What if Splinter were to die at the hands of The Shredder?

An actual interesting topic of discussion besides the bickering between optimistic hardcore fans, and pessimistic cynics in regards to the turtles adapated big screen looks.

Honestly I wouldn't just mind seeing Splinter die to further the TURTLES story, I'd LOVE if they incorporated that into the narrative. That is the point after all, the turtles story. Their evolution as a family, a fighting team, turning into reluctant secret heroes protecting the streets of NYC.

In the 1990 film their character growth, and arc was totally stunted when Splinter abruptly bails them out in their conflict with the Shredder during the 3rd act. It made no sense when I was a kid, as an adult I despise that part even more. No lessons were learned.

If Splinter dies on film, it doesn't mean we couldn't get his lessons in flashback scenes in future films. He'd still have precense. The father figure who brought the turtles together as family, trained them in ninjitsu, and implemented their core values.

It would serve as meaningful drama in THIS story. If it was done by the hands of the Shredder it could make him even more frightening. Putting him up there with the likes of villains who got it done killing meaningful characters like The Joker, Green Goblin, etc.

No off screen torture ala the '90 film. Cute little old midget Splinter being killed would be epic. Especially if his actual death at the hands of the villains. It raises the stakes significantly. Too many times these comic book movies rest on their previous laurels and things fall back to the status quo all too regularly.

Shake things up. The only meaningful character deaths I've seen in comic book films thus far has been Rachel Dawes in TDK, and now Gwen in ASM2. Splinter getting offed by Shredder in TMNT would be meaningful, and cool. I'd be totally down for it.

What say you TMNT fans?

Too early to kill him off, at least have the audience have a relationship with Splinter, and make him a character we the viewers want to care about and see what makes Splinter the character he is and what he means to the Turtles. Killing him off in the first movie seems like a rushed idea, and overused.

Second movie, maybe. shredder can return with an vengeance and off Splinter in a glorious battle.

I was actually going to post a topic similar to this : "Pitch a movie outline for TMNT #2".

My idea features a film much darker in tone (a la The Empire Strikes Back opposed to Star Wars). I'm going on the assumption that the turtles end up temporarily defeating Shredder in the first Michael Bay movie :

This film opens up with April giving a report on the strange earthquakes that have been disrupting the city quite frequently. Vernon worriedly makes remarks,"Okay April, can we get out of here now?". Some Foot Soldiers invade the Channel Six news building, and capture April O'Neil within the first 10 minutes. Vernon goes down into the sewers and finds the Turtles and tells them that the Foot Soldiers have captured April and that they're looking for the boys in green. Mikey makes a comment like,"Didn't we just take care of these clowns?" and they head on up to the street to go and take care of the Foot Soldiers.

After some searching, they meetup with the soldiers and kill them. Shredder begins clapping in the distance. After about 10 minutes of fighting, Leonardo beheads Shredder completely, and they celebrate in the sewers whilst eating pizza. Splinter is very weary about the fact that Shredder is dead, and warns the turtles to not believe that they have truly won against the enemy, because there will always be enemies trying to oppress any belief of good and evil. The four brothers get into a fight, and Leonardo ends up leaving to go and get some fresh air.

As Leonardo walks through the streets of New York, a Rhino on two legs comes charging at him with a machine gun. Michelangelo goes off looking for Leonardo and ends up meeting a walking Warthog carrying a handgun. Mikey gets shot in the leg and is physically unable to walk. The Warthog carries Michelangelo away and says,"Can't wait until the boss sees this."

Leo and Mikey wake up in an extremely alien looking white room, where they are interrogated by a man dressed in a nice suit. He tells them that they are going to stay in captivity unless they can tell him where the rest of the Turtles are, as he has a mission that he must carry out. Leonardo says that he will say nothing, which causes the man to get even more upset. He gets up and leaves the interrogation, but as the door opens the two Turtles peer out into the hallway and notice the legs of a robot walking through with the man.

