Disturbing Moments In TMNT Media (Various Spoilers)

"Michelangelo's Birthday" is a pretty dumb episode overall, but Shredder is especially twisted in this episode. Strapping Mikey into his flush-o-matic torture device is strangely hilarious and disturbing all at the same time. His bravado about his dirty deed when he makes a deal with the other three turtles to give him a ride is quite unsettling, and the whole episode concludes him him basically turning three of the turtles into brain dead balloons. I mean... Shredder finally wins! The only thing that saves the turtles from a demeaning fate worse than death is the ridiculous plot resolution conceived by Bill Wolf & Eliot Daro.

Yeah, Shreeka's incident was interesting and a change after the goofiness of previous seasons. As for Splinter, they had it coming after their remarks about being overworked (and even went back to after "The Big Blowout"), though he really gave it to them under the Rat King's control a few episodes later.

I remembered some more incidents.

- Shredder locking the president of Octopus in a room and brainwashing people in "Corporate Raiders from Dimension X".
- Donatello nearly killing Shredder in "Night of the Dark Turtle".
- Dregg nearly shooting Leo and Don in "A Turtle in Time".
- Berserko shooting at the Turtles and company in "Get Shredder". Berserko later tortures Krang and Krang himself admits that he destroyed Berserko's home world.
- Shredder poisoning April with a plant in "Enter: The Fly".
- Karla talking about being hunted in "Hot-Rodding Teenagers from Dimension X".
- Splinter deciding that he's better off as a rat than a human in "Splinter No More".

That last one is just kind of weird. From what I can remember, his reasoning was something like "Screw the benefits of a human body, if people don't have the time or will to help out a random dude who smell like a sewer, then I'm better off as a mutant rat".

Disturbing moments eh? Hmm for me anything in the 2k3 series to do with Baxter Stockman. He is just a crazy psycho... Gradually as the series went on he started to give me the creeps.

Uhh, I don't think Creepy Eddie was killed, dude. He was some kind of demon from a different dimension, just like the Dream Beavers.

I will throw some suggestions out there, although to be fair I'm sure I could think of plenty more. These aren't all specific moments, some are general musings on characters and the recurring themes in their personalities.

Haven't read the entire thread because I'm just too out of it for that, but I will repeat the point I made in the other thread. It isn't disturbing per se, but I find it uncomfortable to watch Raph lunge AT A GUY WITH BLADES ALL OVER HIM in the final fight against Shredder in the original film. Yes, this goes on in the comics too, it goes on in all iterations, carelessness and bravery is a staple of martial arts films. And it's Raph - he's emotional and acts before thinking. But he tries to fly kick a guy with blades on various parts of his body. He could have been cut to ribbons.

I also find it somewhat disturbing to see a "government agent" almost salivating over the prospect of dissecting mutant curiosities when Bishop captures them originally in 2k3.

Biggest thing that got to me in Mirage was Gabrielle's death, and the way that Casey's happiness (which he'd already struggled for) was absolutely ripped away from him. Like he was given a second chance and then - out of the blue - his wife dies in childbirth. And he's left in a doctor's office to just ponder it. Yes, this sort of thing happens all the time in reality but seeing it on the page just got to me. To be fair he did get Shadow out of it, but that was probably no consolation in the immediate aftermath.

In the original show, there's something seriously fvcked up about the way some human characters are horribly mutated yet don't even seem to show signs of missing their humanity. The likes of Bebop & Rocksteady generally don't seen to realise that they were once human and have lost that. Mutagen Man and Baxter pine for their lost humanity (and the former gets it, ending up better looking), so they're more believable.

In 2k7, the fact that Splinter seems to think it's acceptable to send Leo into the jungle and then give him a medal when he comes home is wacky. No wonder Raph hit the roof - the rest of them stayed behind and faced what was going on in NY, whereas Leo goes away to be a vigilante in Central America (no different to Raph, then, just doing it in another country) and Splinter rewards him for it. The same Splinter who frowns on Raph when he learns he's Nightwatcher.

