Superheroes in the comic universe

Something I've been pondering about for a while, and was suddenly reminded of in the cartoon universe forum:

What do people think of the Superhero presence in the Mirage Universe?

Agreed. I rather dislike it. The TMNT are supposed to exist in the "real world," and the real world doesn't have superheroes (or aliens wandering around on streets and in bars).

The real world also doesn't have mutated turtles, mystical monsters, or giant space monkeys who have six arms and can talk. Also might I add it was aliens that created the turtles in the first place. Despite the fact they were in hiding at first it would only make sense that if there were peaceful aliens in the universe at some point they'd make contact. But that's what would happen in the logical "real world".

I'm not too fond of the super heroes myself but in stories that take place in alternate realities like the newest issue of tales it's fine by me. There's also very few issues with super heroes in them so it's not really a big deal the cartoon series is way more guilty of this.

Superheroes is a no-no

I've never liked superheroes.. Exception, some of Marvel's, but superheroes are too.. I dunno.. I just don't like 'em...

Personally, I really love the Marvel Universe, mainly because it sets itself in our world. I can buy into their superheroes because there's an element of reality to it all, in spite of how fantastic it all seems. My biggest problem with a lot of DC's stuff is that it's one step further into complete escapism. I really like Batman because, in spite of Gotham being a fictional place, the characters and power sets are very down to earth (of course, there are always exceptions). I'm not a big Supes fan, mainly because he's TOO good. His only flaw is an alien radiation, and the city he inhabits is entirely fictional. I'm happy to admit that there are great stories out there for the characters I don't like, but

I could see Superheroes working in the TMNT universe, but for me it'd be more in line with what we see in movie adaptations these days - Batman Begins, X-men and the like.

So long as the real world doesn't see any of that stuff, at least to the point where it changes the fabric of society, then it's cool with me. I have no trouble believing that aliens may someday make first contact, but so far they haven't, so it destroys a piece of the reality if you have aliens in public in a present day situation.

It took me a while to warm up to them. I can't say I love them, but I've come to accept them.

I mean, the Turtles can't be the ONLY characters in their universe that crazy **** happens to all the time. I mean, just look at them. Every day they seem to encounter monsters, warlocks, alien invaders, robots and on and on and on. Every. Single. DAY.

If there is THAT much crazy crap going on in their world then some of it MUST be happening to other characters not affiliated with the Turtles. And I guess that's where the superheroes come in.

Yes I pretty much just accept them as part of the Universe just like the aliens and robots and other creatures that show up. I mean we have Vampires even so Superheroes that come in and out of the story line don't bother me so much.

Yea, but alot of marvel's modern stuff is really hard to suspend disbelief on. like joey Q's logic of "Heroes don't look any different than villains to normal people" and "Most people in Marvel earth don't believe aliens exist."

Frankly, the idea these things wouldn't cause severe effects on modern day politics is harder to believe than most of DC's recent odd real world actions (like 4 presidents in 6 years)

Furthermore, the idea that the average citizen wouldn't believe in aliens after countless public invasions is a little....well ridiculous.

Oddly enough, the Mirageiverse(?) seems to be having one of the most realistic adjustment periods.

This is true, but I'm not a hugely politically minded person, so it's not that big a deal to me. Civil War was about as political as I'd want it to be over there, but I think it all comes down to how long you've been with that particular universe. I've been with Marvel since day 1, so I'm fine with JUST ABOUT everything in it.

Nothing I've read in Marvel ever had the public discount the existence of aliens. If you're referring to Secret Invasion, the reaction always read to me more like they were unaware that the Skrulls would actually go this far again.

Still, I think you're right about the Mirage Universe. I can buy into the aliens walking about in broad daylight, because we've had the Utroms since the early days. That said, it would be interesting to see something happen where even the average person accepting of the new status quo would become slightly xenophobic and wary of the alien presence, even if they were friendly/passive creatures.

That was related to joe quesada's comment that the average marvel citizen didn't know alien's existed. He made it when he was trying to defend his "people can't tell the difference between super villains and heroes" comment. I was commenting how rediculous that was.

Oh! Sorry dude, I just reread your previous post and now it all makes sense. Sorry, I'm a little flustered at the mo, got a heinous case of writers block (partly the reason I started these threads - get help from you guys!) and I had to review Secret Invasion on radio yesterday, which was followed by a big Marvel vs DC argument.

I have to admit that the Justice Force/Turtle Titan episodes were not some of my favorites. Whether that had to do with the writing, or the Turtles they focused on, or whatever else, I do not know. I did like "A wing and a prayer" quite a bit- would Raptarr count as a superhero?

I definitely think Raptarr could count because he is a member of the Justice Force now and like a lot of heroes he has a unique ability and an interesting origin tale

I've never liked super heroes in the Turtles universe, other monsters, creatures, and aliens are fine in my book, but superman type characters belong in a different universe.
If Silver Century protects New York, then how come he didn't take down Shredder?
Super heroes undermine the Turtles in their own universe because they're basically invincible, so what's the point of the Turtles fighting Shredder or any threat for that mater.

I'm all for having heroes as long as they don't have "super human powers." Sentry... cmon. wth? Maybe... MAYBE I could get on board if he at least had an origin story, but there is nothing.

IMO
aliens, ok. I can buy that. It's a big universe.
vampires, a bit out there but still believable (kinda). A condition with similar symtoms could possibly exist
even legends like bigfoot or atlantis because that is fun sci-fi

but super powers... gama radiation coupled with genetic tampering, that is something we can at least imagine (Lee's Hulk anyone?). But the Justice force just IS. How? Don't know. Why? Don't know, but they have superpowers and they fight baddies.

Superheroes are fine in the TMNT-verse, but really prefer more mutants.

This is one point where I don't quite follow Peter Laird's vision for the TMNT. When the 2k3 series got started I believe he came out in a statement that promised no more mutants in the show because it made the Turtles more unique. Fair enough, but with superheroes running around every corner, it doesn't make the Turtles stand out that much, IMO.

I kinda see his point of view, though. Still, I wish we could see Murphy and Brown go crazy with updated designs of classic characters such as Ray Fillet, Hothead, Mondo Gecko, et al. Mutants are always cool!

It's cool, glad we worked it out. I understand you misunderstanding me. And I feel for you on the writters block.

first of all i am not a super-hero fan as i used to be in comics. Probably the only super-hero book i buy is some X-men comics ( i cannot see x-men as super-heroes no matter how i try, you know a bit cast aside from society and such )
I am more of an anti-hero fan here.

As for the TMNT universe, i think they are not bad. But they must not be exaggerated. I mean, it is cool to see them in some issues to have a smile on your face. But i do not think that they should be an important part of the Mirage world.
