Tempus Fugit Review!
Well, the CW station I get showed the premiere episode at 6:30am today. They show all of the children's programming many hours earlier (probrably to get the more adult programming going sooner), but I don't care. The premiere episode was super awesome!!! So, if you want to be spoiled now (for those that haven't see it), go ahead and read. But if you don't, stop now.
Synopsis: The episode starts with Viral putting herself back together inside Serling's system. She has a brief flashback to her previous Fast Forward episode where she was defeated. Meanwhile Donatello and Cody have finally got the time window working, and Viral then has an idea. Suddenly we see the Fast Forward theme go by. I guess since this episode starts like an episode of Fast Forward, we have to see the theme. Just as the time window is opening Mikey tries to bring all of his future video games with him. Don stops him for obvious reasons and also tells the team that they should get rid of their future gear. So the Turtles throw to the ground their weapons and most of their future attire. The team does have a special goodbye moment to Cody and then they jump through the window. But just as the last turtle goes, Viral begins controlling Serling and pushes him through the time window and blows up Cody's machine. The last shot we see of Cody is him with a look of doom on his face. Just before the Turtles seemingly make it home, Viral appears (outside of Serling's body now) and sends the team to Dinosaur times. Viral hopes a hungry T-Rex will eat the Turtles. The Turtles trying fighting the dino but without their weapons they're not doing well. Raph of course says "Yeah Don. Don't bring your weapons. Don't want to pollute the time steam." Serling can't fight though because Viral shut down his fighting systems. Suddenly Mikey appears with a new triceratops friend and stops the T-Rex with it. Mikey of course thanks his new pet "Zog the Second". An upset Viral then sends the Turtles to the Dark Ages and has them fighting knights. Don then realizes he needs future technology to get Serling's virus protection systems going and hopes to head back to the future. Mikey who thinks he knows how taunts Viral into sending them into a better, more dangerous fight in the future. So Viral sends the Turtles to "the not so distant future". There the Turtles are caught in a crossfire full of old and new enemies including the Utrom Shredder, Tengu Shredder, and the new Cyber Shredder. As the Shredder's fight, it is quit funny to hear the Utrom Shredder yell "You can't stop me. I am the one true Shredder!" Don complains 21st century technology still isn't good enough but then gets the idea of stealing parts from the Utrom Shredder's exosuit. As they do that, Leo fights a new tough guy who claims to have already defeated them. Don then gets Serling up and running and turns him into Turtle-X. The Turtles blast Viral into a bunch of pieces and go back into the time window to their present. On the way through the time steam, Viral appears again. While weaker, she can still blast some Turtles. Before doing it, Don points out that in the time stream they're just bits of data and will be scattered all across the digital domain if they're blasted. Viral doesn't care of course and sends a blast at the Turtles. Splinter, suddenly in one of his bravest moments ever jumps in front of the blast and then we see him disenagrate. The Turtles seconds later land in their layer but with looks of complete sadness on their faces. They even say "our father is gone". A weakened Viral then goes into the "primitive internet" hoping for a way to power herself up. She finds nothing until she finds an extremely powerful energy source. When she touches it though, suddenly the icon of the Shredder/Foot appears. The power of the program then takes over and slowly replaces her entire mind and body with a whole new one. And then we see the brand new Cyber Shredder appear. But then suddenly we hear words yell "It's Ninja Time!" And suddenly we see the brand new "Back to the Sewers" opening. That's right! At the end, us viewers are treated to the brand new theme song and it is is completely amazing! Review: What an incredible beginning to a season! A perfect transition from Fast Forward. While it was a bit disappointing to see the Fast Forward opening at the start, it paid off by having the new theme in the end. And it was good in the end to know that it is not Viral who will be a main enemy this season. Rather her body and power has simply been used and replaced by the Cyber Shredder program. I'm going to bet that was planted at some point by the Utrom Shredder so it may be a copy of his mind that is within the body. The episode featured a strange send-off for Cody. Leaving him with a look of doom was a strange way to end it but that's the way it goes. The story was also a perfect way to lead the Turtles home. Long ago I had guessed that the Turtles would've simply jumped through the time window and that would've been it. But to make the trip back a difficult one (so difficult that it killed Splinter), made it a worthwhile episode. As for the "not so distant future" they landed in, I'm going bet they landed that it was the season finale for this season or something like that. Perhaps the Turtles in that episode are beaten and have to hide for awhile while the Turtles of this episode show up. But anyway, it was a great episode. And as a final note, there was no promo for the next episode, but the length of this episode was a bit longer than the average Ninja Turtles ep. Future episodes will probrably be the same. The Turtles are Back to the Sewers! |
Not reading that sypnosis til I see the episode for myself.
I will just say that I hope this season is a return to the storytelling that seasons 1-5 provided. Season 6-7 were good, but I miss the style seasons 1-5 provided when it comes to story telling. I just hope it feels like seasons 1-5. Thirty-five minutes of praying this Turtle fan has something to believe in. -X- |
The spoilers are beggining to convince me that the events of "Timing Is Everything" retconned about three seasons