The fact that, deep down, Donnie probably thinks about what might have been is also quite upsetting. Not so much in the beginning of Mirage (where's he's depicted as really smart but it isn't over the top), but certainly in other iterations, he's a guy who's smarter and more knowledgeable than practically any living being ever to exist. His genius would seriously change the planet as we know it. If he was human his intellect would be celebrated to levels even Einstein could only dream of. Instead he's forced to live in the sewers like a leper, simply because humans would be scared by him. He sometimes saves the world but the humans who benefit don't even know it.This is a guy who rarely outwardly shows signs of this remorse (although we see signs of this resentment towards humanity in FW) but given how smart he is you can be sure it's there. Of everyone in the franchise, Donnie is the biggest case of "what might have been".

The fact that, in 2k3, they smack Mikey on the head and constantly berate him, including sensei. Really irritates me and is probably a factor in his almost sociopathic behaviour in later seasons.

What Shredder does to Leo in the City Fall arc of IDW is some of the most disturbing stuff you'll ever see happen to a sentient being. Basically robbing the guy of his mind, brainwashing him using mystic arts and fvcking with his head to the extent he doesn't even know who his family are and he keeps having visions of his mother, who died centuries ago.

Mirage Splinter eating a rat was he was in feral mode is somewhere up there on my list. Also the realization in the mirage comic that Master Splinter didn't raise the the turtles out of kindness and to teach them ninjutsu to defended themselves but to raise them to carry out a 15 year old revenge plan assassination of Oruku Saki.

That dude can be seriously twisted when he wants to be. No joke.

Yeah, that topic has been debated but not enough given how controversial is is. It's truly screwed up.

I can't say he's twisted for eating the rats in City At War. He basically had no option, and he'd held out as long as he could. With the Rat King's persuasion as well as sensei's insatiable hunger he just broke. Personally I think most people would have broken way before he did.

That's true but him hallucinating that Rat King was talking to him before finding his rotted corpse did not help the fact.

It would be interesting if in the next adaptation, that Master Splinter was written to be more like a anti-hero and while the Shredder is chaotic neutral or morally ambitious. It give the entire show such gray tone. I would really love to see that done.

True, but Splinter wasn't to know that. He was so spaced that Rat King was real in his eyes, rather than a figment of his imagination.

I'm assuming you meant to type 'morally ambiguous'. A morally ambiguous Splinter would be great. Although going by your annoyance in that earlier post I guess you could say he was morally ambiguous in Mirage - teaching young kids how to live but at the same time training them for a revenge mission. I guess in your eyes he wasn't morally unambiguous, but a straight up sociopath.

Edit: I misread what you wrote. You meant a more morally ambiguous Shredder, I think. Well, either way, a Splinter who flirts the dubious line between what should and possibly should not be crossed would be fantastic.

Maybe for once, their beginning of independence/coming or age won't come with Splinter's death but instead it will come from standing up to him and calling him out on his bull ****. Possibly even moving out and finding a new purpose that will give their lives' meaning.

I am not saying the turtles have to disown their master but more like for them say "Sensei, I'm a man and I need make my own decisions despite your own misgivings, okay?"

Bebop and Rocksteady liked being mutants, which is probably why they didn't care. Remember in the ep Krang gives them a hologram to make them look like their human selves again, they say something like, "Oh its only a hologram, I was worried there for a second." because they don't want to be humans again.

Besides I always figured Bebop/Rocksteady's "junk" was still humanoid in their lower regions. I mean the whole bottom torso of their body resembles human legs and pelvis except with animal skin.

That's true. They put Splinter on a pedestal and sometimes seem afraid to question the guy. This obsequious nature isn't good for them. Raph is the only turtle who ever really questions Splinter, and that's because he's Raph.

True. I was just thinking it was because they were so intellectually impaired that they didn't actually understand what had happened to them. Shredder even makes light of the situation when they're mutated: "you will probably struggle to find a date on Saturday night", or words to that effect.

If their private parts were still unaffected, that's a cruel irony seeing as they would never be able to use them with human females. Sort of like how Joseph Merrick's penis was unaffected by his condition.
