What if Casey Jones is black in the sequel?

Given this movie almost changed Shredder to a white man, and Marvel movies like Avengers changing Nick Fury to Samuel L Jackson, or the Human Torch from the new rebooted Fantastic Four turned into black instead of his white self that he's been for 70 years...its possible.

What if Casey Jones was cast as a black actor? Is the world ready for a black Casey Jones?

Honestly Casey being black would fit his character, and while I am not a fan of race changes to established characters, this wouldn't bother me nearly as much as Shredder being white, (obviously the Foot are from Japan, Shredder needs to be Asian and has an Asian name)

Ramboraph4life aka Matt 08-10-2014 08:49 PM

Would it be a good actor (for example, I enjoy Michael B. Jordan who was in Chronicle, and I enjoyed Anthony Mackie in Captain America: The Winter Soldier)? Or would it be some bad actor shoe-horned like the RZA or 50 Cent or such...

If it was a good actor, then yeah I'd be fine.

Warhorse 08-10-2014 08:50 PM

Wouldn't bother me none. I once had a thought where he was a black man, and he had a daughter that was about 10, and she would be Angel, played by a black girl. TMNT seems to miss the boat when it comes to minorities sometimes.

I don't see where you get that since Baxter is black in every incarnation but one, and Bebop is black.

Powder 08-10-2014 08:54 PM

As long as race isn't relevant to the character, I'm open to any changes.

I'm kinda surprised Casey being black hasn't been thought of before. It actually fits his character surprisingly well.

Raphies 08-10-2014 08:56 PM

I wouldn't care at all, as long as his personality would be intact.

NinjaPug 08-10-2014 08:56 PM

Just give me a Casey Jones character that is well written that is portrayed by a good actor. I don't care about his skin color at all.

sdp 08-10-2014 08:57 PM

As a kid growing up in the early 90s when every race had to be accounted for like in the BK Kids club/Captain Planet etc. I've always liked race variety but I hate it when they change the race of established characters; even when it works really well like Kingpin in Daredevil or Perry in MoS, it still bothers me that they changed the race. I'm ok when they make new characters of different race though like Jon Stewart being GL since it's a new GL and not Hal Jordan.

I guess Casey Jones being black would be ok for the character and it could work, but it would still bother me. But I'd prefer a new black vigilante taking Casey jone's role instead of a race change. This movie already messed up Thompson by making him a woman and black. I think I'd actually be more ok with April being black counting in the original comics she was likely meant to be black.

Powder 08-10-2014 08:58 PM

More than anything I think the turtles should be more racially diverse. NYC is a total melting pot, it'd be dope to have like a puerto rican Mikey, black Raph, asian Leo, & white Donnie. At least I think so. Ya know, with respect to voice actors & whatnot.

sdp 08-10-2014 09:00 PM

That's a terrible idea that doesn't even make sense, they are turtles, not humans.

Right, they are turtles...not humans. That means they can sound like anybody since they have No Actual/Exact Race. So why would they have the voice of a 'white/Caucasian' when, like you said, they are Turtles...they can sound like anybody.

You could easily ask 'why does Mikey sound more Surfer-like in some incarnations, f he lives in New York'

Purse Grabbin Puke 08-10-2014 09:08 PM

I already stated Casey could be black in the sequel in one of the other Casey Jones threads.

Who cares about race anymore. Only racists care. I was hoping April was Zoe Saldana when the movie was announced.

I don't know if these guys who are in Marvel movies are allowed to cross over into other super hero movies. Anthony Mackie is a good choice, but I doubt he can be Falcon and Casey.

I think Common could pull it off. Mos Def, Michael K. Williams, but he's too old. They should get a no name for Casey.

I just have this sickening feeling we're going to get Brian Austin Green...

Electric 08-10-2014 09:09 PM

i wouldnt mind, as long as casey is well written. i like very few versions of him, so if black casey could be enjoyable sure.

my only vote against it is people bitching about it. when people thought shredder was white there was a rampage. if black casey was released, i could see the same thing happening

Because if they're going to just put a white American Ninja guy in there...it should only be this guy:

I can see this thread spiraling out of control...

My thoughts on this. I don't really care all that much about Casey. Only one I have liked is from the first movie. So whatever. But, I don't think a characters race should be changed.

IndigoErth 08-10-2014 09:15 PM

Best audition should get the gig. Just please... no need for screwing with names for stupid reasons.

Although a name like Casey could also be a girl... wouldn't that be something. lol

But there's no way of portraying those races in turtles without seeming racist to the oversensitive types. They'd all have to have stereotypical accents and walk around with flags on their shells or some sh*t. And what would it bring it to their characters besides their voices, anyway?

I'm not saying it can't work, but it's a fine line, I think.

That'd be cool as long as he can pull off a good Casey.

The only thing that gets arrested quicker than a vigilante that beats on people with baseball bats is a black vigilante that beats on people with baseball bats

That said, I don't really care what ethnicity any of the characters are as long as they are good actors

And the villain too! That's the problem, minorities tend to be in movies to be either A-the villain, or in B-the token black guy who will be the first to die. The TMNT is one of the worst offenders. And have they ever had a black female in there yet?

Ramboraph4life aka Matt 08-10-2014 09:25 PM

I could see some people reacting just like this:

 That's actually an interesting point. Especially for a story set in NYC. Forget arrested, he'd be shot to Swiss cheese as soon as he so much as reached for a baseball bat, if the cops saw him.

April in Mirage was originally black I believe.

I've heard speculation, but there is no concrete evidence.

CyberCubed 08-10-2014 09:49 PM

How does Casey being black not fit his character?

A guy who means well and wants to clean up his neighborhood of street gangs and petty thugs? And does after them wearing a mask and hitting them with baseball bats and hockey sticks?

I'm sure they made some kind of a movie where a black guy does something similar. Probably one of those movies that casts rappers as stars or something.

Leo656 08-10-2014 09:50 PM

Your lack of self-awareness is wonderful.

What?

How exactly does that make him "black"?

Let's not have another Bebop debate again.

Well, other than the mask...

I have to agree. Remember that despite being New Yorkers they are also all Turtles raised by the same parent. THAT'S what would inform their personalities. If anything they'd all be different stripes of 2nd generation Japanese raised by an immigrant from Japan.

To the point of Casey....sure. All I care about is if the actor can do the job and if they can BE Casey, and Casey's a crazy vigilante armed with sports equipment...could be any race, really.

Powder 08-10-2014 10:35 PM

You're both right I suppose, but there's also the fact that Mikey always sounds decidedly west-coast. & one could argue that's due to him hearing that sort of thing all the time, maybe in his favorite movies, so their surroundings & pop culture exposure would influence their upbringing. Yeah, more than anything it makes sense they'd sound semi-Japanese, having been raised by Splinter, but I don't think it'd be ridiculous for them to sound like any other kinda folk in the city, considering they'd be hearing it through the gutter every day.

Shark_Blade 08-10-2014 10:42 PM

So at first you rant about "whitewashed" Shredder, and now you want a "blackwashed" Casey..

Makes sense. Not.

Maybe they could use an amalgamation of different slang to kind of play to the melting pot of NY...but it'd be hard to do that without delving into stereotypes.

There's a scale....Shredder started as a minority and was turned white. Shredder's nationality is key to his character. Casey started out as "base wasp" (for lack of a better term). His being white doesn't change or inform his character....he just happens to be white. Making him another nationality doesn't take from his character, where as taking Shredder's nationality does.

Coola Yagami 08-10-2014 11:47 PM

Why do some [people act like it was awesome to have Falcon as a black dude in the Cap America movie.... if Falcon was always black anyway?

As for Casey... whatever. This movie is damaged beyond repair. Sequels would only make it worse. I could care less if Vernon got hit by Mutagen and turned into Casey. Whatever. I give up on this new movie TMNT 'franchise'.

Werecat 08-10-2014 11:49 PM

Casey Jones wouldn't be the best candidate to race change. You might face racist claims because you are demonstrating that only black people are deranged and angry while white men aren't. Well you would get that if you have good interpretation skeels. If you had poor interpretation skeels the indirect insult would go over your head.

Midnight Mutant 08-11-2014 01:07 AM

Considering that April's race has changed and so has Baxter's, It wouldn't bother me.

I don't consider Eric Sacks being Shredder as changing the Shredders race because he wasn't and wouldn't be the true Shredder, just A Shredder.

Now, had William been playing Oroku Saki, I'd consider it a race change.
