Teaser of 2014 TMNT CGI revealed to private audience! (No video inside)

Haven't seen it myself yet, but apparently there was a huge Turtle themed party put on by Nick/Viacom where they showed a brief CG clip for the new movie...

Hopefully someone recorded it...

Veery interesting... it sounds like CGI proof of concept footage to prove the approach they want to take will work and be convincing.

i hope the turtles aren't 100% cgi, hopefully it's suits with CGI for the faces or something (like Where The Wild Things Are)

Yes, please! Loved the suit work in that movie.

sgtfbomb 10-18-2012 04:45 AM

You gotta love how they mention the footage, go as far as to say that it drew applause, but don't even bother to say anything about it.

pannoni1 10-18-2012 05:36 AM

If the movie is fully CG animated rather than a live action/CGI hybrid, I suspect that it may possibly be in continuity with the TV show since unlike the 2007 movie which was done by Warner Bros. and not 4kids Entertainment, both projects are Viacom-related, since Paramount and Nickelodeon are both Viacom companies. Plus, without any calls for a special movie cast, they may very well just be using some of the TV voice actors. But I feel that the sooner the trailer, the better since it will allow more time to draw people to watch the TV show to build momentum for the release.

Zany Orange Dude 10-18-2012 07:16 AM

I'd really like to see this clip.

hmm... I hope that's not the case. I would rather a new movie with a separate story line independent from the series. Otherwise we'll just get a long drawn out kids cartoon episode with slightly better looking animation. I was looking forward to a PG-13 Live Action/CGI hybrid in the style of Transformers. It's something that's never been done before with TMNT and I think it would draw a much larger audience by positioning itself as a serious film series.

i feel the same way

Bob 10-18-2012 09:16 AM

When they say CG clip, I don't think they mean the whole film is now animated. I'm pretty sure they're referring to animatics. It will be a live-action film, with the Turtles and other mutant characters most likely being CGI.

I love how the majority of the article is about the new show, and then they add this at the end:

Like others have said, it was probably early proof-of-concept kind of stuff. Would be interesting to see it, but I doubt it was anything special.

TurtleTitan97 10-18-2012 12:41 PM

I really want to see this teaser. Hopefully it will be uploaded online soon.

CyberCubed 10-18-2012 06:26 PM

If this movie still has anything to do with aliens, I'd rather it not come out at all.

The Stryker 10-18-2012 06:34 PM

You're also the guy with the obsession over TV Shows and the number of episodes they get.

Also I bet you'll be there day one regardless.

TMNT movies are very low on my list of priorities. We've only ever gotten 4 theatrical TMNT movies and only the first two are generally well received. I'd rather no new TMNT movie ever again than a bad one that destroys the franchise

And I think a theatrical movie with the Turtles being aliens would do more harm than good. I can't see the kids watching the Nick show right now either accept a movie where the Turtles are so radically different and turned to aliens.

Exactly. That is the only way to go. Everyone knows how pissed everyone will be if we don't get the rubber suits. Where The Wild Things Are was awesome and that's how they should do it.

But what's likely to happen (IMO) is that because Michael Bay is behind it (which brings the big money for the budget), they will be able to make 100% cgi Turtles that are believable as real and everything else will be live.

We've already had hints from the director with his ROTPOTA references.

Plus it seems like they want to do some spectacular stuff with the martial arts which would be easier if you mocap guys like Jackie Chan or Ernie Reyes Jr. (Even though he was badass in the suit as Donatello - I think he would do better without the extra weight)

marcelangelo 10-19-2012 08:57 AM

I still think people are too naive when they expect michael bay to do a transformer-turtles movie now...I cant say it out ot loud often enough:michael bay is producing this movie...not DIRECTING..it is the directors child that we will get to see in the end...also while I don't enjoy the majority of michael bays directed films myself, the guy is really succesfull regardless of what we all think of his products...you gotta give him that...that implys that the dude knows what will work in the business and what wouldnt....we all more or less know I like to think) that turtles will work best with real costumes and cgi side effects(just invented that word;)..)...
lastly:
as ridley scott often stated this year it is much much more economic to do something for real than to use cgi effects...okay, the man was talking about building props and sets, but I think this counts as well for suits and puppets..also it just gives the audience a much more realer feeling(if the costumes are made well again(please go to jim hensons creature shop, you know you want it too)..just the fact that these ...beings..these..creatures are lit in the same light as the background and the other actors...just immensly incrreases the way we as a participating audience are emotionally involved in the characters lives...
q.e.d.

Candy Kappa 10-19-2012 09:06 AM

fully CG turtles can work just as well as costumes, even better when the stunt actors are not hindered by the limits of the costume.

But it, as all things need. it need to be done right. As much it is popular to bash on the Star Wars prequels, they still have many many great examples how bad integrated CG can ruin a moment.

Such as General Grievous flipping out his light sabers and Obi-Wan not reacting because there is nothing there and nothing to signal the actor what is going on.

