How Did You Become A TMNT Fan?

Hey, I was just wondering if there are any TMNT fans on these boards that are completely new to the franchise and got hooked by the new cartoon (or the new comics etc).

I'd also like to see how many got hooked by mirage vol. 1 (i know of one already . . . he has "Mirage Fan" under his name  )

I'm going out on a limb that the majority got hooked from the original cartoon though :P

Leo656 07-21-2003 09:08 PM

Original cartoon, but my enthusiasm for it has dimmed slightly over the years.

Dane E5R 07-21-2003 09:36 PM

My big brother watched the first episode of the cartoon.. I guess he had been a fan of the comics, or somethin'. Anyway, I happened to watch it from then on. My first memory is the opening animation and theme song. The rest is history.

Raven 07-21-2003 09:44 PM

i was pretty young but I know it was the orignal cartoon that got me
hooked on the show.

malignant 07-21-2003 09:48 PM

for me it was the original cartoon...

but something else should be on that list......The first movie....in school most of my friends begin liking them after seeing the movie..which..of course..was a major hit.

Ashangelo 07-21-2003 09:48 PM

It was the orignal series that got me hooked I started watchin it when I was young I remember watching it on USA when I got up in the morning for school lol

The Master 07-21-2003 09:51 PM

I don't really know, but I do know that I did start to watch the original cartoon somehow.

Actually, interestingly enough, I think it may have been the toys where I saw the Turtles first.

I'm not totally sure...one of those two at least.

Stone Ill 07-21-2003 10:16 PM

You should've put Movies too..but anyways, I started liking it because of the cartoon.

XERO 07-21-2003 10:32 PM

Original cartoon. My cousin brought me on to it.

I love him for that. :D

Ninja Tiptup 07-21-2003 10:45 PM

The original cartoon all the way! Then the movies, archie comics, and video games.

Years after TMNT became my favorite franchise I finally discovered the original comics. Which make me like them even more!

Ralph2003 07-21-2003 10:53 PM

It was the original series.

Sparvid 07-22-2003 03:06 AM

None of the above

I got into the Archie comics, lost interest around the third movie. Came back around two years ago thanks to the Mirage Collected Books.

Psycrow 07-22-2003 03:23 AM

The original cartoon got me hooked.

Shellfox 07-22-2003 06:36 AM

original cartoon, but I'm not sure if the first ep I saw was the original 5 of attack of the killer pizzas

cqb101 07-22-2003 09:13 AM

Original cartoon. I've lost interest in it now. I'm more into the new toon, and the comics.

Taloniss 07-22-2003 09:28 AM

I got hooked off the original show. I still love it to this day.

Kiss_My_Shell 07-22-2003 09:54 AM

How I became a turtle fan

It was the cartoon and the movie the same time for me.I made my dad buy the tape for some reason, and watched the cartoon so much.

Loolaa 07-22-2003 01:44 PM

My brother was watching the old cartoon, so I started watching it (he hates it now. I embarrass him  ).
Two weeks later I was still watching it and buying the Archie comic series, and 6 months later I was getting the Mirage comics. Then the movie came out.

So yeah, it all started with the cartoon for me.

Supermik 07-22-2003 03:28 PM

Watching the old cartoon, beautiful moments of my life... I can't forget them... The Turtles are a part of my life!

When i was a child i remember when i was watching the show in front of my TV and i remember when i asked to my parents to have the Michelangelo's toy, they become crazy to find it...

tormentedvagrant 07-22-2003 03:28 PM

the old cartoon shined light on the mirage series for me.

PanMan 07-22-2003 04:43 PM

hmm. . . guess i forgot to put the movies in there too . . . thanks to whoever did.

for me it was the old toon. i remember watching it on YTV at 4:30 after school. it was on after "You can't do that on TV"

i remember my first toys too. there was only a raph and mikey, so my mom gave me a choice and i picked raph, mikey went to my bro.

Jephael 07-22-2003 05:47 PM

It wasn definitly the original cartoon, which I still enjoy to this day!

raphroehler2000 07-22-2003 06:26 PM

I suppose it was the original cartoon series. I remember watching that show all the time when it was on CBS. I had the toys and was in the fan club (still have the membership package that you get when you sign up). But I quickly forgot about them when I hit my middle school and high school ages, mostly because I concentrated on real life/personal stuff. But then at my senior year of high school, my mom finally got us a computer. It was my first time of using the Internet (besides school, of course). I remember browsing through pages when I came upon something called fanfiction. I wasn't sure what that meant, so I clicked on it. It brought me to some pages of stories written by the fans, stories with characters from movies, shows, etc. When browsing, I clicked on the Ninja turtle fanfiction pages. Suddenly, my love of the turtles started creeping back up to me. I read story after story and I found myself becoming the huge fan that I am today. Actually, I'm bigger fan now than I've ever been, and I owe it all to the great fans and storytellers out there. Why did these stories have such an impact? It made me realize that the TMNT can be portrayed anyway you want, not just from the cartoon. Whether it be love stories, tragic tales with death, life changing events, or a simple adventure. The stories I read made me laugh, or cry, or even smile. And that is what interests me the most. Now I always try to think of stories to write (with my fave Raph as the star of course) but nothing as of yet. So I guess the bottom line is that I finally became a true fan because of you guys, the TMNT authors. I just want to thank all of you fellow fans out there who have all written such terrific TMNT stories. Peace and good luck to all of you in the future.

Misfit 07-23-2003 01:02 PM

Old toon. The first episode I clearly remember seeing is April's Fool. Either that or Case of the Killer Pizza's, it was one of those two. I couldn't have been more than about 5 or 6 at the time but remember sitting in front of the TV completely entranced...one episode was all it needed for my TMNT obsession to begin. When the first movie came out, I went from really obsessed to totally and completely obsessed. The TMNT's were my main interest through childhood and still contiune to be my favourite fandom.

HorseTechie 07-23-2003 01:49 PM

:D I is the other who voted for movies!

Yeah.. I saw the cartoon first. My bro insisted I watch it. But unlike his cool experiment of making me like Transformers and Ghostbusters, the TMNT cartoon really didn't make me the fan this time. Nor did the toys.

No... it wasn't until after I saw the first movie in 1990, that I fell in love with the green goobers. Cause after that, I started reading up o the articles abotu the movie, where I learned thay came from a comic book. So I went looking for those comics.. and the rest was history.

Aignatius 07-23-2003 02:13 PM

Comics

For me, it was the original Mirage comics.
Actually, it was because of my daughter who was into the Turtles cartoon that she got me to rent the first TMNT movie, which I just loved, then I happened to catch an interview on 60 Minutes with Kevin and Peter that told me of the origin of the TMNT, that the comics existed, so when I went to visit my brother in NY I went to a local comic shop there and bought about $70 worth of the original comics series to get started on, including the phone book sized collected novel of the first run. Also procured thanks to friends who have had access to plenty of back issues. So, I can say I've read in some form, every TMNT related issue Mirage has published, to date.
Thought, now here's a comic I have always wanted to see. Been hooked on that aspect of TMNT since then.

Misfit 07-23-2003 03:11 PM

*sigh* Okay that's it, I must get my hands on some of those comics. Do you know I've NEVER even seen a TMNT in my life? Isn't that shamefull?

Any idea where I'd be able to find the early ones?

The Bossanova 07-23-2003 07:16 PM

Why, what are you *supposed* to be doing when you're 50? Sit in the den and read the Wall Street Journal and smoke a pipe? Go play bridge or 18 holes of golf on Wednesdays and Saturdays? Heck, chances are better you'll be able to afford all the stuff you'd wanted to get years ago. :tsmile:

Actually I know a couple people who are over 50, one is a grandmother, (though she looks more like she should be on the back of a Harley than be a grandmother) and she is a *big* time Raphael fan-- has been for over 10 years-- collects the comics, has framed TMNT posters and art up all over her house, (rather disconcerting though to have a Raph portrait gazing down at you when you use her bathroom) drives around in a Camaro and just bought a house, she's certainly no loser.
A wealthy friend of hers has a big horse ranch down the road from her, with a swimming pool that has the four ninja turtles in the Eastman/Laird old school style, in colored mosaic tile set in the bottom. Ahm... hey, she's no loser, either. :tangel:

Geez, I'm chatty tonight...

Hmm... I've never seen a TMNT in my life, either. Sure would like to, though-- Wait, did you mean the TMNT comic?

Eesh, I'd try the bigger comic stores in your area, and if there are none, then you could haunt ebay for any back issues for sale... otherwise, not sure what else to do about that. Others could answer that better than I can.

I am with cbq....
but I think what got me hooked onthge originalcartoon is the fact that I had a turtle when I was younger, so I really liked turtles, and ithought they were cute, and then I "met" shredder and my 11 year old self was smitten.

Raijin Z 07-24-2003 03:15 PM

Original cartoon. By the time I had access to the original comics, I could do better myself. =_= Still, I have a lot of fond memories of the original show, the first NES game, the deal at Burger King that tied in with the first movie in the spring of 1990... Then Peter Chung had to RUIN the show by adding all that super-mutation ********. u_u;;

Ah... Never mind. ;p

robot717 07-25-2003 09:31 AM

None of the above.I got hooked when I purchased the Archie comic adaptation of the first cartoon miniseries.

Ninjatron 07-25-2003 04:14 PM

It wasn't even the original cartoon. It was what happened just before I saw the very first airing of the very first episode.

That's when I heard "And now stay tuned for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!"

That's when I became a fan. Seeing the following piece of animation only reafirmed it for me.

Sayonara.

redsai4lex 07-25-2003 06:34 PM

i grew up w/ the original cartoon

DarkNinja 07-25-2003 09:17 PM

My story:

Okay, I was really little when the original cartoon aired on CBS, but I still remember I used to watch it every now and then. I guess you wouldn't call me a fan then, but I watched it and have a few TMNT mementos from that time period. When The Next Mutation came on Fox, it became my favorite show compared to some of the other freaky shows that aired. Does anyone remember when the Ninja Turtles teamed up with the Power Rangers  ? NEwayz, after that went off I kind of forgot about the TMNT until the new cartoon came along, and became, should I say addicted? :D

damnhooligan 07-25-2003 10:56 PM

Got hooked on the original series first, then when I was a good bit older, the comics, and only just recently, I'm now hooked on the new series.

~Is it airing in Germany now? Too cool!

The original cartoon got my attention cuz my kids were so into it, and being the indulgent sort of Mom I am, they got a lot of the toys and stuff they wanted. It was the first movie that really got my attention, though. I guess since we ended up seeing in the theater something like 10 times altogether I was certainly in the "fan" category by then.
But the real hook was when I discovered the Mirage books. I read through the entire collected works of Vol. 1, in one night and by morning I was reborn and baptized in the green ooze of terminal fandom....
Writing three novel-length TMNT fanfics certainly helped, too; reinforced my own addiction!
:tparty:
Woo-hoooo!
