Ugh. Yeah Donny's nerd glasses and...apparently Raph's shades now are just silly.

They're not needed. Raph's sunglasses are even too small for him to actually wear so what's the point? Another Bay-ism.

Neat poster though.

Judging from the stuff surrounding the better photo, some kind of convention or trade show setting up and some kind soul is just taking pictures.

I see a Leo kids mask and action figures based on the movie designs.

Point it out for us? I'm not seeing splinter…

I am on board with those saying that Leo looks the best. Donnie's design is discouraging… I am really hoping that they don't wear all of this gear for the entire movie. Maybe just gear up for battle..? Maybe when shredder goes full gigantic blade man, they need to gear up..

I really don't like donnie in glasses. He doesn't need glasses for us to know he is the 'nerd' of the group. It just covers the most iconic feature of the turtles, the bandana

The only real issue I have is with the freakin nerd glasses on Donnie. WTF????? I know we've heard rumors about that, but it's just ridiculous. Ugh.

Oh, and it looks like Mikey really does have a more "humanoid" looking nose when compared to the rest....They all seem to be a bit different with that feature.

No it's beating us over the head with it.

"HE'S THE NERD. HE GETS NERD GLASSES WITH TAPE. GET IT."

It's unnecessary.

We all know he's the techy nerd of the group. And unless the audience is blind and deaf or the people behind the movie screw his character up, the general audience will know too.

They look like goblins! Leo and Don's faces are okay-ish but Raph and Mikey's noses seem to be all I can focus on. I think the broader beaks make the lips less prominent and they all would have benefitted from that.

I must admit that I expected something much worse after having seen the halloween costume. Even so, I think they still look kinda strange, I say it specially because of the lips and the glasses (Raphael's ones look too small for his head, lol). I cannot wait to see the bodies and Splinter's designe.

The poster looks awful. Maybe this is an old mock-up for fairs, and not the theatrical one. That's the "Ninja Turtles" logo that was used a long time ago, and not the newer Mirage-inspired "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" logo that was actually spotted on set. Hopefully the theatrical poster will use the finished CGI character models.

Ugh, where do I begin? These designs look subpar at best. I mean, what's with Donnie' s glasses? Why Are Leo's arms disproportionate? Why is he wearing shoulder pads? Why do they look like sea turtles? I have all these problems and nitpicks and the isn't even out yet. If anything, this poster might just the perfect sign of what to expect from the film.

...Has anyone noticed that each of the Turtles' noses look different? The tip of the nose with Michelangelo and Raphael protrude somewhat more compared to Leonardo's and Donatello's.

Raph's wearing the same mask everyone else is, it's just he's backlit by red light, and so it blends into his head.

Sunglasses make sense to me. They live underground, and if they go up during the day not only are their eyes going to need to adjust, but ...they have to hide. Easiest to hide one's eyes that way.

Uh, no.

These are the 'Promo Arts' from the mock designs in those early days where the film was still called "Ninja Turtles" - Since then, the name has changed as well as some design differences that were noticeable on the set which features ACTUAL Models of what the Turtles look like.

So in actuality, rather than that random Promo poster at some Toy Fair, THIS is the current look being portrayed in the movie:

if anything they're way older then the Marquettes we have seen. Seriously Guys you really know how to over react. This was meant as a basic of basic visuals for venders to know basic look and feel Not final production valued visuals. and the designs as with anything CGI will probably constantly go through changes till the date they are release to be distributed.

If something doesn't play well, we can always code it differently.

Wouldn't the opposite be more likely? I'd think the maquettes designed for reference during filming (which was happening in late summer 2013) would have existed before a poster created to promote merchandise that's only being revealed now.

That's not to say that the designs on the poster will look just like the final product, but wouldn't it make sense to assume this poster would be the most recent example available?

Not when it comes to trade shows they use original ideas and concept even if they are no longer within the movie. its just how the industry works.

Except they don't differ much from the maquettes at all. In fact Michelangelo in that poster has elements present in that halloween costume which I think is safe to say was as good as based on the final design that's missing on the maquette.

Hasn't one of the people who saw the action figures said Don had the glasses with tape around it like that poster.

