It'll be about 110 pages, and the method of release is undecided. If you'd like to see it on shelves, maybe let IDW know. :)
The team: There's some work from Arseniy/DemonAlukard (who has very generously given a lot of his own money to help keep the momentum of pages coming from Jim... we're pretty much partners in this, at this point) in it, Angie Sternitzke is doing some painting and CGI work for her two pages, Mark Feltham is doing a page (toned by Courtland Brugger/sabacooza), and there's a pretty important page from Tokka in it near the end. And of course the Dan Berger 3 page prologue. Cover (which is not a wraparound) is pencilled by Rick McCollum and inked by Bill Anderson ("Twilight of the Ring," "Juliet's Revenge").

As I've written elsewhere, this isn't intended to be a Volume 4 ending. Unless there's a huge time jump in the final couple of issues of Volume 4, the events in Odyssey take place long, long after Volume 4 and in no way try to "fill in" or replace any kind of conclusion Peter intends to make in that, whenever he intends to make it (or "if").

Perhaps this has a better chance of IDW publishing it since its not based on other writers work like the Image finisher was.
Jim Lawson is such a great guy. Nice to see him agree to be part of this when he didn't have to.
My only gripe is this opens the door for endless "fan made" comics trying to be set into Mirage continuity. While these are high quality productions at this point it feels like anyone can make one of these now with som authenticity.

I seriously doubt Andrew's story is going to lead to a hailstorm of every fan fiction ever written being made into comic books officially published by IDW and/or Mirage. Besides, Andrew doesn't even know yet what he wants to do with this project. He's already produced two unofficial comics, so maybe this time around he'd like to present it as a YouTube video or something. It's really up to him and he'll let us know his decision when the time is right.

That's not entirely what he meant. He meant that people may go the Image conclusion route and have a small run of their fan stories that are set in the MIrage universe printed as comics, not that IDW will pick up anyone's fan fiction.

As a fan fiction writer myself I have to admit the idea of having my stories made into comic books (whether they be published by Mirage, IDW or whoever) intrigues me, though the tales I write are usually a lot more family friendly.

It's weird to say that anything done by former Mirage staffers can be considered "fan fiction," but sometimes life is "stranger than fan fiction." (Sorry, couldn't help myself) But I do wonder, are there any examples of a fan work ever being officially picked up by a publisher? If not, it would certainly set an interesting precedent. I'm definitely curious about the history of this kind scenario since I'm sure this isn't the first, and certainly won't be the last, attempt by a fan to get his work looked at. I know of examples where a fan's work has landed them a job, but that's not the same as the actual fan work itself being published in an official capacity.

A thought occurs. In TMNT Vol. 3 #25, Lucindra appeared. But from what I understand, Rick Arthur apparently never signed away the rights to his TMNT stories, so if this gets officially published, she probably can't appear unless Rick Arthur is tracked down and gives his consent (same with the characters from Rick Veitch's TMNT stories). Savanti Juliet is alright since Bill McCollum and Tom Anderson DID sign away the rights to their TMNT work (at least that what's Bill told me).

Lucindra didn't appear in #25, she's only mentioned. If it saw official publication (and it won't) the solution would be to just remove the mention or en-vague-en the bit of dialogue. Or just to talk to Rick Arthur about it... I've talked to him a bit already.

You wouldn't even have to do that. Nobody needs to obtain permission to simply MENTION characters.
You could have a line of dialogue saying "This guy is like Batman and Spider-Man combined!" -- and as long as those characters aren't visually depicted, you'd be fine.

Rick Arthur maintains all character rights for Lucindra. I spoke to him about it once and he said he fought tooth and nail to keep the rights to her. all else though was work for hire, same as everyone else. Rick Veitch on the other hand does not have the rights to any of his characters from TMNT. thats why he's so pissed with E&L. he didnt beleive he signed over any of his stories, but i guess he did, or did after the fact because they belong to the turtleverse now. with Nick owning the turtleverse all those artists get nothing. where they use to (according to Kevin's TCJ interview) get some sort of royalties anytime books were reprinted under mirage.

Did Rick Arthur ever use the Lucindra character in any non-TMNT comics? Because otherwise she only ever appeared in what...2 issues? One of the Turtle Soup specials and #44 of Mirage were her only appearances.

That's what I was wondering because while its understandable that a lot of these authors want to completely own the characters they create, when it gets in the way of simply reprints it kinda rubs me the wrong way.
Thank goodness Erik Larson already said he's fine with IDW reprinting the Image series as long as Savage Dragon isn't advertised on the covers.
And for that matter, I wonder how cool it would be to see Eastman draw a cover based on the Image Turtles.

I know I'm a bit out of the news loop on some turtles stuff, but didn't Peter keep the rights to make a small amount of comics a year still? or did he just end up selling it off without any kind of stuff like that. I wonder what would upset him so much, that he has the rights to finish his final volume, but just don't want to... I'm not judging the guy, I love him and Kevin for what they BOTH gave us. But it kinda feels like a famous painting, that has 1/4th of it just missing.
I hope he finishes it one day, and gets back on track. I would love for him to exercise his rights, to all those comics a year. I would buy each and every one of them in support of him. Maybe it's just being burnt out, who knows. Like I said I didn't really dig deep into it, or look for interviews or anything.
I'm really looking forward to everything Kevin is doing with IDW, and for his fans. It strikes me as a big shame that there's an issue's worth of volume 4 pages sitting there for a year now, languishing. But I understand the reasons why it's not being shepherded out there for you and I to check out... and I get that they're none of my business.

hey, one question:I noticed there are several things in the trailer that I don't know much about or that I have never come across in my tmnt comics, does one need to research before reading oddysey to understand everything or is this book written so that you get to know everything that is of relevance for this particular story in the adventure itself and any background knowledge of other characters or things in it only adds to the pleasure?(much like usagi yojimbo comics)...
Aska_Badoura
04-12-2012, 03:25 PM
For what it's worth, most of my knowledge of TMNT comics is second-hand, and I didn't have a problem following. Andrew keeps track of everything and has footnotes when events from specific issues are referenced in the dialog, so you can look them up later if you're curious. There's also a few visual things that have more meaning if you know the background, but it doesn't get in the way of the storytelling.

