Abandoning the Turtles
 

We all know 4Kids seems to think Chaotic has more staying power than the turtles, not to mention the fact that it's a brand they actually own. Well, what about Playmates?

It's well known that Turtles was their biggest brand, yet they basically ignored it after the movie. Seems they are working on something of their own, only I don't know about their ownership of the property.

Check out 4Kids.com and try to watch 'Worlds Collide, Part 1'. If it's like my setup, you should see a 2 minute long add for a new toy property supported by an animated 3D show...

Guess we know why they stopped focusing on turtles.

The blame all goes to Playmates for not supporting the show by funding 1/3rd of it. They think their toys can sell without animation.

Likewise 4kids was hit hard by the economy and they can't afford to keep spending money on animation themselves without support from Mirage and Playmates.

TMNT probably won't get another cartoon until another 5-6 years from now when they try to re-launch the property yet again. God knows how old we'll all be by then.

But to be honest the 2k3 series was running on its last legs for a while (IMnsHO)... Though FF had a couple of good eps. I felt that the show was nearing its end right there...
BTTS was not as good as FF... and I'm not a FF fan (I disliked the Tron/Matrix thing that was most of BTTS...)

This was priceless.

Does Playmates even have anything else going for it?

Playmates is making toys based on the new Star Trek movie, so that will sustain them for a while.

TMNT is being put to sleep.

Thanks a lot, 4kids, Playmates, and Gary Richardson. Not a damn one of them is trying to help the property. Looks like TMNT will be going back to a comic-only franchise for awhile, and even that may go into hibernation for awhile.

Well I didn't make the thread itself. It's just a shame that everytime I get back into TMNT again, its always in the "dying" phase.

I know every franchise goes through this cycle, but 2003 was only 6 years ago.

That would be the best thing that could possibly happen to the property. At least until the public psyche has a chance to wash its collective palate of the toddler-pandering stuff.

But yes, there's that. Even the comics are going away, it sounds like.

Power Rangers snuffed it out before and this time it was some 3-D show or some crap about a card game. I mean what's new? I'm not sad to see it go and like Andrew said it's the best thing that could happen to it right now.

I guess things could be a lot better, but they could probably also be a lot worse. Plus dwelling on the negative aspects isn't going to do anything. That's my take on it.

I'm disappointed that the attention the Turtles have been getting is fading again, but I figure the fans might as well enjoy what's out there. Too bad the Turtles just can't seem to get cemented the same way the Marvel and DC characters have been as far as popularity goes.

If it ever will re-appear. In the 1990's, popular culture had 1970's nostalgia (ABBA revival/A Teens, disco revival), in the 2000's we had 1980's nostalgia (TMNT, Transformers, He-Man). Around 2010, 1990's a retro movement nostalgia will probably begin (Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Tamagotchi, Pokemon/Digimon, and Power Rangers which is still on air). TMNT was popular in the early 1990's, but counted as 1980's.

Pokemon and Power Rangers are all still around and doing...okay. Digimon and Tamagotchi comes and goes, but both never vanished for long. These are like Transformers and have never really stopped, but will probably join the nostalgia fest when it comes.

I think 90's nostalgia has already started a bit with Biker Mice's new series and Reboot getting movies in the future (as well as a comic I can't read...damn website <_<), but I think it will really start when shows like Animaniacs, Tiny Toon, Gargoyles, Swat Kats, Exo-Squad, Pirates of Dark Water, etc. get remade (or new additions).

I hope next time a TMNT cartoon comes around, they do something that takes the best of all the different TMNT universes. If they do the comic stoies again, it'll be quite boring.


PS the Spice Girls and Britney Spears can just burn in hell for all I care.

Haven't watched the Pokemon show in years (although I presume it's doing fairly well), but the Pokemon video-games continue to make top-sellers lists and get glowing reviews. Platinum version launched last month to huge numbers. Many Gamestops opened early just to handle the pre-orders.

Pokemon really doesn't deserve to be labeled a '90s fad. It's fairly well established as a classic and evergreen video game series.

Likewise, Transformers has never really gone away. It's just that sometimes it was limited to toylines, or comics, or Japan, or was called Beast Wars/Beast Machines. It has a ridiculous amount of staying power and a huge cult following. Again, it's kind of moved out of just being an '80s thing.

Yes, these are properties I enjoy besides Turtles.

The Pokemon anime is about to hit its 600th total episode in Japan, and the 12th movie is coming out this summer.

It's still doing fairly well for itself, despite the fact that the fad is long over.

Seriously, though, let's please not exaggerate and complain about the number of negative posts around here, since two wrongs don't make a right. If you look around, you'll see that there are actually far more positive posts than you're giving the forums credit for. Why not focus on reading and replying to those instead? Or, better yet, come up with a new, interesting topic for people to discuss?

Things might look bad for the TMNT right now, but we gotta at least keep a more positie outlook... IT's hard but we can't be in a doom and gloom mode all the time... cling to the good memories and share the love for the tmnt... Regarding the toon maybe it was time for it to take a breather...

Its an up and down process that most cartoon properties seem to go through. I know MOTU is the same way, but hey its something to look forward to in the future. If an animated show goes on too long it becomes stale anyway, and eventually loses interest from most. I am grateful for the the 2k3 series and movie, I was not expecting such a resurgence in popularity for the turtles but im glad it happened.

I wonder how The Simpsons has gone on for so long then.

Simpsons will go on until Fox can no longer afford to pay the VA salaries.

As for TMNT, it's sad to see it dying for a second time. Everytime a "era of TMNT" ends I get really sad, but I know its inevitable.

Who knows, maybe by some miracle G.I. Joe Resolute will not only please aging fanboys but will also make fat money, encouraging the powers that be to produce a similarly edgy and badass take on the Turtles...

I guess the marketing industry isn't as persuasive as it once was. Competition gets fiercer one commercial at a time...*sigh.* A miracle just has to happen I guess!

Thats a pretty strong statement for people you don't even personally know. How about some respect towards another human?

I never take things like that personal. It's easy to understand that this person dislike the songs (me too, even if I dont use those words, and some Melanie Chisholm solo ballads are good).