I'd say both have taken a few liberties with the faces but I'd argue the poster might be a better indication of how they will look in action as opposed to the expressionless maquettes.

Which just further proves this is older material and not as well refined as a final product that will be released

Whoa- again, just commenting on the poster that we have actually had a chance to see.
We all know that shots will be refined as post comes to an end.

But from what we have seen, so far, new or old, it does have a john carter look, IMO.

I personally disagree But i will see for my self when i see it. I am Personally really excited about it. And i was just commenting on the fact that there's a lot of nit picking on basic tiny details that most likely will not be very visible, and will be inconsequential

Nothing wrong about nitpicking on what little we've got, hopefully they will change the textures on the lips, cause they stand put like a sore thumb as they are now, both on the poster and the studio figures.

....I don't know what to say...don't get me wrong, they look bad, but not AS bad as I thought they'd be...yay? Let's go through each turtle...

Don: He looks way too over the top. First of all, look at his face. He looks elderly. And at all that tech gear? He's gonna be wearing that the whole time? The nerd glasses with tape? REALLY? I can't believe this is how my favorite character is gonna look...oh well.

Mike: To be honest, he's the only one I actually like. Despite all his accessories, he looks the most normal out of all of them.

Raph: By far the worst...I can't even tell where his head and eyes start or end...way too busy of a design, and way too bulky. He looks ridiculous.

Leo: He's just ok....nothing special but nothing necessarily bad.

Overall I don't like the human type noses with nostrils and lips...not too impressed by them. I won't judge the whole movie by the designs, though. The movie itself could still be good.....?

Yeah, honestly, this is a pretty bad poster. Leo's position looks pretty weird. Not happy with the fact Donnie has nerd glasses, or with Raph's face. Mikey's okay, only problem with him are those darn turtle lips.

But overall, the designs, while not very good, are better than what I expected.

If I were to make a comparison I would say this style reminds me of later day Mirage or 4kids mixed with Steve Baron's concepts for tmnt 2 (Had some trouble linking said art but perhaps someone can help out).

I personally couldn't have asked for cooler inspirations and I think the team did a really good job designing these guys in a way that fits the expectations of general audiences today while giving long time fans something faithful enough yet fresh.

....I don't know what to say...don't get me wrong, they look bad, but not AS bad as I thought they'd be...yay? Let's go through each turtle... I love the look not trying to argue just some opinions myself

Don: He looks way too over the top. First of all, look at his face. He looks elderly. And at all that tech gear? He's gonna be wearing that the whole time? The nerd glasses with tape? REALLY? I can't believe this is how my favorite character is gonna look...oh well.I dont se how he looks elderly in anyway, As for the tech gear well really if don if don could carry around all his tech stuff would he not if he found a way? Plus i doubt he will have it the whole time. The glasses as said before will likely not be worn the whole time and think about Don's gap in the Nick series people hatted that just for the same reasons but it adds to his character and is a neat trait to have hopefully the glasses will add the same thing

Mike: To be honest, he's the only one I actually like. Despite all his accessories, he looks the most normal out of all of them. I like him to remind me of Mikey just everything to me screams mikey I can see him goofing around with his nunchaku.

Raph: By far the worst...I can't even tell where his head and eyes start or end...way too busy of a design, and way too bulky. He looks ridiculous. To be honest though there is quite a glare i think this also looks like Raph similar to his bulky looking self in the 2007 movie and even in the nick toon is quite large he was always the physical one and he looks that way and cluttered he seems like the least cluttered of them all a red bandana and loincloth that about it to him looks fine to me.

Leo: He's just ok....nothing special but nothing necessarily bad.I love this look Samurai Awesomeness badassory i could see him flipping throwing shurikens like a boss

Overall I don't like the human type noses with nostrils and lips...not too impressed by them. I won't judge the whole movie by the designs, though. The movie itself could still be good.....? The human noses look a lot less prominent in the Marquettes but turtles do have prominent nostrils as human have noses so merging them seem plausible
but so playful countering

Why is everyone complaining about the taped up glasses?

A mutated turtle needs to have perfect vision?

You guys, think about it. Donatello's head is wider than a normal human head. Didn't it occur to anyone that since obviously they don't make extra wide glasses for a mutant turtle head, maybe Donatello broke the glasses in the middle and extended the bridge with tape so that the lenses are an appropriate length apart so he can see out of them?

