Everything in the game is half assed and sh*tty. Anybody with a half a brain that see's the game for 2 minutes will know that.

Trust the majority on this one.

Diversity of opinion and diversity of taste is an important fact of life. Especially when it comes to video games.

James Harvey at Worlds Finest Online wrote one of my favorite early reviews of the game:
Quote:
Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up for the Wii is not the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game 25 years in the making" as advertisements claim it to be, but it's still a great game that comes Highly Recommended. It's just fun and entertaining from the get-go. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans should definitely rush out to pick up this game, though skeptics and casual fans may want to rent the title before purchasing it. Ubisoft has done a very admirable job with the game, even taken into account some of the missteps listed above. The game is quick to pick up and incredibly addictive, and with a host of different modes and unlockables along with a great online mode, it is sure to keep fans playing for quite some time to come. I'm positive that if you give it a chance, like me, you'll definitely become hooked to the rip-roarin' fun of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up!"

And Audi over at Hardcore Gaming 101 recently composed a solid, balanced critique of the game's shortcomings:
Quote:
So is Smash-Up a bad game? Well actually no, it's quite good honestly, even great at times. There are things to recommend it which travels well for gamers, even those who are overly familiar with Smash Bros. The graphics are great even though the art design is a bit bland, the stages are a true blast to play with and the diversity between them is great and the core game has been smoothened and improved with more balanced characters, no tripping feature and better online interface. Being so similar to Smash Bros, the multiplayer aspects of the game remain equally as strong in terms of sheer gameplay.

But it's the teasing of a greater product than what we actually got that makes it so hard to fully accept. For a game that relies so heavily on another series which celebrates itself by including characters from all generations and places, the bare bones cast of essentials really doesn't do the job of celebrating the rich franchise which it could take advantage of, and it isn't helped any further that it was stated so many times to not be tied down to any particular version of the TMNT but still be so underwhelming to only make use of the 2003 and 2007 designs with not so much of a hint of any other iteration besides the cutscenes. There isn't much in the way of cameos either, quite the contrast from TMNT Tournament Fighters 15 years earlier and its long list of cameo appearances.

Ultimately, the game suffers from the Ubisoft pattern of restricting its games within the norms of the genre rather than embracing the potential of the license. Even with all the hype and excitement they were able to generate, they still are only able to offer what is a game that is only good due to prior games it is based on, not what they are able to bring to the game to move it forward. The overall audio design apart from the voice acting is also weak, with sound effects and music being almost ghostly and unattendant.

My advice to potential buyers of any game is to examine the most thoughtful reviews that other people have written and then give the game a chance. If you're skeptical about it, try to pick it up for as cheap as possible. And if you're a fan of other recent TMNT video games, you shouldn't raise your expectations too high anyway.

I would have been fine with the immensely stupid short roster, even with the 4 rabbits I'd never ever play, and a second Raph.

But the controls kills it completely for me, turning around is a battle between me and the controller, and sometimes it feels like my character lives it own life. Played it once, and haven't looked at it since.

I'll might pain through the game with the remaining turtles, since I only did story mode with Leo. But now I have better games to play

I have the PS2 game. I've played it a few times, but I don't really care for it.

Actuallu just got it for the PS2. I had played it before on the 360. It's a lot more fun with a group of people. Like Super Smash brothers.

I've played it twice, and haven't been too impressed.

I unlocked April's belly shirt alternate costume. I prefer that design over the yellow jumpsuit with the corset.

For those still interested in playing, the TMNT gaming forum Turtle Dojo is now accepting entries for its Spring "Battle Nexus Tournament." Also, its one of the only places on the web you can still actively set up online matches.

And no, the game is certainly not the amazing anniversary game spectacular that it was advertised as, but it does have a fun factor if you're playing with friends. The single player modes get kind of boring after a few run throughs.

Nothing about this game bothered me more than the lack of characters. I remember the trailer where we saw the technodrome stage the first time, my excitement was peaked. Then the very last character reveal trailer at the end they said "Oh, yeah. There are a few more characters, you know, the surprises." I was expecting ratking, Baxter, rocksteady and bebop, usagi, anyone really. But no, we got not one, but 3 rabbids... Very upsetting.

Don't forget the turtles in their weird alternate costumes!

I think Ubisoft even did a "reveal" trailer for Skateboard Thrashin' Mike and Cyber-Shredder. Those sly devils...

Yeah the marketing and roster were abysmal. Whoever was in charge of either should be burned at the stake.

I was dumbfounded that the Shredder's alternate costume was cyber shredder and not OT Shredder. That would have made the technodrome stage even better. Instead of a bunch of mediocre alternate costumes, they should have just used different skins. Comic, 1988 toons, 2k3 toons, hell throw in next mutation for good measure, THAT is what this game should have been. It is fun with friends though.

^^ Yeah I agree. I remember when the drome first caught wind everyone was so excited with everyone speculating the roster. Never in a million years would I have thought Rabbids would be in a TMNT game...

TMNT: Smash-Up. The one Drome Forums thread that never really goes away!

Ironically, I finally got around to picking up the Nintendo Power issues that featured content on this game. The November '09 issue gave it a 7.5 out of 10, both praising it and criticizing it for being a watered down but highly playable Brawl clone.
