TMNT and Fantastic 4

I was watching the first Fantastic 4 movie and noticed a lot of similarities between these two foursome teams.
Ben Grimm/The Thing = Raphael
Johnny Storm/Human Torch = Michaelangelo
Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic = Donatello
Sue Storm (Richards)/Invisible Woman = Leonardo
I know Mr. Fantastic is the leader, but he just has so many similar qualities to Donatello, and Invisible Woman is very straight-laced and serious stuff, like Leo. The Thing is a nice guy, but also a loyal protector and kind of the tough guy of the group, like Raph. And The Human Torch is always making jokes and egging Thing on, like what Mike does with Raph.
Some of you will probably disagree with my logic, like you may think Human Torch is more of Raph and Thing is more of Mike and Mr. Fantastic is more Leo and whatnot, but I stand by my logic.
If Raph and Mikey were arguing and it got heated and looked like it would turn into a fist fight, who would you imagine coming in to break up the fight, Leo or Don? Of course, Leo. In the Fantastic 4 movie, Thing and Human Torch fight and who comes in to break it up, Invisible Woman. Mr. Fantastic is a leader who is kinda distant from the others, like he works out his plans without being near the others while the others are either fighting or trying to stop the fight. Mr. Fantastic is kind of a pushover. The more I thought about it, The Fantastic 4 seemed kinda like how the Ninja Turtles would be if Donatello were the leader. When Don was the leader in the OT episode, Take Me To Your Leader, he calculated for a long time before coming to a decision about what to do, which is how Mr. Fantastic works as a leader, and Invisible Woman just follows orders and doesn't question them, which is something Leo would do if he weren't leader, and The Thing sometimes questions what the leader's plans are, but in the end does as he's told, like Raph. Don would be a leader, Raph and Mike would argue and Leo would be the straight-lace one who always follows orders and makes the others look bad sometimes and breaks up the fights between Raph and Mike.

Anybody agree or have something to say about it?

Even as "The Thing", Ben Grimm is still the most normal of the Fantastic Four by far.

On the other hand, I do not think there is such a thing as a "normal" Turtle. All 4 of them are weird in their own ways.

I like the Fantastic Four a lot and will be watching the new movie on Sunday. But while it is the Marvel team I like best, I have not gotten into them like I have gotten into the TMNT. Too many series and universes to follow.

Roseangelo 06-15-2007 05:01 PM

The four personality types of the TMNT aren't particularly unique; you can actually find the same basic four personalities in many foursomes.

MoreCowbell5263 06-15-2007 05:17 PM

I just remembered the movie showing Mr. Fantastic analyzing every little detail about every little step before actually taking a step, which is kinda how Donatello lead the team, so I thought, "This is how the Turtles would be if Don were the leader," in which case Leo would be like the one who follows all the orders and stuff and stops the fights between the others.

Scandia 06-15-2007 05:42 PM

Usually in foursomes there is a "normal" one- a Sensing Judger. The Turtles lack one of those. There are two Sensing Perceivers, an iNtuitive Feeler (two if you count Splinter), and an iNtuitive Thinker. I think Eastman and Laird did this on purpose to show how odd and unusual the Turtles are.

In the Fantastic Four, Ben Grimm would be the SJ, Johnny the SP, Susan the NF, and Reed the NT.

The Shelf 06-15-2007 06:13 PM

LoL @ Leo = Sue Storm.

Sorry, I just had to get that out. I agree, but it's just too darn funny. :tlol:

And since two of the Fantastic Four are romantically involved, later married, to compare the FF to the TMNT would just end up drawing disturbing comparisons anyway.

Spawn Guy 06-15-2007 07:34 PM

Slash fics already beat you to it.

Revan 06-15-2007 11:31 PM

I agree cowbell. The personalities seem to be quite generic when it comes to teams. x-men, fantastic 4, and tmnt all share similarites which is probably why people stay true to the advice, if it works, stick with it.

Buslady 06-16-2007 09:02 AM

Yah, Ben = Raph. I wrote a one shot of them two meeting. They're both in NYC, why not? :D They both have style, big coat & hat lol!

