Same as it Never Was, question
Quick question. I have seen it debated at least once before but couldn't seem to find the thread.
Is Leonardo blind in the episode "Same as it Never Was?" He wore the black blinders. and at certain points throughout the episode he seemed to be acting like he could not see but at other times he could clearly see what he was doing? Anything official on this? |
They never say I always assumed he was. If I remember correctly he doesn't know it's Raph behind him till Raph says anything. I think he was doing the whole "blind swordsman" thing.
|
I haven't read many of the comics but If I remember right I think I was told Leo went blind. The conditions of Leo, Mikey, and Raph were based on what happened in the comics so I would have to guess he was blind.
|
Still my favorite episode of 2k3...paced a little fast, but still...great mood to it. Fast Forward should have been this world.:D Here's hoping that one of the season 3 releases uses this as inspiration for a cover...it's possible.
|
I loved this episode! it was really cool and when it first came out I watched several times. But as to the blind thing, I kinda thought that Raph was the one that was blind, or at least particially so since he was missing one of his eyes.
|
It really says a lot about Leo's other senses if he can fight so well without seeing his opponent. Not that hard to believe though considering the series we are talking about.
When I watch this ep I try and disect whether Leo can see or not and I am never 100% sure. |
He is not blind. In the script he is simply referred to as "Scarred Leo" and there is no mention of him with any kind of vision impairment. I guess he just thought the shades looked cool or something.
|
That they did...Good look for Leo. We need more episodes like this 4kids;););)
|
A part of me assumed he took up the Hamato mantle of Guardian.
|
interesting, then why couldnt we see his eyes behind the shades? i could be wrong, i'll check, but i think his eyes were shut. We shoulda been able to see a little eye.

No...there wasn't. But he had the shades and the similar belt with one sword.

Something just dawned on me as I re-watched SaiNW. The episode is set 30 years in the future of a time line where Donatello goes missing. Something occurred to me, does it actually refer to Donnie's vanishing when he and his brothers are attacked by Ultimate Draco? (I mean they are all whisked across time and space.) When else could Donatello have gone missing?

The thing about time travel is... it's confusing to explain. For example if Don never came back from Kirby's world, how could he have met draco and been sent to the future... wait... he could have met draco and then been sent back into time, and then into the future...or... um... ahhh... :o my head hurts |
I know, that's exactly why I love time travel.
Well, strike that idea, I forgot about the pivotal role the Tunneler plays, and it wasn't created until after Donatello met Kirby. |
Oh yeah its a good time. It's portrayed completely different in different movies. Like back to the future vs. the butterfly effect. two completely different time travel theories
|
Well, it's any interesting theory, a little difficult to get, but then again yes time-travel is very difficult to understand. I still think that the future does have to do with UD's intervention, since the mear fact that time he was in was thirty years later automatically means he's missed them all and couldn't be found while all the others managed to get back.
That Leonardo being blind thing, yeah I thought that wasn't the case, the first time I saw him with the shades the thought occured but I doubted it, the way he moved and looked around definitely didn't fit a blind person's profile. |
I thought Michelangelo mentioned at the begin of the episode Donny disappeared after Ultimate-Drako appeared?
|
He's not specific. he just mentions that Donnie's been missing for 30 years. Heck, if I remember right, Don never mentions Ultimate Drako. But like I said the whole theory is junk because of the role of the Tunneler.
|
I would love a whole entire series based off of this one episode!
It really feels like they teased us and never gave us any more.... |

It's more like... what if the TMNT were all whisked away by Ultimate Drako, and all of them came back except Donatello?
|
Someone gain enough money and persuasion power to make a season, or even series out of this episode. A ton of potential in that universe....Please:D

Where donnie was..
"He's not specific. he just mentions that Donnie's been missing for 30 years."
The following is a TMNT Magazine spoiler (to those who havent read the issue yet). Spoiler:

But the regular demension Don would remember it, right? |
Back to the origional question, I just watched that episode again and I don't see any indication Leo was possibly blind. That had never even crossed my mind before reading this topic. I can kinda see how it might come across that way with those stupid glasses he wears in that one, but anyway. The fact that he didn't know it was Raph until Raph spoke doesn't really say much. I mean, (crossing universes here, so beware) he didn't even know Nightwatcher was Raph until the helmet came off?? Umm, how can you not recognize your own brother's fighting style and size/shape? I mean, CASEY figured it out for cryin' out loud! XD
Ok, sorry. Carry on people. |
At the risk of blatantly offending some of you...that's one way Time Travel works. He was gone because he was traveling through time during that time: what happened very quickly for him (traveling to the future) happened in normal time for everyone else. This is time travel according to H.G. Wells' novel The Time Machine.
Teddy, I disagree with you about the glasses being stupid. Leo in that episode is supposed to be a Guardian--the Guardians are based on Matrix characters, and Leo in that episode is intended to be a less than subtle reference to Neo. Seriously guys, sometimes I think you guys are incapable of thinking deeply or making the connections between TMNT and other things that are culturally relevant. But then, I'm a pretty pretentious b@st@rd... :tlol: |

Anyway I thought the same thing. Donnie was sent to the future when there was no Donnie for 30 years. That in caused no Casey, no Splinter and Hun/Stockman combo pack. Plus how old is Karai, cuz she looked way younger than April in that ep, but then again I guess Losing the people close to you ages you faster. |
I always assumed he was blind. While thinking of the superhero-ish vigilante mantles the Turtles have had (Dark Turtle, Turtle Titan, and Nightwatcher), I could never find one for Leo (plaease correct me if I overlooked one...and no, I don't count that Musketurtles episode). I figured Leo's would be something like this and act as a Daredevil parody. I like the name Sight for his vigilante name.
Back of topic, they don't say if he's blind. Until a fiction makes that clear (which will never happen because it's just a what if story), it's all a personal preference. I prefer him being blind in SaiNW just because it makes him more wore like everyone else (I also like that he lost a sword over the years). |

No offense, of course. ;) |
Oh bah, wasn't this asked somewhere before? Could swear I recall a 'official' response with something along the lines of the script never specifying whether Leo was blind or not. It's totally up to the viewer?
Meh, can't be arsed to go looking for it now. But that's what I recall. Quote:
edit: yea, that.. just saw that post. my bad. xD |
