So whose in the mood for a NICE debate?
I was watching a program about Dinosaurs on Discovery and the debate about them being warm or cold blooded came up. So these sciencey people, whith a lack of dinosaurs to catch, went out and caught a logger head turtle. The checked its metabolic rate and found that it was on the border line between warm and cold blooied. Your thoughts? |
Hmmm....I thought all reptiles were cold-blooded? There are probably a few exceptions.
|
Are you asking if we think Dinosaurs were cold or warm blooded, or the Turtles? I will assume the Turtles since we're in that forum.
I always thought they were on the border between warm and cold blooded. Obviously their body temperature is not totally dependent on their environment, but not totally stable either. Definitely lower than average human temperature. |
I've gotta agree. I've always figured that body temperature was one of the aspects that were affected by the mutation, making them warm-blooded, but not fully. Kind of like how their appearance changed, but they have both human and turtle characteristics in their looks.
|
The guys are probly something like "lukewarm"-blooded. I know that i can feel sluggish in heat and feisty in cold, and sometimes its the other way around...
They can probly stand extreme temperatures to a certain point, and then it would start to affect them. |
*pops on a school PC... and temporarily ignores her Illustrator map*
Ooo...ooo..!! Good debate question! On the average, I also considered most reptiles as being 'cold-blooded'... generally not being able to maintan thier own body temperature. Of course, I imagine a Ninja Turtle is also lukewarm-blooded after the mutation. I've also seen a few shows on PBS about reptiles and dinos... as well as read what Crichton concluded in the Jurassic Park book. In summary: size makes a difference! I remeber it being stated that for a big dino to be able to maintain his temperature, he would have to be warmblooded to a certain degree. And so they compared many of the dinos to that of birds. One thing there, is that many birds have a very high metabolism... while the dinos would have to had lower metaobolism so they didn't burn up all their energy needed to move their big bodies around. _________________ "I have a headache this big, and it has Donatello written all over it!" [ This Message was edited by: HorseTechie on 2002-03-18 18:07 ] |

Ooo.. the Machias Theory!
I bet you've been through these pages too, eh? http://dsc.discovery.com/guides/dinosaur/dinosaur.html |
Hey! I own a video set of Walking With Dinosaurs too! After I saw it on the Discovery Channel, I just had to buy it
|
Yup! Whenever im not checking out our ninja reptiles, im looking at my relative reptiles! i used to wanna become a paleoentologist, but after my change, i'd probly BE the thing theyre looking at!
I look at All sorts of stuff on theropods, especially the meateaters! One (or two) books i really like are called dinotopia. The art is incredible, and i LOVE Stinktooth the Giganotosaurus! Reptile fetish? NAH......! *hides from off-topic Allosaurs* |
mmm-hmmm... now I see why she wanted to prove if they are warm or cold blooded.
|
Off topic allosaurs?? Where? Where?
*looks around nervously* |
*chases HT to bap her*
Actually, i have a newspaper article about someone discovering a dinosaur heart and finding that it was four-chambered and hot-blooded. I got TONS of tuff on Dinosaurs! Oh dear, dont let me get too off-topic, or else i'll go all nutzy... *looks around nervously for angry off-topic ninja turtles* _________________ Last night I played a blank tape at full blast. I've always sorta wanted to be a paleonthologist, archeologist, or anything that involves discovering stuff in the dirt. Too bad it isn't really as exciting as Indiana Jones or Jurasic Park.
*Tries to sneek back on topic* On the other hand, I've also had the dream of creating some sort of mutagen that combines human and animal dna. Don't think I'll ever see that one through, though... |
Heh....there's always a possibility for that. Take a look at cloning, for example. No one had any idea such a process could be done, but someone found a way. Sometimes science scares me
|
*sigh* you should see my origin... thats got all the mutagen melding DNA pandemonium you want...gotta get my prologue and chapter one of my long story typed up! my origin, and how i met the guys is gonna be in the whole thing.
|
Ooh, you're gonna grace us with your life story, too? How cool is that! I'm currently writing about how I met the TMNT too! Great minds think alike, eh?
|
Some things sci-f do ,ake it to reality, while others still remain undone. It hink the reason why they went ahead with cloning was due to many more reasons on why it could be a benefit. (o course, I'm not all for cloning though... being the religious nut that I am)
I bet as soon as they found a medical benefit for human/animal hybrids, they'll prolly make it happen! |
Oh oH! I should get some of my Pursuit story up with the pictures i made! Its got LOTS of animal/human hybrids! sone of the characters sound alil' like the TMNT tho... Taladh and Niger are like Splinter, Rynchoseph like Raphael, Hannah like Don/Leo, Carcharadon like...shredder? and Clannad like Mike...
*runs away from off-topic psonics(in the story too!)* Somebody bap me when i go to far! Ack! _________________ Last night I played a blank tape at full blast. The mime next door went nuts. [ This Message was edited by: Machias Banshee on 2002-03-18 18:49 ] |
hah... that also reminds me of that Mirror fic I started, then turned over to Dawn's "build a story" thing. I sent the Turtles way into the future, and they saw that animal/human hybrids were everywhere.
|
I got SO many stories im planning to write, The allnighter, the homeless one, the origin story, AS Well as working more on my Pursuit story!
Phew! good thing i dont mention the story in which i make all the guys dinosaurs! Ah crud! |
LOL!! Sounds like you're gonna be busy, Machias!
|
Ninja Dinos?!
|
Um, yeah? Well, it happened about my freshman year in HS, and I was
oh shoot! i gotta get off for a while so they can fix our fallen water fountain! When i return, i'll tell the epic tales! maybe a fanfic section thread to keep on topic here... bye! |
Sure! And I thought I was the only one with wild concoctions like Horse Ninjas, Turtle eQuestrians, etc, etc.
|
Im back!
Should i put my strange stories up in a new topic in the fanfics section? |
Sure, if you're absolutely sure the water foutain will be okay.
|
That would probably be good.
|
water fountains fine *groan*
I'll call it something like "previews before the main feature" or something like that, and talk about my upcoming fics and such... But to keep this topic on... I believe the guys have their bouts of cold and warm bloodedness... "lukewarm" or "ready to eat" temperature... _________________ Last night I played a blank tape at full blast. Yay! Though "Fanfic previews" would be just as nice.
|
Hey, since we have so many fanfic writers here, why don't we make a thread for everyone to discuss any fanfics they've read or any upcoming fanfics they're planning to write?
|
Im off to plot ...
|
Yeah.. after reading Su Stitler's fic, I started to wonder if the Turtles really did have to niberante in the winter. (I doubt Eastman & Laird thought much on that detail)
But the comics are starting to show now the guys really don't like winter. |
Heck, I don't really like winter too much either. They didn't seem too comfortable in City at War either.
|
If i could Id take all the turtles and snuggle them by the fire to keep them warm. I remember reading something in the childhood stories about Splinter having them do that, so it would be easier to take care of them...

*Skips back on topic* I am a believer in the mixed cold and warm blooded theory. |
don't they spit acid or something as well
|
Nah, that was another species... (looks to Machias - what was its name again?) The one with the frilly flaps on his neck, and he spit that acidity glop in the Fat Dude's face trying to sneak out with the DNA.
|
dilophosaurus! Ask me ANYthing about Jp, and i can probly give you an answer.
|
which movie made the most money out of the three again?
