View Full Version : Supposedly Someone Who Has Read The Script Had This To Say About It
From IMDB. Make of this what you will:
I too have read the script and it's great, up until the revelation that they aren't mutated from ooze, they came from Dimension X. Along with all of the baddies (including Krang in Suit, Bebop and Rocksteady and an alien version of Shredder). The real kicker, is the race of warrior turtles that follow our Turtles back to NY.
Discuss if you dare.....

Ugh. I wouldn't be shocked if this is true. I doubt it, but I wouldn't be shocked. But, on the off change it is true, why the hell do the turtles have to be aliens? Couldn't they just bring back some other Alien race? Why not some new version of the Neutrinos? Or the Utroms?
If it’s true, it’s worth noting that this is obviously from an earlier draft. We know that they’ve supposedly done work on the script since. Still, it does seem that they’re going “all out” with this one. Its Star Wars meets Ninja Turtles.
It’s interesting that he says “until the revelation” which means that the alien aspect is kept as a secret from the audience and probably the other human characters (Casey and April) for quite a duration of the script. I’m guessing that the film starts with them on Earth, acting as their usual selves, and then we’re told later on what exactly their origins are as a sort of "twist". Just some thoughts.

The only way the turtles could possibly be aliens would be if they were from an alternate reality. And that would require a very open-minded and patient audience.
The film dropped "teenage" and "mutant" and changed to "Ninja Turtles" and has the turtles as aliens. Not only is that non-canonical but it's also a divorce from the TMNT franchise in my opinion.
I guess when they remake ET, ET is going to be human.

Sounds retarded. Alien Shredder has been done already in the 4kids series...we're not going to have TWO alien brains in the same movie.

Meh. I predict 95% of this IS true (probably more like 100%), based on how these movies usually turn out. And y'know what? I still think it just might be good, decent, or even great. Won't know until we see it, but nothing in that sounds like a deal-killer, and it's literally nothing we haven't seen before in other interpretations...
...except the big one. Turtles from Dimension X, huh? I'll live with it. Either they want to keep the origin story nice and short and simple by having all the main characters come from the same place, while playing up the sci-fi angles to sell more toys (VERY likely), OR this is one of those "Everything you thought you knew is wrong" kinda things they do now and then in fiction to freshen up and expand the mythology (ALSO very likely).
It's not blasphemy. "Blasphemy" was that God-awful "April was a drawing" story. If that garbage is canon, then the TMNT can be from Dimension X. Maybe the stuff about the mutagen was a lie, or a half-truth for all we know. This stuff's fake, man, get over it. "Card Subject To Change" and all that.
Like it or not, Nostradamus predicts that the Turtles movie is going to be 95-99% of what's in that description, and it's what I've said they were gonna do since they announced the movie. It can still be really good, and probably will be at least decent. People aren't being fair. If it sucks I will be the FIRST one to say so, but nothing I've heard so far makes me think it will suck, except for the Mirage hardcores who are guaranteed to hate it, and they're a bunch'a Gloomy Gusses anyways.
Crying and boycotting won't help you, it just means they'll never make another Turtles movie. Your loss. Don't go see it, I hate waiting in line for tickets and popcorn anyways. :P

C'mon son. C'mon.
In all seriousness though, I'd give that a shot. Who cares? If the movie is gonna be an alternate thing, let them try something new. Not big on the whole army of alien turtles, but that plot with just the four of them being the last of their kind or whatever would be something I'd humor.
Spitfire
08-23-2012, 02:38 AM
That sounds like the kind of "creative" re-imagining a Hollywood producer would come up with. "Derp aliens are easier to swallow then mutants. The general public can't accept mutants. The X-men films weren't popular or anything!"
Honestly though at this point I really don't give a crap anymore. They want to make money so they'll do whatever they think will make them money. I'm never getting my Mirage accurate movie. I'm never getting full body suits again. I'm never getting a movie without lots of silly crap like pizza eating and burping.
It's a new world. The day will come when someone can pull the turtles out of whatever they are viewed as and do them a way I want to see but that day is long off. By the time it happens I might not even care anymore.
Leo656
08-23-2012, 03:01 AM
Or maybe you'll be the guy to make it. :)
Think about it, even if you or someone else did a so-called "fan-film", put it on YouTube, and millions more people saw it than would in a theatre, and it wasn't big budget but it WAS Mirage accurate, AND a labor of love, and people who LOVED Mirage to pieces thought it was perfect and terrific... would that be a bad thing?
I think it'd be a GREAT thing, honestly. Because Hollywood will never do it, and I want to see someone take their shot, this is America baby! In the modern age, so called "independent" cinema is on fire! Does it need a Hollywood stamp on it, a Hollywood budget, and a theater release to be validated? I say no. Some people say internet fan films are stupid, childish wastes of time. I say *sometimes*, but it's ALSO talented, creative people giving the finger to The System and doing the stuff THEY want to see, and God Bless 'Em.
I mean yeah, it'd cost a bit of money but hey, "labor of love" and all that. For as many people hate on Hollywood's take on TMNT, you'd think someone would have the gumption to make their Mirage TMNT film. God knows there's enough homemade Batmans to fill a zoo.
This is what I think could happen. The film will start with the Turtles and Splinter already on Earth. In fact, the Turtles have probably been here since they were either babies or very young. So, basically, they grew up in New York, developed the accents, developed a taste for pizza, learnt to be ninjas, etc. Pretty much, they grew up immersed in human culture. Basically, when we first meet them, they’re the characters we’ve all come to know, including Splinter. However, later on in the film, we learn their true origins and whatnot. Basically, I think it will be a fairly “faithful” adaptation, but with a different “twist” to their origins. I think this is what the director and Michael Bay have been alluding to. Everything will "look" and “feel” the same, but it will be different.

