TMNT Volume 1: Issues 16,22, and 23

I finally read TMNT Book Five after it had been sitting on my shelf for a while.

What the heck did I just read?

That's Mark Martin for you... and I don't mean the race car driver.

I actually thought #16 was a farily legitimate take on the Mirage canon. But 22-23 was just a trip! Really, it got bizarre. But again, 16 was fairly consistent with both the artistic and the storytelling style of the late 80s comics.

Mark Marin is amazing! His stories may be very silly but he's one of my all time favorite artists.

16 was the first Mirage book I ever read..I loved it as a kid. 22 and 23 were a little more weird....But I dunno, there was something about his art style that was pretty cool.

well it's very close the the orig. eastman and laird art for me that's why I like it, if the stories wernt so wacky, I'd say Mark Martin should be doing the comics.

I'm not really a big fan of the mirage vol 1 'wacky' issues, with the massive exception of Mark Martins stuff. Honestly, i I find these issues absolutely amazing!! One of my favourite TMNT images is the x-ray shot on one of the back covers...

I thought the part where they become regular turtles was pretty funny.

Yeah, let me make clear that I do think Mark Martin is a great talent... again I don't mean the race care driver (who is ala great talent at what he does). I just thought his issues were a strange follow up to the Return to New York arc.

His art is great and his storytelling is unique. He has a great knack for humorous bits. Anybody ever read his official parody of the first movie, Green-Grey Sponge Suit Sushi Turtles? I thought that was really funny! Especially since it was Mirage approved!

So I just read #16 having finally gotten a copy.

Really confused by what I just read. Is there any message or theme that shines through to anyone? I really don't know how to make sense of this issue.

I understand it is somewhat non-canon in a way

I never really picked up a taste for Mark Martin. Just not my cup of tea.

Issue 16 as a stand alone story is really good. It's a fun adventure. Issues 22 and 23 are terrible though.
