second)

Superman: Legacy - the big relaunch (they called the previous 2 series aperitifs). There's a lot riding on this and they need it to connect with the general audience in a way both Superman Returns and Man of Steel didn't manage to do. The description they gave is generic but also says they're going for a more classic interpretation of character. I'm optimistic. Yes, Cavill was done dirty (they even said as much at the press event) and I would have loved to see him get another shot under a new director, but after the years of back and forth and changing plans I'm more than ready for a fresh start without the baggage of the previous era.

Lanterns - not the Berlanti series (after all those years in development that's now dead). Sounds like a different approach, starting grounded with room to go much, much bigger as the DCU story unfolds. Again, really hopeful for this.

The Authority - all I really know about them is from the recent Morrison mini series and PKJ's recent Action Comics run. Again, not a project I would have expected but definitely something that will expand the universe and heroes that will be an interesting contrast to the more traditional heroics of Superman and the other JL characters.

Paradise Lost - THR lists it as a prequel series to the films, the quotes from Gunn and Safran never actually say this, just that it's set before Diana is born. Good way to start setting up the Amazon mythology whilst they figure out which direction they are going to go with WW herself.

The Brave & The Bold - honestly not sure why they didn't throw Batman before the title or even just go with Batman & Robin (1997 flashbacks aside). Bruce and Damian plus more members of the Bat Family will make sure it's different enough from Reeves & Pattinson's films. Will be nice to get that more comic book Batman with the extended family.

Booster Gold - honestly this one feels in Gunn's wheelhouse and I think will work in a series far better than it would as a movie.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow - not sure if this will be Sasha Calle or not, I like how they are positioning her rather than making her a Clark clone (something the TV series was guilty of at times) but honestly not a fan of that King story. Hopefully it will work better as an adaptation.

Swamp Thing - I was enjoying the Wan series before WB killed it after the AT&T buy out so I'm curious to see what they do here. Again, not something I would have thought of as "phase 1" but DC's "chapters" are bigger than Marvel's "phases" (at least their early phase 1&2) and we don't have the full Chapter 1 yet so there's almost certainly something that these off the wall choices are building into that we're not seeing yet, plus it's good to see they aren't afraid to go deep right off the bat. The last thing anyone wanted was another round of JL origin movies.

As the for this year's films - it pretty much sounds like the door is being left open and how hard or soft those character's reboots are depends on how things go this year (hence why there's no Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash or Shazam announced). Specifically speaking about Momoa they said he viewed Aquaman as a trilogy, he also loves Lobo, he won't be playing 2 characters, and they will figure it out after Aquaman 2.

Basically if the films make mega money (or the audience really love the character cameo in the case of WW) then there's a chance they could come back with a soft reboot. But if not they have the option to do a harder reset. Or it could simply be the decision has been made but they don't want to confirm it (or announce projects that would confirm it) before those films come out.

On continuity it's not a total reboot, Flash resets the universe, after that Blue Beetle is stand along enough it can be part of the new DCU and Aquaman 2 apparently leads to Superman somehow but 100% only canon begins with Gunn & Safran's first project.

Based on that I'm guessing that for any returning actors it will be a similar situation to Daredevil in the MCU. The history is probably very close to what has already been seen but not exactly and you won't need to have watched those films and shows to understand anything that comes next.

Doesn't surprise me with how WB and DC milk Batman for what it's worth.

Many of us in those circles basically feel that's a foregone conclusion. It would suck, especially when married against the fact that it would be amazing to see such a deep cut character on-screen in the first place, but then they'd SJW the character. Phylla is a disasterous mess. Avril a close second.

I think that's the thing about pop-culture with deep fandoms that you don't understand. You are sort of demanding further research over a topic that people are either going to be into or they aren't. At this point only some solid trailers or actual production info might draw people in if they don't like something. It's pop culture - it's supposed to be fun and most people don't want to have mental consideration over bull$#!( like this. They get excited or they don't....

This echoes my sentiments as well, pretty precisely.

My only thing about the Brave & The Bold thing is that given Gunn has talked about "younging up" DC on film I imagine TBAB to be a Damian Wayne launchpad for the most part. Not a fan of "offpsring" or "cross generational characters" myself. But hey, I've got a pretty long Batman run including the Morrison books, so maybe this will be my excuse to get rid of them, so there's that.