If you ask me, that seems like a far more reasonable explanation about the glasses.

Speaking for myself, I don't care about the logic behind it. I don't like it because it's just more overdesigned nonsense. He's already got all the busy tech gear and whatnot. Sometimes less is more. Bandanas and a few leather accessories has worked for the Turtles for ages. I'm not saying they should have to be captive to that design entirely, but it seems like they intentionally went too far in the other direction. These Turtles remind me of those desperate redesigns you see all the time on Deviant Art.

Personally I think they are pushing the arch types of the characters really hard. Leo is the Bushido Samurai warrior because he has swords. Raph has a tough guy look because he's the tough one and cool so sunglasses because screw you that's why. Mikey is the modern Turtle so give him a hipster look which means he will have all the jokes and pop culture references. I don't tend to add my opinions often because of avoiding arguments but since most of us are able to agree on this - awful. My hope was the designs, at minimum, would be bearable but Michael Bay has struck again. I don't understand why such drastic makeovers were necessary. I hope for the sake of the franchise this movie doesn't affect anything however I personally struggle with supporting this one bit. This will just be another bump in the road like 'The Next Mutation.' ...sigh.

For Christ's sake. About two minutes of thought were put into their individual designs:

"Hey, Donatello is smart! He can wear glasses! Then people will know he's smart!"
"Raph is tough! He can wear sunglasses that don't fit him! All the cool kids wear those!"
"Mikey is some sort of dude or something. He can wear a chain necklace!"

I'm not saying it's an easy task, but GOD. Don't put 10-year-olds in charge of character design.

No, two minutes of thought would just have them copied and pasted from previous incarnations.

This is great because it's something new but still recognisable and that's exactly what the franchise needed, otherwise it'd become stale and boring!

Change for the sake of change is not good.

ADAPTING the Turtle's look to fit the style of your take? That's fine. That's expected(as long as it's good). Out of the Shadows did that and it worked really well. OotS Turtles look great.

They're beating us over the head with over-designed aspects of their personalities because Bay and Liebesman play to the lowest common denominator.

And those are the key words: Over-designed, lowest common denominator.

Not to mention the fact that their faces are just bad. Just plain poorly designed.

I think this poster is complete crap. And Raph and Don's glasses are stupid as anything. But, if I'm ignoring the photoshop fail and terribly anatomy that probably WON'T be present in the actual film, I'm still pretty excited about their actual designs. Leo actually looks the worst to me imo, I think because his lips just look so pronounced and he looks the most freaky human hybrid out of all the four, but it's not so terrible that I'm gagging like I was when I saw that horrific Halloween mask. Useless accessories (aside from those moronic glasses), just don't get me all that riled up. They're annoying, but nothing to really whine about.

Fugly Looking Trolls with DSL lips.

I'm tired of this BS that 'just because it's Different, it's automatically a good thing'.

Let's be honest folks. If people had a poll of "which looks better, these designs or the designs from the first 2 movies", the original designs would win.

Now think about that. A low budget film from about 24 years ago has better looking designs (and better looking characters) than a $100 million production in today's age. Doesn't that tell anybody something? Isn't that sad?

I'd take an updated (and by updated I mean using the tech to maybe have the faces move better during fight scenes) look of the original suits over these troll looking dummies any day. That simple.

Fugly Looking Trolls with DSL lips.."OMG they have lips the look like crap" is so stupid lips don't make pr break a character it away for them to Articulate word realistically that what you get with a more realistic style like this and mocap im just surprised people are surprised they actually have then it mocap and there using facial mocap

I'm tired of this BS that 'just because it's Different, it's automatically a good thing'. .and yet look at your avatar the style that artist uses is quite similar to that of this very movie a realistic large darker version. this is different yes but this does not make it bad just different.

Let's be honest folks. If people had a poll of "which looks better, these designs or the designs from the first 2 movies", the original designs would win. . I would differently say that while Jim henson Was a Genius his suit and tech are far outdated for this day and age. we haven't seen them in action i would bet that after seeing the in action they will look better then any practical effects could offer this is why we use CGI instead of Practical in the first place.

