i've talked to him at pretty good length before and he told me that he did pencils and inks on his issue. if i recall correctly, he did mention that doing the issue was had its challenges and he was having challenges in his personal life as well around that time. i think he was probably very cautious when he was doing 44. i know i would be on a major gig like that. making sure everything is inked and toned slowly and carefully, wanting to submit a high polished final product to kev and pete.
here's a good example of what i'm referring too. notice his inks are really crisp and tight. this was going to be a proposal for a second issue for mirage, then they announced they were no longer taking anymore hires.

When he sent me my commission of Casey & Raph, he wrote me a long letter in which he explained how to take care of the art yada yada yada, and he told me, that after he sent it, he felt like he should have done more heavier inks on the piece. Indeed it was very lightly inked, but it wasn't a deal breaker or anything. I liked it a lot.

* Jim Lawson is finishing up the final 11 pages
* Rick Arthur is working up something for his 3 pages
* Sabacooza is coloring the McCollum/Anderson cover... should be ready today or so
* The toneless pages from Lawson (when he and apparently the world ran out of duoshade paper) are being digitally duotoned as they arrive
* A.C. Farley is doing the back cover... tentatively. We're working out a detail or two still.
* DemonAlukard is still working on his pages that take place in a particular dimension.

Dude... end of an era.
Agreed. Though the exact duoshade effect can (and will) be replicated digitally. What we lose here is the very careful and skilled duotone brushstrokes of Mr. Lawson's hand, though we're trying to be faithful to his duotoning style as much as can be possible.
In the finished product there will also be digital additions and supplements to Lawson's art, too. Energy, background replacements/additions, that sort of thing. There is a very specific effect I want for The End of Time, for example.
Just sent payment. Cannot wait to read this. Its so big for a comic and it looks epic.

Sidenote, there's a quote from Jacob's Ladder that made me think of Odyssey the other day:
"The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you, he said. They're freeing your soul. So, if you're frightened of dying and... and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth."

We're at the last hurdle. Couple of months should be onto the production phase.
Just today I received the final batch of pages from Jim... really cool to see his take on the final pages and all the final goings on. Very moving stuff. This past week I also got all of DemonAlukard's pencilled pages. Also some cool art for the interior flaps of the book from Sabacooza.
Remaining to be done is the inking of DA's pages, lots of more duotoning, the final polished panels from Angie (may need to give some of this to another individual if she takes much longer), and the back cover from Farley. And then it's off to Adam to letter, though I believe he's already gotten a good chunk of it out of the way.

He was very gracious at every level of the project, even designing entirely new characters and environments from virtually scratch. He was grateful for the opportunity to work on new Turtles stuff.
I have to agree, Neo Devil Bane, that Jim is very gracious, very personable, and very professional. I had him do some commission work for me and the experience was perfect. We even share a few common interest, as it turns out.

There was a still from the live action movie; that might be what you're recalling.
The omission of any images from The Next Mutation in "Turtles Forever" was a legal necessity, anyway. Disney/Saban own that series, so 4Kids would have had to pay a licensing fee to use any stills from it.

A real shame that only 60-70 members of this forum will actually read this comic though. Each issue of IDW sells roughly 16,000 copies at the lowest.
It's a shame there's nothing IDW can do to get this on shelves. It's probably simply because they don't want to pay Andrew, Jim Lawson and others for the work and they would have to legally buy the script and own it.
I understand the business side of it all, but it's a real shame only 70 lucky people will read this instead of the 16,000 masses that buy TMNT comics every month.

You can't believe its so close to printing? No offense, because I totally support this project, and think everything from it looks AMAZING but the crowd-funding ended October 2012, almost a year and a half ago. I can't believe its taken so long, not that its so close to printing. I totally get that its 100% independent...but still...it was funded over a year ago. Completely paid for. Shouldn't that motivate the artists, letterers, inkers to actually treat this as a real job, rather than a side-project?