Having the Turtles go from mutants to aliens sort of reminds of that director's proposed film for Mortal Kombat where he took some of the characters and completely changed them, making them more grounded in "reality". I hate it. Don't fix it if there's no problems.
But considering all the backlash that's come from the Turtles being from an alien race, I wouldn't be surprised if the new script eliminates that detail.

Did you actually watch the short films? They respected the MK mythology while adding neat new wrinkles to it. They're actually pretty damn good and interesting.
I have to say this again about changes to Ninja Turtles. It doesn't have to be 'broken' to be completely stale and tired.

"Turtles from Dimension X" sounds sillier than the Turtleoids from another planet in our home dimension! I can understand why it was such a lame idea, and while I don't mind warrior turtles like the Turtleoids from another dimension, it just is wrong for the Turtles not to originate from a glass bowl or in a body of water or in the wild on land. I sort of like the idea that if revised correctly this could perhaps be the movie version of "Planet of the Turtleoids". Also since Dimension X is coming to Nick, there is a possibility that this movie could still be canon with the Nick cartoon, though that seems unlikely at this point.

I just don't understand why Viacom/Nick would allow them to make such drastic changes to the characters.
They know good and well kids who watch the new cartoon will go see the movie next year, and to see the Turtles being aliens makes no sense.

It looks like everyone was up in arms about the wrong thing. The Turtles being aliens…..yes, it’s true, but to be perfectly honest it’s handled okay. It could have been a lot worse. Trust me, its not actually that bad. Don’t worry; they don’t come down in some huge spaceship. ***spoilers*** Basically, they’ve obviously been here since they were babies. I'm gonna post what I think as I read...
Unnecessary mustache is a hilarious character description.
Did he seriously just say "Eye****s?"
Did they just ask an 18 year old to go have beer with them?
This scene between April and Casey is not only extremely cliche but sounds nothing like either character. Their names might as well be Bob and Linda.
I like the idea of telling the story through Casey, it's one I've used myself, but I'd prefer it be in a clever way. So far you could change out Casey for Justin Bieber and make some lame coming of age movie.
Nice cartoon moment with the manifest change.
The swearing in the writing is hilarious and unnecessary, like that guys mustache.
Turning the Foot into private military types is really retarded. And using Alice lore for code words is super cliche.
The truck vaccuming up dirt is so ridiclious...
Krang? Really? I guess I should have expected that.
This April Casey relationship is awful. I liked it better when they met through the turtles. This bad teen romance crap isn't cutting it. Plus I'm sure they'd cast a super model to play April and let me tell you when a super model asks you to move to New York with her, and she has an apartment already, you do it.
If I'm a fan I already hate this so that disclaimer doesn't help. "They look like what you remember but in a way we think is better!" Yeah like Dante's "awesome" redesign in the new DMC game...
So Raph and Leo get paragraphs to describe them and their looks and Don gets a half assed sentence?
So we're building up Mikey to be the one we're all waiting to see?
Leo and Raph take out all the guards while Don does nothing. And why the hell did Raph hand the stick to Leo? Minus the end he just broke off it's bascially a bo staff.
Like the Panda comment was ass enough, the serving Kung fu for dinner line is even worse.
I still really hate the Foot being military guys with guns...
Well Mikey said it for me, seriously. Using their shells as bullet sheilds is ****ing retarded.
Also how are they all hiding behind one turtle? That makes no sense considering the size Leo and Raph are described as being.
Nice OT moment with the elevator...
Actually we have seen it before in TMNT 2, even had bowling pin sounds. And to be honest I never wanted to see it again.
Watching the turtles fight dudes with guns who could easily kill them is a really bad idea. The bullet proof line barely makes this excusable. I want to see them fighting other skilled fighters not disposable soliders.
That forklift into the SUV thing was severly retarded. I'm starting to worry for this writer. His brain isn't right.
Enough with the stupid shell gags already!
Tree branch sai? Ugh...
Gun holster nunchucks? SERIOUSLY?! This is actually so bad it's starting to piss me off.
Farm tool weapons? This is Ninja Turtles not Macguyver!
Well at least they're not aliens in this script.
Way to glaze over the origin story. I mean that...keep it quick and simple.
Here's a chance to give them the iconic red masks and they go with Black? This writer needs to be smacked with a make shift baseball bat!
Introduction of the colored masks is as LAME as always.
Well it's clearly the Leo and Raph show yet again. Sorry Mikey you're the turtle people want to see but aparently not hear. Actually that's Don who again gets screwed in the dialgue and combat department.
Use the shell crap one more time, one more mother ****ing time, I dare you, I double dare you!
Brain sick like this horrid writer!
Oh they hear a loud crash but none of the screaming?
Oh Get Together is playing during a fight between two brothers, how eye rollingly clever...
45 pages in and I want to strangle the person who wrote this. Thankfully I'm going to guess the producers who read it know it's awful and won't be using most of it. It reads like it was written by someone who read a paragraph summary of the entire franchise and know **** all else.

It has to be. No fan would write a script that lacked any turtles identity of it's own. They took the blockbuster formula and slapped the turtles into it. Military guys, lots of shouting, horrid jokes, and bad re-imaginings of established characters. You know saying it's like Transformers isn't far off. Casey and April might as well be Buff and Fox.
Interesting to note that the script is dated from the 30th January. Work definitely would have been done on this since, since this is from way before it was put on hold. Also, it was obviously written before a director would have come on board.
I haven’t read it fully, just skimmed bits. Can someone who has read it point in the direction of Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady’s first appearance, like the page numbers. I want to read how they’re described. I can't find their introductions anywhere.

If I had to choose one thing about this script that rubs me up the wrong way, its what they’ve done to Shredder and the Foot. That is dreadful, whichever way you cut it. I find it quite odd how "Schrader" isn’t described physically at all. Everyone else is. Strange.
The Turtles, IMO, have actually got off quite lightly. How they’re handled isn’t actually as bad as was feared. IMO, at least. But Shredder…………I was looking forward to seeing him. On the plus side, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady sound like they could be good.

08-23-2012, 07:40 PM
This script wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, though it obviously needs a lot of editing in order for this to be good. As they say, the enemies of a franchise are the fans, where if they insult the project too much, then there is no reason for such a product to exist. I actually like the idea of having Casey and April being introduced as normal young adults, though I would make them a little older (Casey at 23 and April at 21 since they mention their college experience and that we already have April interning at a high profile news corporation!) We do get introduced to Casey's mother Evelyn, and being that she's in her 50s, Casey should be somewhere in his 20s. But if April can be at Channel 6 at 18, perhaps in the Nick Toon during Season 3 she will do so there. We also reveal that April's father is named Harry, which sort of makes sense since April's middle name from the original cartoon was Harriet. Though in New York, the CBS affiliate is on Channel 2, not 6. (The Blackrock building is mentioned which is indeed CBS's news headquarters).
I feel that the name "Schrader" was chosen since it sounds fairly similar to Shredder, and its weird having a TMNT script featuring Krang, Rocksteady, Bebop, the Technodrome, and the Foot, but no Shredder. Perhaps Schrader becomes Shredder in a sequel. This script makes even Seasons 4 and 5 of the OT feel serious and real, and who knows if the "so bad it's good" tactic could have worked. Even though it isn't too violent, this looks to be a PG-13 movie based on profanity. Overall, I feel it's not completely garbage, but lots of revisions are needed in order for this project to work, and I feel that people have overreacted on the negativity of this movie. It's a shame that many people don't have the courage to help rather than insult them and sadly don't believe that there can be positive things.

I'm totally open for OT rehashing, and taking wild new directions for things. Just so long as more familiar things co-exist (like the IDW book & Nick show).

okay, i just finished reading most of the script. i gotta say, this movie is going to be HORRIBLE (if they go with this script). Why are bebop and rocksteady going to be in this, the just seem out of place. they could have used the new mutants from the new nick show. also, why is there no shredder in this movie?!?! I am very confused about the script, is it a sequel to the original movies? is is tied in to the new nick show? everything in the script seems weird, the turtles being aliens is stupid and destroys everything we know and love about the TMNT's origin. i really hope this script is not the final one, i think it would be better if there was no movie at all.
So my final question is, is this movie going to be related to...
The original Movie series
The New Nick Series
Or will it be something completely different?

t's a shame that many people don't have the courage to help rather than insult them and sadly don't believe that there can be positive things.
I'd write a script in a heartbeat but they'd ignore it. Also I wouldn't be getting paid, which assuming this is real the moron who wrote this did. I'd also get no credit and have no hand in making sure it was actually done the way I wrote it.
The only saving grace is that the studio obviously didn't buy it so we'll see where it goes from here.
As for Eastman, well these days Eastman seems to like everything. He's the polar opposite of Laird who hates everything. That's why they probably worked so well together. They balanced.

I would have liked for Casey and April to be older. It almost sounds like a teen movie at the beginning.
Colonel Shraeder tho....LOL....
So Casey Jones is the one giving the turtles colors and not Splinter.
To be honest, there are some parts where it could work but obviously, the final script will be different from this early draft. I'm not going to judge until we hear more about the actual film.

Know something? I don't hate it. It's actually sort of interesting in that it's different but with familiar tones and characters.
Call me crazy but I'm sorta sick and tired of Ninja Turtles being exactly the same almost every time. Atleast the Transformers were animals once.
And nothing will ever be worse than the 'April is a drawing' garbage.

For the most part, the story wasn't bad. The action seemed like it would be really good. Leo, Raph and Don seemed really in character. Mikey on the other hand was just kinda there.
This "script"(I don't believe it's legit) could damn well be a very good fandic that would allow the use of made up characters. Like it wasn't actually made for the turtles. Like DBE......which means I would see it once and never ever again.

But some changes aren't made to make a good new story. It's to refresh things and shake it up. I liked the script sort of as an Elseworlds type of story and that's a-ok because Ninja Turtles as it exists currently is S-T-A-L-E.
Also TMNT fans complain about ANY change so it's hard to judge what kind of change is the wrong one. This is the place that was demanding a written explanation for months over a third toe.

Looks pretty awful overall. All the stuff I said "could work" doesn't look to be presented in any way that WILL work. This has Transformers 2 written all over it. I know it made money, but it did everything wrong that the first one did right.
Ah well. At least now we know MOST of what we'll be getting, since there's no way they have the time/money to start COMPLETELY over on a new script. They'll use like 3/4 of this and fill in the rest with fluff. At least we know what we're getting.

The problem people are overlooking is no matter how bad the reviews are, this is still a major movie that will be seen by millions of casuals.
It isn't something we can sweep under the rug like the Next Mutation and Venus' character. Or something like April being a drawing in the comics that few people even know about. This is a major movie. Look at the way terrible movies like Batman & Robin are still remembered and made fun of nearly 20 years later.
The TMNT fandom will seriously never be able to live this down. It'll make the 3rd and 4th TMNT movies look like masterpieces in comparison.

Nitpick time.
Schrader needs scrapped, asap. Make him a new character (Or just replace him with Krang from the start) and save the real Shredder for the sequel. Perhaps I missed something but there needs to be a story behind how Splinter learned Ninjustsu. They could easily save that for a sequel, and have Hamato Yoshi, Oroku Saki, the real Foot Clan and all that good stuff.
I actually really like the idea of April being a small town girl who's not from NY, but I hate that for Casey, he's a life long New Yorker. His character was so Sam Witwicky.
The color headband scene would be way cooler if they were all red, Casey tries to give them new one's and Raph basically says "F*** you, I'm keeping mine". Don't know how they missed that one.
I don't like them being 17. Total nitpick, I know, but each new universe should start the turtles at 13-15.
That orb stuff was retarded, and the name "Dimension X" is just so corny. I understand the use of Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady and the Technodrome, but you can draw the line there.

