Have you ever even read the mirage comics?
Not much variation between the Turtles...

No, never.
Not much variation between the Turtles...
And I once challenged this forum to show me any examples of panels from the comics where it is allegedly confusing which Turtle is which. 30 years of comics and folks were only about to produce one, maybe two panels from anything.
So....

The only issues I can think of off the top of my head where this might be an issue are the "Dale Evans McGuillicutty" story arc.
But aside from that...I'm with Andrew on this one.
It's never been all that difficult to tell which turtle was which in a black and white comic.

I must be weird, because I kind of like the designs. They're a tad bit too overly busy, but they're no where near as hideous as the NT designs where.
Leo looks the best so far, Raph and don kind of disappoint me the most. Don looks more silly than anything else, but I like how don and let's face turned out more than the other two.
For one thing I think this movie will have great CGI, as many have stated here. But I'm still holding my breath about where the story will end up going. The designs aren't great, but they're no where near as horrible as I had them in my head (a weird mix of bay transformers and NT).

The next mutation over these anyway of the week. How are you gonna say these designs are better? They literally have clothes under their shells. That's physically impossible.

Not a huge fan of their approach to Megatron, but overall, I thought it was an interesting, different aesthetic, and one of the only things the movies brought to the table that I appreciated on some level. Which is how I feel about these Turtles (except those glaaaaaasses).

Also, these bear far stronger resemblances to real turtles than most interpretations we've seen, so I don't know what you're on about?

At least here, we can tell the Turtles apart...
You do know that film is not only a visual medium, but an audial medium as well, correct?
The Turtles' personalities are so different, as are their voices and speech types, that it would be nigh IMPOSSIBLE to confuse them in a film.
Even without the use of Bay's ******** stereotypes.
Not to mention the fact that a lot of the time these days, people general create the Turtles with different looks, such as varying heights, varying shades of green, different skin patterns, and so on.
Only if the audience was blind and deaf or the filmmakers screwed up the personalities of the Turtles so terribly would you not be able to tell who's who in a movie about them.

Considering the maquette shots were being passed around back in August (as new photos, to my knowledge), and this "Ninja Turtles" logo is well over a year old, dating back to the scrapped script, AND has since been changed back to TMNT, I'd say this poster is maaad old. I'm hoping there's a better chance we'll see turtles closer in appearance to the scale models, rather than these guys.

Pretty confident you are correct and that they will be the maquette's especially since the poster shows blue and green eyes for all the turtles and I read somewhere that Raphael actually has brown eyes in the movie. We will find out soon I hope :tcool:

If the Turtles are jumping around and fighting a bunch of black ops guys in ninja costumes, how would you even see the glasses?
I was able to tell who was who during fight scenes in the 2007 movie.
Because the Turtles were talking, and had different weapons.
These changes are completely unnecessary and ONLY serve to shove the Turtles' personalities in our faces, not as a means of "identification."

I can't believe I just saw someone - with absolutely no irony - accuse Jester of being disagreeable, and someone else, also irony-free, ask Andrew if he's ever read Mirage. Madness.
Poster: Ugh. The lips and nostrils are the least of it. To me, those are barely noticeable. The way the Turtles are composed, they look fat. I'm sure it's not the official movie promo poster, but still... c'mon guys. The layout and composition is strictly amateur hour.
The more I see of the designs, the more I don't like them. Leo and Don are awwwwful, all that extra armor/gear, Donnie looks wretched. "Get It? He's a NERD!" Oh, we got it... just like we "get" Leo's the "traditional Asian-style warrior" and Raph's the Bruiser and Mikey's the pop-culture fanboy/hipster... because even if we didn't already know their personalities, those designs kind of stuff it down your throat. So very not a fan. But whatever.
As for anything else... guys... please, before you surmise things or give people/things more credit/blame than is warranted... study... how movies... are made. Seriously. So much debate about whether the director or producer deserves blame for this or that, or all these "logical" explanations for the Turtles designs and their hideous outfits. It's really not that complicated. You don't have to Guess at things when you KNOW why they are.
1. Movies like this, the producer holds more pull and makes all the big decisions. Producers hire directors; directors are employees, hired specifically to make the movie the producer and the studio want to make. They make no decisions and have little-to-no authority of their own. TMNT is no more Liebsman's movie than Superman III was Richard Lester's. Lester made the movie that the Salkinds told him to make. Liebsman is simply Bay's hired gun.
2. Do not - do not - even pretend for one second that these designs were given any deeper thought than, "That will look cool for the action figures." Nobody actually making the movie gave it that kind of over-thinking. Movies based primarily on a toy license, the studio entirely determines the look of the characters based on shelf appeal. They want the toys to look completely different from the Nick show toys, and that's it. Absolutely nothing else. There is no "Well, logically, they need shades because of adapting to sunlight..." or, "Donnie tapes his glasses because his head is so wide..." No, Donnie has those glasses because "He's A Nerd!" Same reason he has Ghostbusters goggles and a proton pack. They do toy concepts first and work backwards from there. Seriously, do some research; it's how movies are made, it's not just my feeling/opinion. These are Simple Facts.
And I hate being pandered to by toy companies. Thus, I hate these stupid, cluttered, unnecessary designs. I get that some people are really optimistic about the movie, and that's great, and it makes sense they'd look for anything and everything to put a positive spin on. But people trying to justify the look with "Well, it makes sense because..." are really, seriously over-thinking it. They even LOOK like toy design concept art. Just a cluttered mess.
Like it or don't, opinions are free. But judge things as they are, not what we would like them to be, is all I ask. In this case, judge the look based on the fact it's simply what some middle-aged executive thinks is "Hip" and "In-Yo'-Face!" Don't over-sell it with "Well, realistically or logically..." because that's got nothing to do with why they did it. Zero.

