The Cartoons, and subsequent Cinematic Legacies

Think about it, the level of popularity of each animated series is exemplified in their big screen legacy.

The Wolf Toon's popularity inspired 3x insanely popular live action 90's films.
The 2k3 series popularity led to luke warm, animated 2007 film.

And now the Nick Toon's popularity inspired a new, big budget, live action reboot. Is there potential here for the Nick Toon to have inspired a better cinematic legacy than even the Wolf Toon? I'm sure this reboot will outperform the 90's films box office wise. Quality wise it will probably trump all the previous films apart from the 1990 original.

How many decent quality films produced by PD can we as fans potentially expect? I feel TMNT is inherently stronger material than Transformers, and even has a stronger mass, and niche appeal. Could we see 4 films from this new branch of the franchise?

Refractive Reflections 06-15-2014 03:32 AM

If the franchise maintains its current momentum, and the first film isn't a box office bomb, we could probably expect two more films for a trilogy.

The only thing I would question would be the degree of success these PD films and the Nick series contribute to the franchise when compared to Turtlemania, after inflation-adjustment, because TMNT still hasn't made quite the impact onto the adult mainstream yet that Turtlemania did in the past. This movie is its big chance to either succeed or fail in doing so.

I'm predicting it will be successful since most Bay-associated films are, but the fact that so many aspects of the film (from what we've seen) has been taken to extremes (extreme strength, extreme visual stereotyping, etc.), it won't be met with any type of critical respect by movie critics, reinforcing the stereotypical notion amongst the general public that TMNT is for the "comic nerd demographic and young kids".

Personally I thought "30 years" may have been more of the inspiration. When did they start the initial pre-production of this vs when the new Nick series started?

Not true. This movie was put into production immediately after the Nickelodeon purchase just like the new cartoon.

Leolead 06-15-2014 03:22 PM

Anyone notice the turtles have similar skin tones to the nick show?.

I am sooo glad you said that.. Bc I agree 100%. I believe that TMNT, at the end of this "trilogy" has the potential to out perform the Transformers series. I definitely can see us getting 4 TMNT films and just the thought of it makes me very... VERY excited.
I actually hope Bay takes over for TMNT 2. He's rumored to be leaving the Transformers franchise.. So I hope he makes TMNT his #1 priority :D

Well I think Nick knew what they were doing and that these two projects were mutually exclusive. It's obvious that the film has taken some inspiration from the cartoon and will feed off of some of it's success. Yes it was put into production but the cartoon still had two years to build popularity for the franchise.. which would obviously help the film when it came to pulling in a new generation of kids. So in a way.. it is true imo

The film we are getting in August is a completely different film from what Peter Laired and John Fusco were planning..

DevilSpooky 06-15-2014 06:46 PM

Unless this movie does really good money I don't see them making anymore movies anytime soon, and who can blame them? Ever since they announced this everyone is just complaining and whinning about it so why bother?

Imo.. A small vocal minority are complaining.. and that minority will get smaller and smaller as they market this film and release better trailers like the one we just saw. Trust me I see WAY more people excited for this on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.. Even this site where it seems that most people are negative.. look at the poll.. BY FAR most people will be there in the theatres to see it.. even on opening night.. I just think that the negative folks are more consistent in stating their opinions than someone excited to see it.. They usually just say " YES!!! im so going to see this" and then move on. Others that hate it on forums and social media? Will state their reasons over and over and over again. It's just the way it is imo.

Well, a shirking amount of complaints I feel may also be in large part to people simply settling down with their criticism after having this long at this point to deal with it.

Had I ended up on here sooner I'd have prob had more of my own say (and made a more negative first impression lol), esp with reading over all the threads and posts I was lurking on. But it took a number of days for my account to get accepted and really it was probably for the best. My opinion has not changed, but the wait gave my feelings over what I don't like time to cool off first. I imagine I'm not the only one who has calmed down by now, even if I still have the same complaint.

Don't get me wrong.. some complaints are totally justified.. but context makes a big difference depending on the complaint. That's all I'm really saying.

I wonder why it took so long for your account to be accepted?
Did it really take day?

Dunno, five days. Even though a message said to contact if it wasn't within 48 hours and I didn't bother. Challenge my patience... challenge accepted, beginners stuff.

There hasn't been any communication between the fanbase and the studios, there has been no announcements and no use of social media to actually promote this film. I bet the complaints and whines are falling on deaf ears.

Radical Raph 06-16-2014 10:03 AM

I would be really upset if we finally get a good turtles movie and nobody goes to see it so there aren't any sequels.

I hope the people prejudging the movie will at least give it a shot.