Probably because it IS just a project. It's not being officially put on sale (as they can't), so its not like the stuff you see on Kickstarter or crowdfunded that is then able to legally be sold.

right. while the product isn't able to be legally sold, all the money the writer gets technically is just for production, to avoid lawsuits blahblahblah.
my point is, the writer received all the money he needed to pay for work being done. Pencils, inks, letters, covers, the actual production of the book, shipping...so the people getting paid to do the art and production should treat it like a job, since, you know, money paid for services rendered. The only thing I'd blame the writer for is not being on these guys asses enough. now i don't know the whole story, or the relationships between the writer and his "employees," and this isn't the only project I've crowd funded and had to wait FOREVER for...there's just something about the crowd funding model that needs some serious work.
We paid for goods, and while i know it takes time...a year and a half is a bit too long.

I like that you think Andrew has any control over the original Mirage artists. Considering this project is basically the equivalent of hiring Todd McFarlane to write a Spawn fan comic, I think it's amazing that he got Lawson and co. to even agree to doing it for any amount of money.

i agree that a year and a half is a really long time, but you obviously have little experience dealing with comic artists and commission work. yes they get paid for commissions, but in most cases "official work" takes precedence, so your little side project may start and stop frequently. hell, most comic artists slack on commissions anyways. it's been a year and a half since i commissioned Farley to draw a single full bodied turtle and i have yet to get it. i have another pre-paid commission from another artist that i've been waiting for over 9 months and it still has not been started. so a project this size taking over a year is pretty much a given. and Jim Lawson is one of the fastest/most reliable comic artists i've ever had the pleasure of working with. if it was anyone else on art duties, the completion time would have easily doubled.

Negative. Though he has sent over the script and his pencilled pages (well, 3 out of 5 are pencilled, the rest are more like pencil layouts) with the way he wants the lettering. He intends to ink, scan, and grey tone them shortly. If anyone wants to give him (https://www.facebook.com/rick.arthur.18) a little bump, be my guest.

Man, I can't wait to get this book in my hands, I'm very hyped for it.
I've "funded" four things since this Kickstarting/Crowdfunding "craze" started. I'm getting Osamu Tezuka's The Crater in June, and this will likely follow shortly (unless I'm pleasantly surprised), and I've helped fund Lord British's Shroud of the Avatar, and Cyan's (creators of Myst) Obduction in terms of games.
Gotta say, thus far, it's all been worth it, but I'm really looking forward to reading the book. Since it's got all the continuity between the various series, I think I'll put the book at the end of my TMNT trades, right next to my Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibi.
Of course, after I've read it 1-3 times first. I've certainly liked what I've seen thus far.

We're getting really, really close now to putting the final ribbon on "Odyssey." Received the final 5 pages from Rick Arthur (Mirage TMNT Vol. 1, #44, Turtle Soup) today which actually serves as a prelude to the story. Really cool to see some new Ninja Turtles work from Rick after so many years and it's a big treat to see it within the pages of "Odyssey." And what a great guy. One more last minute, final but very deserved splash page from the always awesome Jim Lawson (who has already contributed 90% of the 109 pages this is going to be locked at) and then it's all going to be resting in the capable hands of Adam Pruett to put to bed in the lettering/production phase. As much or more than anyone else, I can't wait to see the final book.

That title mixed with the architecture is so Will Eisner-esque; I love it.

If the comic is 109 pages will it be stapled or will it be binded? This is almost as big as some of IDW's TMNT collections.

That's a question for Adam at this point. All I know is that it'll be slick and professional.

Andrew this looks amazing. Thank you for pulling this together and getting every one together for this. Can not wait. Every time I see updates on this it sends shivers down my spine. Though I need to touch base with you about my address, I might have moved sense I ordered my copy.

Oh the anticipation is becoming way to much. So excited to see it all together and to have another great comic to read.

Hmm I get the feeling the turtles merge to become the Shogun. Just a hunch based on the pic. I could be wrong lol.
From Andrew's hints, I definitely think that she/he is a character that we knew already. The Shogun definitely has turtle shaped body/head, except the five fingers on the hands, so dunno...

Shipping is definitely near then, it's great to know! :)

Not to poo poo anyone's theories... but there's certainly no Voltron stuff going on here. :)

This thing should be fielded to IDW as a special or something, as large as it is and with all of the contributors.
Well, as long as those of us who pitched in still got a copy and perk (damn, picking just 1page will be tough to do!). :P

I asked that question myself, my only guess is they would have to legally buy the script from Andrew and probably don't want to pay him, Jim Lawson, and everyone else.
Also it opens up a can of worms. If IDW publishes one fan-made comic, what's to stop a million other people from saying they made a Mirage-canon comic and want IDW to publish it too?
But still, this does deserve to have a 15,000+ print run like modern TMNT comics. Shame it'll only get a 150 or so print run at most.

