Official Episode Discussion: "Identity Crisis"

Official Ep Discussion: "Identity Crisis"

Cyber Shredder uses a computer virus to wipe the Turtles' memories out and make them work for The Foot; April, Casey, and Serling work to save the Turtles.

Greetings folks!

Okay, I've been looking at this episode description, not to mention the video sneak peek they gave us. So KHAAAAN gets bitched out by Shredder for their failure to get him out of the Cyberworld. KHAAAAN explains that the turtles have caused most of the setbacks, and Shredder explains that he has a plan to get the turtles once and for all...

Meahwhile, at the sewers, April is gushing over Don's technological advancements. Raph's not as happy about it - digitizing back and forth HAS to affect you somehow.. (Dare I mention the mutation mess in the Red Sky eps of the Old toon?)

Our Beloved robotic Butler is becoming not much more than a Rodney Dangerfield character. A quick laugh or groan at most.

The boys are working Together on finding Splinter's remnants ('bout time, I say), and come upon a veritable Mount Everest of Garbage Data. So the turtles begin spelunking the mountain with April watching from reality. Don manages to reach a small cluster of data bits and download them, when something comes up on their radar - a massive power surge, aka Shredder's Amnesia virus.

Okay... so judging from all of this, the boys are going to lose their memories, and eventually get turned into little foot soldering Zombies for KHAAAAN. It'll be up to April, Serling and Casey to figure out how to get the boys back to normal. Figuring the virus got them in the cyber realm, they'd have to get them there again. They basically need to send the boys through a giant Anti-virus program to get cleaned out.

Something to consider while watching this is the idea of there now being Two Shredders in this realm of reality. If Cyber Shredder and Ch'rell were to meet, or find out about each other, would they join forces, or pull a 'there can be only one!' type battle? We've seen a reality where the boys had to fight THREE shredders... could it have been a foreshadowing of things to come? Or was it just a coincidence?

Now, figuring it's a one episode deal with no consequences, the crew will manage to get them back to normal without any issues, and they'll be able to fight Shredder and resume gathering Splinter's bits. Right? Or could this memory loss have more of an affect on their minds? Raphael makes a comment in the preview about how the repeated back and forth
digitizing MUST screw with them somehow... COULD there be something semi-permanent that affects them? Maybe while under Shredder/KHAN's control, they give out valuable information about their location, or the predicament with Splinter? Or will they manage to get through this unscathed?

Time will tell. Once again, I will leave you with some questions to ponder...

WILL THE TURTLES GET THEIR MEMORIES BACK?

WILL AN OVERZEALOUS CASEY JONES' ACCIDENTALLY CAUSE SERLING TO GO TURTLE-X OUT OF NOWHERE?

COULD THIS EXPERIENCE PUT THE TURTLES INTO A DEADLY SITUATION REGARDING THEIR LOCATION/MISSION/ETC. ?

And even though the Pharaoh cries for his Mummy whenever I say it...(Hey, It's Halloween!)

STAY TUNED!!!

((Thanks to Jester for some ideas to make this teaser a lil better...))

We are open, and poll coming shortly! :D

VaughnMichael 11-01-2008 09:39 AM

Nice seeing Klunk, so far this episode isn't doing much for me, but that could be because it comes after a great show like Spider-Man.
Allot of these Back To The Sewer episodes remind me of plots that would have been in the old toon but without the charm and humor the old show had going for it.
I like how the turtles look in the Foot gear and how they showed no mercy kicking the crap out of the Purple Dragons and they showed Leo using his Katana on Casey almost hitting him something we hardly ever saw before.
I also really dig Casey's outfit, the Skullcap is a nice touch.
And man Serling is the great , best line in this episode had to be "I am not giving you a kiss!" haha
I don't know about anyone else but man the Turtles working for the foot are brutal, sort of wish they where the bad guys lol. Once again can't believe they (Don) hit a female purple dragon!
I really like how April looks ridding in Serling/Turtle-X
I loved those flash back images, someone totally has to screen cap those! Serling in a dress! & Renet finally!
At the end I thought the episode was ok, it comes off as a bit crammed though, I think they could have went on a bit longer with this.
NEXT WEEK MUTANTS! I'm so looking forward to that, shame it appears to be more of this series generic mutant types.

