Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation airing on the Hub starting January 12

Quote:

“Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation” (1:30-2 p.m.) Hub TV Network Series Premiere
Everyone’s favorite turtles are coming to The Hub! Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo are four genetically mutated turtles who have grown into human-sized, ninja-powered crime-fighters living in the sewers of New York City. Under the tutelage of Master Splinter, these four teens have spent their formative years fighting their nemesis, Shredder, and his evil army. But now, they are introduced to a new foe, Dragon Lord. It will take all the power of the turtles to combat the new villain, but lucky for them, they will have help from a new ninja turtle, a female turtle named Venus De Milo. Rating: Y7-FV

Weird news, I guess they want to cash-in on the new turtles revival and they have some deals with Saban Brands since Transformers Prime a Hasbro/Hub property is airing on the Vortexx. I wonder if Fred Wolf will try to also air the cartoon they own on another network.

This was always the reason I thought Nick bought the 2k3 cartoon, not because they had any intention airing it (as they've shown) but they didn't want 4Kids to keep airing the show when Nick was airing their new show.

Powder 12-29-2012 11:49 PM

Haha, that's pretty interesting. Happy to see it get another chance, even if it's just to be met by the same fate.

Cipher 12-30-2012 12:02 AM

This is ... bizarre.

I guess Hasbro figured "Why not?" with the success Nick is having with the Turtles.

It's unfortunate that the only version they have access to is barely fit to air.

zkarlette 12-30-2012 01:05 AM

I just hope that NM doesn't give the New show a bad rap in some weird way.

Green Machine 12-30-2012 04:41 AM

Oh lawd!!! I'm sure I'll end up watching it. It was the only TMNT available on Netflix so I watched it with my 6 year old daughter. She loves Venus (hopefully she'll grow out of that).

pannoni1 12-30-2012 06:56 AM

Despite being the black sheep, airing on the same day as new Nick episodes could provide some with rediscovering this series. Since it only lasted 26 episodes, there isn't much to repeat from which means that it will probably cycle through two times at the most to make way for other shows. In a way its similar to airing Movie III, which while it was a universe killer back then, still has support nowadays. One question is if they will be using the old or the new logo as seen on the DVDs.

BubblyShell22 12-30-2012 07:21 AM

Wow. This is interesting, but since I don't get the Hub, I won't be watching it. I probably wouldn't watch it anyway.

CyberCubed 12-30-2012 07:23 AM

So instead of seeing the original toon or the 4kids show airing, we get....THIS.

Considering the show only has 26 episodes, they're going to blow through it rather quickly. What are they going to do, rerun the same 26 eps over and over?

sdp 12-30-2012 07:55 AM

Well the Hub obviously has some deal with Saban Brands which they don't with Nick (2k3) or FW (OT) so it's what they wanted to air from Saban brands. They'll probably blow through the show once or twice and then air another Saban brands property, who knows it could really catch on but if it does they'll just replace it with another Saban AmeriToku like Beetleborgs or Power Rangers since they obviously can't ask for new episodes of TNM.

Weren't they also airing DCAU shows and X-Men:E? Those shows are also finished and advertise non Habsro properties but they wanted to air them because they were popular franchises.

Gyt Kaliba 12-30-2012 10:31 AM

Well...that was unexpected. Hard to say this has me too excited when there's Animaniacs to look forward to, but I may give it a watch or two just to finally see more than the first 3 or so episodes I've seen.

...I'm going to regret it, aren't I.

CyberCubed 12-30-2012 11:12 AM

I wish the show kept the Foot Clan around. That's why I like the first two eps more than all the others.

Seems to me that they got rid of all the TMNT characters except Splinter and the Turtles, and replaced all the villains with Power Ranger type characters.

To think this show could have given us a live action Baxter, Rat King, Leatherhead or even April and Casey.

To be honest it barely felt like a Turtle show.

sdp 12-30-2012 12:09 PM

TNM has some pretty decent redeeming episodes and characters. It's definitely worth a watch at least more than the first 3 episodes, there's some episodes that are far worse than the first 3 but there are also better ones. If you like the foot, the episode where Shredder comes back is pretty neat. We got a Baxter Stockman of sorts with Dr. Quease, his episodes are hit or miss, usually miss but when he's used correctly he was a nice replacement for Stockman. Sure TNM didn't have many of the TMNT staple characters but is that necessarily a bad thing? It created new rogues which is always good for any franchise, it's basically what the OT did and if anything the most memorable characters from 2k3 were original like Bishop. All the characters created by TNM definitely feel like they belong there. They all got hit by the "giggle ray" that the OT turtles did in Turtles Forever but if you can get passed that it's a decent show. I'd love to see those characters written to their full potential in the new comic or the new show, it'd be a shame to continue wasting some of the characters. Bonesteel/Silver could all be fan favorites if given a chance and others like Dragonlord and Dr. Quease also show plenty potential. And even someone as generic as Vammi would fit right in along other generic villains 2k3/Nick have done in their respective shows.