That was just as good as everything else from this entire series, I don't care what anyone else says I'm glad they're keeping things from Fast Forward as part of the story it shows that they feel it wasn't a failure.
I'm glad those of us who realized Cyber Shredder was Viral from the start had been proven correct this morning. I still have to wonder how the Demon Shredder & Utrom Shredder come back. I'm also thinking that Karai will be a good guy and that the Foot Soldiers are fighting of Viral's cyber Foot. I'm really looking forward to this season, as usual Serling made me laugh, he even reminded me of Vernon from the old toon a few times lol. Seriously great stuff, I hope they keep it up with the other 12 episodes and don't slack off after this big bang of a season premier. The eyes are going to take a bit of getting used to but whatever. I really thought it was cool how it started out with the FF intro and ended with the BTTS Into. Playmates are dumber than I thought they where they seriously should have had toys out on the shelves for this show at the time the show hit the air, from what I'm told we may not even get Back To The Sewer toys until 2009, If that's true Epic Fail for Playmates. |
For some ungodly reason I was awake at 9:35, so I managed to to see most of the episode.
Things that were good: While in the Dark Ages, the turtles showed how good of fighters they are and stole weapons. Future-Past where Utrom Shredder vs Demon Shredder vs Cyber Shredder. It will be very interesting to see if this time does come to pass eventually. If it does, why are all three of them still fighting? Unless Cyber Shredder has memory implants that make him think HE'S the real one. Animation style was a lot better than I thought it would be, the turtles are still the turtles. Zog II! Crazy Purple Dragon guy saying he beat the turtles before. Crap, Splinter's gone. This could be very, very interesting. Could have been better: Reveal of Cyber Shredder immediately this episode. When I saw the red-black data center, my first thought went immediately to Bishop which could have been a much more interesting path to take. Just have Viral get trapped, reveal the transformation later. I hope the costumes change because I don't like all of them having blue arm bands. Serling is still around. One of those Shredders should have been Karai. Solid episode, much better than what I had seen of Fast Forward. I'm indifferent to the theme. So where does the three Shredder universe fit in with continuity? It must be before Same as It Never Was, right? |
This episode is all action. Just completely action packed and unlike any of the "new" entries. Still, there are some pretty cool hints to the future development of the plot, so I look forward to seeing more. I missed the first few minutes cause I was in the bathroom. I started from the dino attack.
|
I thought it was boring all the way up until the part featured in the preview, then it got pretty awesome. Definantly alot of unanswered questions, which is good.
Was it just me, or did we all let out a simultaneous "WTF?" when the FF theme song came on? I still don't understand the point of that. |

This was a fun episode, just didn't like the ending. Too short. That, and the Turtles just left the virus infected robot from the future alone! Umm...come on? At least have Donnie try to shut him down or something. Just like Fast Forward, their to fast to end the episode without wrapping up the loose ends. Otherwise though, I liked it. Not the best, but it makes a good story for getting from point A to B. |
You know what sucks? I still have to wait until 12:30PM my time to watch this show. My local CW doesn't start airing cartoons until the afternoon.