Kunoichi_Haruko 11-01-2008 09:43 AM

I did like this episode. I burst out laughing at the flashbacks. Actually Vaughn pointed out most of what I liked in the episode, so there's no point in repeating it.

Scandia 11-01-2008 10:04 AM

I absolutely loved the flashbacks to pieces. Very accurate for each Turtle. Very individualized.

It was also nifty to not show the pupils when they were possessed, yet returning them when they came back to normal.

CyberCubed 11-01-2008 10:22 AM

This was a great episode. I thought this was going to be another "Cyberworld" ep because of the beginning but it was only for the first 5 minutes, and then we were back in New York.

April, Casey and Serling make quite a team. The flashbacks were hilarious, my favorite part of the episode.

The Turtles attacking the Purple dragons were great, as was Leo swinging his swords at Casey's head. :o

One of the best episodes of the season so far.

Zachatello00 11-01-2008 10:25 AM

Did I see a Nintendo Wii in Mikey's Flashback?

Aneras713 11-01-2008 10:45 AM

I liked the flashbacks, and I agree, "I am not giving you a kiss,"

My sister personally thought the turtles looked kind of scary when they were possesed(For once we agree on something!:o, Somewhere a herd of pigs are taking flight).

I thought Raph would snap out of it if Leo started fighting him, shame it didn't happen, but he did fight Leo in a flashback.

Raph shoveing Mikey's face into the cake:lol:.

maryshine 11-01-2008 10:51 AM

Where shall I begin?

It is great to have Casey and April working as team without the guys for a change (though once is enough). You got the best of both worlds: Casey is the strong guy, where as April is the smart one.

Also, finally great to see the cat again. Now can we please see Karai?

I'm glad that Raph wasn't cured right away. Good way to continue the plot.
My faviorit part was seeing the fash backs. We saw some characters that we haven't seen in four years, like the ancient one.

As for next week, didn't they always do this plot? Mutants attack sounds like sometime from season four when Bishop's experiment went horribly wrong.

Scandia 11-01-2008 10:54 AM

Somebody PLEASE upload this episode to Youtube soon! I want to watch the flashbacks over and over again.

Maybe it is Bishop's experiment gone horribly wrong. Hey, it'd give us a chance to see Bishop's new look.

Sage Ninja 11-01-2008 10:55 AM

I enjoyed this episode I seriously loved seeing the turtles all working together in cyberspace with April at the helm montering everything in the lair. I think it was a nice little tidbit that when the turtles came torn back to reality that they had pupiless eyes.

I got chills when the turtles came to Kahn's hide out and they nelt before him all respectfully when he greeted them as "foot ninja". :o Seeing the turtles as bad guys was pretty damn cool and you have to admit as bad guys they really send off the vibe of assasins. They work as one, they're quite and precise, and they are brutal. If the turtles became evil for real they would be scarey becuase it seemed like they would give no mercy. Kind of scarey to see what the turtles are capable of with their combat skills. Imagine if Splinter had been bad and brought them up that way? It's kinda freaky how lethal they are with out their personlites present to soften their ninja personas.

My only real complaint is that I wish the turtles being controlled and acting as foot memebers had been an actual story arc rather just a single episode. I think alot of potenticial of the turtles working as foot ninja could have had lots of potencial. Kahn could have had the turtles do any number of horriable things while working as foot ninja. Like having them kill innocent people or attack their friends or do unspeakable things to the city? And I thought I was going to get that when Raphael didn't come out of it right away like the others. Actually I thought it was good attention to character dynamics that the squishy memeories the turtles where having didn't affect Raph. Raphael has always been more gruff and hard edged than the others, and he probably doesn't get suckered into things like that. Not that he doesn't care for them but Raph's a tough guy so it would take more than that to affect him. I don't know what it says about Raph that all the memeories about kicking ass and Splinter not affecting him means. But it was memeory he had of picking on Mikey that snapped him out of it. hmm :ohwell: But eighther way it was a memeory with Mikey that ultimately did the trick.