Just because something is going to be CG'd, it still need to be there in the filming process, something as simple as a guy wearing green spandex.

marcelangelo 10-19-2012 10:26 AM

whatever it'll be..I think the key component for it to work would be that they don't overdo it..todays action films really tend to exagerate the acrobatics...which takes me-at least- pretty quickley out of the picture...
but it doesn't end there...most of those films i am thinking off when referring to fully cgi characters produce super crisp clear environments and this often doesn't look rooted in the reality of things..as in real life NOTHING is super clear to see..you mustn#t forget to put air between the characters and objects..it may sound silly but if you listen to camera operators in dangerous days for example(documentary about the making of blade runner) you#ll get a better idea of what I am asking for;)..

anyway, I don't want to limit my appreceation for this upcomming film by my own tastes, so I am trying to stay open for everything...I guess my point is just you have so many obsatcles when working with a being or environment/scene that doesn't exist in reality but will be added in later on a computer that MANY examples of such films stumble over too many of these obstacles in my oppinion...but ie the new nick show did deliver a pretty well looking and just working example of how to do it right, so I am open;)..

have you read the WHOLE script? I actually really enjoyed reading it (minus a few parts and details here and there).

CG is a tool. It can be misused. I think they have a tendency to make things appear as if you're watching somebody else play a video game (which is tedious compared to actually playing the video game), and that's where my disappointment in how the CG is used surfaces.

I think it works best when it still follows a basic laws and limitations, and doesn't seem weightless. It can be too fluid and clean, whereas it may not be so in real life.

Even the costumes from the movies were misused. They looked great in the first film. Yeah, if you look for faults, you will find them. (The same can easily be said about CG, even modern CG) But, they worked for the grungy, urban style of the first film. When they appeared in the more colorful lighting of the second film, they looked less real. And, of course, the poorly designed costumes of the third film made it all the more disillusioning. Maybe I shouldn't bring up The Next Mutation?

I think they'll go the full CG route for the Turtles. It does work. Davy Jones in Dead Man's Chest is a good example. Gollum is another.

Now, there are times when full CG is unnecessary. I think the Clone Troopers in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are a good example. Even in a shot of Temeura Morrison standing there talking to Obi Wan, he was "wearing" a completely CG outfit, which was both pointless, expensive (yes, it IS actually more expensive to CG than it is to make a costume), and you can tell, as his head seems a tad bit disjointed, and floaty over his body. The argument can be made for the thousands of them, but I'm talking about the close ups. (By the way, contrary to popular belief, they actually used a lot of miniature shots in those films)

The movie IS coming 2014? I thought it went back into development hell? 2014 really isn't that far off it's less than 2 years if it comes out in the summer and only about 2 years if it comes out after the summer.

May 2014; 30th anniversary is the excuse they used to push it back

Bob 10-21-2012 02:26 PM

As of now, it’s set for 16th May. There's a very reasonable chance that may change, though, as Warner Bros. have set the new Godzilla film for exactly the same day. Basically, one will move. Either way, it’s coming out in the summer of 2014.

I'm thinking TMNT might be pushed back more, as Godzilla's script is almost finished, and it's in the early stages of casting. As far as we know, TMNT isn't even finished with the rewrite yet.

chrisdude 11-12-2012 06:42 PM

Mocap turtles in live action sounds like the way to do it, to me. Nothing fully animated is taken seriously by adults in America. And a PG-13, fully-animated movie would be suicide.

Costumes? Eh... from what I've heard Eastman say, they're planning serious martial arts action, this time. Maybe you could do it in suits, but it would probably require an overhaul. Something a lot lighter. And I'm sure the animatronic tech has progressed over the years (it does still exist, right?), but I have no idea how much...

But yeah, considering how this movie is nothing but words on a page, I'm sure whatever clip they played wasn't footage.

Bashing on the Prequels? Nah, not my kind of sport! I gotta love my those Prequels! True art, in story and in visuals!

But what do you mean Obi Wan dosn't react? Might want to take another look at that. jump to 1:21 to see.

But you made a point with the green spandex guy. While i would perfer non CGI ninja turtles contrary to my veiws on yoda, CGI turtles coud work.

The scene is not in the video, there is a shot where both Obi-Wan and Grievous are in the same shot, Obi in the foreground with the back to the camera and Grievous in the background. Grievous flips out his blades and Obi gives no reaction in that shot.

I really don't want to flip through Revenge to find it, I've seen it once and that was one time too many. The Plinkett review deals with the same scene, when he goes through the things that are wrong with the movie.

Title of thread:

clearly stands that there are no video inside

would we ever get a trailer/teaser, you can bet we'd have 10 different threads about it

Plinkett? Don’t even mention him. He’s just a nitpicker, yet another fanboy ranting. If you look at it logically, the prequels have the same problems of the original trilogy. And if you look outside the internet, and at reviews around the time of release, they received around the same amount of love as the original trilogy.

We all have our opinion. But hey, we aren’t here to talk about star wars, this is a Ninja Turtles forums so let’s get back on topic.

The prequels have a lot more problems than the original trilogy. Terrible script, bad casting, bad acting, stupid cg, jar jar binks.plinket has logical points to why these movies have no real characters and nothing a person can latch onto like in the orginal trilogy. Empire strikes back was so good because lucas didnt write it. Im not a big fan of jj nor the star trek remake but I have hopes he'll make a better movie than lucas has since the 80s. Anyone who says the original trilogy has as many faults as the prequels knows nothing about film or story telling. Just because phantom menace made money doesn't mean people loved it when it came out because a lot of reviews and movie goers hated it.