Now think about that. A low budget film from about 24 years ago has better looking designs (and better looking characters) than a $100 million production in today's age. Doesn't that tell anybody something? Isn't that sad?. I disagree that these design are worse there different that is all.

Tell that to Steven Spielberg who produced the Transformer films, who made them put the humans up front in those movies (which he produced). Don't believe me, listen to the audio commentary from the writers themselves, who said "Spielberg said that the audience could only identify if the Humans are in the foreground, not the machines." And Spielberg was the big decision maker on that front, since he referenced stuff like "E.T."

And he was just a 'producer'. And that's a problem a lot of people had with those movies.

Hell, read up on all the problems that director Tobe Hooper had with Poltergeist and Steven Spielberg's involvement and extreme influence in that production (who just 'produced' it.)

Or read up on the movie Dredd, which the producer took away from the director and recut the movie.

Am I 'educated enough' for ya?

If you don't think that a producer (who has a bigger name and a hell of a lot more power than Liebesman) can influence decisions in pre-production let alone a project itself, then you are only fooling yourself.

I think producers have a HUGE influence on the final product because if a director starts trying to do something they don't like they will just cut the funds until they get in line. I'm sure Bay will have plenty of say in this movie because he controls the purse.

So they really are going with the title "Ninja Turtles" not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? I'd be fine with that except for concerns that they might not be teenagers and they might not be mutants! Both are important, at least if we are talking about a film reboot where you should establish those things first, then if you wanted to make them non-teens later I guess that would be fine.

Just wanna say I don't hate the designs. I think Out of the Shadows forced me to get used to the whole nostrils thing even if I prefer they be either not there are very subtle. Main problem is I still feel they are too HUGE. Why so big?

Why is everyone complaining about the taped up glasses?

A mutated turtle needs to have perfect vision?

You guys, think about it. Donatello's head is wider than a normal human head. Didn't it occur to anyone that since obviously they don't make extra wide glasses for a mutant turtle head, maybe Donatello broke the glasses in the middle and extended the bridge with tape so that the lenses are an appropriate length apart so he can see out of them?

If you ask me, that seems like a far more reasonable explanation about the glasses.
By that logic, Raph and Mike should have broken their glasses too.
Even in the on-set disguise shots with Megan Fox, they are wearing normal scene/hipster glasses.
We have yet to see if Leo owns some shades.

I know. I didnt say he was director.

I meant people like hating because of his involvement.

If the movie had nothing to do with Bay I doubt they're would be as much negative judgement like saying the turtles are too big or the clothes are dumb.
I can tell you right now, even if it was Edgar Wright, I would be saying "WTF" and doing the same thing all over the place.
Bay's name is an extra prick in the side when thinking of this project... along with the director.

What legal reason could Viacom have to get a picture of a poster at a toy fair taken down? They don't own the picture that some random attendee took.

Overall, I'm much happier with the designs than I thought I would be.

The one thing that's bugging the snipes out of me has to do with people constantly commenting on Donnie's glasses. You're assuming a lot. For one, due to his beak, there's no way he would fit in any regular pair of glasses, thus the broken frames and tape. Kind of a necessity there. The big assumption bugging me is that people are assuming that they only gave them to Donnie to "nerd him up." Here's the deal: if you work on computers and/or with wiring, small parts, etc. a LOT you normally jive better with having a pair of magnifiers - and not the ridiculous jewelry style ones, but a basic pair of reading glasses. Could I see them as a necessary tool that Donnie might have in his arsenal when teching? Yes. Necessary for the poster? Maybe not.

As far as Raph's full bandana goes, well, it screams '90s gangsta, and for some odd reason, I see it fitting him well. The sun glasses, despite some comments, look like they would just barely fit, but I could see them being used. (As someone who rocks frames, sometimes you deal with frames being super tight if it fits the need.)

The more I see the concept work, the less the noses bug me. Depending on what turtle-verse and background story you go with, it would make sense for the guys to have human-esc characteristics.

Wow! Those images are incredible! First sniff of anything I've seen since the kids Mikey costume pic that was leaked!

I for one am very impressed and have some faith restored in this project.