Depends. It could be like The Lone Ranger, with everyone agreeing six months in advance it looked bad and then avoiding the movie like the Plague once it came out.
Like it or not, sometimes these things become a self-fulfilling prediction. If enough people decide early on, "That looks crummy, I bet it tanks", it will tank no matter what. Some people like Lone Ranger. Some people like Green Lantern (me, and I'm sure at least someone else, somewhere). In both cases, the whole world decided early on they didn't care, and we see where that "publicity" got them in the end. :ohwell:

It has nothing to do with the poster itself. It's that everything we've seen so far from every angle gives anyone enough clues to decide if things are going to be up their alley or not. And some of it looks awful.
"Deductive Reasoning" is a thing. I highly doubt that the Turtles are going to look drastically different from the poster or the sculptures, this late in the game. That's the look we're getting. That poster is a crammed, poorly-designed mess, but that's not the problem at all. It doesn't matter what context it exists in. It displays a product that looks like it's not going to be very good. The Turtles themselves are over-designed and gimmicky.
Whether we were meant to see it or not, it shows us 99% what the final designs are going to look like, and now we can decide if it's eye-pleasing or not. I, personally, say Not.

I do like that Leo and Don have some armor, that makes complete sense... but they over did it. Why would a turtle wear bamboo armor over his ****ing shell? And Donnie looks more "grandma" than "nerd" to me. Yuck.
Mike looks ok, the tattoo is what was too much for me. Hopefully he's not really wearing pants. That just doesn't make any sense, even if they are spandex. Hopefully none of the guys are wearing much of this extra ish throughout the bulk of the movie.
And Raph just looks evil.

What's funny to me is, when people said they hated that Bay and Fox were involved, a lot of others said "We have nothing else to go on, let's wait." Then, we got some set pics, and some people didn't love them, and others said "This still tells us nothing, let's wait." So then we got some questionable cast/story news, and people said "we still haven't seen the Turtles, let's wait." So then, we get a look at the Turtles and Shredder, and when some people don't like them, a few others say, "We still need to see a poster..." Then we get a poster, and people are like, "Well, it's not the *official* poster," or, "Well, we need to see them in motion..."

But at the same time, I bet if it does suck, certain folks are gonna be like, "Well, maybe we still need to wait for the Director's Cut before we make a decision." The blind faith and desperate want/need to like the movie is puzzling, to me.
As if we can't already tell enough by NOW, as individuals, to form a preliminary opinion. A few months ago, I would have agreed. But we've seen enough in just the last week to say, Yes, some people are entirely justified in thinking they won't like it.

It's quite clear they are more concerned with the toys. So, like the old cartoon, the movie will be a massive toy advert for parents to buy for their kids after the movie ends.

I feel the same. I'm both dreading the film and looking forward to it. If I like it, I'll be surprised. If I dont, well then... oh well. I gave Dragonball Evolution a chance in theaters, knowing it be bad but not knowing just HOW bad. Last Airbender looked good from the trailers but was really... gross in it's full length.
That's where trailers make or break the movie. Or, really, any marketing.
Some posters dipect a movie's tone and "story" better than the movie does. Sometimes trailers show the best, most exciting stuff from the film and the actual movie falls on itself.
I love, and own, several movies that a general audience hates. I dont care. I loved them for what they are. It's even more fun when the clerk questions my purchases. Speed Racer and RIPD, both on BluRay, for example. Why am I wasting my money, I would be asked. And to buy them in HD?
Because, although not perfect movies, there are parts I enjoy enough to watch the movies again.
The Dark Knight Rises and Man Of Steel; two more movies I often see mentioned, even here on the 'Drome. Generally it seems these movies are disliked and tarnish a franchise. I think both are great films.
Only part of the poster I'm liking is Leonardo. Not sure if someone pointed it out, but it looks like Donnie is gonna be using a metal bo-staff.
I was pointing out a few things. The Staff was something I noted but didn't see anyone mention. Maybe it's something he created?
I think I'm still the only one to point out the kanji on Don's bandana tails.

My personal default is to neck-punch anyone who questions Speed Racer. How so many people entirely missed the point on that one hurts me deeply. It's the most accurate cartoon-to-film adaptation ever made, essentially being a live-action cartoon all by itself. And it was so much Stupid Fun from beginning to end, that even what I wanted to hate - Mach 6 over the Mach 5 in all but one scene - I couldn't. I went out the very next day and got the Mach 5 tattoo. Other than Inspector Detector's accent, I wouldn't change a damn thing. They made exactly what a Speed Racer movie should be. Change even one thing, make it even a little more serious or ground it even one tiny bit in "reality", you unravel the entire thing. "Speed Racer" has a decades-long tradition of being the silliest, dumbest, most over-the-top batsh*t crazy thing you'd ever see, and I for one embrace that the movie was absolutely nothing more, or less, than the cartoon come to life. It was perfect. Specifically because, they didn't try to turn it into something it wasn't.
If some nitwit clerk ever questioned my DVD purchases, I'd leave. Especially if they try in the same breath to get me to pre-order some other POS. Game store clerks do that sooo much. I hate when I have to tell them I already own Big Game X and am specifically looking for something more niche and obscure. These people are ostensibly there to take a person's money in exchange for goods and services, not give commentary on personal taste.