Interestingly enough Nick has exclusive rights to the new PR shows for at least 2 more years and has plenty of deals with Saban brands, theoretically a second crossover of TMNT/PR is possible as it was back in the day when TNM aired. I doubt it'll happen but the chances are higher than they've ever been and probably ever will since PR's will likely move to a different place (Vortexx/The Hub) after the contract is over.

Donatello19 12-30-2012 02:25 PM

So, Nick doesn't own the Next Mutation? Anyways, I think it's kind of weird they are doing this...I hope it doesn't confuse kids as to why there is a female turtle/why it's live action/different continuity etc.

Drose18 12-30-2012 02:40 PM

Good thing no kids watch the hub! :tgrin:

Why would they be confused? Were you confused as a kid that the movies were different from the show or that TNM which aired immediately after the OT was also different? Were you confused that BTAS was different from the also airing Superfriends Batman?

Oh, I don't know, maybe because one show has a 5th turtle and the other one doesn't? Or that Shredder isn't there? The two shows are completely different and kids would not know which continuity to follow etc.

No, because those aired at different times. The whole point of my argument is that the nick show and the NM are airing at the same time. Plus, the movie was, well, a movie, which is different than a t.v show. We're talking about twodifferent t.v shows airing at the same time

I have never watched either of those shows and I have no intention to.

Does that answer your questions?

sdp 12-30-2012 09:15 PM

Well Superfriends aired alongside BTAS and they have clearly different versions of Batman, hell more recently we had Young Justice and BATB with different versions of batman.

umm.. it's not like Shredder is in every Nick episode. Kids aren't stupid they aren't going to get confused.

Your logic makes no sense. How about kids will be able to tell the difference because one is live action and the other is CG...

jeeze, you must be one of those executives that made the silly bat embargo in the mid 2000's because kids would be "confused"...

Bauer536 12-31-2012 08:05 AM

I'm not sure what to say about this. I feel this will be a bad idea. Is the Nick series still going to do well with this other crapfest on the Hub? I hope this doesn't make the recent show get a bad reputation because of TNM. Why? Why this again? There were only 26 episodes! Do we really want this to happen?:trolleye:

Unless, this is to be done so the Nick series can get more viewers. It might make sense. I mean, TNM only has 26 episodes.:twink:

I don't know. This just bothers me.:tgrumble:

UPDATE - The Nick series, where I live, is mostly on at 11:00 through 11:30. TNM is on at "1:30-2 p.m." That's later after the Nick series is over for the day.:tcool: Well, that part makes me feel better.

This is the truth isn't it. I mean it feels like a very children oriented network overall. But I don't think I know any children that actually watch it...

Ninjinister 12-31-2012 09:52 AM

I've already got the whole thing on DVD, so this doesn't really affect me at all. However, due to the exposure, this could potentially lead to artifacts of NM leaking into one or more of the series' newer incarnations.

Which reminds me, wasn't 2K3 supposed to air for a few months prior to 2012 on Nickelodeon? Did that ever actually happen?

ToTheNines 12-31-2012 10:27 AM

It was supposed to air on Nicktoons, or Nickelodeon 2, but never did.

CyberCubed 12-31-2012 10:30 AM

They're probably either waiting for the 10th anniversary or until the bulk of the Nick show catches on before the 4kids series is re-visited.

I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see the 4kids series airing on one of their blocks as well as new DVD sets coming up. Shout Factory would be the best company for the job.

I'm also wondering if Lionsgate is now going to sell the OT to Nick now that they're apparently done with DVD releases. It would be interesting to see what Nick would do with it if they owned it.

sdp 12-31-2012 11:44 AM

Nick probably has no interest in airing 2k3, they bought it because it was part of the deal and 4Kids had licensing/merchandise agreements which Nick needed and it also stopped other networks from airing still current show so something like what is happening with TNM wouldn't happen (especially since unlike the OT or TNM 2k3 still looks recent). Nick has plenty of properties to air and yet they choose not to so they have no interest in airing 2k3 or buying the OT since they won't air them. Hell Nick bought the license to air Power Rangers on Nicktoons for 2 years and they didn't really use it except for a few marathons here and there, they didn't care to re-run 700+ episodes of content old and new of power rangers. It's not like all the shows were old, most of those were recent shows with recent effects.