Some of my favorite scenes in this episode was the whole sequence of the turtles running across the roof tops to Kahn's place. Those where nice, I love seeing the turtlesdo that and since thids season started we've been treated to those types of scenes quite a bit. :D Also loved the scenes where Casey was getting attacked by the turtles. It was well played out and I enjoyed seeing Casey almost get nailed half a dozen times, he was litterly running for his life when he escaped from them, particually the scene where Casey makes it to his bike and and narrowly avoids getting scalped by leo when he swipped at him. They wheren't messing around and they it sort of shocked me that they all used their weapons on him. The bomb thing also suprised me because I keopt thinkng, hey aren't there some helpless nocked out purple dragon memebers still inside the building? The way the building went up there was no way of those PD's the turtles beat up survived.

Aneras713 11-01-2008 10:56 AM

The turtles had pupils, they were just really really tiny.

Scandia 11-01-2008 10:58 AM

I honestly do not think it would have worked out as an entire story arc. Perhaps a two-part episode...at the very most. I honestly do not know how they managed to make it last nearly a whole episode. Or how it managed to work with all 4 Turtles.

I do love the way they snapped the Turtles out of this. Screencaps, please!

Cipher 11-01-2008 11:12 AM

This episode didn't impress me all that much. It was, I don't know, too "wacky" with all the memory beam devices and whatnot, which as Vaughn said much earlier, felt like the old toon minus its charms.

On the other hand, the action was good, that series of painting-style flashbacks was cool, and there were humorous bits like Serling's "I'm not giving you a kiss."

Oh, and did anyone else catch the Dark Turtles theme music? Nice touch.

Next week: Mutants! Yes! Sure, they're not a wacky cast of anthropomorphic animals, but whatever.

Shred Head 11-01-2008 11:21 AM

Really great episode I am loving Master Khan I hope they go alittle indepth with his story. I mean he's foot but we never saw him before so it makes me wonder whats his deal and how he got to be in the bigger picture. Boy those Foot Turtles are cool looking. I sure they would really make badass toys I hope they oh yeah I forgot there are no Back to the Sewar toys. The flashback where cool I hope someone screencaps them.

Although I do wish they handled Raph's better. I mean they had the whole his worst fear giving into his rage and anger and becoming Shredder and they didn't work that one in. Also rather have had a good heart father son moment animated then silly slapstick. Really outside of that I think that was the only thing not handled well.

Sage Ninja 11-01-2008 11:27 AM

ah now there is numerous ways that could have lasted for a entire story arc of say, three episodes. It could have served to bring the rest of the players out into the open, like Karai if she found out the turtles where acting as foot ninja and wrecking things, it could serve to give us more of Serling Casey+April team up to work against the turtles. They could get ahold of Usagi and have him fight with them so they could another warrior fight the turtles that equal to them in skill. just to point out a few things.

gobo 11-01-2008 11:30 AM

Excellent episode, but I don't have the time to go into detail.

Yeah, a two parter would have been nice. The turtles being brainwashed by evil remimeds me of the dark turtules.

Cure 11-01-2008 12:10 PM

This is what, the third mind control episode this season? First Casey, then April, now the turtles. Oh, well, it was fun. And what was up with Raph's pirate memory? I lol'd.

Cure 11-01-2008 12:12 PM

What the hell? Where did my post go?! Shenanigans!

EDIT: Woops, never mind.