As if we can't already tell enough by NOW, as individuals, to form a preliminary opinion. A few months ago, I would have agreed. But we've seen enough in just the last week to say, Yes, some people are entirely justified in thinking they won't like it.
That said, I wanted to hate Man of Steel and I just couldn't. So ya never know.
Maybe some people would just rather see a movie before trashing it. Perhaps some of us aren't willing to call a movie garbage based on things like nostrils, glasses and tattoos.
That's just how I see it.

No it will definitely be the nostrils that ruin this movie. LOL.

I still think nostrils and lips are the least of it. Maybe because I was prepared for them, but they don't jump out at me the way Donnie's overall horrid design does. There's way more wrong than the faces. They look a little "off", as do the bodies - particularly Raphael's "Hulked-Out" look - but it's the rest of it, the completely unnecessary "Image Comics 1993 X-Treme 2 Tha Max" outfit designs that kill it for me.
Variant figures in the toy line, sure, go for it. They'd be okay for that. But even then, they almost look more like stuff Playmates rejected.

Yea, Raphael's full head bandana is what bothers me the most. And then the extra gear they are wearing is the second offense.
I'm thinking it's more like a do-rag...
You've expressed your view and metephorical heigharchy that everyone on here must have the same view, and the only ones that matter have the same view as you. Your narcissistic views and false sense of superiority can only be surpassed by powders sophomoric jests about the mentally handicapped people.
I think his point was that... those guys (you included) really don't bring anything "new" to a discussion on the subject.
Broken records.
You on the Nick show, I can pretty much assume any post you make is meant to bash whatever is being discussed. Thus: Not adding anything more than repeating yourself.
BTW: Run spell check over those words. metaphorical, hierarchy.
Exactly. The movie bombed and got horrible reviews and I just wonder... what were they expecting? And then I had people tell me that I should see it while on acid or 'shrooms or whatever. Nope, sorry. No point and that's just stupid.
I totally agree with your reflection on Speed Racer. I bought it on DVD and got my hands on the 2-disc store exclusive on DVD too. Once I upgraded to BluRay I kept the 2-disc and traded out the original DVD... which I kinda wish I didn't 'cus in the end, it only amounted for $1-2 in trade-in credit at Zia :-/ Oh well.
I thought Inspector Detector's accent was awesome and interesting. I had no problems with him. I felt Sprittle and Chim-Chim should have been "cut down" in a few areas, and the "turd" lines... but overall, nothing to break the movie for me.
John Goodman was perfect and Susan Sarandon needed more screen time but played her part well enough.
My fav sequence by far are the Casa Cristo race in the Mach 5.
I also own the soundtrack score and the single by "Ali Dee"... 'cus those were stupid fun too. :D
I buy it anyway. **** the haters lol I buy it proudly and support my interests, not the "know it all clerk". Sometimes the clerk is supportive but I know there are a number of buys where they question the choice.
Maybe some people would just rather see a movie before trashing it. Perhaps some of us aren't willing to call a movie garbage based on things like nostrils, glasses and tattoos.
That's just how I see it.
That's a totally different approach than the last 16 pages of this topic (not counting the others) have shown.

Enough that I have read different people responding back saying "my kid cried at the design".
I think some of the designs would be cool, but strip the rest of it back. Donnie with goggles? Cool. I can live with that. But the rest of the stuff? Tapped glasses? No thanks (again, I'll point out that neither Mike or Raph have broken glasses thus debunking an earlier theory that Don fit his glasses for his mutant turtle head shape.)
This is very early 90s "Extreme"... and most of that stuff didn't live out to the latter half of the decade.
EDIT:

They are familiar while adding a few new touches. Mikey's look is funny, keepy the shoes from the current look and wearing a "My name is" sticker.
But, again, I will watch this movie and I will reserve judgement until the credits roll. If I enjoy it: awesome. I'll watch it again and support it.
If it's garbage, at least there are successful cartoons and 3 previous movies I enjoy (I'll give you a hint, it's not TMNT 3 included in that).
I really liked Bad Boys 2, if it can be anywhere in that "tone" or pace or sense of action... it be nice.

It's funny how this Donatello could devise any type of abstract scientific gadget, but yet can't even fix his own glasses (which is why I'm assuming it's taped), make a pair that fits, or at least make contacts (considering he's going to be ninja fighting).

I don't know where else to put this but it really isn't worth a new thread… I just noticed that the tag line for this movie has changed on IMDB
It now says "Cowabunga comes back"
that is in place of the old description which was 'aliens invade earth and inadvertently spawn a quartet of mutant turtles who rise up against them to defend the planet' ...or something to that effect.