Good news for other people here though - they can finally get that glowing green Swamp Thing Nightlight they always needed in the lower outlet near the door of their bedroom.

Bro, you made an ass out of yourself. Just own it and move on.

If you want to roll your eyes at people and insult them for having a different opinion on a movie slate....take the time to know what's on that movie slate. All the info was readily available. No one expected you to be the expert until you adopted the attitude of a 14-year old girl and got sassy.

You say something like this, which highlights how misinformed you are, and then say it's my fault for expecting people to know what they are talking about. That's rich, man. RICH lol.

Yeah, it sure seems like that's the case. It just seems a bit cowardly, since by the same token there is no guarantee that the "new" projects on the slate will fare any better than, say, Shazam 2 or Aquaman 2. I'd say just commit to it all now or throw it away.

Which was a bit of an announcement itself. A lot of people have always been assuming that's what would happen, but now they're coming out and saying it. And that's a bit of a spoiler, isn't it?

What I'm most curious about is if this was always the case. If The Flash was always going to reset the DCEU, or if this is something new, say, Gunn introduced.

Most of these announcements are for TV shows that will probably just have 8 episode seasons. It's not really a big deal. All the older CW and HBO DC shows are all ending or over and they're just replacing them with shorter shows.

All that really matters are the movies. Nobody is going to care if a Booster Gold TV series or a Amazon island before Diana was born show does well or not.

Your response is 100% gaslighting man. You are so butthurt that most people don't like this movie slate that you are digging in really deep here. This whole "expert" thing is born of your manuevering, not mine. I never claimed expertise, and surely finding out about a "Batman" movie release four hours after the announcement instead of right away does not put a chink in my conversation armor at-all.

Your whole response is ridiculous. It doesn't even remotely match up to the conversation I was having. Go grab your Mossman He-Man figure and suck your thumb in the corner until you cool off. Nobody is happy with the film slate, or bare minimum nobody understands this outline when measured against "Universe building". Go read a 30 year old Swamp Thing trade to get ready for the DCU heyday happening 5 years from now. You'll feel better.

It's okay Aqua. It's okay. shhhhhhhhhh..... Here man - I'll make you feel better so as to be effective, okay? "AquaParade you know more about DC comics than I do, and you are infinitely more informed about this sucky DC Comic Movie-slate than I am. And that's probably because you needed something to create excitement but it sucks so badly for me that I didn't "Do the movie-announcement research" needed to be able to actually tell you that this slate sucks".

There now you are the expert of James Gunn DC property slates. Congrats. Except for the fact that most of these announcements that you've made inextricable from your being for some reason actually suck!

I love you, man. Aqua you... are awesome and informed. About the James Gunn DC Comics movie announcements. Big thumb's up. Love you man. Congrats on your big moment.

Exactly. But some people here -ahem- "jumped the Gunn" so badly that they are freaking out that this whole announcement is nothing-burger suckiness.

"Gaslighting" is the most abused term these days.

What happened is you said something incorrect, with attitude, and got corrected. That's it.

You can feel however you want about the slate, but don't have attitude when you don't know what you're talking about & don't play victim when you get called out.

I'll tell you again that no one expected you to know there was a new Batman movie....until you decided to insult people who felt differently you. As seen here, for example:

Why would you say something like this when you don't even know what's on the slate? What an overreach. How bizarre is that.

You know someone is really melting down when they accuse you of "gaslighting" them for correcting their misinformation and calling out their poor attitude.

Am I the only one here who is seeing this guy talk total crap over a movie slate, only to realize he doesn't even...know what is on the slate?

No one expected this guy to be informed. I just expected him to only speak - harshly - on things he was informed on. And then pulling the "gaslighting" card??
Idk, just weird.

Look how bad he wants the Swamp Thing joke to stick. Several people had to inform him that Swamp Thing isn't "D-List", but he's reverting to that over and over with me, because he doesn't want to discuss the rest of the slate and how misinformed he was. That's him trying to divert attention away. Pretty transparent.
I'll humor it though. I love Swamp Thing and this guy needs a win.

------

Anyway, I think this is a great slate, personally. It appeals to my tastes, what can I say.

The writers they have on board are an interesting mix of great and awful though - they have Drew Goddard alongside Christina Hodson. The next big step is seeing who they get lined up to direct. That will be a big deal to me.