Spoiler:
But definitely an epic start to the series... so connected to FF is it: Spoiler:
I gotta say, I'm starting to like the look as it pertains to animation. And it seems like they're doing something they were planning on doing if FF went on to the next season. But I feel a lot better. Mikey's annoyingness came in handy (as it did during the Battle Nexus fight with Raph... as it should be). Man, this looks to be an epic season. |
lol very good point. If I wasn't already up this early, it would be a good thing haha. Maybe next weekend I'll appreciate it more.

the episode was alright. The animation is gonna take some getting used to for me
|
I loved it.
I will say though, Chrell made that piece of tech within the past cyberspace. I GAURENTEE IT!!! I told everyone in my Timing is Everything post that the episode would have something to do with it all. -X- |
But we saw Ch'rell, Saki, and the Cyber Shredder all fighting each other.
|
Let's just hope the series can keep going.
Like I've said, if Simpsons, Power Rangers, Pokemon can stay on the air for so long, Turtles can. This was a very good episode. I won't lie, I hope that there are still some episodes that feel in depth in terms of storytelling, like Touch and Go where Raph sat with an old woman, things like that. This is a good start. Very action packed, I just hope it leans more toward the seasons 1-5 style. -X- |
In the not so distant future, yes.
That wasn't their time. When Viral went into the past internet, she called everything out of date, except for one piece of tech that looked alot like future tech. Like I said at the top of this post, and in my take it all for the shredder post, Shredder would end up with a piece of future tech, go back to his time, and know he got his butt kicked by more powerful Turtles. So how does he defend himself for that? Somehow make himself renewable incase he is ever defeated. Raphael: We put the cabosh on you a long time ago. That's all he needed to know to prepare for the future. -X- |
Pretty friggin' sweet. ^_^ They didn't ever slow down to give the audience a breather. But, I can live with that. We'll probably find out next week how well they do the slower-paced eps.
|
Hm, I missed it. Didn't watch. I'll have to see if I can find it online at some point, I suppose.
I guess I kind of like the idea of using both theme songs as a segue. Though any mention of FF turns me off immediately, so we'll see what I think. I'm cautiously optimistic. I want it to be good again. |
I am pretty happy with it. They eyes are definitely throwing me and I still wish they would have went sans pupils but I will get over it.
Of course Mikey got bonked on the head within the first 3 minutes, that was a bit of an eye roller for me. I liked Splinter's goodbye to Cody, it was very appropriate for things to come. Viral really picked the perfect timing to be all healed and ready to fight again, didn't she? When she started sending them through time I thought Zog 2 was cute but I totally knew as soon as they went to the past Dino land that was going to happen  Honestly I really could have done without them past hopping and been happy with her sending them right to all the chaos and Shredders. That really would have been the most appropriate revenge. She put them almost back in their own time with the toughest villians they ever encountered. I wasn't sure about the appearance of that new red haired villian. It's good they gave us a sneak peek of him but it felt a bit random when he ran in. I really wonder what he meant by "I thought I took care of you already" Darn the suspense. That is the biggest tease of all now we have to piece together how all these things happened. I really liked the set up for things to come. I can't wait until next week! Oh and Blade Raider mentioned seeing a triceraton hover craft in the air? I did spot something in the sky, I DVR'd the show so I am going to try to spot it again |

