Black people see themselves in Knuckles because he's tough, confident and punches to get things done (hence his name), and as I said, the hair looks like dreadlocks. That's why when it comes to characters who are animals or aliens, you see black people say, "This character is black."

In the Dragon Ball fandom I see people say it about Pikkon, Piccolo and nowadays Hit. In the Pokemon fandom people try to claim Brock is black even though he's based on a South Asian.

Piccolo is not black, all the countries that had DBZ before the states including Asia, Europe and Latin America considered him a demon first and then an alien, since that is what he is, I mean if they want a hero they already have Mr. Popo.

Knuckles is clearly Mesoamerican based on his roots on the CANON games, if we go by voice actors then Sonic is black. The closest thing Knuckles ever had to being black is his rap song:

Basically, it's exactly the same as the first film.