I find it hard to comprehend why some people hate these designs SOoooo much?...each to his own I guess, everyone's entitled to their opinion. If we all liked the same thing we'd all drive the same cars, have the same looking wives....

Massively excited now...

As for the size we dont know how much bigger they are compared to humans. The original live action turtles were bigger than the humans and no one complained about that.

That picture of the disguised Raph has him towering over Megan Fox, so they're definitely on the tall side. Six feet or taller, I'd guess.

And the 1990 Turtles were actually shorter than most humans, as in the comics and cartoon at the time:

(Granted, Jim Henson was 6'3", but they're all significantly shorter than him.)

It may be because I've been along for the entire TMNT ride thus far but I don't think these are all that bad.
Is it the direction I wanted for the movie? Nope.
I'm not the one making the movie though so until I make a TMNT I can't complain all that much.
I'll see it but I've got low expectations going in, which could be good.
I do have to say though this look would have worked better for a comic or one off series of toys or something.
Personally I'd have gone with the a mirage look (Peter or Kevin style).
I think it's the noses and lips that kill the design the most though.
They really remind me of the 90's Henson show Dinosaurs.
A friend of mine I showed the poster to told me the turtles faces almost looked like black stereotypes to him. Looking particularly at Mikey, I can't unsee it myself now.

>_O
Yeah that's what a friend at work said and now I can't unsee that either.:ohwell:

Still not sure what I think. I agree with the whole "Fan Art to the X-TREME!" thought of Powder and I've been thinking of the taped glasses, maybe it's out of necessity rather than "NERD!!!!" coding. I mean the bridge of Donnie's beak is larger than the bridge of a human's nose. Just playing devil's advocate. :P

This one looks better

And with this new change in design trying to "express" themselves it's most likely hipster glasses. But who knows. It can be debated, it won't be explained in the movie most likely so it's just trivial really.

every time i get even a little hope for this movie, i remember that Liebesman is directing and that Megan Fox is in it...

Man, you're as big a broken record as Cybercubed about White Shredder and TurtleFanForever about the Nick series.

Man, you're as big a broken record as Cybercubed about White Shredder and TurtleFanForever about the Nick series.

You've expressed your view and metephorical heigharchy that everyone on here must have the same view, and the only ones that matter have the same view as you. Your narcissistic views and false sense of superiority can only be surpassed by powders sophomoric jests about the mentally handicapped people.

Based on the sloppy photoshop work I'm guess that this is just a poster created in-house by a designer at Playmates (using turtle render assets) and not the official poster of the movie.

i'm ok with most of the look. the lips are a bit distracting though. i wish they would be less large and less texturized. they should look more smooth.

Yeah Jester, was thinking the same thing concerning the extreme here from several descriptions. I'm picturing them with the normal turtle beaks with humanoid lips at the ends. Then someone else said that they look like goblins, so like you, not sure what to think. I've also been laughing because a good number of us are complaining about the clothes. I guess we've all grown accustom to a bunch of turtles in their birthday suits over the years? I certainly include myself among that number. I think the turtles were meant to be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMndcQI4l9k hehe but that's just me.

[Mod Edit: Image removed by request of Paramount.]

If you looks ar the models and the post though and look at the actors playing them i can see there faces they guy playing mikey has larger more pronounced lips so of course we will see more of that in him same goes for the rest they have the facial features of the people playing them

electric_sheep

so the only explanation is that the turtles where designed a long time ago, they reworked the face just a little to resemble the actors...

no im saying that why like and noses look the way they do it is because they look like the actors and i remember a while back them saying the turtle will be the most expressive they have even been. they look like the actor(which is fine by me kinda expected this from the start)

I was all on board with what we've seen on the designs until now, but uuuuuuuugh, those glasses.

Then again, I know the kind of subtlety I can expect from any Bay-related production by now. Early design peeks had me a little excited for the overall approach, but hey, I generally hold the Transformers designs as the only good thing about those movies too.

Also, on the whole, unless it's just the photo or the poster, these things came across much better in the original sculpts than they do rendered in CGI.

Re: Director vs. producer talk a few pages back: The truth is, when it comes to large studio projects like these, the director is basically just a project-manager for the producer. And sometimes only after pre-production.

Because that's ever actually been a legitimate concern by people over the age of 3?