Jester 11-01-2008 12:35 PM

Here again: Jester's Running Commentary, spoiler tagged for your safety!
Spoiler:
My tape (yes I use my old VCR...so...stop looking at me like that) is a bit fried, so I'm watching from the after the 1st break...which is ok because the 1st act was online....:P
So it's not an amnesia virus, but rather a reprogramming. I get it now.
KHANNNNNN!!! Sorry, had to do it! :D
Yea, for April/Casey/Serling teaming to find the guys.
Man, Ch'iral is a total dick! Making the Turtles his slaves rather than killing them, man.
Slash!? :D
Uh...no Casey, not normal...RUN!!
Casey vs. The Guys...bye Case.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Zombies!!
The Foot uniforms didn't clue Casey into a little of the "Why?" the Turtles...shellacked (Tehe...puns)... him.
Ahhh...Casey/April mushiness. And I don't blame you Serling. :P
Nothing will stop the Foot's rise to power but Casey and April...IN TURTLE X!!! SWEET!
Did Casey just scre4am KHANNN!? :P
Love those flash backs....not what I expected, but cool...liked the art style.
Where's Raph?
Uh, oh...is Raphie to broody that he's not gonna snap out of it?
Yea! For mega-team ups. Max power....you'll fry his brain...or make him OT Raph. :P
Turtle Time Bomb...run!!
If Khan is a Elite, how did he get so good that the Turtles, combined would be no match for him.
Why not just find the Turtles, then he could attack them at home, why build his own?

Next Weeks Preview: Meh...that's it...just Meh...what about Splinter?

Raph's Girl 11-01-2008 01:01 PM

Good ep... Awesome to see Klunk again even if it was for like a second (and then he dissapeared). The turtles in their foot gear kinda reminded me of that nightmare Leatherhead had once.

Don's memories: Fighting Hun, Fighting some weird creature with Cody, Fighting foot, Hanging out with Leatherhead, being confused while reading, inventing stuff with April, Saving his brothers in the turtle copter, Chibi Don cuddling up with a book on physics while Splinter reads a book on Ju-Jitsu

Leo's Memories: Getting his first wooden sword, training with Ancient One, fighting against...something, Ninja Tribunal training, fighting Shredder, Saving renet from a Saber Toothed Tiger (when the frak did that happen??), Fighting Khan, having tea with Splinter.

Mikey's Memories: Running on the rootf tops with his brothers, Er....Serling dressed as a woman er.. I soo didn't need to see that, Turtle Titan fighting with the Justice Force (I see Silver Sentry, Crysalis, and possably Nano), being apperantly scared out of his whits by some Dracula movie, Winning in the Battle Nexus, Skateboarding with his brothers, beating Casey at a game, Awww piggy back ride on Splinter.

Raph's Memories: Practicing, defeating a whole slew of foot *lol*, fighting Leo?, riding his bike (of course), Umm...being a pirate? Er what?!, playing with an R.C car as a kid...too adorable, defeating Triple Threat, A birthday party for Mike (hmm 8 candles on that cake).

So we learned from their memories that they do have birthdays.

Now for a couple questions:
1: When did they become pirates??
2: When did they go to the ice ages? Cuz Leo certainly couldn't have saved Renet from a saber toothed tiger in the Cretaceous. :P
3: Do we want to know why Serling was dressed as a woman?

Im in the process of capping the memories.

Machias Banshee 11-01-2008 01:08 PM

I was definitely surprised at how good this ep was. Great action, I loved the flashbacks...

My only question is Why Raphael was the only one who Didn't have a memory of being with Splinter. Like Casey said, he's not the sentimental type... but is he Really that distant from Splinter, that he didn't have any special one-on-one memories? That just struck me as odd...

But other than that, I enjoyed it. the turtles as foot assassins was VERY cool. Don really laid into that female PD more than I'd seen in previous episodes.

and Raph's Girl, PLEASE do share the memory screencaps with us. The artwork was so interesting...