The science and reason for Donnie making adjustments to his gear is fine. I can get behind that. He's the smartypants of the bunch.
But to say he fashioned them to fit his turtle shaped head... while the other turtles are all wearing normal, non-reformed glasses makes Don's reason void. His head isn't any more different than his brothers. Therefore the tapped glasses only serve to give him the "nerd/geek" stereotype.

As nervous as I am about the Turtles and as much as I'm dreading seeing Bay's Shredder, I'm most nervous about Splinter.
Because THIS guy is playing him:
http://i.imgur.com/6wtljZp.jpg?1
Yeah the guy who hung out with Kramer on Seinfeld is playing either Japanese man/ninja master turned anthropomorphic rat Hamato Yoshi OR pet Japanese rat of Japanese ninja master Hamato Yoshi(I myself prefer the latter. The mutated pet rat of murdered Hamato Yoshi).
So...balls.
Splinter is gonna be waddling his way around everywhere. I don't know many dwarf actors but I see the only reason he was cast was because of his stature. Given he's probably the most name of them besides Vern troyer I just feel they could have found someone else of that stature, preferably someone Japanese.

As for telling them apart, I never had that much trouble normally I just read what someone says and often times end up being right. Looks like til be called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after all. And we get official pics soon!
"The Hasbro promo art was on display in at the Nurnburg Toy Fair in Germany. It's a similar display to the one that will be at the Int. Toy Fair in NYC next week. Full reveal of the toy line (digital images) will be next week, probably on Thursday.
The movie is being called Ninja Turtles in most of Europe and Asia. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the US, UK and other English markets.
I saw the Splinter figure. He's freaking scary. Looks like a sewer rat. IRL should be significantly smaller than the Turtles. He's got the Fu Manchu facial hair but it's more subdued that the animated movie."

Going with the Rat origin, it isn't implausible that Splinter speaks like an American, or as a New Yorker. different sure, but if he developed the ability to speak and learned to speak in America, why would he have a Japanese accent?

Oh my god no. No. Jesus no.
I don't want Splinter to sound "American." Let alone to sound like a New Yorker.
He's the only thing that ties the Turtles back to Ninjutsu. Whether he's Hamato Yoshi turned humanoid rat or the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi turned humanoid rat.
Given how small he's apparently going to be it's probably going to be Yoshi's pet rat and not Yoshi himself.

There's nothing stereotypical about it if they get a Japanese actor to play the Japanese characters.

There's no doubt there where better choices and I personally really liked Mako's voice for Splinter and the Nick Splinter is excellent. But all in all, splinter not having a Asian flavor to his accent isn't the biggest crime of this movie.

I'm new here, and I haven't been able to go through all 17 pages of this thread but I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of negativity from what seems to be a large percentage of forumers (fans) on here about this movie.
I think it's really exciting that they are making a new live action movie, I also think these designs look great, to me they look like a TMNT would look if they were real. I mean, the 1990 film TMNT's were great, but they can't just go with that exact look again.
I only have 2 fears for this movie.
1. The Turtles themselves aren't the main focus of the movie. I know I read a rumour ages ago that the film would centre around Casey and April (similar to how Transformers was done). That would be a crying shame if it didn't centre around the TMNT, like they pulled off in the 1990 film.
2. This fear has been placated a bit now, but I HATE 100% CGI characters, they just never, ever look real. And CGI sets. But since I saw the pic of the actors in the suits that I guess they will overlay CGI onto, at least movement etc will be realistic.
I base my hatred on CGI on the cr*p that is Star Wars: Attack of the Clones...
Anyway slightly off topic...I'm really optimistic about this new film, and I'm a big fan of the designs shown here. Radical!

Not a fair assessment of CG! - using a film from 2002 as the benchmark.

I'm sorry to say but the 1990 film suits do not look like the Fred Wolf series; they were based on Eastman and Laird's art in the Mirage comics. They're the best looking suits to date.

Yes you're all experienced Technodrome forumers. I am not.
However I'm an experienced TMNT fan who still follows what's going on, to an extent.
My original point that probably got lost was that I was genuinely surprised at how much people are hating on these designs. When I look at the poster, for example, I can't help but see anything other then something that resembles almost to the dot the TMNT as we know them. How the designs can be hated so much is beyond me. But then we're all entitled to an opinion.

I showed the "figure" designs to my student's the other day and they were quite perplexed but intrigued at the same time. They seemed anxious to see the film after seeing the designs.
They are elementary school kids and dealt with it fine. Weren't people saying an eight year old child cried at the sight of these designs? That seem's incredibly ridiculous and is definitely an issue with the child more so than the designs.

Yep. They don't look "scary" at all. Maybe in that poster Raphael looks a bit on the brutal side, but definitely not frightening.

Hell Raphael aint even half as accesorized or as hulking in the first movie, and the scream when he realizes Splinter is captured is damn near one of the most chilling scenes I've ever seen in the Turtle medium

How the designs can be hated so much is beyond me. Most of the reason, for me anyway is that they look too human. Raph's face looks bad with Mikey easily being the worst. I'm sure the reason behind their choice for facial features comes from them wanting to capture the look of the actors which really isn't necessary if it results in a look that's less than desirable. if all you saw were their faces without bandanas, you'd swear they were from a new Shrek movie. It's not the most horrible thing I've seen but they could have put way more effort into making them look like turtles.

