Pretty awesome trailer. They showed a lot of King Kong unlike the lead up to Godzilla 2014 where his design was a total secret.
Hopefully that wasn't all the Kong footage in the movie

to be fair, there isn't much you can do with "giant ape" as you basic.

I think we'll see a good amount of Kong in this, if only it's because it's the same crew -- mostly -- behind the Godzilla remake and they're all inching toward their coveted shared universe.
It's a bit funny, though. You think about things like Transformers, the PD TMNT movies, Godzilla 2014... the original movie comes out and there's more humans than Transformers, TMNT, or Godzilla, everyone whines, and the sequel comes out and everyone goes, "They learned from the first one, there's more [insert titular character(s)] in this one!" but it's really not that at all. Wonder what happened to the Universal Monster shared universe? Dracula Untold was supposed to be Chapter 1 of that. Not even a whisper about it anymore.

My last comments on Skull Island were on the Godzilla 2 thread and I was mad and not excited since they got rid of the original idea of "Skull Island" prequel of King Kong that dealt with the island and not Kong but they changed it to another Kong movie to fit it in to the Godzilla monsterverse. They didn't even let them use dinosaurs in the movie since Universal told them "we're already doing Dinosaurs in Jurassic World" but....ey
I've made a full 180, and I'm super excited for the film. I'm still mad at the above however I think I'll be able to enjoy the film for what it is; A new take on Kong and one that embraces the "awesome giant Kaiju" instead of making it serious yet boring and still silly as hell like Godzilla 2014. I hope Godzilla 2 continues the trend that Kong seems to be taking. I'm not saying that a serious take can't be made, Shin Gojira did it last year perfectly but G2014 failed at it so it should have fun with its crazy kaiju take instead. |

I thought the movie was cool. I was disappointed at the lack of dinosaurs but then I realized they'd be pretty small in comparison to this new Kong. However, there was a triceratop skull in a scene and that line that Kong was still growing makes me believe that there was a time when Kong was smaller and fighting dinosaurs. Especially since he's been around for a pretty long time.

I personally would have liked the replacement "dinosaur" fight be Kong vs Rodan. It doesn't even just have to be a full fight, just good and long enough to hype for Godzilla 2

They also give them an "out" to explain the eventual King Kong vs. Godzilla. King Kong? He's "still growing." So presumably by 2017 he is the size of Godzilla? Sheesh.

--- Though one good question some have brought up, is there something going on behind the scenes of Monarch. Are we even sure they can be trusted?

I thought Skull Island was pretty good - I had a great time.
I will say; I think it's time for a moratorium on Creedence Clearwater Revival in Vietnam movies, at least for a little while. They didn't use Fortunate Son I suppose, so it wasn't the biggest cliche possible, but still... try something else. Spoiler:

so up to date, King Kong/Godzilla timeline
-1934 A tanker was washed up on Skull Island, probably nothing important -1943 John Goodman is the sole survivor of a monster attack, and it is covered by the goverment -1946 Monarch is founded While the 43 incident probably had a hand in the creation of Monarch, it is worth to note that Monarch was founded prior to the 54 Godzilla incident. -1954 The first Godzilla incident -1973 Kong Skull Island It is mentioned of old cave paintings portraying Godzilla, Rodan, Ghidorah, Mothra -1999 Meltdown in Japan -2014 Godzilla While the 43 incident probably had a hand in the creation of Monarch, it is worth to note that Monarch was founded prior to the 54 Godzilla incident. Question is what was it that forced the foundation of Monarch, and what attacked in 1943 and if it will be brought back up?

I thought it was a great adventure flick. The beginning was kind of dull, but once they got to the island that was where things really started to pick up. I felt like I was there with the group since I was watching it in 3D. John C. Reilly's performance also really stood out.