Johnny's a little bit Raph too, but alot Mikey. He is short tempered. But he sure has Mike's big fat ego and likes to egg on Ben for reaction.
I love the scene in part 1 - Johnny's being interviewed after his stunt with the bike; Ben's having a fit but then they get there....they argue and then Ben turns to get out of the situation before he hurts Johnny, but then a ball of flame hits him...wham! "Did you just-"? Mike Chiklis did that scene perfectly....

I love Ben almost as much as Raph, my male tortoise is Ben (his new g/f is Alicia) and I have a 18" maquette of the movie Ben right here on my desk. He guards my computer :D

Scandia 06-16-2007 01:31 PM

Regarding foursomes, I would imagine the standard distribution to have:

1 Turtle be very much like Splinter
2 Turtles be somewhat like Splinter and somewhat not like him (to varying degrees, not necessarily equally so or with the same similarities and differences)
1 Turtle be very little like Splinter

But in the Turtles case, it is:

1 very much alike
1 somewhere in the middle
2 very little like him!!!

I wonder why this not-standard distribution was picked for their personalities.

Spawn Guy 06-16-2007 02:17 PM

I...fail to see the diffrence in those two approaches. Kevin and Peter were big Kirby fans so it's not impossible some of the FF was used, but the X Men and Daredevil probably played a bigger role given what they ware parodying at the time.

I've always assumed it to be Thor.

Spawn Guy 06-16-2007 03:02 PM

I'm talking about the guy between Thortule and Captain Ameriturtle. The ax guy.

I named them buy the way.

Roseangelo 06-16-2007 03:10 PM

Oooh.. that one I had pegged as Conan the Barbarian, but my knowledge of comic book barbarian characters is rather limited.

Spawn Guy 06-16-2007 03:31 PM

Marvel did Conan? Yeesh, and I thought Godzilla was weird. I love silverageish Iron Turtle though.

Andrew NDB 06-16-2007 04:46 PM

Killraven?

Doesn't seem to resemble him. Probably is Conan.

Yes, the Marvel comic ran from 1970 to the mid 90's when Marvel
dropped the property due to poor sales.

Here's issue #1:

Leo is a cross-dressing invisible leader who nobody listens to?

Sage Ninja 06-16-2007 11:19 PM

how about TMNT boys compared to the best friend foursome from That 70's Show ? What are the personality similarities with Feze, (is that hows its spelled?) Eric Forman, Michael Kelso, and Steven Hyde with Don, Raph, Leo and Mikey?

A friend of mine recently (and successfully) compared the four Turtles to the four girls in Bubblegum Crisis. They're seriously not unique personality types.

It isn't a perfect match, but I think Foreman would be Leo, Kelso would be Mike, Hyde would be Raph, and Fez as Don. Fez isn't the smartest, but seems to have many other Don-esque traits. Hyde's the badass, very Raph. Kelso is the funny, not-as-smart one, even though Mike has proven not to be dumb in other mediums. Eric is clearly the glue that holds them together, they meet in his garage and count on him a lot, making him the leader, i.e. Leo.

Or in any given person, really. That's why I think they're so appealing, personally. Everyone can relate to them because, aside from being turtles, they ARE everybody.

Scandia 06-18-2007 07:27 PM

TMNT as Bubblegum Crisis- at least the 2040 version, since that's the one I have watched.

Donatello would definitely be Nene Romanova

But the other 3, it is not so clear cut

Priss Asagiri - Raphael?
Sylia Stingray- Leonardo?
Linna Yamazaki- Michelangelo?

MoreCowbell5263 06-18-2007 10:00 PM

X-Men...
Cyclops = Leo
Beast = Don
Wolverine = Raph
Gambit = Mike

I know the Ninja Turtles have basic personalities and there are other teams like them, but the X-Men and Fantastic 4 are the only ones I can come up with really.

TMNT and Voltron:

Leo- Keith
Donnie- Pidge
Mikey- Hunk
Raph- Lance (best match of the bunch)

Voltron is a fivesome...but Lance is A LOT like Raphael!

No matter how hard I try, I cannot quite match them to the Planeteers. The only one that comes even close to being a good match is Mikey for Wheeler.