It's a shame that there are a few that think unless you've been registered on the forum for years or made 1000's of posts, you're opinion doesn't count, or you've "been out of the loop".
Anyway...don't mean to step on anyone's toes or upset anyone so maybe I'll keep my head down on here for a bit...
No need to keep your head down bro this is a forum after all and its purpose is for fans to express their opinions. We don't all need to agree on everything we're here to talk about what we like and dislike with other fans. That being said I'm not too big a fan of the designs. Yes they resemble the turtles as we know them but wrapped in a lot of unnessesary. Its like spidermans costume in the first amazing spiderman change for the sake of change. At best its someones attempt to flex their artistic muscle and at worse its shameless corporate pandering. I can only hope that some of this gear actully serves some purpose beyond just having the characters wear their identitys on their sleeves so to speak.

While I might be "new" to the forum, I am totally not new to TMNT. right? that's the type of things that can get old quick when it come to some fan boards. We're all TMNT fans, Mirage, Nick, IGN, and even this upcoming movie. They're is really no difference between us.
As for the design while I'm not totally crazy about it looks pretty decent and got me a little hopeful on how it will look in motion in a trailer or full screen.

I want to address this because I would be one of the many people under this umbrella, but I am not a casual fan.
The making of this movie is the reason why I ended up registering for membership on this forum. I had checked in here occasionally for a long time before that. I've been a fan virtually since the day I was born because my older brother started watching the cartoon from the first episode (I was born in 87). I own all seasons of the OT on DVD, the four movies (5 including turtles forever) and have a large collection of various TMNT memorabilia.
I realize that this isn't all about everyone qualifying themselves as 'fan enough' to weigh in on the news of this movie as it comes out, but there are probably many people like myself who registered here because news is really starting to surface. TMNT is a massive brand, and certainly there are many people who haven't looked at a piece of TMNT anything since their childhood and are now expressing their interest in this movie. But there are also very likely a great deal of fans like myself who never lost interest, but didn't feel the need to come and discuss it on a message forum every day. I've probably watched each of the live action movies 2-3 times a year (maybe once once a year for the 3rd movie..) for as long as I can remember. I would think that the people who feel interested enough to come register and post on a TMNT message forum can at least match my level of interest.
There are a great deal of you 'senior' members here who are worse than religious people when it comes to TMNT. It is sad. (Powder, you are excluded from this in my opinion)

Amen. The way I figure it, this movie is totally aimed at the parents of the new Nick generation and the older sibs of said generation. It's a great marketing tactic to sucker the whole family into loving the TMNT, either for the first time around or as a "second wind."
That being said, the hubster was heartbroken that wasn't going to be Nick-style or a follow up to the 2007 movie.

Well obviously there needs to be a balance. If the movie's completely dark or entirely goofy then that's just making the whole film very one-note which is definitely NOT good.

Man of Steel had subtle comedic moments that didn't clash with the more dramatic elements of the movie at large.
It worked quite well.
Will Arnette and Whoopi Goldberg in a TMNT movie produced by Michael Bay will not be as subtle or as far between.

To be honest that whole scene felt misplaced to me. On its own I love it and the whole "I'm here to help but on my terms" is the Superman I want to see more of in MoS2/BvS, but coming straight after Zod's death it's just got the wrong tone. One second Superman is on his knees, distraught at the price of victory, the next he's joking that "it was" a billion dollar satellite. It felt wrong. I know the grave yard scene with Martha led into the Daily Planet ending but it would have fit better after Zod's death, then have the drone scene then the Planet ending (slightly reworking the lead in). To be honest it feels like when they rewrote the battle of Metropolis to end with Zod's death, they didn't bother to rewrite the rest of the ending to reflect it properly.

The last ironman movie was hard to follow and all and all poorly done. I don't get how anyone liked that too, and I find it difficult to take a villain seriously named after an orange. And the avengers was fine but the way it was built up, it was the biggest let down in movie history. That movie had SO much potential and it completely failed to meet any expectation. And right when the fight scene happens and the movie starts to get good; IT'S OVER! I thought it was just the middle of the movie. Terrible long and drawn out. But it was an ok movie, just huge let down. The marvel movies are usually always good just DC isn't putting the best product out lately. Including the green lantern.

That movie got so much right, while feeling so wrong. I feel like there was a big disconnect between the writing of the story, and its depiction on screen. Pretty much all the complaints people have about the movie are things like, "This doesn't look right," or "That doesn't feel right." Basically, a bunch of situations when one may think, "I doubt Nolan and Goyer saw it this way in their heads."
Then you have Snyder, multiple times, defending the movie by saying what he intended to get across. And that's the director's whole job - to show you what you're supposed to perceive. And if lots of people don't get what you wanted them to, that must be a failure on the director's part.
Those movies were just terrible.

I love most of the Marvel Movies(I haven't seen Iron Man 3, and Thor: The Dark World), the chris nolan trilogy, all of the Spider-Man movies(including the amazing spider-man and I thought Spider-Man 3 was decent with a lot of flaws) and a lot of most modern superhero movies. Man of Steel was decent but it had a lot of disappointing moments. I was glad it was controversial as it was but if it was better it could have shake a lot of people's view as "the big blue boyscout" type image while still being a good movie and a better set up for a DC Cinematic universe. I hope the sequel is better though.