This post is full of spoilers, if that's a warning you have to give when talking about a maybe-not-real probably-early script for a movie that is in development hell.
Just read that whole thing. There are quite a few really, really stupid parts. But I dunno, maybe half or so of this makes for a kinda-ok movie, I guess? Even the dimension X stuff is potentially interesting if executed well. If they go with this I'd guess it'll be shittier than 2007 but potentially better than the third movie. Nerdy nitpicking time:
But boy were there a lot of really terrible scenes in there sprinkled around. And yeah that Shredder is pretty lame, and of course it has a no-one-will-ever-care military hero inserted. The use of their shells in combat situations is a decent idea, but holy crap do they ever over-use it. I was thinking pinball in my head already, and then the script used "pinballs" as a verb. Krang had so few lines that he may as well have never talked, or spoken only in an alien language. At least they got to kill him, anyway.
Casey seems like he's supposed to be the main character, but he's pretty much shoved into his situation so he can be a plot device. He lives far away now because they want to have them traveling on the road, but it only takes them like two scenes to get to NY anyway. He has to be young because April is young (so she can be an intern), yet his mom is on his case to move out and grow up already as if he's pushing 30. And somehow his hockey is for kids too even though the rest of his team is apparently in their 40s.
How can they even build the Technodrome if they don't have power? And how does it somehow consume power drastically faster than it takes it in? Why the hell does Don tether a laptop when he could have just used the ipad to do his search? Apparently their internet has "santioned URLs" and "underground blogposts" results. Three ipads and an iphone in the movie (and a terrible angry birds thing). Why would turtle people from dimension X name their kids after people from Earth? Perhaps they could have worked in some line about the Renaissance being the last time the worlds connected or something. Why the hell would the turtle guy call them "rockstar"? Movie nearly ends on a "smoking hot turtle chick".
And Bebop should really be the one with the gold deagles, c'mon now.

My biggest problem with Shredder is how he's finished off, or captured. The main villain becomes Krang, taking away from the awesome Turtles v. Shredder bout that might have been somewhat of a redeeming quality.
It's mostly all rubbish. Do they think us older fans are just going to eat this sh*t up just because they throw in a few curse words? "Those older fans will be so pleased, a vulgar TMNT just like they always wanted!"

This is what happens when you get people unfamiliar with the franchise involved. Look at Freddy vs Jason. It was directed by someone who knew nothing about either franchise and it was a horrible movie. Sadly, it was what New Line wanted.
James Cameron was working on a script for Alien 5 that involved Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was what everyone wanted. The moment he found out that Alien vs Predator was being made, he trashed up the script and got majorly pissed. He said it ruined the validity of the franchise.
JJ Abrams rebooted Star Trek which I actually thought was good despite being a Trekkie. It made Star Trek popular again but it pissed off alot of people.

Where are Fred Wolf and Lionsgate in all this? If the film has Krang, the Technodrome and Rocksteady and Beebop isn't that considered making a derivative work of the OT? Wouldn't they have to pay royalties?
Freddy vs Jason was supposed to be a classic. It would have been nice if it were scary for even a second. It wasn't the same hockey mask that scared the crap out of me as a kid. I guess Paramount owns that property. Wes Craven could have at least directed it. But New Line wanted someone who wasn't familiar with the franchise. And the guy that played as Jason wasn't Kane Hodder. It was some guy from Canada. Canadian outsourcing has become more common in Hollywood. Nothing against Canada. It's just the typical US outsourcing to make a quick buck. These are Kane Hodder's remarks about FvJ from imdb.com.
Kane Hodder : Quotes
[when asked his thoughts on Jason's look in "Freddy vs. Jason", in which he did not play Jason] I guess they wanted Jason to look like a skinny little bi*** this time.

Freddy and Jason will never be truly scary again. They're pretty much mascots on cereal boxes. The movie was supposed to be a silly little popcorn movie where nothing mattered because the draw is seeing Freddy and Jason slash the sh*t out of eachother.

No I'm not taking off points because Craven wasn't directing. It would have just been nice if someone familiar with the franchise directed it. And Craven Directed 29 films.
I saw those movie trailers when I was a little kid. I had plenty of reason to be scared. Jason's hockey mask terrified me for years even after I saw his face. Even after I saw Nightmare on Elm street as a kid, it wasn't Freddy I was afraid of. It was Jason. I still have nightmares about it occasionally. It has to do with not being able to see Jason's eyes.

Just started reading it. On page 11, and so far, it is already clear that this is a screenplay written for people who don't care by people who don't care. However, this is all moot as if this screenplay is legit, it will probably change a dozen times by the time the film enters production (and probably several more times after that).
But, as a screenplay, it lacks perspective, personality, and decent staging, though it has its moments at times. The dialogue is really bad at times (on par with early draft writing) and seems to enunciate a-typical plot points, just in case you are too dumb to see it for yourself.
I hate how the script just stops, just as it's supposed to pick up the suspense, to have a melodramatic, romance moment with April, that would have probably fit better had it been used in the previous conversation had it not been cut short by stereotypical babes. Plus, April just showing up at the Warehouse is very awkward, and awfully convenient, even if the film were produced by Wicked Pictures.
Freddy vs. Jason was nothing but fan-service. It wasn’t a horror film, nor was it trying to be. Anyone ever seen The Dream Warriors? The main plot point in FVJ came to be in A Nightmare on Elm Street part 3. I would say that's a pretty big nod to the fans. Freddy vs. Jason is pure fan-wank, and that’s why it’s great.
About the script. As others have pointed out, this script is from January 2012. Likely, it was written before the director came on board. This script will change (and probably already has) a hell of a lot of times before the cameras start rolling.
I'll never forget reading a leaked script from the first Transformers film that was from February 2006. As we all know, the actual film came out in July 2007. The script I read was quite different to the finished film. Yes, the main plot and characters were pretty much the same, but there were quite a few notable differences between the two.

