Dan Duncan's new Sketch Book

Quote:
Over the last five years or so I worked really hard to get paid to draw all the time. A couple years ago I finally got there. But I've always wanted to collect all those misfit drawings that never had a home.

Thats more or less what this is. There is also a ton of work from my first two big jobs. So there is a lot of TMNT stuff you've never seen as well as my first crack at boarding on Ultimate Spider-Man. In addition to that is about 40 or 50 pages of short stories in glorious comics form! But more importantly than that I wanted to try and give this book some value to people who are currently were I was just a short time ago. I failed many, MANY times trying to break in, but I learned a few things along the way that really worked for me. The kind of things I didn't really hear from other pro's when I asked for advice. So I put those things (about school, technique, sketching, working for free etc.) right in here.

I put the whole book together and went through LULU. This is probably the coolest thing I've done in awhile and I'm loath to compliment my work at all. My goal is to sell 100 copies so if you pick this up and you like it (or if you're not gonna pick it up but still want to help a guy accomplish a goal)

Spread the word!

Its 180 B/W pages for $20 and you can order it [link]
So what do you guys think? It's supposed to have a lot of TMNT stuff in it, and it seems fairly interesting since he says he added some insight on how he got to break into the medium and stuff like that. I ordered a copy, so as soon as I get it I'll have more info on what's actually in the book to tell you guys.

If it's mostly just his turtle works that saw print already, I will pass on it. If there's some new content though I'll definitely consider it.

Yeah, seen it on deviantart. Please give us an update about the content. I might be interested in it. I'm with Powder on this one.

This arrived in the mail today. There is a lot of TMNT related content - bunch of comic pages, some covers, some sketches, and a few page fight scene between a turtle and a foot soldier that I've never seen before. I know it's a bit of a novelty item, but I'm glad I bought it.

The non-Turtle stuff is good too, but I figure that most of you would only care about the TMNT art.

I can post a few pictures if you guys want, but I wanted make sure that doesn't break any forum rules first.

You got it already? Damn, living on the bottom of the world sucks.

Btw, is this the fight scene that appears in the book?

Spoiler:

I think this piece came from Dan's deviantart gallery. I also believe this is the work that got him the job at IDW, though I should probably double check that.

Anyway, I hope my copy reaches me soon ^^

Well, the second and third can be found on Dan's deviantart and are the ones I linked to. The first one doesn't ring any bells though...

Thank you so much for sharing this! These kind of books never hit my radar since they aren't solicited in Previews. Just purchased!

Well sorry for resurrecting this after so long, but I wanted to give an update on this in case anyone was still interested. After a very long time (and a lost shipment), I finally got my copy of the sketch book. After going through it, I've gotta say that I love pretty much everything that's in it; but let's get into what you guys are interested in. There are quite a few turtle pages in there, but most of them can be easily found on dan's deviantart account. It's all basically inks of some finished comic pages and covers, that mini leo comic he did to get the job at IDW, and some rough sketches. The only thing that I believe we haven't seen before are some action poses (there's gotta be like 6 or 7 of them) that take out one page each. However, I don't believe that justifies the investment if you are just looking for never released turtle art.

Personally, I love the book so far; I haven't had the chance to really delve into it yet (exams... exams everywhere!), but from what I've seen after flipping through it, I can tell you that I'm really happy that I got it. There is a ton of stuff in there, including some notes from dan himself (btw, you can really tell nobody edited the thing; his redacting skills aren't that great), about how he went from amateur to pro. The book is entirely in B&W, and the pages aren't glossy; they rather feel like newspaper pages.

Anyway, hope this helps someone. Sorry for the delay (:
