Did the backlash cause them to backtrack on aliens Turtles and white Shredder?

Does anyone else think the fandom backlash actually made a difference this time?

The Turtles were clearly planned to be aliens from the beginning, as seen in the original scripts and Bay's comments, where the Turtles were actually from an alien Turtle race. But thankfully that alien angle seems to have been dropped, (or so we hope).

Then we had white Eric Sachs announced to be Shredder, and now all of a sudden we have indication that Sachs isn't Shredder after all, and that Asian Oroku Saki is indeed in the film. White Shredder caused almost as big a backlash as alien Turtles, and it was reversed.

Now obviously stuff like Megan Fox April didn't cause as much an uproar and it was probably too late to recast her role. The only other backlash is against the nostrils and humanoid faces for the Turtles, but the CG was probably too far in production to change it. So do you think fandom backlash made a difference?

If this is the case, its proof internet uproar can sometimes makes a change and cause studio execs to backtrack. Never doubt the power of online message board ranting!

without a doubt, I think the fans put a hell of a dent in this movie's production

Jester 07-18-2014 11:42 PM

Yes...Cubed it was all you. Pat yourself on the back.

Gimme_Three 07-18-2014 11:43 PM

absolutely and thankfully they went back to the drawing board and changed it.

Now, wasn't Kevin Eastman hired as a consultant for the movie? If the studio is starting to have doubts of the production due to some of the fans distaste, doesn't that make Eastman look kind of bad? Like, he really doesn't know what clicks and doesn't click with the fans, of a property he helped create nonetheless?

Yeahhhh....that's not true. At least for me anyway. My problem with the designs isn't the fact that they have nostrils, because that makes sense. My problem is all the unnecessary stuff they put on them, when the simple bandanna, knee and elbow pads would have worked fine, as well as making them so large and bulletproof.

I will admit though, Leo is the best looking Turtle out of the four. If face wise Donnie, Mikey, and Raph looked like Leo, and they got rid of some stuff they had on, I'd be more open to the movie and the designs.

Hey, the cat sent like a billion emails asking for a couple episodes of the OT, once upon a time, didn't he? At some point, I could actually see a network or studio saying, "Fine, FINE, whatever, do whatever, just get RID of that guy!"

This yes THis was changed but this was change so early in production(comparatively) that it doesn't matter

No this was not changed they filmed this whole movie Last Year in full Minus Two months worth of Reshoots, Which were mostly caused by Megan fox and her pregnancy,

Shredder is and has been whats in the movie Since before they filmed, You think the Fans had a hand is shredder you just try to justify Why you feel for the whole thing I will say this the misdirection they were going for was changed because of fans IE the decided not to keep the new shredder(Japanese actor) a secret, because fans were impatient, and could not wait till the movie released to find out.

Those who think other wise are just lying to themselves,

Adding a whole new character with a whole new story arc Isn't as easy
Most certainly could not have been done in two month worth of reshoots.

Sorry its not Likely alot of fan outcry can do more harm them good, Masseffect anyone

graphic_content 07-19-2014 12:24 AM

as much as we think studios like to check these boards, my guess is, nobody with any money/creative pull does. and by extension, they will do what they think is 1) in the best interest of the property (assuming they are actually fans, and 2) what will net the most profit (sometimes that means staying true to the property, other times it may mean deviating from it entirely)

sorry 'Cubed, we all have opinions here, but i doubt anyone outside these forums care what we all think.

Where have you hears this? Fans didn't hate the revised endings they hated the originals that's why there was out cry

Bioware went back and added more finalized endings...again did you actually play them or are you just going off what you heard.

The only current "controversy" is which ending is the real one

Ive played all of them but never finished the 3rd

http://kotaku.com/5898743/mass-effect-3s-ending-disrespects-its-most-invested-players

Ive heard it From tons of different people From several different Game sites i fallow, and different video game developments constantly bring up the ending.

Sachs was never supposed to be the Shredder, this was just a marketing thing similar to the the last Star Trek film. No whiny fanboy idiot caused the studio to "backtrack" on anything.

Agree. They're on tight budget, ain't nobody got the time and money to waste on re-doing the story and scenes. ;)

CyberCubed 07-19-2014 09:04 AM

William Fitcher seemed to think he was playing Shredder.

Please. No studio in their right mind is going to mislead their potential audience about something that would cause negative feedback and harm the financial return. Sachs was definitely Shredder when they started filming and probably still is at some point in the movie.

Sachs better never wear the Shredder armor in the film.

Powder 07-19-2014 09:22 AM

In the Visual History book he talked about having a stunt double, so there was definitely some shreddin' going on at some point. Or something.

Walkabout 07-19-2014 09:32 AM

I believer they have done some damage control for sure, I have no idea if they have written Saki into it to appease fans but it's just re arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic as far as I'm concerned.

If fan outrage had any weight, they'd have scuppered the whole damn movie.

Marketing?

I remember back when the initial aliens controversy kicked off I speculated that the whole thing was a publlicity stunt to get people talking about the movie, I even said so on here more than once however it soon became clear it really was their intention.

After that I think even the dumbest person involved in making this would come up with a story that would so blatantly piss fans off. That's just a terrible way to promote a movie which has by their own admission picked up a bad reputation as a disaster waiting to happen.

The sad part is that it's not an outlandish suggestion that they really are that dumb but if they were inclined to do that then why come clean now and not months ago?

It's happened many times in movies before. Do you not think Transformers 2 didn't shoot things multiple times since they were writing the script as they were shooting. This isn't the norm when making a movie but isn't unheard of.

Tell that to Megan Fox and Fichtner himself who have publicaly said more than once that changes were being made and thought up all the time even while they were shooting based on fan response.

Is it really out of the question to suggest that one day someone says "hey y'know how these fans are upset about that Saki guy not being Shredder, how about we add a scene or two were which shows he was a Shredder before do you think we can whip up something like that up for next week or two?"

Is it even more out of the question they later decided to just make Saki the Shredder given they've recast two main roles anyway?

Chris_a_Bunga 07-19-2014 09:41 AM

I think it was probably just like this from the start, but fan outcry led them to reveal things now to insure people go see it because we need everything spoiled for us before we go. I def think they were trying to pull a fast one on us for Shredder, but the world couldn't handle it, and that's fine haha because their shouldn't be any secrets with that character.

I think Michael Bay's alien comments were just stupid on his part, it's clear he is in things just for the action and money, not story, even when the story is laid out for them already. Anyone else remember that thing he was on where he was just clearly going to talk about his own work and he got flustered and walked off stage...yeah, dude doesn't even know what he's talking about unless someone is telling him what to say.

After reading that interview with the director it seems like he knows what he is talking about. Maybe they tweaked it a bit based on fan backlash, but they have the turtles FREAKING BULLET PROOF AND BIGGER THAN THE PEOPLE...OBVIOUSLY JUST TO TAKE ON A HUGE SHREDDER SUIT, but aside from that what do the turtles have to fear? it looks like tasers. Plus they are way too overdone and ugly.. Now, I am not against this movie fully, I am going to see it opening weekend for sure. But, no, I really don't they changed much of anything due to fan backlash.. :ohwell:

to add to this sometimes changes happen not even do to any outcry, it could be because they don't like how it transitions from paper to film or location isnt ideal to they rework it

Yep, it most certainly does. The first Spider-Man definitely had to redo a scene, the scene that was originally going to be the helicopter caught in a web spun within the World Trade Center, but then 9/11 came and they took that whole scene out.

So yes, reconstructing certain scenes or storylines in a movie does happen, sometimes it's because an unfortunate event happened, such as 9/11, and actor or another crew member dies during the set, (I'm sure Mockingjay is going to have to get creative now that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is gone) or, like in Waterworld, while filming, directors and creators just didn't like the way the movie was going, so there was a drastic change in the script, while in midshooting. And sadly, this is probably what made Waterworld at the time the most expensive movie in production history.

Look, no matter how you dice this, it's obvious that the studio is definitely on panic mode with the TMNT. If they weren't, they wouldn't have all of a sudden booted out unknown actors that were just fine in their roles as is, and replace them with slightly bigger names. They panicked over something, that's for damn sure. Whose to say that the voice changes was the only thing they panicked on?

I would like to note that bay is notorious for causing misdirection. This was a big deal with Transforms 2, Bay at the beginning of pre production noted how he would put out false information to get people talking.

In the case of the Turtles being alien, I think that statement was HEAVILY taken out of context. The mutegen is of alien origin, but if the blue door script was the real one before any of this then I'm completely wrong.

In any case, theres to many contradicting statements from people on this film. Is Fincher telling the truth? Or is is the producer? Once we see the movie many of these weird pieces may fit into place. Sachs is an original character, and I'm just as confused about who he is when they first announced him.

CyberCubed 07-19-2014 01:22 PM

They were planned to be aliens because in the script a 5th turtle appeared from another planet saying he was from their home world.

samxsteal 07-19-2014 03:27 PM

They They did not Re work the whole Movie changing character adding actors and reshooting Scene IN two months. Minor Scenes Maybe But entire major plot points integral to the story as a whole, Its just not possible.

Just gets me to thinking though...

If Blue Door was legit, who leaked it. Nondisclosure contracts and all, I'm sure we'd never know, but makes me wonder if someone - the one sane person - saw it and went "oh hell no." Or could it have been a fake leak? To, as you say, get people talking. (If that were the case though I find that trolling-like tactic rather distasteful.)

I remember when that thing came out. I don't think anyone knew who leaked it, but it all seemed like a genuine script. I don't think someone would've made a fake code name for a fake script.

EDIT: It's dated a couple months before Bay said the alien thing, and seems to be a similar style to other Appelbaum & Nemec writing.

Dude, yes it is, some entire films shoot in two or three months. Not big ones, usually, but it happens and is possible. Even without that kind of compressed time-frame, the fact remains that some movies are constantly being reworked all the way up until the last minute. Wanna give yourself an ulcer? Read about how they slapped together "Alien 3". That movie not only had no script before they started filming it, but the studio themselves were moving pieces around and ordering re-shoots, changing the story and other stuff, months after the film was ostensibly in the can and "finished". Even the people who worked on the damn thing didn't recognize it when they saw the final product.

In this case, is it unlikely? Probably. Impossible? Nope, not at all. To swap Shredder for Sachs in the storyline, for example, could actually be fairly easy depending on the kind of footage they had to work with. Creative editing, less than a weekend's worth of new footage, and some new dialogue, and you've got a whole new movie. Do I think that's what they did? I don't know. Could I see them doing it? Well, yeah, people do it all the time. I think it's kind of a stretch, but who knows?

It was actually great to watch the doco for Alien 3 and see how screwed the whole production process was, how much studio interference hampered the whole process and how Fincher basically got screwed the entire way through the project. Not to mention all of the work that Geiger put into creature designs that never got used... and some of the early script ideas were Blue Door level terrible. The entire production was just a total clusterf*ck.
