Movie costume question

I was wondering if anyone could answer this for me.

Are the knee and elbow pads that are worn in all the movies taken from any specific sport? or are they a complete one off, designed only for the turtles?

I imagine if they are from a sport they will be of vintage origin, given the style and being made of leather..... the closest i can find are for volleyball.

hmm not sure about that. i would probably have to say they were custom made for the movie, but i could be wrong.

I can't confirm this as absolute fact, but I'm pretty sure they were made for the movies.

Heck I wanna say the knee pads were in 2 parts, the front part had snaps and they clipped onto the strap that ran along the back of the knee...but I could be wrong, and that could only be the abysmal Coming Out of Their Shells costumes.