Sage Ninja 06-20-2007 09:37 AM

TMNT and the Golden Girls!!! :P

or...

Sex in the City :evilgrin:

Rooish 06-20-2007 09:54 PM

I actually think the Turtles are, as a foursome, pretty hard to apply to other foursomes. I suppose each group has a smart one, a sensible one, a funny one and a rebel, but the Turtles are so complex I have difficulty finding any of them to be very similar with other characters.

I think it's a good question, though. Obviously they work pretty well as X-Men. I haven't seen enough Golden Girls or Sex and the City to compare. As for That 70s Show ... I like the comparison but it's still kind of hard. Because no one is really Fez or Kelso (okay, maybe Mikey is a little Kelso). Leo works okay as Foreman though, and Raph works as Hyde.

Let's try, um ... Beast Wars!
Leo - Optimus Primal (OT Leo would be Silverbolt, so Splinter can be Optimus)
Don - Rhinox
Raph - Rattrap
Mike - Well, Cheetor I guess. Or he can be Rattrap; Raph can be Dinobot.

What other possible comparisons are there? I am drawing a blank on any actual comparable foursomes, so I'll just select random characters.

Um, Buffy!
Splinter - Giles
Leo - Buffy
Don - Willow
Raph - Spike
Mike - Xander

And Watership Down!
Leo - Hazel
Don - Blackberry
Raph - Bigwig
Mike - Bluebell
Splinter - Holly? or Fiver???

the ninja turtles with the Real Ghostbusters cartoon

Peter

Egon

Ray

Winston

or (because I love the Ghostbuster so much) the characters from Extreme Ghostbusters

Roland

Garett

Kyle

Edwardo

Leo = Superman
Don = Martian Manhunter
Raph = Batman
Mike = Flash

TMNT as Seinfeld...
Leo = Jerry
Don = Elaine
Raph = George
Mike = Kramer

TMNT as Simpsons...
Leo = Marge

Fixed. And, since that's clearly not enough, here are some nice juicy words to finish this sentence.

MoreCowbell5263 06-25-2007 02:03 PM

I don't know much about DC superheroes, who's John Stuart? Is he some other version of Batman? Don being Batman? Hmm, well, I'll take your word on that, but Batman seems more of a badass to relate to Don, although he is the world's greatest detective, so I see how that can relate to Don.

Sage Ninja 06-26-2007 01:06 AM

since no one bothered to answer mine, I'll do it:

Real Ghostbusters, I really see more similarites to the OT TMNT personalites and the classic GB foursome. This is what i think:

Peter: Raphael

Egon: Leonardo

Ray: Donatello

Winstin: Michaelangelo

_______________________

in the Extreme Ghostbuster cartoon I see mostly NT personalty similarites

Roland: Leonardo

Garret: Raphael

Edwardo: Michaelangelo

Kyle: Loosely like Donatelloonly because she is very smart and studious.

How about TMNT and Futurama?

Fry

Leela

Professor

Bender

all the other characters like Amy Hermes and Zoidberg are nothing but character fodder :lol:

MoreCowbell5263 06-26-2007 01:41 AM

Given those four Futurama characters, I gotta say:
Fry - Mike
Leela - Leo
Bender - Raph
Professor Farnsworth/Doctor Zoidberg - Don

Makes sense seeing is how Mike and Raph are close and Fry and Bender are the same.

Spawn Guy 06-26-2007 05:56 AM

John Stuart is the token black Green Lantern. He and Batman are the team tacticians, and how does that not fit Leo? Batman is, as you said, the world's greatest detective. He's also the smartest member in the JLA, so yeah: Don ha more in common with him than J'onn.

Sewer Bull 06-26-2007 06:20 AM

Powerpuff Girls, duh!

Blossom - Leo
Buttercup - Raph
Bubbles - Mikey
Prof. Utoniun - a blend of Don/Splinter
Mojo Jojo - The Shredder
Mayor - Casey Jones (by means of the overall goofiness)
Ms. Sara Bellum - April (by means of the red-headed hotness)

Smart, non?

It just proves that cartoons/comics/movies/TV shows use exactly the same scheme and the set of character personalities over and over again.