Need to find out what the marvel people are doing cause they do every movie nearly perfect DC has been severely lacking.
Yeah, I was willing to let a lot slide (notably Pa Kent being a jerk and his stupid death) as the movie was enjoyable but making Superman a killer was just a step too far, especially as it just happened, no proper build up, no proper aftermath. If Zod had spent the fight targeting people and Superman was getting beaten to a pulp trying to protect them whilst trying to stop Zod then his decision to kill Zod wouldn't have felt as forced. As it was Zod never won a fight in the whole film, whilst they felt evenly matched you never felt Zod was dominating Superman in their final battle. I get what they were going for but the build up didn't earn it and the aftermath didn't reflect it. They needed to address Zod's death at least a bit in the ending, the graveyard scene would have been perfect, but it's never mentioned.
I still enjoy the film, but I can't deny it's flaws. They've said Mos2/BvS will address the destruction and Zod's death, I'm hoping that it will retrospectively make the ending of MoS more palatable. I don't want them to dwell on it for the entire film (I'd like Superman a little more upbeat) but I don't want it to just be a passing reference, they have to make it worthwhile/count for something otherwise what was the point other than shock value?

And you can find interviews where Snyder explains that he wanted to create a scenario where Superman had no choice, and to give him a reason to have a no-kill rule. But it didn't look like he had no choice. And too many people had died for viewers to feel afraid for that family in danger. Snyder failed to get his point across.
I do hope that they work everything out. And Lex Luthor is the perfect person to hold Superman accountable for his actions and for the destruction. But the cast is getting pretty crowded, at this point. I wonder if anything will get proper attention.

Exactly, I completely get what he was going for. They wanted it more grounded, more "real", the Phantom Zone option was gone, there's no Justice League, no Fortress of Solitude, no way to contain Zod and Zod's just declared genocide on the human race. Looking at it realistically there was no other outcome, Zod died or the world did. But Zod told Superman that in the film, laying down the challenge for him to do what Superman does - the impossible, find another way. Superman essentially fails to be Superman. Snyder grounds him, brings him down to our level to make him feel more real/relatable. To give a reason for Superman not to kill again (which wouldn't be needed if they hadn't butchered Jonathon Kent's character - I get he was speaking out of fear when he said "maybe" but he's meant to be Clark's moral compass, the reason he grows up to be Superman, that didn't come across in MoS).
I'm not worried out the number of characters yet, LOTR, Avengers, plenty of films have shown ensemble casts can be done right (fingers crossed Snyder is up to the challenge). My biggest worry is that having set up this "real" world, I hope they can maintain the integrity whilst bringing in the rest of the DCU. If they don't and Batman can go hand to hand with Superman because "comic book movie" then making Superman kill Zod is wasted.

BUSY.
That's the one word I constantly sum up the designs of the turtles for this movie.
Everything is just way too busy. There's just too much on them. Shredder even just has too much going on to me.
Okay, so the designs are not that bad, but what disturbs me is all the ridicolous ******** they wear. Like how the hell a heavy armor helps ninjas at stealth and jumping between rooftops, if that wasn't over the top enough. And it's not like they don't have shells already.
And about Donnie and his glasses... Hell, why don't they just give him a tee like this:

Sort of sounds the same way via everyone's description. Yep, as busy as they used to sing about in that insane Richard Scarry show. Should have some great fight sceens, clothes or no. And yes, The Foot are probably the types of guys to hit a turtle with glasses, so maybe they'll break early on. Just hope they're nott the $500 variety or there abouts.

Regarding the voices, even though it hasn't been confirmed, but I would assume the actors they've cast in the roles are also doing the voices. They're not just there for the body, all of them are also actors. I have no idea what any of them sounds like.

I like how they use the regular voice when they're voicing the turtles instead of things like Mikey's stereotypical airhead surfer voice got old quick too me and didn't made sense even though I know it was part of his personality. Except for Raph (I like how Sean Astin portrayed him but Josh Pais was iconic Raph for me and defined the character). Except for maybe Alan Ritchson(unless he can portray a great Raph without the stereotypical Brooklyn accent), I do not mind if the turtles don't do accents.
But I agree with Cure, why does Mikey look automatically make people assume the "thug gangsta" type stereotype?

So that's what most people are thinking? Hopefully he'll be more like Mikey. Ya'd think so. I'm also interested in Leo and Raph. What's this about Raph looking rather monstrous? Leo wearing the Samurai getup makes sense. They sound rather like some homages to the costume variants from the 90's.

Ah. I've only just now managed to find a couple of pics of the action figures. Now I can see where the negativity is coming from.
I was basing my 'like' of the new designs on what I could see in the poster and the pic of Leo that had surfaced along with a pic of Raph (on set model I guess).
Now I've seen the action figures, along the previous pics of Raph and Mikey stood together (again set models)...it becomes more clear now...yeah the studios attempts to accessorize each character isn't great.
Without the 'accessories' I thought the designs looked great, I had no problem with tiny holes for nostrils or barely visible lip lines. Even some small accessories like glasses and shoulder plates, I thought "OK, I can live with that". But now I can see they're wearing boots/shorts/trousers etc...not great.
I'm still behind this movie but now I can plainly see where a lot of the disappointment is coming from and I can't defend the inclusion of these over the top accessories...

In the original cartoon the merging of Hamato Yoshi and his pet rat was done in a way to simplify and make the origin story more child friendly compared to the original origin.
The turtles have always been turtles, making them human turned mutants removes one of the more important aspects of their character. Even in IDW it's just their "souls" that was human, the turtles themselves was turtles before mutating.
Besides, that the turtles are looking like the actors portraying them lies In the Hollywood face-time, actors must have in a movie, hence why so many superhero movies the heroes love to take off their mask so often.

I actually like the texture and colors on the turtles Carapace compared to the Maquettes, not all that fancy about the skin coloring, the sea turtle textures looks a wee bit weird. well, read your post before posting it.
There is racism and stereotyping in he Transformers movies, not just with the robots. And seeing that being continued in a children's movie as being funny is a issue.
be careful not to feed the trolls. These forums have seen a flood of new users in the past few weeks, and most of them are on the attack. they love the new film and you don't, so you're a jackhole. They hate the new designs and you like them, so you're a moron. it was like this on the old Transformers boards and the same again on the Joe forums. The good thing is, most of them will be gone by this time next year.

I swear too much negativity on here. Almost regret joining. Hell I thought there would be more than a handful of people looking forward to this movie except it's nothing but a bunch of whining and bitching fanboys and I assume there are fangirls here. There are more people excited over at superherohype than here..pitiful! The designs are not that bad honestly...geez y'all cry worse than babies! "They're BABIES!!!":shredder:

So you people are so adamant in your dislike you'll shun any new fans. He was just saying he thought people would be more understanding not of the movie necessarily but of those who enjoy the new look. I have been a member for a very long time mostly just watching as with many message boards and I find it appalling that so many members have to scream at the top of their lungs all their hate. I may not have a high post count but I have been a fan of the turtles for a very long time pretty close to my whole life and I have learn it is much better to be accepting and understanding then be cynical and that's what all the vocal negative people are cynical. And you constantly drive fans away. So you people really want to be those kinds of fans pushing others who love the same thing you do with there own opinions away with out any regard. That's not fair to the Tmnt franchise your seriously saying you prefer failure over new fans? ? ? And regardless of how good the movie is that's what it will no that what it did to the transformers franchise, regardless of what you thought of the movies, they brought new fans and opened mind that world just as this movie will do.

I just ignore all the negativity that's been going on behind both TMNT and Transformers in general. As someone who grew up with those two franchises, I don't really have much nostalgia. As you get older, You start to realize the things you thought were cool when you were a kid? No longer is for this day and age. Kids today won't like the stuff that came before cause its nothing like how things are today. So these franchises had to get a modern update to make them relevant for today's society of new fans.

I agree with this those of us who grew up with the suits from the original movie thought it was awesome because it was fresh and new and it was real to us, as advanced as forms of entertainment have become now it no longer works. That's not to say I don't love the original movie with the Henson suits though.

Yeah, The originals were great for its time, They just can't hold up with all the modern tech the entertainment industry has today.

I strongly disagree. I think they still hold up and look "real" to me as I watch. Do I know they are suits - well, yeah. But when I watch CG, I know it's CG too - just 2 different styles of "puppets". Both have pros and cons.
This ONLY applies to the 1st movie though - as the quality of the suits began to deteriorate starting with SOTO.....mainly in the faces, as they began to over emphasize facial expressions / movements. Donnie's face from the '90 movie to SOTO is a prime example. The 3rd movie was just horrendous for multiple reasons, starting with the Henson company not handling the suits. Therefore, I fully agree that movies 2 & 3 suits don't hold up very well today.

yeah I don't think so. why does a franchise that's popular right now. one that's selling out merchandise, has a popular tv series running and comic book in print need a reinvention. if it ain't broke don't fix it. this a case of "look how different ours is" plain and simple

That might be true. I remember reading somewhere that bay and co tried it and it didn't look right. But when it comes to the turtles we've seen that look work in live action already its continuing to work right now everywhere else. The new generation of turtles fans are obviously ok with the traditional look and don't consider it cheesy.

I'm trying to figure out where on the "Show, Don't Tell" spectrum the clothing choices of the new Turtles sit.
At its most literal it's showing us the various personalities, but...I kind of get the feeling that even that showing is so blatant it counts as a tell.
Thoughts?

You know, I was kinda wondering the same thing actually. I mean is it possible to actually "visually tell" because these designs do seem pretty close.

I think the blocky designs in Fall for Cybertron is miles above the Bayformers designs.
It is meant to be cheesy, in a fantastical way. Something the live-action movies severely lacks.

I can almost guarantee if they made a new movie with those suits everyone on here would go see it. The movies are timeless people still watch them
Now. I have the 25th anniversary pack with all the movies, and almost just bought them again on Blu ray just cause.

I have all 3 movies as well as the CGI one on Blu-Ray, I bought them cause I only had the first 3 on VHS and never owned them on DVD. So getting the Blu-Ray versions were a must due to them being in HD. Even though there's a lot of film grain. I didnt buy the 25th anniversary ones since they are the same as the individual versions.

Mainly this just screams unnecessary realism to me. Couldn't we go the Marvel route and have just a grounded realism but still keep the absurdity of a comic book?:ohwell:
Edit: On the note of the new Technodrome members if your really fans of the series, why are you just huddled up in the one part of the board? Most new members come here sure but migrate to the sections that made them a fan.

