2k3 on Nicktoons!

I don't understand why people are shouting, "Blu-ray! Blu-ray!" This show wasn't created in HD, or even widescreen, and it'd take some video enhancement and restoration for it to be put on Blu-ray.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want that, but it's just not a very realistic expectation.

When this series went ignored for so long, we're lucky it's being put on tv at all. I won't hold my breath for a blu-ray release unless somehow the Nicktoons airing becomes immensely popular [which we all know won't happen :V].

Blu-Ray is so overrated in my opinion. The original cartoon didn't even get a blu-ray release, and it doesn't need one. Hell, no cartoon series I know of has ever gotten a blu-ray release. I dunno why people can't be content with good old fashioned DVDs!!!

Justice League has a BR release, and so do most if not all of the films in the DC Animated Original Movies line. 720p really does look better than 480, even in cartoons. I do agree though that the quality difference isn't significant enough to warrant the higher prices. I rarely buy BR, I only have a few of them.

Yea, whenever I see the prices of movies on Blu-Ray compared to their DVD version, I figure I might as well just get the DVD and save myself some cash.

For me, the main appeal of blu ray is the scratch resistance. Guarantees the disc will last a helluva lot longer. But of course, I only want it for the things I absolutely love and intend on keeping and rewatching time and time again.

...this is a good point. The larger capacity BR discs are far more resistant to scratches than DVDs. Obviously PS3 disks are BR and they feel much smoother than DVDs, and don't scratch like DVDs.

Don't Forget the space, the entire series could be put into 1 maybe 2 discs, while DVD would require a lot more. Also more space for extra stuff.

Also at least here Blu rays are often 5€ more then the DVD version, and the DVD version has almost no extras at all. If we're lucky we might get an audio commentary track and a teatrical trailer.

Correct m8. For those with physical storage issues BR is always preferable. I guess their larger data storage space is also part of why it's so imperative that the discs have that protective coating to make them more sturdy than DVDs - there is so much more on them so if one was to become defective it would be a far bigger disaster than if it was a DVD, at least for TV shows.

I think we'd need about 10 discs for the show though. There were over 150 eps and I'm assuming true HD for a 20 min ep would be...what about 2 gb approx?

I'm not a huge BR enthusiast myself - one's as good as the other, to me, I ain't picky - but as far as prices go, a LOT of good stuff on BR has dropped in price to the point where it's as cheap or cheaper than DVD. Over by me, a lot of movies on BR are at Best Buy for $5-10, and even TV shows and cartoons in season sets are around $20 or less, pretty close to DVD prices. The only thing I still see crazy overpriced are Disney flicks, and they're always about $10-15 more expensive than everything else, Because It's Disney and they know they can get away with it.

But yeah, prices are getting more reasonable so I've been slowly getting more of them. I don't have a huge preference though.

Yeah, BR has always seemed unnecessary to me. I mean, the quality's better. Big deal. I honestly can't tell the difference. It looks VERY slightly crisper than a DVD, but otherwise, there's really no difference in my eyes. Plus, as Skeleton Man said, why would they make a BR release of a show that wasn't made in HD?

A lot of cartoons do get blu-ray releases, but for older series it depends on the condition of the source material and/or whether they put the effort into restoring the picture. Often it doesn't make a huge difference, but it can if the picture quality's good enough - blu-ray will be a lot clearer and sharper.

Of course something from 2014 is going to look better than something from 2000. I've seen DVDs that look just like the quality over on the Blu-ray side of your picture.

Well, sure - again, it depends on the quality of the source material and how much work was put into restoration. That screenshot's of a (restored) episode from 1991, so it stands to reason a show from 2003 could look even better on blu-ray, if the right work's been put into it or the source material is in good quality.

But still - blu-ray is (or can be) visibly better than DVD. Whether or not the difference is important or noticeable varies per person, but the difference is there.

Who knows? Maybe if 2K3 does well on NickToons, they'll dare to air on on the main channel.

It's not like the show was animated on cells and stored on tape. Like many of the cartoons produced a decade ago, much of the work done on this show was done digitally, on a computer, which is obvious based on the CGI vehicles, the digitally inked characters and backgrounds, etc. What we got on T.V. and DVD was of course presented in standard definition 480p, but that was due to the constraints of the mediums at the time, not the show itself.

I'm pretty sure the producers and video editors of the show wouldn't have been foolish enough to archive it in 480p. After all, Justice League (2001) and What's New Scooby Doo? (2002) were eventually released in HD in one form or another, so I don't see why TMNT deserves any less.

You can see 23 seconds in that the characters are digitally inked.


Yes, DVD is alright, but I think the show would benefit a lot more from a Blu-ray release due to the greater storage capacity, higher bit rate, resolution, durability, etc. Although it could be unlikely for the show to be released on Blu-ray at this point, by Nickelodeon nonetheless, personally as a Turtle fan I wouldn't want one of my favorite shows of all time to only be restricted to an inferior and outdated format, when it may have been possible that it was produced to hold up for future formats.