I think it was going to be reworked anyway. Screenplays usually go through many changes before it gets to what you see in the final film. And for big budget tentpole flicks, they tend to go through many screenwriters and script doctors, most of which go uncredited. Dialogue will removed/smoothed out, possibly by an uncredited scriptwriter, hired specifically to spiff up the dialogue some more. And, things will most likely be made up on the spot and during storyboarding and "pre-viz."
It's ideal for most of the kinks to be ironed out before the film hits production, hopefully this is what Paramount is drying to do. I know the domestic failure of Universal's Battleship scared the studio into taking a second look at GI Joe 2. So hopefully, studios are starting to realize that you can't just rip-off Transformers and expect people to show up. Even I thought Battleship would make decent money and I didn't even want to see it.
Screenwriting in Hollywood is a bit of a joke nowadays, anyway. It's not that writers don't try, it's that independent writers (even some who write fan screenplays) try harder to make their scripts coherent and final, whereas, in Hollywood, on high profile projects, it'll probably change. They say never to blame the writer more than the director, and that is true. If this movie is a stinker, it's probably because the director doesn't know how to take a generic screenplay and make it into something better than just a "made on an assembly line" product.

There you go. Let me give you some highlights.
-The turtles are indeed aliens from Dimension X, part of a race of "Turtle Warriors" left on Earth and raised by their adopted father Splinter (who is also an alien) to one day fulfill a prophecy and defeat Krang
-April is an 18 year old intern at CBS, and everything in the script suggests that Megan Fox could have played this in her sleep
-Casey is the main character
-The Foot are a secret government army, not ninjas
-Shredder is now 'Colonel Schrader', a humanoid alien from Dimension X who can grow sharp blades all over his body
-The movie ends with the four turtles living at different corners of the globe, each guarding a magic orb that keeps Dimension X and Earth from merging together
-Theres tons of swearing, with the script twice using the term "eye****ing"

Is Shredder even played by a Japanese man in this? I know he's an alien but he still has a human actor.
As far as I know, there's been no casting decisions made for this movie. If there were, they haven't been made public yet. In this incarnation, the Shredder isn't Japanese. You could say he was more along the lines of the Shredder from the 2003 animated series. Except that he's not a Utrom. Here, he's an alien disguised as a Colonel in the army. I do think they need to change/tweak this aspect. This whole facade is to get to Substation 16. However, it serves little purpose later on when his "superior," General Davies, a fairly pointless character in the scheme of things, shows up later. I almost feel like they could modernize Shredder without going the Col. Schrader route.
Yeah, it sucks when they do something terrible with something you like, but it isn't worth making a deal about. If you peel away the nostalgia of the original animated series, it really wasn't that great either, and Turtles 3 was a travesty. And Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation...The point is, this wouldn't even be the first terrible Ninja Turtles adaption, and yet, it isn't terrible, nor has it even been made yet. Nor is it anywhere near being made yet.
From what I understand, Paramount hasn't received a script they are satisfied with, and they want to drop the budget down a bit. And, if the film doesn't enter production anytime soon, I'd imagine Jonathan Liebesman might end up moving on to something else. (Though, I probably wouldn't mind that) Also, there was a major uproar about the Turtles being aliens. I'm sure the powers that be are contemplating whether or not to keep those elements in the script. Personally, I didn't mind the alien part in the script, but I hated the prophecy elements. They were a bit contrived, and abrupt. I never care for forced prophecies and destinies in films. In the real world, things happen because that's the way they happen. They are the result of circumstances and consequences of a long line of actions and decision made by you and, sometimes, even those around you. There is no prophetical aligning destinies and all that hogwash. So, that scene where the Turtles get their weapons for the first time is a bit nonsensical and overplayed in the screenplay...
...but, it's not without repair! There are even entertaining bits in the screenplay. It could use more personality and needs to be rounded out more. I also think that maybe they could make it a bit more serious, making Shredder, Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady competent and terrifying. I also think they need to take April and Casey's relationship problems down a few notches. And, some of the jokes need to go. For example, there is a dumb joke at the end of the screenplay with a sexy turtle chick.

I agree hugely with the "assembly line" It is all formula first then sometimes if we are lucky they go in and add and subtract. I can just hope down the line this might catch the eye of someone who really cares to give it the extra oomf
I am grateful turtles are getting a chance, I think the only thing about the studio and Bay I can get behind is the budget potential but in a perfect world I'd have much different picks. We all know soley money itself doesn't equal great film

Peter Laird has read the script.
Someone else alerted me to the existence of this script, and I just a few minutes ago finished reading it. If it is, in fact, the actual draft that was rejected and caused the production of the next TMNT movie to be pushed back to 2014 because the script was unsatisfactory, then I think all true TMNT fans should be grateful to the new "powers that be" that they did not allow this wretched thing to go any further. It could definitely be taken as a good sign if that is the case.
It reminds me of one of the reasons I am glad to not own the property anymore... because I don't have to tear what little hair I have left out while trying to fix junk like this. -- PL

Actually, they are still teenagers. They are 17 years old. But, I wouldn't mind a film where the Turtles are older, more competent and wiser, perhaps having battled the Shredder, maybe even dealing with the deal of Splinter. Blasphemy? Perhaps, but it would be a bit different. Maybe it could be a vague sequel to the first film. Or not, either way, that won't be happening.
Basically, look at the screenplay as if the writers never knew about the comic books or the movies, only the original animated series. And look at it like the GI Joe and Transformer movies; how they translated those properties into film. Eh, currently, I'd say it is as flawed as those films were. I did like the first Transformers film, but I wouldn't say this screenplay (if official, and obviously changed by now anyway) is even on that film's level. I think it be better, but I think they might have to drop a few elements, and add a bit depth and atmosphere to make something that is definitive.