"Odyssey" isn't reliant on any other stories. What stories are referenced, what you need to know about them will be explained.
The Odyssey itself in the story isn't a trip down memory lane... it's mostly to new places, new times and eras never before explored in any TMNT media. Reading "Transdimensional TMNT" wouldn't hurt, I guess. ;)

Go check out the very first post, it give a teaser of what's to come.
It isn't official, but has the possibility of becoming so; it's a love letter to the Mirage Turtles and gives the old, future Turtles one more grand adventure spanning the multiverse.

Transcension: http://thegreenlanterncorps.com/tmnt/transcension.html
Deliverance: http://www.thegreenlanterncorps.com/tmnt/deliverance.html
But there is only shades of those stories in "Odyssey." And the big secrets you think you might unlock from reading those fanfics... you'll probably just end up being wrong as what we're doing here is pretty radically different. But a few things remain.

Not a bad question. I think this might warrant a throwaway line of dialogue or two, but nothing more than that. Would seem wrong to outright ignore it.

It's intended to be a Mirage ending, but not a Volume 4 conclusion. Elderly Mirage TMNT are the main characters and both the Multiverse and time travel (moreso time travel than the Multiverse) are involved. The Archie universe in particular gets a lot of play, and I think fans of the Mutanimals will be pleased.

That's the first time I've ever seen a Lawson Venus. I can't wait to see how this story pulls everything together!
I'd seen him draw at least a couple Venuses for commission/pinup type stuff but in waiting for pages from him I was anxiously curious how he'd approach her in sequential comic book art. He's really killing this, it's amazing.
This is the digital DuoShade you were talking about (and you showed us months ago, I seem to remember), right? It looks good. It's always a pleasure to see more art from Lawson!
It is. The latest batches of pages I'm getting back from Lawson are sans duoshade paper, as he's fresh out. The options were: 1) Forge ahead without duotoning, just raw Jim Lawson pencil & inked art, 2) Use a digital duotoning technique (which Berger recommended and Lawson gave a thumbs up on), or 3) Have one of my guys apply Image finisher-esque tones.
I'm a big fan of consistency and I'm a big fan of duotones and I'm going with #2.

I am awful excited about getting new Lawson turtle art in a comic!
Option 2 for the duotones sounds the best idea personally, for consistency more than anything...

How far along is he now? It's nice getting his covers on the IDW collections, but I really miss his sequential work so I'm really looking forward to this.
Plus Venus!! Never thought I'd see her again! At this rate I don't think I'd be surprised if you somehow managed to include Kirby the 5th Turtle! This book is going to be epic.

It's a real shame Andrew's TMNT comics aren't on comic book shelves. Shame that IDW probably doesn't want to purchase the story due to the obvious fees they would have to pay to both Andrew and Jim Lawson.

That really doesn't have anything to do with it. Those folks have been very cool toward "Odyssey."

That ball is really in Lawson's court now. If it were up to me: "Tomorrow!"
That said, he's turning out pages at a pretty steady rate now, and they're looking great. Should have Ross Campbell's page in a little while, and there may be a couple of other surprise talent additions in the days ahead.

I'm well aware most big companies do not usually take fan-created stuff and make it official, with rare exceptions. Especially of copyrighted material.

Just heard from Bill Anderson. After a year, he finally has it in his hands Rick McCollum's fully pencilled cover. Trying to get him to send me a sneak peek at it before he starts the inking process, which won't take long...

Nostalgia-gasm.
Did he draw Old Raph with both eyes? I just ask because it's hard to tell if that's his left eye visible or a highlight on the patch.
The cover looks great and I can't wait for the inked version. Man, that is some classic McCollum, right down to the stylized border.

You can pre-order. You just have to send Andrew $37.00 through PayPal as a payment owed and make sure he has your mailing address, but I'll let you work out the details with him.

Hmm i would guess its the turnstone from the archie comic run. Love that you guys are doing this with jim, and jims art is amazing as always.
Question though, not sure if this has been answered earlier in the forum and if so i apologize for repeating it but will this include the tmnt from either the new idw comics or the cgi nick show?

Seems like IDW and Nick are celebrating the 30th anniversary next year. Bobby hinted at something for the comics about the anniversary too.
This project would make a great 30th anniversary celebration too.

No hurry... I'm still not done paying for mine :tlol:
I saw Jim Lawson's Facebook a few days ago as he responded to my question if there were anymore "Dragonfly" books of his left to get and he told me yes. But I noticed other peoples postings, asking Jim about "Odyssey" and he said he did up to the pages he was paid for and that its still in the works on how it'll be completed. I'm assuming he meant for his art fee for the remaining pages? To me it didn't sound like Odyssey was gonna be done anytime soon and is certainly not completed. But I could be wrong too. It also sounded like Jim's going though an illness now or recently too.