I'm getting the feeling that I'm going to like this season better than FF. The three Shredders fighting each other was an interesting take to bring the turtles back home. Same goes for the cyber foot fighting normal foot ninja. I'm surprised that the Demon Shredder didn't win the brawl considering he's got magic on his side. I thought making the turtles different heights, was a good thing. Anybody else feel the same way? It's going to take a while for me to get use to the pupils since I've been seeing white slits for so long. Although the 2k3 tmnt tops my list, this is not bad at all. |
What a trimphant return for the turtles, it felt so good seeing new turtles. good episode, I liked the way every thing fell into place. I was put off by how shiney everything looked in the first few minutes of the episode when they where showing Viral flowing around in Serlings circuits, but as the episode went ofr I felt the color scheme got better.
I like how Viral took over the time gate and snatched the turtles from going home right when it was right in front of them. Viral really wanted to make them suffer but I her attempts where a bit weak over-all. I liked seeing the turtles bounced around from time to time. And I think I'm going to like Serling being with the turtles, his interactions with them are pretty good and I don't find him as annoying. I laughed when Don got him up and running again and he said "I thought I was rid of your cretins" or something to that effect. And hey Mikey wasn't completely useless today! He was able to get viral to send them to a time period with the technology so they can battle Viral on her own terms. Good inciative Mikey! ;) and Donatello was just kick ass in this episode, and I loved how he can just take anything dealoing with technology and make it work. My favorite part of the episode was when they where diposited on the street in New York in their own time during the battle of the foot ninjas. Thats when the episode felt like a return to it's orginal roots of pre-fast forward. The urban setting at night, the street and familiar tall buildings with out the glitzy-ness of furture artitech. This is the turtles I've missed! The fighting sequance at this point was the best of the episode too and it was cool seeing that guy with the red hair and beard show up! Can't wait to see more of what he's about because he looks awsome. I always assumed the scattering of Splinter's data was going to be lame but it was handled in a very good and even emotional way, with him noticing Viral about to shoot his sons and him sacrificing himself for them by putting himself in front of the beam. And the turtles reaction to him being "killed", Donatello taking it the hardest because he felt it was his fault. This is the sort of depth I've missed in the series and I hope it continues. The turtles are finnaly back home but they can't even enjoy it because their father was lost to them. :( I felt good seeing them in their old home though, even if Donatello is feeling anguished. Viral creeping out of Serling and into Donatello's computer system was cool with her searching the internet for a way to repair her self. But it was such sweet moment when she was "captured" by Shredder's data code and turned into the new Shredder. She as Shredder looked so bad ass! As far as the turtles looks are concerned, I still think they look the same as they did in FF but with a "softer" more innocent look. Especially Donatello and Michelangelo, I thought they looked the most diffrent for some reason, particulaly in the face, their eyes seemed brighter. It's going to get some getting used too, I was thrilled to see that their facial reactions wheren't as exaggerated and cartoony as I feared it would be. It's gonna take some getting used to with to their faces and pupils, some close up shots in particular bugged me out. All in all I'm psyched for this new season, so far it's looking like a good mixture of FF and classic 2k3 with the return of seriousness and the "urban" and old faces yet to come, and FF elemants thrown in there. I liked this epside and I can't wait to see the next one. It has alot of promice. 8) |

This episode may have been a complete action-fest, but honestly, it was one of the best I've seen in a while.
There was a rather grim good-bye to Cody, unmarred by any Mikey jokes or anything. The episode also showcased what a terrifying villain Viral would be to have in the past (or future). I've always liked her, and thought she was under utilized. It was probably a lucky break that she's been overwritten by Cyber Shredder. Zog II was a nice homage, the hints at future conflict with the Shredders was interesting, too. To top it all off, the episode had an incredibly dire ending, with Splinter presumed dead, Serling stuck in the past, and a new villain afoot. And, unlike some almost grim episodes of Fast Foward, it wasn't ruined by a lame Mikey one-liner at the end. In fact, the episode showcased some of the better writing Mikey's seen lately. He was on the ball, and his antics were actually amusing, especially his twig attack against the dinosaur. Animation quality seemed to be on par with an average episode of Fast Foward, so that aleviates one fear. As for Cyber Shredder: all the people who predicted it was Viral, or at least a bit of her programming, (myself included) were right. All the people who predicted it was Ch'rell were also right, to a lesser extent. Quote:

I loved it, man. I thought the fight scenes were cool, especially Don with the mace or flail or whatever. I get the feeling that they're gonna go back to that Shredder war scene again in another episode. 3 Shredders is kinda overkill, but hey, they might be able to do it well. I liked the new villain, too, the one that claimed to have killed the turtles. He's kinda like the opposite of Bishop, where one is all science, and I'm guessing he's magic cuz of that staff thingie had. That's my guess, anyway.

You know now that I think about it the turtles being sent to the dark ages would have been cooler if they where actually mistaken for being demons instead of "green knights", considering how superstious people where back then. Quote:

So the awnser to the qestion "Who is Cyber Shredder is?" is Cyber Shredder its not Viral or Utrom Shredder its a brand new Shredder for a brand new season. |

I think Karai is going to help the TMNT this season. |
Boy am I ever glad to be in the US when this aired. I would have hate to have missed this and be reduced to just read about it online or whatever. We actually had 2 4kids channels here, and the other channel was rerunning FF again with no mention of Back to the Sewers at all. So when they flashed the FF theme song on this show I was confused all to hell too. I was like 'this can't be... I could sworn I saw them with pupils before the theme song started.' But yeah, big surprise.
The episode was awesome and I'm glad I saw that final ep with Viral and Sh'Okanabo in FF to understand Viral's return. I liked how Mikey was useful throughout the entire episode, even to get them back home in a way. I also liked seeing the turtles kick some ass without weapons and even using other weapons. The scene of Don kickin' ass on those knights in hand-to-hand combat (while monologuing no less) was awesome. Then the wole scene with the 3 Shredders.. whoa. And the new bad guy also taking on the turtles without weapons and kicking their shells. Plus the hint to already knowing them and saying he thought to having taken care of them before. Then when Don mentioned that the regular Shredder was using an exosuit made of Ultrom technology, I as like 'OH that's right!!!' That was real clever how they used that fact to repair Serling. Splinter's sacrifice was noble and heartfelt. Especially with Don blaming himself. It gave them a bittersweet return. It was cool seeing the Turtles return home, though without Splinter. Seeing Viral turn into Cyber Shredder was awesome... and then the new theme song!! WHOAAA!! That just blew me away. That was totally awesome way to end this ep and start the new show. And yes, my wife and I voted for that theme. I just feel a bit disappointed cause we didn't see April and Casey yet and I'll miss the next ep cause I'll be back home in Mexico by then, but oh well. I'll read about it then. |
Well this was pretty good not the best I dont think its going to top Season 1-4 but this seems to be a step up from Lost Season and Fast Forward and a step in the right direction for the future of the franchise.
What I liked 1) The Fast Foward intro at the start and Back to the Sewer at the end. It was a nice transitinal effect kinda like making the episode a season finale and a season start. 2) The speech to Cody I wont lie I didn't like him all that much but I still think he deserved a nice send off though. Although I'm sure we will see him again he clearly wont be one of the main supporting cast anymore. 3) Mikey was actaully pretty funny for once since Fast Forward I never thought they wrote him all that well. He even proved to be useful in tricking Viral to go to a time they could fix Serling. Now this is the Mikey I was missing. 4) Don kicking ass the medevil scene was pretty lame tell Don got the mace and started going to work on those knights pretty awesome. That and the fact that it seems Mike and Don and Splinter seem to steal the show for once from Leo and Raph. 5) ZOG the second I got a good chuckle out of that. 6) The three Shredders and the foot war I guess we got a sneak peek at maybe the season finale. 7) Cyber Shredders birth was cool to see. Hopefully he proves to be worthy of the Shredder title. Not really happy with 1) The animation its not bad but its not what I really wanted probraly would be so miffed at it if Chaotic hadn't got the better animation. Its going to have to take some time to get used to it. 2) Like I said in the likes part not a fan of the Dark Ages stuff it just seems lame. I mean Viral just throws some random Knights at them WTF. Wasn't cool tell Don got tha tmace then the action really picked up. 3) Splinter's sacrafice and aftermath it felt rushed and not emotional enough. I just felt there should have been more to it. 4) Serling is back with them I'll give him anther shot but I still dont really like this character to me he's just poor man's Fugitoid. 5) Not a fan of those extreme sports gear turtle outfits I saw in the opening I hope playmates isn't going to try and put in every Turtle variant. I dont not want to see musical hip hop bling Trutles in this show. Cant wait for next week wished they showed a episode preview at least if they did I didn't see it. |
Ok, so how does Viral exist in prehistory, with no tech, save Serling, to keep her program running?
Oh....she's still in the time portal...never mind. So Splinter... Spoiler:

For a “New Series”, this episode sure had its share of continuity nods; TMNT season premieres are usually hit-the-ground-running affairs, and I was glad to see the trend continue here—overall, it was miles better than Future Shell-Shock.
Random preliminary thoughts: It was interesting to see this episode include some footage from Day of Awakening, pupil-less eyes and all. Given that, having Fast Forward’s opening, and including footage from the first season in the BttS one, it’s clear the creators are a) trying to save money when they can, and b) make clear that this is a continuation and not a reinvention. Which is good. Okay, the three Shredders bit seemed like a nice continuity nod when I thought that it was an alternate future created by Viral. But now that it’s revealed that it’s the actual future, it suddenly became a hell of a lot more interesting. How did the Shredders return? Where are the turtles, and what role did April’s landlord play? Where is Karai? I have to say, as fond as I am not of the idea of seeing either of the established Shredder’s returned, I am very intrigued to see where this is going. Kudos, creators. A quick look-see at the credits yielded some interesting info. One, that Sean Schemmel voices both Master Khan (almost certainly the new guy we saw this episode) and some other new cat named “Wendell”. The characters credited as “starring” are the turtles, Splinter (!); Casey and April, Serling, Stockman, Hun, Cyber Shredder, and the aforementioned Master Khan and Wendell. Karai was once again left out. Greg Carey was once again credited as Hun, which I think must be some kind of mistake, since David Zen Mansley (Bishop) was supposed to be taking over the role. Interestingly enough, Mansley himself was not on the credits, which strikes me as weird, given that he plays a considerable amount of characters and that an appearance by Bishop was a given. One has to wonder: is Serling mentioned at all in April and Casey’s journal? If he is, then Cody has nothing to worry about from the explosion, since he already knows that the turtles will be fine. If it doesn’t, then leaving the kid the way they did is a bit mean of the writers. It’s also a nice bit of parallelism, with both Cody and the turtles believing they’ve lost their respective fathers. I have mixed thoughts about the new look. The pupils I still need to get useful. The backgrounds are a considerable improvement over Fast Forward’s. The character designs are for the most part awesome. April’s landlord looks great, as do the scenes in the intro with actual motion. It’s awesome to finally see the camera do something other than stand around and zoom, even if it was only in the intro. All in all, the jury is still out on whether the change is good or bad. I really liked seeing Mikey be the one to come up with the plans in this episode. It’s a nice detail from previous seasons that was mostly forgotten in Fast Forward. So yeah. I’m glad the turtles are back. Quote:
Seriously though, I really doubt your scenario is the case. Not only would it require an almost impossible and uncontrollable set of circunstances to occur, the Shredder was never the type of guy to plan for that type of failure. He would never think of the sort of plan you suggest, because there would be no reason to think that he'd need that sort of plan. |