Raphael and Donatello wake up in the morning and realize that neither Mikey nor Leo have returned. They quickly tell Splinter who sends them out to look for the two others.

Back at the Channel Six building, April sends Vernon out by himself to go and get some interviews with some of the workers down by where the mysterious earthquakes have been coming from. Vernon is very reluctant but agrees to go. April heads down to the sewers and speaks with Splinter about how the Turtles are lost and asks if there's anything that she can do to help them. Splinter tells her no, and sends her back to the streets. She exclaims that she hates leaving him all alone, but he assures her that he will be fine.

The earthquakes seem to be getting much larger, and are shaking the building almost constantly now. Donatello and Raphael head towards the sight of the earthquake as well to see if that has anything to do with the disappearance of their brothers. They meetup with Vernon who tells them that he thinks he can hear some jargled radio communication going on down below, but can't make out what they're saying.

Donatello and Raphael head down into the dark pit and discover a gigantic alien vehicle with a huge eye on the top of it. Donatello states that it is the "Technodrome", to which Raphael is not impressed. The two venture aboard the technodrome and notice the race of brain aliens (Krangs) that are aboard the ship. As Donatello hides in a room, he notices a tub full of Mutagen and finds blueprints to making a Rhino mutant. Donnie is then captured and then also placed into captivity next to his brothers. Raphael on the other hand is still loose in the technodrome. The Krang use some sort of alien lie-detector to force Leonardo to tell them where Splinter is, and Raphael jumps in and stabs the Krang robot moments after Leonardo tells him. Raph starts fighting a lot of Krang droids.

Bebop and Rocksteady both slowly walk through the sewers with their guns at the ready. Within a few moments, they have reached the lair. Splinter calls out,"My sons. Is that you? Leonardo?". Bebop and Rocksteady enter the lair and aim their guns at him. "Thank the Shredder for this." Splinter reaches down to grab his cane just as the mutants open fire and each shoot an entire round into Splinter's chest, killing him.

Raph frees the rest of the turtles and they all begin kicking ass on the technodrome, killing as many Krang as possible. The technodrome becomes active however, and begins bulldozing right through the dirt up onto the streets. Vernon is killed instantly, as the technodrome terrorizes New York. The turtles find the control panel but Mikey accidentally sets it up so that a portal will be made within the next Thirty Seconds. That is not nearly enough time for the turtles to evacuate.

April sees the technodrome from the Chanel Six news building, as it is right by the office. The eyeball turns and stares right at her. Bebop and Rocksteady begin running absolutely crazy around New York and are killing police officers and civilians as Krang droids begin appearing in front of the technodrome.

The four turtles surround each other and begin to hug and Leonardo says,"I don't know what's going to happen to us -- But I'm glad to be with you guys again."

END MOVIE. It kind of leaves it on a cliff hanger, I know.. But Empire Strikes Back did the exact same thing.

If they're going to do it, I'd say at least wait for the third movie.

I doubt that they will ever kill off Splinter.

Now, you see? That's the kind of talking that got the movie section banned and locked in the first place.

I'm goning to report you know.

I have been wondering if they will kill Splinter off in this film ever since I saw early videos/pictures of the Turtles being captured which I think happens after the sewer raid and I didn't see Dannywoodburn in a mocap suit being lead out of there with them, so it made me think that they might kill him off.

This photo seems like they are setting up for something and the way the foot are standing around makes me think this is the part or they just beat him and left for Raph to find.

Well they are standing around because this picture looks like it was taken when the cameras weren't rolling. You can clearly see crew members in the shot. They look like they are discussing the shot.

Well, while I'm not crazy about Splinter dying, I think it would be a great shake up of things to kill off April, and have someone else come into play, like Angel or Shadow.

I wouldn't mind it, if done right but I wouldn't do it in this one. It's Master Splinter. He should be in at least the next one. Maybe do a trilogy and kill Splinter at the end of the second film. Set the third up for a dark dark tone where they avenge Splinter's death.

They'll find a convoluted and asinine way to bring him back.
