the tmnt cartoons and their respective toylines

I noticed a kind of backwards thing with the toys and cartoons. In the old show, the series was very toybased. Like, Playmates would release various figures and eventually they'd be in the show. They'd skip a few like Fugitoid and Pizza Face, but for the most part every new figure or vehicle would wind up in the show around the time of their release.

Now that's not to say the new show isn't completely non-toybased. We still see Donnie crankin out the Sewer Slider, ShellCycle, Shell Sub and other stuff. But the figures are different. Now the figures are based on the show, not the other way around. In fact I think the only figure that appeared in toy form before they were in the cartoon were the Foot Gunners and Turtlebot. I think the only figures not appearing in the cartoon are the giant mouser and their take on baxter.

Kazari 09-20-2004 04:19 AM

No actually a LOT of the new toys that are coming out are not based on the show. I have seen pics of them *nods*

Coola Yagami 09-20-2004 10:15 AM

which ones? Like I said, all the figures except the Giant Mouser and their version of Baxter are already in the show. The newer ones like the Guardian Ninja, Shredder Clones and the upcoming Splinter in the stasis pod and Usagi Yojimbo are all from the show too. Hell, we're overdue for a Karai figure dammit. The variants don't count cause it's not like the TMNT are gonna start wearing all kinds of stupid outfits just cause of the figures.

Karai 09-20-2004 10:29 AM

The Turtles variants are the only toys I can figure are not featured in the show. Otherwise, I do agree with you - The old series tended to go off Playmates' toy designs and stick in those random characters in different episodes wherever they could. This time the cartoon is holding the reigns and playing leader to Playmates', which I think is smart. Doesn't mean they're making great toys these days (some of the new stuff is disappointing, but others I'm really anxious to start collecting) but I think it's a vast improvement. Besides...

Playmates did a perfectly good job on their Slash figure and look what the animators of the old toon did to him. Perhaps they've learned their lesson.

JDavis 09-20-2004 07:26 PM

Don't forget, some of the old toys were based on the Archie TMNT characters as well.

Kazari 09-20-2004 07:27 PM

No they have Ripped Turtles, and Knight Turtles as well. I am waiting for the Big Brawl figurines! Those look cool!!

KROW 09-20-2004 07:30 PM

I am still anxiously awaiting the Drag Queen Turtles.

lmao oh you know what I mean.

Anyways, I agree with the person that wanted Fallen Angel TMNT. The thing is, Playmates makes their stuff look too goofy and childish instead of really make it look bad-ass. I see my MOTU figures and check out the awesome variants of He Man/Skeletor I have and think Playmates would rather make the TMNT wear disco outfits reather than kick-ass armor. I think the tmnt dressed the way they were in Fallen Angel would be the coolest variants ever, especially when compared to those astronauts and scuba diver ones.

Kazari 09-20-2004 08:56 PM

then they should make figures that are not meant to be toys like they do with anime figures and stuff and make them to be in their outfits from Golden Puck and Fallen Angel!:D

MasterMole 09-22-2004 03:24 PM

Definately, there should be variant figures from the episode "Fallen Angel." They looked cool in that episode, wearing hoods, chains, and shades.
I just don't know why we're not getting them. It makes perfect sense to make these figures, right from the show. Some kind of "Undercover" Turtles would be nice. Instead, they're making these non-show variants that are just silly. It would be fine if these silly figures were made, but first make show-accurate variants; for crying outloud.

Kazari 09-22-2004 03:26 PM

Trust me I keep emailing them about it! LOL

NeoBix 09-22-2004 07:06 PM

What's wrong with the old toon Slash? I thought he was cool.

Kazari 09-22-2004 08:30 PM

Stupid as a seaslug slash :P

NeoBix 09-23-2004 04:56 AM

He was stupid as a seaslug??? lol why???

from what I remember he was pretty cool. then again that was a long time ago that I saw him on the old toon.

Orochi Chimera 09-23-2004 06:06 AM

I do like slash from the original series but his character design wasn't that good. They made him kind of goofy. They should have drawn him exactly the way they did in the comics.

Coola Yagami 09-23-2004 07:32 AM

Yeah, what was so bad or violent about a turtle with black banadana/shoulder/kneepads? They gave him metal crap and it's not even black and these big ol buckteeth, and even though he was more of a serious threat in his premier ep, he became a complete moron in his return appearances.

NeoBix 09-23-2004 07:49 AM

Ah... I see... yeah. What's up with those buck teeth lol... is he a redneck turtle??

Sadako*sCranes 09-23-2004 02:45 PM

*sees TV show Slash* Argh! Hideous! :tsweatdr: :tthumbsd:
*sees comic book Slash* Wow! Cool! :tgrin: :tthumbsu:
Man, I need to dig out my old Slash figure along with my other old figures!

Kazari 09-23-2004 04:01 PM

NeoBix, when I Said "stupid as a seaslug Slash" I was quoting that from Don in the old toon! LOL

Orochi Chimera 09-23-2004 05:37 PM

This style of artwork wouldn't have really matched the shows style but it would been have been better as well:
