New IDW collection for non-Eastman/Laird Vol. 1 issues

Looks like #13, 16, and #18 of Vol. 1 won't be "skipped" for long, they'll just be released in a separate format:

http://www.amazon.ca/Teenage-Mutant-...g_hu-rd_dp_img

The original stories of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles come roaring back to shelves - in all-new, full color - with the line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics trade paperbacks! Volume 1 contains Mirage Studios' issues #13, 16, and 18 - showcasing favorite tales like "The Peoples Choice," "A TMNT Time Tale," and "The Shell of the Dragon."

They're going to be in color...for #18 that doesn't surprise me as that WAS released in color back in the day, but were the other two?

Venom 01-22-2012 12:25 AM

Hm, only 3 issues per trade? Without doing much thinking that's what, 11-12 trades for the non-Kevin/Peter Volume 1 stuff?

Kendamu 01-22-2012 12:29 AM

Ooh! Shell of the Dragon in color? Freakin' awesome! I'm in!

Eh, there's like two people on this planet that enjoy "A TMNT Time Tale." But whatever, I guess they're just going down the line, for better or worse.

Powder 01-22-2012 12:48 AM

I guess I'm one of the two. I love those issues Mark did.

Oh please. #16, while not your preferred blood bath/swear fest/beer party, is harmless fun and not even compatible to the ridiculousness of the second two Martin stories.

And I'm for them printing the issues in order and not skipping any, so this'll do.

I guess that much is true.

Totally not against them reprinting this stuff, I'd just hate to see it come at the expense of the better stuff later on -- that's my only thing.

What makes you say that? They're releasing these in little spurts, to keep the order, but to keep the Eastman and Laird "canon" intact. What makes you think they'll stop because they're releasing the issues in chronological order?

If material like the Martin or Hedden-McWeeney stuff is put out there and sales not-so-coincidentally drop to levels that no longer justify future "filling in the blanks" TPBs. I'd hate to see "The River," or "Twilight of the Ring," or "Halls of Lost Legends" or "Leatherhead Too" be casualties.

Galactus 01-22-2012 02:20 AM

I tend to agree with Andrew on this. It seems like an odd choice to start off with. (A vast understatement)

Wouldn't it be a better idea to try and group the non Eastman/Laird stories together by creator. Put Dooney's "The Peoples Choice", "Dreams of Stone" and "Masks" Parts 1 - 3 in the same trade.

Same with Veitch's "The River" and couple it with "Sky Highway" . You could probably group together Dan Berger's "Leatherhead Too" with his Tales V. 2 stories featuring LH and so on.

Then group any overflow together. Maybe try and tie them with a theme or something.

Jester 01-22-2012 02:26 AM

Yes but isn't Leatherhead, Too and many of of those other stories mentioned "canon". I'd assume that Dooney's The Peoples Choice is because it was later adapted by Laird in the 4Kids series. I'm sure they will be grouped in Vol 3 (or later) of the Ultimate Collection. I see these as "Well we've gotta do them all...just in case, but they aren't part of the 'story'."

EDIT: Wait...why is The Peoples Choice in this release....I'll show myself out.

Nobody cares about what Laird said is and isn't canon anymore. It's up to IDW and their legal department what they can and can't reprint.

That's pretty much what I suggested at the IDW boards (pretty much a TMNT Presents: A.C. Farley type deal which would also allow shorts and back-up strips to be reprinted as well) and while Bobby said that was an approach being considered, it looks like they went the chronological route. I have the same worries as it's almost like inviting the same decline in popularity Volume 1 experienced when these issues were published the FIRST time. At least with creator-centric collections they can prioritize the stories that stick closely with the tone of the Eastman/Laird issues whose sales IDW is so pleased with so far. Makes more sense to me... Then again, perhaps IDW is going with a cheaper investment with these reprints (hence the paperback and small price tag) that sales is less of an issue to continue these volumes... Hopefully we'll hear some sort of official word from IDW soon on their plans on this soon.

marcelangelo 01-22-2012 04:17 AM

wow, I for one am glad that they keep pushing turtles comics so intensively..;)with the archie reprint and the first idw material around the corner to be reprinted in tpb this is the third(!) turtles comic book in the near future not counting ultimate collection vol 2 and a possible second print run of ult.c. vol 1...truly a reason to cry out:COWABUNGA, MOTHERF....!!!!...and later worry about if I like everything they chose to go into that collection...I'd say, don't worry, amigos, these books seem to pop out of the ground and people won't shy away if they don't like one of all these books so much...with turtles they got a huge hit on their hands like we witness at the moment...the good stuff will come!!;)

just checked and I am only missing issue #13 from this book...;(but now I don't understand if they do it chronologicly, why not start with issue 12?

They're not going by what anyone said was canon. These "Ultimate Collections" are rounding up issues that Eastman and/or Laird drew or wrote. Whether collaboratively or not.

Maybe I need to refresh myself on Mirage comics, but what story really does fit that description besides Bodycount?

Even the first issue is relatively tame compared to what else is out there in comics. It only seems "extreme" now because of how much slapstick and silliness was in the cartoon.

CyberCubed 01-22-2012 09:25 AM

I guess this means the next oversized hard cover will probably be Shades of Gray and City at War....probably split into two or more volume's.

I assume #16 is here simply because they're going in order. 13, 16, and 18 are the only 3 skipped so far in the Eastman collections.

I also assume Volume 2 will get the oversized hardcover treatment after City at War.

John Pannozzi 01-22-2012 09:38 AM

Yeah, I must admit having a very soft spot for TMNT Vol. 1 #16. I fondly remember reading it for the very first time on NinjaTurtles.com back in the spring/summer of 2009.

But I already own all three of these issues via the TPBs that Mirage put out 20 years ago (and I own #17 twice since it was also in Eastman's 20th Anniversary book), so I'm not in hurry to get this unless the quality of the scanning/printing is as least as good as the earlier collections, though I obviously want to support TMNT and have the later stuff reprinted.

Though the likelihood of having #24-26 and 30 reprinted is pretty nil, since Rick Veitch never signed away the rights to his TMNT work. And I have no clue if Viacom and/or IDW would give Rick a deal he would consider better than what Mirage offered him, so we'll see how things pan out.

Here's hoping they do. It would be a shame not see the "good" Vol. 1 guest issues reprinted.

Matches Malone 01-22-2012 12:02 PM

And another thing, if IDW is comfortable jumping around chronologically to collect just the Eastman/Laird works, then I REALLY don't get why they don't use the same approach for the remaining issues. Hmm...

DrSpengler 01-22-2012 01:08 PM

Well, this isn't my ideal way of seeing the stories collected, but I'm still thrilled that IDW is getting them out there PERIOD. The more product, the better.

Granted, this could create some confusion if they decide to go back and release everything in chronological collections.

Their Transformers collections are a mindboggling mess. First they released each arc in individual trades, then they released Best Of arcs focused on certain writers and artists, then they released deluxe hardcovers that collect each miniseries in publication order, and NOW they're releasing deluxe hardcovers of every issue in a "suggested reading order".

It's confusing for anybody trying to just get into IDW's Transformers series and, well, it's STILL pretty confusing for those in the know, as well.

I'm rather of the opinion that they should release the material as straight-forwardly as possible the first time around so as to make things easier on consumers as they can.

Regardless, I'll repeat that I'm pleased the stuff is getting released PERIOD. It's been the better part of two decades since ANY of this material has seen print in any format. Hopefully newcomers will be able to figure out how IDW is setting up their trades and enjoy the material.

ToTheNines 01-22-2012 02:28 PM

I wonder if they'll all have red headbands in this book or not...

marcelangelo 01-22-2012 03:15 PM

now here is why spengs is called the doctor!...;)..I agree very much with you, for all we know idw may have a plan figured out about all this anyway and we will see lots of great turtles comics action rolling in on us;)

All very true. It's definitely an exciting time right now I think to be a turtles fan! While it's not my preferred method, IDW is being very good to the TMNT franchise, I think. And if the quality of the current ongoing stays strong, I'm sure this will help build up interest for these reprints as well, so there really isn't too much to worry about. Just all a game of wait and see for now.

You've just made me cautiously PISSED.

If they turn these Mirage issues into rainbow brite I am going to urinate on everybody.

You know they won't do that so stop jumping to conclusions.

Matches Malone 01-22-2012 05:55 PM

They didn't even fix the misspelling of Michelangelo's name on the "retro-variant," why would they go out of their way to change the colors of the masks in the reprints? In a new series, anything goes, but with reprinted fan favorites, it's a different story.

Were the Archie reprints in black & white? Just curious...

What do you mean "go out of their way"? They're coloring the issues either way.

Already been done for the second print of the issue, expertly hand-colored by Bode and some others.

I guarantee the new coloring won't look nearly as good. ;p

Well, I meant go out of their way as in to change something that doesn't need to be changed. There is nothing calling for the masks to be changed into the rainbow colors; the IDW ongoing series is very much a separate series. Just because they brought those colors into that series doesn't mean they are going to needlessly impose that on everything every chance they get.

Yes, but the bandana change seems very unnecessary.

Toby Barrett 01-22-2012 07:50 PM

But it's silly to jump to the conclusion that they're going to do the same thing in a series they're not actively working on.
Just because they did something in the series they actually have an active part in creating doesn't mean they're going to give "Michaelangelo" and orange bandana, orange knee pads, and photoshop an initialized belt buckle on him.

Jester 01-22-2012 07:52 PM

It's a legitimate worry...since they are coloring them in-house. I'm sure they won't, but there's a possibility.

The idea that they would colorized bandanas in Mirage books is the dumbest thing I ever heard. IDW is giving TMNT excellent treatment so I see nothing to be concerned about.

Samhain 01-22-2012 09:42 PM

This is great to hear. And I'm not worried about IDW doing Multi-Colored in this collected book. I mean, that just wouldn't make any sense.