I agree on the can of worms, but one major bonus this project has is the number of official Mirage contributors who took part in it.
I still openly feel Andrew's voice for the Turtles isn't quite authentic, so the writing would get polished as well as other things tightened up and made more commercially viable, but I still feel like it would make a great 30th anniversary collaboration project.

It's kinda funny you say that, because in a way I actually contributed to the story, as did a couple other fans who used to frequent the message boards.

Contributed to a very old fanfiction that's a very loose inspiration for some elements of "Odyssey," but contributed nonetheless.

Would love a nod or two to the Image turtles' injuries as well, for that matter.

Considering Viacom greenlit the TMNT Documentary which started off as a fan project I'm surprised IDW didn't approve of this, especially since Tom and Bobby are aware of it. And since it has authentic Mirage artists like Jim Lawson, Dan Berger etc. doing the art it holds more ground than the Image conclusion did.
I'm sure Andrew would let them purchase the script for free if it meant a 15,000 print distribution. Jim Lawson and Dan already got paid via the Kickstarter and donations anyway.
I also always felt Andrew should have gotten at least one of his TMNT stories officially published, I remember he tried to pitch a script to Tales of the TMNT years ago but it was turned down.

I thought Peter Laird had mentioned somewhere that as part of the sale to Viacom no one but Mirage was allowed to do new TMNT stories in the actual Mirage universe. Then the 30th anniversary book came out and had a couple which surprised me, so I could be mistaken... or perhaps they got special permission from Laird for those specific stories since they were pretty small and not continuity heavy or affecting. Anybody else ever see a statement like that or am I just remembering things?
Anyway, if that's the case, that would certainly affect an official release of this. Mirage could actually do it though as part of their deal, but I don't think Laird is too interested in footing any printing/publishing costs for anything he's not working on himself. Also something like that still wouldn't be a huge print run considering Mirage's current print runs of their last few books.

Nobody but Mirage could make TMNT comics on an official level, but it wasn't universe specific. Viacom owns all turtle stuff outright, so if they wanted to put out a Tales Of The TMNT Vol. 3 even, they could. That's my understanding of it, at least.

Maybe it was an email correspondence I had with someone at Mirage (Dan Berger maybe?) around the time of the sale. I'm almost certain I read it somewhere on the Peter Laird/Mirage end. It stands out to me because I remember IDW putting out a press release when they first got the comic license stating that they were going to do books set in the Mirage universe or with the "original" TMNT or something like that and thinking that they must not have known the full details of the sale to Viacom and then not being surprised when it turned out they were starting an all new TMNT universe instead. My memory may be failing me as my kids slowly drive me crazy so I certainly could be wrong, but this was a point of the sale that had always stood out to me as being a bit unusual.

Nick/Viacom can do whatever they want. If they wanted to (via IDW, or anyone else) continue Mirage TMNT Vol. 4 from exactly where Peter Laird left it (he's remarked on one occasion in his Q&A that he only "hopes they don't"), they could. There is nothing stopping them from revisiting the Mirage universe... they just don't have any particular interest in doing so. And that'd be a dick move, anyway.
Peter's contract is 18 Mirage-based TMNT comics a year. There's nothing in it about "... and no one else can!" The only gray area is if these 18 comics have to be published by Mirage Publishing. Not terribly long ago I posed to him if it was possible for him to put out Mirage-based TMNT comics under his contract through, say, Dark Horse, and even do a crossover with Usagi again (or something)... he wasn't sure but seemed to think that he could. Like Nick/Viacom and the Mirage universe, though, he just has no interest in doing so at this time.

Huh. Well, like I said, could be my memory going on me. The more I look up what Laird has said on the subject, It would appear I'm likely misremembering.
IDW's original press release after acquiring the license DID however say that they planned to continue the stories of the original TMNT as can be seen here:
http://geek-news.mtv.com/2011/04/04/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-returning-to-comics-with-idw/
But I suppose that's vague enough to be interpreted a lot of ways, just stating that they were offering an "all new installment of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and "these new stories from the original series." Anyway, sorry, forgive the intrusion and my getting off topic misremembering the details. My bad. Apologies all around.