That would be the best thing to come out of this, like mentioned TNM may have some enjoyable stuff but the best thing TNM brought to the turtles franchise is characters with plenty of potential. TNM didn't use them very well but another incarnation could. I'd be happy and I wouldn't have to praise TNM as much since people would now know the characters it made had plenty of potential in a proper show.

Donatello19 12-31-2012 12:03 PM

So nick doesn't own the NM OR the OT? I thought they owned everything of TMNT.

ToTheNines 12-31-2012 12:23 PM

No one here knows the exact legal story behind it all, even though some like to pretend to. But from what I understand, Nick owns all the stuff and can air it, but they don't have DVD distribution rights to everything.

CyberCubed 12-31-2012 02:16 PM

Mirage didn't own the rights for the original cartoon, so when Nick bought everything Mirage had, they did NOT get the rights for the original toon.

Nick got whatever Mirage owned, which meant all the comics, including Archie and Image, the 4kids series, and that's it.

Neither the original toon nor Next Mutation are owned by Nick.

What the hell are you talking about? Nick only purchased what Mirage owned.

Since Mirage never owned the OT or Next Mutation, they don't have the rights to those shows. They can't air them nor release DVDs of them unless Lionsgate or Saban sells it to them as well.

TheCanadiandrome 12-31-2012 02:56 PM

damn! too bad the Hub isn't in Canada

sdp 12-31-2012 05:35 PM

I am no expert but this has been said many times by newsoutlets and Mirage people. Nick only owns everything Mirage and from the 4Kids show. The OT is owned by FW however all the designs of the mutants and pretty much everything from the OT is owned by Mirage just not the cartoon itself. There is an interview with Eastman about this. TNM is another issue, we know Eastman designed Venus and we assume that Mirage owns all the things from TNM especially after the lawsuit with FW, however the actual show was a Saban property which he then sold to Disney and then bought back from Disney so now Saban owns the TNM show, that's it, he can't have Venus or any TNM character show up in Power Rangers. 4Kids owned a part including licensing for the 2k3 show but Nick outright bout that including everything from the show, it cost them like 10 million IIRC that's what 4kids got from the acquisition. And finally the videogame exclusives characters are apparently/might be owned by Konami, I don't remember who mentioned that so it can't be stated as fact but I read it here on the forums around the time of the 2007 movie.

Holy crap that makes my head hurt :-? :o:sick:

Guitar_Raph 12-31-2012 11:44 PM

That's so cool the Hub is being brave to air that misfit series (for those who despise it).

They got rid of the two game shows (Life, Scrabble Showdown), Hubworld (like Danny Tieger's improv music) & even the classic Batman is gone. The only thing I watch on the Hub is Family Game Night.

Xav 01-01-2013 01:22 AM

So who owns the movies?

zodiac brave 01-01-2013 07:58 AM

i would assume new line, seeing as the movies were made through a licensing deal and mirage never owned them. again, thats just an assumption...

Bossa Nova 01-01-2013 03:53 PM

I have no idea why, but I find this unbelievably hilarious. I'm not a fan of NM, doubt I ever will be, and the thought of being aired now, right with the launching of a brand new, totallu kick-ass series is just...strange. The only thing I hope is that new fans won't take a sudden liking for Venus and hope to see her on Nick's show. Ugh.

Leonardo87 01-01-2013 04:48 PM

Actually Warner Bros. owns the 4 movies since New Line Cinema was bought out by them.

zodiac brave 01-01-2013 06:40 PM

ah, i wasnt aware new line was bought out. either way, nick dont own em. :ohwell:

Guitar_Raph 01-02-2013 06:03 AM

Think of it this way, you could have a TMNT Doubleheader every Saturday, if you have DirecTV.

12:30 (CST); Nnja Turtles; The Next Mutation (Hub; 294)
1:00 (CST); Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Nick West; 300)

sdp 01-02-2013 08:23 AM

I remember when i was a kid I would watch BTAS and then watch the filmation Batman cartoon, even though I didn't like it as much I liked watching more Batman.

As far as the rights to the movies yes it's WB who seems to own them all including the new movie, that's why they've been packaged together. As far as the original characters from the movies who knows, we know Mirage owns Tokka/Rahzar and possibly Tatsu since he appears in the genesis game, not sure about the other characters outside them could go either way because like mentioned after the FW problem they were very special about characters but so are movie studios with their original characters. So we'll never know if Keno is available to be used or not since no one likely cares and the only memorable characters (tokka/rahzar) can be used.