A lot of casual fans will watch something and say, "this looks stupid" and forget about it with no intention of seeing it or just simply ignore it altogether, too. This is site is not an accurate representation of the public. We'll see how it does at the box office after the reviews come in most of the other big name movies have already been out for weeks. I've never said for sure that it's going to bomb, but I think it's got a lot working against it almost regardless of the actual quality.

It won't be a good movie so you don't have much to worry about.

As for a the other post it won't just be casual fans thinking it looks stupid and skip it. It will also be the more serious hardcore fans and people that roughly remember the old cartoon that will also think it's stupid.

Because it is stupid. This movie is the equivalent of having batman and the joker fight it out in batman/joker inspired mechs.... And make it look like that's the way it always should have been.

CyberCubed 06-16-2014 05:59 PM

Why would anyone want a trilogy of this god awful movie? Let this movie bomb and be buried like Next Mutation.

Agreed. The longer it takes to end this travesty, the longer it will take to make a proper reboot. Just imagine if Joel Schumaker made more Batman movies. We never would have gotten the Nolan trilogy.

I dunno, if it was a different team of people, as one would assume, heck, they could start writing it tomorrow. (Now if that conflicts with who's allowed to do what when with this franchise, uh..)

It's no different than you having the 2014 movie listed as your favorite movie in your signature.

But I'm not the one saying this movie is already great or awful. There's no way you can judge the whole movie before you've seen it!

I hate every single Theatrical TMNT Movie, (technically I should change my signature to Turtles Forever) and I prefer that one-minute trailer to anything we got before so of course I'm gonna put it down as my favourite.

Difference is I have an actual reason instead of 'OMG Megan Fox, she's terrible in every movie before this and that one character is totally gonna bring the whole thing down.' Or 'Michael Bay? Jonathan Liebsman? That's it. Movie sucks!' Cause as we all know EVERY Director is either good or bad. There are no intermediates and they have no potential whatsoever!

So your reason for liking it is "I hate everything else so this has to be the best by default." whereas people that use the reputations of those involved in the production to predict the quality of the new movie are completely off base. Interesting.

And there couldn't be people that watch that same one minute trailer and feel the opposite of what you do, right?

Difference is those people are comparing the previous 90-Minute Films to these one-minute trailers and even worst...concept arts.

I'm saying IMO that one-minute trailer was more enjoyable than the entirety of the previous films. I'm not saying the movie's gonna be great, but it's a more valid reasoning than comparing 90-minute movies to this one-minute trailer!

Agreed again.. Directors can get worse and get better and it is all in the eye of the beholder.
I like Liebesman's style. I love Bay's over the top action "lets have a great time" style of making films. From what I've seen so far "esp. from that last trailer" I am actually pleasantly surprised. I think there was a lot of personal passion behind this film with some of the people involved. Just around the corner my friend.. Hope we get the 2:24 trailer this week :D

... not this again. Disliking Fox's casting because she has not turned in good performances in the past is a perfectly valid reason. If she pulls a decent performance out of her butt in this movie, then I won't have an issue with her casting anymore. At this point in time, I still have an issue because until I have been shown otherwise, her casting has been based on marketing rather than ability. It's great to keep an open mind and give someone the benefit of the doubt, but it's unrealistic to expect people to go through life not judging anyone based on their previous work.

It'd be like expecting the next Nickelback album not to suck.

Judging a movie BEFORE it comes out

and yes you saying this movie will be your fave movie of 2014 falls under the same logic than those saying this movie is bad BEFORE they even see it

I said my favourite TMNT Movie is the 2014 version, not my favourite movie in general!

If you actually payed attention, you'd notice those were all TMNT-related posts on my signature.

Coola Yagami 06-16-2014 07:34 PM

Who says I'm judging this by directors or actors. Im basing this on the fact that I'm a tmnt fan and this sure as hell isn't tmnt anymore than Legend of Chun Li was Street Fighter or Dragonball Evolution is DBZ.

I understand you love the turtles. I understand you wish this movie would succeed. But stop being blind and see the movie for what it is. A horrible case of fixing what isn't broken mixed with making things extreme for the sake of making them extreme.

Years from now whenever we get a GOOD tmnt movie done right people are gonna look back and wonder what the hell you guys were smoking when you defended this crap so faithfully. Might as well say Batman and Robin was a masterpiece that blows The Dark Knight out of the water.

It's a completely different situation. They already hate the movie for not living up to something that has a running time of over 90 MINUTES! That seems a bit presumptuous IMO.

I'm not saying this is a good movie, I just prefer that one-minute trailer to everything we have in the past.

I don't hate the movie. I just don't like much of what I've seen so far or much of what the people who made the movie have done before, so my interest in seeing it has been declining for months.