Turtleman100 11-01-2008 01:22 PM

I like this episode alot. It really cool.

rayfillet101 11-01-2008 01:24 PM

I got really excited when they lost their pupils, and later when they became red with black bandanas I was blown away. wicked cool!

cowabunga14 11-01-2008 01:29 PM

This episode was mostly alright. Nothing really stuck out to me except for the Turtles getting involved with the Foot and the flashbacks were kinda nice.

There was some humor here and there, but not as much as I would've liked. I guess there was more of a focus on the action this time seeing as there were mostly serious aspects.

Overall, not the best and not the worst, but it could've been better. Next week's does look kind of exciting.

I posted all the memories on the screen cap thread. :)

Jelly Bean 11-01-2008 01:41 PM

ok why would a flash back of slamming Mikey's face into his birthday cake snap Raph out of being mind controlled? I don't get how that in particular would jog his memory out of everything that flashed through his mind. Does he live to pester Mikey or something?

I loved seeing Donatello beating the female gang memeber up. For some reason I thought it was fitting that he would do that.

Jelly Bean 11-01-2008 01:42 PM

urgh, you couldn't have just posted them here!? It takes for ever for my computer to download all the images in that thread. >.<

Time Mistress 11-01-2008 01:44 PM

Nice ep. Interesting but it made sense that it was a memory of Mike rather than Splinter than snapped Raph out if it. It just reinforces for me that those two are the closest of the Turtles. As for it being Raph playing a joke on Mike, I think laughter is something that Raph holds very precious in his memories given his rather angsty and angry outlook on life, and Mike is the brother that makes him laugh the most. The fact that Mike is the butt of the joke in this case, well, makes it funnier from Raph's pov. It wouldn't be as funny if Mike were pulling a joke on him now would it? But Raph knows Mike's a good sport about such things which is why they can get away with teasing each other in the first place. Though why is it only Mike's birthday? I thought they were all the same age?

Where was Klunk? Must go back and watch, I missed the kitty!

Anyone find it interesting/cool that April got to use Turtle X before Casey did? Go April!

Scandia 11-01-2008 01:44 PM

Raph did have a Splinter memory during Mikey's birthday. All four did. Leo did have two- but that is understandable.

Here's my two cents from the episode, originally posted to go with the review on ICS.net.

Wow, mind control! I'd never have thought I'd see the day where the TMNT do a mindcontrol episode. And it's only the third, maybe fourth one this season.

- April mindcontrolled by Ring
- Casey mindcontrolled by Foot
- TMNT mindcontrolled by Foot
(- Viral mindcontrolled by Shredder)

You've gotta hand it to them: The writing is more creative than ever. Next week: Mutants. Who'd have thought that? And maybe Splinter will come back mindcontrolled, too. That would be awesome and a nice change to the usual mindcontrol-thing. Or how about Serling mindcontrolled? Amazing idea, innit?

Also, Cyber-Everything is going on my nerves.

silverdragon 11-01-2008 02:06 PM

okay...not yet seen the episode but I just saw the screencaps, and I have to ask...the sabre tooth? okay, I guess I can live with that. But I'm pretty sure they never became pirates...was he remebering a dream? a story? anyone have any clue?

Aska_Badoura 11-01-2008 02:18 PM

Calling your charge's great-grandfather a hooligan. Nice.

I will attempt to not whine about Karai. I mean... not even the flashbacks? :ohwell:

But yes, lovely flashback paintings. Khary Randolph, I believe - he's been doing promo artwork since the first season. Between this and the intro stills, it's nice to see his stuff actually appear in an episode. :)

The roof hopping: They're not being very good ninja if Casey can follow them from the street... :P

Mikey is Raph's best friend. Even more so than Casey or Splinter. There's just a huge brotherly bond between them that I guess we'll never know just how deep it goes.

I guess we can assume that some of these memories take place in the brief spans of time we didn't see between "Ninja Tribunal" and "Fast Foward" (Mikey's Turtle Titan adventure, the pirate thing, Renet and the tiger), and the gap between "Fast Foward" and "Back to the Sewer" (Don fighting the monster with Cody, Serling in a dress), since Cody looks older in those.
