Remember the Punk Frogs?

Remember the punk frogs from the 1987 cartoon?
Attila the Frog Genghis Frog Rasputin the Mad Frog Napoleon BonaFrog Attachment 4776 I may be the only one but I loved these guys and I kinda wish that they give them a comeback. |
Considering they were in like 7 episodes its obvious people remember them.
|
Not everyone has seen the original cartoon and some people don't even remember them.
|
You are not the only one. They are my personal favorite allies and wish to see further use then a handful of original cartoon episodes and half made into figures. I'm not sure the best way to have them return but return is a must! They have potential and can serve as team B at times.Fun characters in need of furthur usage!

I'll bet no one could identify each frog by name from memory alone. The FW show probably could have done a little more to give them distinctive looks other than each wearing multi-colored shirts.

The frogs were named after historical figures just like the turtles were. I know Napoleon Bonafrog was named after Napoleon Bonaparte and Genghis Frog was named after Genghis Kahn. I never knew who Rasputin or Atilla were named after though.
I love their southern accents. |
The Punk Frogs were cool. Great episode with Leatherhead.
Like the Turtles, unless you spent any time paying attention, you wouldn't know which was which. They did follow the Turtle toy concept of having different green shades. The tv Turtles were all the same color !! It would be cool to have them back and introduced like this. The shadows. Four darkened figures in the background, and the line, in a southern accent.. "no, they ain't, We are the Kung Fu Frogs", and the they come hoppin and choppin out if them there shadows :tgrin: |
Strange Rasputin and Attila never got a toy. I wonder why?
|
Maybe the Ghengis didn't sell. They went all out with him tho, changing his toon design and making him a cool figure.
They could have released a set of all four, using same mounds and did the color thing and painting their shirts differently... Hmmm, there's an idea. I could pick up a few spare Napoleons and custom them up! |

Yep! I totally remember them! I always loved the episode where the left over mutagen in the water created a fountain of youth. I think it's "Leatherhead: Terror of the Swamps". The water made Mike hyper. One of my favorite scenes.
|
I thought you were going to say they're back in Pog form.

No. Nobody on this TMNT forum, especially this section for talk of the old cartoon, remembers the punk frogs.

I loved the Punk Frogs and like many others were sad they did not receive figures for Attila and Rasputin. My collection always felt incomplete as a child.
I loved that there was a mirror image group similar to the turtles but amphibians. I wish the Frogs got more play on the series, they never seem developed and were only seen as a team twice. There were so many opportunities for world building such as Where is their lair? What other enemies do they have? Do they have vehicles? I personally have loved a swamp boat. I really hope the Punk Frogs reappear on the Nick version at some point. |
I didn't really like the Frogs as a team but I understand they were created to be a foil to the TMNT.
If Nick ever brings them back, I hope its only Napoleon Bonafrog. He was really the only one that actually mattered. |

I want all four to come back, its not fun if just only one or two appear
|
I would love to see them have a come back in the new 2012 show. They were/are awesome.
|
and hopefully a more serious role this time
|
Nope, never heard of them. Are they some kind of a accidental mutants that was trained by Shredder and convinced that the Turtles was the bad guy?
They where named after real life persons: Attila the Hun Genghis Kahn Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin Napoleon Bonaparte That someone don't know who these guys are hurts a little. |
Well that's great you remember but not everyone knows who they are
|
On this board, they do.
|
yeah, most people on this boards knows of the Punk Frogs one way or the other.
If you wanted a thread dedicated to the Frogs, you should have named it a little better then the pompous "Hey, kiddies. Remember this?" Especially since after a quick search, i don't think the Punk Frogs have their own thread that isn't about finding the VHS with Invasion of the Punk Frogs on. |
It did get folks remembering them..
Mind you, I got my Ghengis and Napolion mixed up. It was Ghengis who was screen accurate, kinda, and Napolion who came later on. Doh! Gotta lay off that moonshine from there swamps! Anyway. Yeah, they are a cool bunch, and I looked at the customs and I like them. It is funny tho, how they totally retooled for Napolion when they could have just put him out in a different color of green. Instead we get a real mean looking frog creature. |
Hopefully they'll make a comeback but i guess that's up to fans
|
Napoleon was the only one who "mattered" in the sense of getting screen time, but that was probably done to sell his toy. Genghis had to have sold well or we never would have gotten Napoleon.
|
Aw man they were cool. They should bring them back. I don't get why Napoleon's toy looked like he did.

Weren't there only two personalities among them? Aside from their weapons, I couldn't tell Napoleon & Rasputin or Ghengis & Attilla apart. The first pair were the sensible frogs, while the others were just hillbillies.
|
Honestly, I never really remembered them until I got back into the fandom a few years ago and sort of slept through them back when the series was current. That said, its nice that the show itself produced its own "spinoff" before Biker Mice/Battletoads came along, and while they don't have quite the distinguished qualities of the four, its still easy to form a companion for each. They were nice comedic filler, but only in the first episode in which Splinter convinces that the Turtles are heroes by ending a fight in the sewers along with being good friends in the Leatherhead episode provides good fullfilment among them.

I would consider giving them various frog species, like a bullfrog of Genghis and so on. Quote:
The Frogs had different tropical shirts and weapons however they lacked the personality. They could have benefited from some individualism however, let's not forget, the cartoons largely serve to sell toys. Playmates wanted another group of 4 amphibian mutants and the FW crew came up with these guys (I have no idea if this is really how it happened). It's not like the Frogs were one-shot characters that appeared and then were gone. They reappeared several times! But, sadly, the writers never really moved them from cookie-cutter form. Maybe it was too hard to come up with different personalities without them coming off as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Frogs? Maybe instead of pizza they could have loved gumbo? I dont know... lol But I think a lot could have been done. |
Maybe they'll get a kung fu style since Spider bites kept calling the turtles Kung Fu frogs
|
I think the Mutanimals should have had Napoleon and Genghis instead if Jagwar and Dreadmon.