What is Michael Bay thinking? He should just stick to Transformers. At least those were actually good films in my opinion. WHY? Because they actually stayed true to the Transformers for the most part. Because they stayed robots that turned into cars and fight each other.
This, on the other hand, is nothing like the original? Has Bay gone mad.

Then why the hell did Kevin Eastman say this was going to be the best TMNT movie ever made?
Is he insane? To be fair he probability saw a much newer version of the script.

They knew that the turtles all wore masks of the same color at one point, Splinter called them "my sons", which he didn't do in the OT, the turtles see themselves as brothers, Raph is a hothead, Casey is a major character, and even GI Joe and Transformers still stayed true to the basics, the Joes and Cobra were still human they weren't aliens, and the Transformers were still robots from space, they weren't built by humans.

Can someone explain to me what they had to gain from turning an iconic and popular villain like Shredder into something that's barely recognizable? Seriously, it just doesn't make sense.
How could they not think something like this would cause backlash from fans, and confusion from little kids who will be watching the Nick show? There would be no reason kids can't also enjoy this.

I was just messing with CyberCubed because his overreactions are hilarious to me. I agree with you :p
I bet you anything Schrader is one of the things they're working on. It can't be left the way it is. It is the single worst thing about the script. All this time, people have been worrying about the wrong thing. We were concerned about the Turtles and the alien aspect. TBH, the alien aspect is actually handled better on paper than when it was first presented by Michael Bay all those months ago. It’s the bloody Foot and Shredder that needs work done, as well as the fact that Casey and April have mysteriously swapped places. And, if they must keep it in, which they probably will, the clichéd “Chosen Ones” angle needs work done to it, too.

Will this new movie have anything to do with the Nick Cartoon?
No. Each is its own thing. I don't know why you would want them to be connected, anyway.
Just like the first Transformers film, a lot of diehard fans who were adamant about boycotting it caved in and saw it anyway. I think it will be the same here. What will they lose, anyway? Some sense of misplaced pride or principle? A bit silly for something so trivial. Money from going the cinema? Maybe, if that were truly a big deal. But seeing as they can afford to log onto the Internet with their computer or laptop or whatever contraption and declare their intentions not to watch it, I'm pretty sure they can afford to go to the cinema, too. Doesn’t matter, either way, TBH. No one's missing out. If the fan doesn't care about not watching it, I doubt very much the studio would care, either.

The problem is if the movie is poorly received an does poor sales, it'll damage interest in the TMNT brand for the next few years at least. Nobody will want to make a sequel and casuals will be turned off.
The IDW comics have been solid and the Nick cartoon looks surprisingly fun, so to see two good things come out of the Viacom buyout but one horrible thing isn't too bad.
Other than the fact that more people see movies than read comics or watch cartoons.

Personally I think it would be worse business if the TV show failed in the ratings, than if the movie tanked. The TV show is where you can brainwash kids into buying the toys and keeping the interest up on a weekly basis. Oh, and it's not like they'll keep developing the multi-million dollar movie if the show bombs. That's what will make or break the third TMNT wave, I think.
I highly doubt that the show would fail, but it is the mine field to get through.

The show is airing on Nickelodeon which is the most watched kids channel in the U.S. Giving it star treatment it's almost guaranteed to be successful.
The 4kids series lasted 7 years airing on an obscure Saturday morning block that nobody watched and with poor toy sales. If that series lasted 7 years I am sure a heavily promoted show by Nick will be much bigger.
The movie failing makes an impact with the adult crowd.

Like I said - I don't think it'll fail.
While I'm sure they wouldn't mind drawing lots and lots of adults to the movies (something I think the leaked script proves), the adults aren't necessary for the franchise; the kids are.
Let's take a look at that other Nick franchise that made a movie - The Last Airbender. That movie didn't turn a profit until four months after its release, and that's really not desirable for a movie that cost 150 million dollars to make. And the profit isn't big or anything. While it's technically not a failure... Yeah, they see it as a failure.
Still, they made a sequel to the popular show, and that sequel's going strong and everyone's happy, despite the movie more or less failing.
If the TMNT movie fails it will turn off casuals, yes, but it won't damage the brand. It won't help it either, obviously, but it won't damage it. Worst case scenario when it comes to interest in the brand is a status quo, and that's not too bad.

Reading the script and...yeah, there's teething problems, trying to play up to too many audiences though, but there's some good ideas in there, like The Foot being a military unit, and Raph being the wise-cracker he was in the FW 'toon rather than the boring angsty cynic he is in the comics and 4Kids show is always a welcome treat.
Bebop and Rocksteady have a great dynamic too.

aw, thanks!! that means a lot. :D
i'll admit, though, i gotta come clean, but when i first skimmed the script i was like "well, the new origin is stupid and generic but some of the action seems cool and the characterization is passable, but it's not TERRIBLE in and of itself if you can just let go of your TMNT expectations..." but then out of some morbid masochistic fascination i kept going back to the script file and reading more and more throughout the day in more detail. each time i'd find something stupider and more awful until i reached my "total garbage" conclusion, haha. the characterization is crap (Raph's Kung Fu Panda line, ugh), Casey giving the Turtles' their colored masks is stupid, the masks don't make much sense as it is so any attempt to explain them makes them make LESS sense, the whole Splinter lying to them for no reason about their backstory, the magical orbs, Colonel Schrader, the snowmobile scene (?!), the Turtles deflecting bullets off their shells including a part where they use an unconscious Michelangelo as a shield, the Turtle Warrior, the Turtles' turtle parents being killed by Krang, the baby turtle trainees at the end... it's so stupid. it's crap as a regular movie, it brings nothing new to the table, and it's even more crap as a TMNT movie.
and this is coming from a guy who doesn't like drawing conclusions until the finished product because execution and tone are everything, even the stupidest ideas can be done well and surprise you. and everything pretty much sounds dumb at first, especially for properties like TMNT where we all have our own visions for the characters and concepts we hold onto. so maybe the movie will be amazing, maybe when it comes out we'll all be going "wow, the Turtles should have been aliens all along! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles without mutants, ninjas or turtles is great!" but at the end of the day the script still blows and a crappy, bland, paint-by-numbers script is no way to start a big movie production.
all that said, though, i can't really muster much energy to care, the movie was barely even on my radar before this script leak. they could never make more TMNT stuff at all and i'd be content with the wealth of great stuff we already have. plus the new Nickelodeon show looks stellar so far and the IDW book is going great, who cares about the movie? and yeah i realize the irony of me saying that while posting in the TMNT movie thread. ;)

After going back and slowly reading the entire script, I can't say *all* the ideas are terrible but none are presented well, the dialog is atrocious on all levels, and it's way too close to the "Transformers" stencil. "Paint-By-Numbers" indeed (although doing a literal rehash of Mirage #1 or the first movie would be just as bad from the opposite direction). The ending beats you over the head far too hard with the sequel, and the entire second half rests on a plot twist at least half of TMNT fans would hate and reject on its face, and the sequel pomises to be even more of that (plus "Venus"). The tone was all over the place, with characters from the OT mixed with adult situations and dialog/language. It just seems like a flawed design that could not have been pleasing or fully satisfying to ANYone. Let's hope it gets a lot of work.
If anything, it reads like a sort-of decent "Elseworlds", the old DC "What If?" line. The reason for "Elseworlds" was essentially that none of it would ever be acceptable as canon regardless of how interesting or well-done the ideas were, and that's how this script reads. An interesting issue or three of "Tales" by a fill-in guy, but never as canon and not as the basis for a new series of films.

Aw, com'on Zarius! Even you recently admitted that the comic has gotten a lot better since it began in 2001! And remember, way back then we fans had very few incarnations of the TMNT for our imaginations to play with. :-)
I said the pictures were pretty. I still think the story is a little off-the-cuff and is your typical "angsty reinvention" of a cutesy kid's cartoon. I gave up on it the instant Shredder mutilated Krang.

Yeah, I almost felt the whole script was just a "Find/Replace" for a rejected Transformers script:
Int. Elevator - Night
OPTIMUS PRIME, USING BUMBLEBEE'S BODY TO DEFLECT INCOMING BULLETS!!!
As the bullets PING off his body, Bumblebee GROANS awake. He realizes he's being used as a shield:
BUMBLEBEE
(to Prime)
Seriously?
But Bumblebee isn't the only one surprised by this--

Bullet resistant is more like it.

Wait so the script we read is the one that is being re done and is why the movie was pushed back. Right?

We don’t really know why it was pushed back, but I have a sneaky suspicion it was more to do with the budget than anything else. Paramount, the studio, has been pushing back so many films lately. Anyway, I suspect it was to get the budget down and to rework the script to accommodate that. After all, if you want to get the budget down, you’ll need to make changes to the script. The first draft reads like it would make a very expensive film. Apparently the budget was at a whopping 150 million dollars, and according to the article that broke the news, Paramount wants to take between ten and twenty million off of that. Either way, we're looking at a very high budget film.

My advice to any serious TMNT fan is not to take the movie seriously. It's not TMNT anyway because the turtles aren't mutants. Second of all, if enough fans don't take it seriously, it will never be recognized as being part of the TMNT universe. Plus since it has the Technodrome in it, people are going to find these forums and possibly learn more about the franchise.

Its not a movie yet. Jesus H Christ.
Why are we acting like this script is EXACTLY what the movie is going to be?
And yo, guess what? If it has a TMNT label on it and has 4 turtles named Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo it's part of the pantheon whether you like it or not. Sorry.
Funny because of how ridiculous?
Right! Because in a movie featuring 4 humanoid turtles in bandanas fighting criminals using ninjistu they learned from a rat, I demand realism!

I actually thought the part where Leo used Mikey's shell as a shield to be hilarious. Laughed out loud at it.

That shell nonsense, especially the aforementioned scene, honestly reminds me of a badly written segment of the Next Mutation.

HA! That argument is a such an overly used cop-out, a badly attempted response driven at nothing but the need to piss people off. Get off it, man. It's called respect for the source material and the fans who propelled it into stardom to begin with. You do not take something so special to others and enervate it to the point of bastardization.

There is a difference between realism and believability. Usually, as long something seems to follow the law of thermodynamics and looks convincing enough, it can be perceived as believable in terms of film logic. Realism, on the other hand, doesn't exist in film. Sorry, most things are typically over-dramaticized, including movies based on true stories or even mundane stories involving mundane people, liberties are always taken. For example, I always laugh when someone runs into a fire and is able to make it out alive, even though they never dropped down to the floor and managed to somehow see through all the smoke. On the Backdraft DVD, I seem to recall them talking about realism, and yet, at the end of the movie, the characters are standing on the roof of a burning building, that is supposed to be taken on defensively, meaning that you fight it from the outside.

I about brought this up in the other thread, but what elements do you guys think might go in order to drop the budget. CGI is a big thing, it's expensive. So, obviously, a lot of it will have to do with that. Clearly, their going to want the action scenes. I'm not sure that they are going to give up on the Dimension X thing, but that would be an easy way to drop the budget down. Another way is to drop Bebop and Rocksteady. At least, in this script, they don't do much. Or perhaps, they could drop Shredder/Schrader as an alien. I'm not convinced that these are the changes that will be made, I'm just brainstorming.

I don’t think we’ll be losing Dimension X or Bebop and Rocksteady anytime soon, as the inclusion of these things (as well as Krang) seem pretty integral to the overall plot, particularly Dimension X and Krang. Also, like Bebop and Rocksteady, they seem like the necessary “gimmicks” to achieve blockbuster status, which is certainly what Paramount wants more than anything. I don't think the story itself will change, so the alien aspect will almost certainly be kept. I think people have to get used to that.
The kinds of things I can see changing is Shredder. I actually think the whole General Schrader thing might either be omitted completely or seriously altered. I also think, story-wise, the focus will be flipped from Casey to April. I also think they might get rid of the whole “Turtles leaving New York to train with the Warrior Turtles in Dimension X” aspect.
On the other hand, although it is, admittedly, doubtful to happen, I really wouldn’t be surprised if they toss away the alien revelation completely and leave it as something that they will confirm in a later sequel. Although I do admit that that probably won’t happen.
Other than those, I really don't know. The word is that Paramount wanted to shave about ten to twenty million off the budget, which for something like this, isn't really that much. What changes can you see, being as realistic as possible?

Who are you again? Hi, I'm Stryker. Best in the world. How you doing.
Maybe it's just me but I've never looked for believability in Ninja Turtles because the core premise is completely silly. You can try and act like it isn't silly now but it is. Once I have bought the concept of 4 humanoid ninja turtles I can go along with a bunch of other things, deflecting bullets with shells? Why the hell not. They're fighting an alien pig next. It's when it tries to be serious that it falls apart for me. Serious melodrama involving Casey and Shadow's mother one minute and vampires the next.
Again, I'm not going to get mad and hyperbolic over a first draft script that may or may not be real. Until any of this is confirmed we might as well attack fanfiction writers for having Splinter and Michelangelo do the deed with eachother.

Batman & Robin didn't make the good Batman stuff stupider, Batman's doing just fine.
The dangerous thing is if its intensely profitable garbage. If that's the case, then we could see corporate mandate forcing changes from the movie onto the IDW series and the Nickelodeon cartoon. Bumblebee being mute has become cannon across all current Transformers cartoons and video games, for example.

Yeah but Batman and Robin was so hated that it took the studio almost 10 years and several reboot attempts to salvage the franchise. They pretty much had to wait for the public to forget how awful the last movie was. Not saying that will happen here but I care if this new film is like this and makes money. It sends the message they can put no thought or effort into something and make a profit.

They planned a lot of things and none of them happened because the time wasn't right. They only started writing that because they liked the dailies of Batman and Robin. When the film got panned they trashed the idea. Then they planned a Batman Beyond film, TKR, a movie called DarKnight about Manbat and Scarecrow, Joel tried proposing a Year One film and so did several others, let's not forget Batman Vs Superman, and even Darren Aronofsky mused up an awful take on Batman that involved him living in a junkyard.
It effectively killed the franchise. And the fact the studio execs thought it looked awesome further proves how out of touch they are.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it has nothing to do with victory. The studio just wants an early screenplay for one of their films in development taken down. Studios issue Cease and Desist orders all the time. It’s no different here. I wouldn't read anything into it. Paramount just wants it taken down, nothing more, nothing less. Of course, its 100% confirmation that it’s the real deal. It’s also near confirmation that this is the screenplay they’re going to use (albeit, probably a later version, God willing).

The backlash has been terrible though. If most fans hate the script and what they did to the characters, why would any casual movie go-ers see it?
Based on that story I'd say this movie will get poor reviews on rottentomatoes. Someone at Viacom better slap the movie scriptwriters to knock some sense in them.
Even people who work on the Nick cartoon laughed at the idea of the turtles being aliens.

I'm sorry, but you're really not looking at this the proper way. You are only looking at it through the eyes of a fan. That's not going to work, and its certainly not going to give you any indicator whatsoever of how the film is going to be received. The world doesn’t work like that. Particularly the world of big-budget movie making. I think its fair to say that the vast majority of fans don't seem to like the script in its current form, but in all honesty, Paramount couldn't give two s##ts. Just like they couldn't give two s##ts when the script for the first Transformers film leaked and a lot (although not as much in this instance) of fans didn’t like it. These films, complete with their huge budgets, and despite what people like Kevin Eastman and Michael Bay say, are not made with the fans in mind. It’s the truth, I’m afraid. The studio only cares about the Average Joe, because there is more money to be made from the Average Joe, mainly because there's more of them than there are fans. Do you know what? As much as you may not like to hear it, the script reads like your typical junk-food-filled summer blockbuster. In short: it reads like something that has the potential to be a big hit. Fans only think it will flop because they don’t like the liberties it takes, but the bigger picture is being missed because of those goggles I mentioned earlier that you’ve still yet to take off for just one second. The Average Joe, in all honesty, doesn't care about the liberties, as they are no way near as invested in TMNT lore. They'll just see something that they'll recognise because of brand recognition that hasn't been seen in a long time. "Cool, Ninja Turtles. I remember them". That's it.
Luckily, it does look like work is being done on the script and the best you can hope for is for the finished article to be a bit more fan-friendly. Still, the fact that Paramount asked for this to get taken down means that it’s at least the story they’re working from.
I’m a TMNT fan, but sometimes you have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Even if you may not like it.

Based on that story I'd say this movie will get poor reviews on rottentomatoes.
Like studios give a sh*t about Rotten Tomatoes ratings. A studio's main concern is profitability. If they cared about Rotten Tomatoes scores, there would've only been one Transformers movie. If they cared about reviews, Platinum Dunes wouldn't be here to make this movie.
If a movie's good, hey, there's a little bonus, but that's not what matters to most of them.