So blindly liking something because its based on the turtles like you have said is stupid but you think if a movie was created with the original suits everyone would blindly watch it just on that fact alone is completely sane your logic is so messed up

The Cybertron games are really freakin' awesome and pretty much what I would have liked to see on film. They even seemed to update them to be a bit more complex while still maintaining the original design.I can almost guarantee if they made a new movie with those suits everyone on here would go see it. Well, probably not if they used THOSE suits. I can't help but sadly speculate they're in poor condition now. :D
I was totally on board with the CG idea, though, especially when Eastman first mentioned it after the CG film released by specifically noting the CG turtles being like Gollum.
I'm just...not sure about the rendition that's being used. 20 years of the turtles being minimalist in their pads and belts for weapons, even without those frequently and not feeling awkward about it at all, it's just WEIRD to see them wearing pants. The foot wraps, even the semi-boots, the armguards, the shoulder armor, all of that I can kind of dig because it just feels like a small extension of the ninja gear, but Mikey wearing pants is just weird to me. Leo wearing the stick-armor chestpiece when he's got a shell seems weird to me (and seems like it would be noisy).
Chains, necklaces, sunglasses, even clothing on clothing all = noise and sound when moving. The lack of clothes I'd think would make them better to move silently.
I'm not "rawr rage hate" on the new designs. I actually dig that Leo statue a lot. I just get more of a sci-fi off-Earth vibe from the clothes based on experience.
And Mikey's lips still grate me more than the others. Dunno why, he just seems to have such big lips! But CG is really hard to judge from still images, so I'm waiting for the trailer.

The problem with doing another movie using those rubber suits is, The actors in them will be limited to what they can do physically, It be much harder to perform some really spectacular stunts with those suits on and the limited vision.
The Motion Capture suits do allow the actors and stunt doubles freedom of movement, So they can perform some pretty wild and spectacular fight scenes. I would love to see the Turtles do things like jumping from walls, Back flips, Doing Cartwheels, All that stuff you see in Martial Arts movies.

The old suits is also degraded by time as the material they were made of was not meant to last.
Now, creature suits have come a long way since the early 90's, just look at the creatures in Hellboy 2, especially Mr. wink.

even if it isn't finished I feel like I've seen enough to tell what the basic concept is and decide if I like it or not. It's like watching somebody cook. if the ingredients don't look appetizing that's enough for me to decide I won't like the meal too much. doesn't mean it won't actually be good just that it will be harder to convince me it is. but that's assuming that what we are seeing isn't the finished product. which brings up the bigger question of why is this movie 6 months away from release and all we've seen from it is coming from leaks. that could be considered a red flag on its own. it implies either there is still at work doing damage control or they're unconfident in the final product. bad sign either way
It really not that plain and simple there adding to there character just like the OT turtle added different mask just like the 2k show added to there character actions, Just like Nick added slight visual modifiers to each characters, this is the same and while for some it might seem over doing it other as my self feel this is just another way to flesh out each character in appearance based on what real people do in real life I guess we're at an impasse. I don't see how this adds anything. dressed up or naked the turtles are the turtles plain and simple. wearing scavenged junk doesn't bring anything new to table its just advertising the personality in the broadest way possible. all the other changes you mentioned happened for clear reasons (though im not sure what you meant about the 2k3 show) this just looks like somebody went out of their way to be creative and your mileage may vary I guess.

Glade you put it this way seeming as i am a professional Chef, this is s total crock concept. If being in the culinary industry has taught me one thing its that you cant say you dislike something unless you have tried it all together anything can be cooked in one way or another to the liking of an one, if you cook it right.
Saying you hate chicken because you hate how its been prepared by others doesn't mean there isn't a way to prepare it that suits your tastes but you cant know that until you have had it in its full glory. some food look terrible but taste great some look great but taste terrible some ingredients don't taste well together or mixed but if you add that one thing you can turn it into something great. Who Is to say that they haven't found the secret thing that brings it all together is all you have seen or heard it but a tiny fraction of the whole.

Im saying this fleshes out their Humanity and the need to feel as apart of society while being there own individuals that what this add IMO. Yes one a base level they're just wearing things but these thing mean something to them Leo Like samurai ninja and bushido so he wears what he feels fit that look in his eyes with what he has. don raph mikey all the same fore their characters.
As for the 2k show im talk about how there personality are more fleshed out compared to the Ot turtles raph characteristically more rude and hot headed then then Ot and the Og comics. Mikey is funnier then the rest more comedic free spirited, Leo was much more Bushido then past versions, don was about the only one to kind of stay the same. plus the changing of the skin tone which was only done with the figures up to that point to further the differentiate there characters

This may be of interest to some of you, but I posted a couple of these 2014 movies images on my Twitter feed, the movie poster and a pic of Leo. Anyway I got an e-mail from Twitter this morning basically saying that they had removed the tweets and images at the request of Paramount. Under the e-mail message from Twitter was Paramount’s message to Twitter.
I was going to post the Paramount message but there's a disclaimer saying not to share it...
"any disclosure, copying, distribution or use of any of the information contained in or attached to this transmission is STRICTLY PROHIBITED"
Makes me surprised they (Paramount) are not sniffing around here...
