Or why we had so many cheaply made fan service shows that pander to the smallest and most dedicated niche of Otaku viewers is because those are the shows that are most likely to make a profit, and even then most of them don't. A lot of those shows completely fail and it's only if the studio can follow up that failure with a success they can stay afloat. But this is the case for some studios, but even more successful studios such as Ghibli are suffering because the creative minds that have made them great in the past such as Miyaki have retired, or passed away such as Satoshi Kon. Some anime I've noted to good that don't rely on fan service. Here's some examples I can offer, and I know I can find others. FullMetal Alchemist. This is a mainstream title yes, but it has good animation, a well rounded story, strong and developed cast of characters. And no camel toe, panty shorts, or underage jubblies in sight. And there are two versions of this anime (One was created before the manga was finished, and the other follows the manga itself) and depending on how your view it, one or both of the versions will appeal to almost any anime fan. Original anime release 2003 Brotherhood Adaption 2009 Basic Premise: Edward and Alphonse Elric turn to alchemy to bring their mother back to life. Unfortunately their efforts cause Ed to lose left leg and right arm (right arm sacrificed to bind Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor.) Fitted with an automail prosthetic arm and leg, Ed joins the Military under the guidance of the Flame Alchemist, Colonel Roy Mustang. And seeks out the legendary philosophers stone so they could reclaim what they had lost. Dead Man Wonderland Anime first aired 2011 Deadman Wonderland is maximum security prison that doubles as a theme park and all the prisoners are put into lethal obstacle courses (such as a gauntlet of swinging axes), fights, and other unpleasant events all the amusement of park visitors. On the day Ganta Igarashi's middle school class is going to visit Deadman Wonderland as a field trip, a person simply referred to as the "Red Man" appears and slaughters all of Ganta's class mates. As the only survivor of the massacre, Ganta is charged with the crime and sent undergo a death sentence at Deadman Wonderland. Usagi Drop. Original Airing: 2011 While attending his grandfathers funeral, 30 year old Daikichi discovers a six year girl named Rin, who he soon learns is his grandfathers illegitimate daughter. The family sees Rin as an embarrassment and treat her as an out cast. Annoyed by his family's behavior, Daikichi takes in Rin and raises her as if she was his own daughter even though he is single and has no experience raising a child. And finally "Your Lie In April" Original air date: October 2014 Piano prodigy Kousei Arima dominated the competition and has become famous among child musicians. After his mother, who was also his instructor, died, he had a mental breakdown while performing at a piano recital at the age of eleven. As a result, he is no longer able to hear the sound of his piano even though his hearing is perfectly fine. Two years later, Kousei hasn't touched the piano and views the world in monotone, without any flair or color. He has resigned himself to living out his life with his good friends, Tsubaki and Watari, until, one day, a girl changes everything. Kaori Miyazono, a pretty, free-spirited violinist whose playing style reflects her personality, helps Kousei return to the music world and shows that it should be free and mold breaking unlike the structured and rigid style Kousei was used to.

Back on topic: I'm not sure if my brother had a crush on April or not. I imagine he did, but he never really said it out loud to any of us.

That's par for the course here on the Drome, though.
I could care less about how April feels about her love interests, but she did say she was creeped out by the way Donnie and Casey were ogling her in the latest episode, so that should give you some idea.
