But the real reason I suggested that thes bootlegs are coming from the same basic factories as the official versions is the logistics of producing so many figures. Many of these bootlegs show up nation wide, albeit in limited numbers. Realistically, they have to have production runs in the thousands. You aren't going to make a thousand figures without some substantial equipment. It would also make sense since such a factory would have ready access to molds to use in bootlegging. Even if companies like Playmates keep the molds after their production runs are over, there are likely to be early molds that were disgarded due to quality issues or older molds that have reached the end of their useful life span. A factory or factory worker could keep such molds and use them for bootlegging. This could also help explain why you often see bootleg toys cast in strange colored plastic. If you are trying to make a quick buck at the factory, would you pay to buy more of the appropriate colored plastic or just use whatever you have left? As for why the articulation may differ. It seems fairly apparent that at least some bootleg toys are made from new molds. And again, who would have the most access to the equipment and experience to make new molds? I would think a factory that produces toys to begin with would be a likely suspect. Agin, this is all just spectulation on my part. But from an economic standpoint, the most likely person or group to have the opportunity, the experience, the equippment and the resources to not only make and ship toys on a large scale, but to do it on the cheap, would be a factory that already produces those same toys. |

Re: Random light up red bulbs in bootleggs
I was reciently at one of our pathetic bootlegg dollar stores and found a Spiderman action figure bootlegg that has one of those EXACT light up features.
We tend to forget that, while these are just a joke over here, other countries sell them because no one can possibly afford them, especially since most of the price must be import fees.

Hey can we get a moderator to change the name to "The official Bootleg Toy Thread" and sticky this thread? Awesome thread, I forgot it existed (I think the name threw me off, "bootles"?).

Here we go:
A pretty neat figure, like all the others in this series, except for the fact that his legs/knees bend both backwards and away from the body, so putting him on the bike is quite hard. |

Update! For roughly $6, I found this multipack:
Back: The turles are made of plastic (not rubber)* and therefore they can't hold their veapons. However, I don't care since now I finally have a Foot Soldier! *Note the obligatory red light on the Turtles' chests Also, I'm not sure if you can see it, but in the bootom right corner it says: "Dark Malfasaint"... Sounds French to me! |

Now that TMNTGal has posted in here I think this is officially the bootleg
master thread. Everyone has posted great bootleg pics in here. Now I just wish those awesome knock offs were as widely available as the original toys. The search continues for the talking turtles... Well I did some eBaying and this was the only ko worth noting, I almost didn't post this but it seems like the entire figure is translucent, maybe I'm just seeing things: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...9972&rd=1&rd=1 Last edited by BigApple3AM; 02-10-2007 at 05:45 PM. |

I want bootleg turtles!!!
so I checked on ebay, and found this! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/11-KARATE-TURT...QQcmdZViewItem I aint gonna buy it though, frankly I cant afford it right now... is that 'Funky ones' an original mould? I dont recognise it as being a copy from offcial figs... they look so cool! in one of the RPGs in the RPG thread, I created a new turtle, called Tortuga (yeah I know, highly original) and he had the same weapon as the yellow one! The karate turtles are great, how cool is the packaging?!

Someone should seriously sticky this and call it "The Official Bootleg Thread." These pics are just so damn entertaining!

Another interesting find a few days ago. Playmates didn't care enough to give us Jim Lee Leo but the bootleggers did.

Although it's worse quality I HAVE to have that figure! Where did you find it tmntgal and are there more?!!?!?!?!
Do you know if that's Leo's original mold? I have Jim Lee Raph but I could barely tell if that Raph was using the same mold, the legs seem the same but the upper body being painted green threw me off. If it is the same mold I think I would invest in equipment and stuff to cast it so that everyone can get one in better quality. I've seen people cast he-man figures and gi joe parts that were never actually released at retail but prototypes were produced. |

They are goofy looking but I got them anyway. I do like the card art. There was actually enough on the pegs to get 2 sets. There were a couple extra Donatello's but I felt I got enough. I'd be willing to trade my extra set. These are much smaller than the playmates version and no where near as detailed. They're just enough to pass for the Jim Lee style. |

Found this on eBay Germany. It's one of the wackiest bootlegs I've ever seen:
