TMNT Posers?
Not really a big deal... more something I laugh at than anything else.
I've started wearing this TMNT hoodie around since about January that has old toon logo across the chest and sai patches on the pockets and I've gotten, since then, some innumerable amount of compliments just about everywhere I go. A lot of them are from people who watched TMNT once upon a time but some of them I think are too young to know (unless they dug out an older sibling's VHS tapes) and compliment me anyway or they just tell me my shirt is cool because it's cool to say that my shirt is cool. Understand? I don't either. But you'd think that if someone stopped you to say your shirt was cool and was asking you if you were going to see the new movie as if he'd knife you if you said "no" that he'd at least remember what color his favorite Turtle wears. None of this "I like Donatello because he wears blue, has a bad attitude, and nunchkucks rule" crap. I dunno. Not really a big deal but maybe it's something that others have ran into. I can understand someone who hasn't sat down with anything TMNT related since the old cartoon was popular forgetting what the Hell he was talking about. But some of these people like to talk to me like they're some kind of TMNT QuizWhiz and when I try to break the ice with something simple I get "Was Shredder the rat or the warthog?" or "Krang was that girl that hung around with April, right?" Any thoughts or experiences on this funny little trend? |

Been there, been there with tons of band shirts.
"DURRRRR what Hot Topic did you buy your shirt at" it's called a concert jackass try going to one sometime. It's where people who like the band go to, and not pretend to like it because the logo is cool. I get hella comments on my TMNT wallets. People always say "I have a TMNT jacket!" Wow your cool now. Or they have a little kids TMNT backpack ugh. People don't even watch the damn show they just have it because being "retro" is cool. Morons... |

Yeah, I have that same jacket and I too get compliments.
It's sad because I love the jacket but I HATE Hot Topic. :[

I got mine for Christmas from a specific Hot Topic location that, at least when I last visited there, still catered to myself a decent bit. But the "new look" Hot Topic is getting company-wide is going to change that.

I try my best to avoid Hot Topic mostly because of the emo/goth/crybaby culture that has sprung up around it. The only shirts I've ever bought from them are a Friday the 13th shirt and an Evil Dead shirt.
Anyway, what I think qualifies as "poser-wear" are those shirts they sell of old 80's cartoons that have the images intentionally cracked and faded. Ya know, so the shirt looks like they had it in their closet since 1989 or got it handed down to them by their older brother. Anybody who'd go to that length to look "old skool" is a serious tool, and I am not the kind of person who uses the insult "tool" all willy-nilly. Only where it truly applies. And those people are MASSIVE tools. |

I also hate those T-shirts that the front is of an old concert shirt and the back just had the bands name instead of tour dates.

1) If it's something like a TMNT shirt, how much of a fan are you? 2) Are your old shirts that are legitimately faded fit for a 5-year-old (hence, you can't wear them anymore and wonder why you still own them)? 3) How much does it cost? If you're not a fan, you have old clothes that fit already, and the shirt is expensive then it's dumb to buy an old faded shirt. But, anywho, TMNT posers. Anyone else ever ran into them? |

I don't consider people who compliment TMNT stuff despite not having what we would consider basic knowledge to be posers. I simply think it's awesome that such a HUGE majority have just basic, fond memories of the Ninja Turtles. That Eastman and Laird's little black and white comic book could go on to have such a positive worldwide influence is just amazing and I'm content with just that.

I could see what you're saying. It's just odd that the guy would question me about seeing the new movie like he's this big TMNT geek that would put me to shame in any aspect of TMNT knowledge and then when I try to start a simple conversation with him it turns out that he could very likely confuse Rocksteady with the Turtle Van.
That's what I'm getting at. |

Honestly, I just humor them and let them say their piece, smiling and nodding and all the while thinking, "Yeah, if only you had any clue just HOW much I know." THen I go on with my day, amused.

oh, and as for the "2) Are your old shirts that are legitimately faded fit for a 5-year-old (hence, you can't wear them anymore and wonder why you still own them)?" lol i have one of those shirts from the first movie, and i have worn that so many times in the last 17 years, that it is now the consistancy of tissue paper, and i actually can still fit it because it stretched so much

Well, yeah, I said it was more funny than anything else. It's not like I lose sleep over it or anything. I tend to lose more sleep over playing "TMNT & Other Strangeness" and then having to catch the second playing of "Bleach" on Adult Swim because I played for so long.

hehe I was helping one of my friends paint some rooms in her house yesterday and the commercial came on. She laughed and said "I remember those old ninja turtle movies" I said yeah, I went to see them a dozen or so times I guess.
She stopped cold. "you saw them...you were a ninja turtles fan? That's a guy thing!" She was talking about all the 'killing' and 'blood' ...which, I only saw a couple of the old toon episodes and KNOW from what I read here that that was not true for that time...the movies were not gory...LOL She knows nothing of the comics... I never missed a beat painting. "yup, and I still am...wanna come to the new movie with me?" |

Tons of people buy shirts of stuff they don't know about or barely know anything about, it can be annoying but its not that bad. Also if you buy a shirt of something you don't have to be a super hardcore fan, I own various band t shirts were i don't know the name of all the band members, I love way too many bands to remember that but a hardcore fan might think that is "pose". Of course if i bought a band shirt and only knew their radio hits or "a few songs" that would be poserish.
but yeah, with retro stuff people are going to buy something "oh i used to love them", i'm sure of all the retro Nintendo gear I see most people didn't buy a gamecube etc, or who is wearing that zelda shirt doesn't discuss the timeline of the series on a forum etc. as for Hot Topic, they sell some cool stuff but they're prices are too high, and its true people that shop there are posers, real goths/punks/emos wouldn't shop there but that is another topic entirely. i don't understand when people say the store is "scary" or "for punks/goths/emos" its just any other corporate america store owned by Gap, its no different than Aber Crombie when it comes to it. and see just how you can get mad that they don't know TMNT like you do, imnot going to get mad that you don't know enough about the subculture of say goths and that you grouped them with Hot Topic. |
