What's your opinion on the Next Mutation villains?
How do you feel about the NM version of Shredder and the others? Personally it feels like Shredder was made into a joke. He gets beaten in the second episode and reduced to a crazy hobo in a later one.
Dragon Lord is okay, but he reminds me of Lord Dregg for some reason. |
Everything was cheesy is that Tv show. Shredder looked like a bad cosplay and Dragon Lord had a good design but the costume sucks.
http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2...3e/Prodrag.gif yet he looked good on paper... |
amazing
I loved them all. Shredder was pretty bad though, but he didn't have that big of a part. Dragon lord was awesome looking. Loved Silver I think he can be a prominent villain in any iteration. Simon bonesteel was great, the vampires were great, Dr. quease was basically their version of baxter stockman and I enjoyed him as well. Really good villains. Most people just hate on it to fit in. :trolleye:

they were cheesy (not always a bad thing) and mostly bad but a few had their good points... Bonesteel was an idiot but had some funny one liners... dragon lord was good from what i remember and the Rank filled the shoes of the foot well enough... the rest i remember not liking big aspects of them or are unmemorable...
for the record i didn't mind a lot of aspects of the next mutation and as a whole like the show so no i am not just hating. |

Outside of Bonesteel, they were all subpar. The Dragon Lord and his Minions were lame stand-ins for The Shredder and The Foot. Dr. Quease was a discount Baxter Stockman. As for Va-MI and Silver, they felt completely out of place in a Ninja Turtles show.
|
The NM villains was interesting and have great potential. I wouldn't mind for them to return, either in IDW or the new cartoon.
|
I like them. Shredder was pretty lame but the rest are decent villains.
|
Wait, there were villains in this...? :P
Moderately enjoyable if taken as being purposely hokey. |
I liked all the villains just fine. NM, if redone with a better budget and more serious tone, would have worked just fine (obvs the Venus thing would've needed to have been tweaked as well, but nonetheless).
The villains themselves have great promise in the right hands, and I felt that doing an episode where Shredder has lost everything and struggles to find redemption was a very interesting concept. We're used to Shredder being portrayed as strong, never faltering and 100% focused on conquering his enemies. By the same token, a story about a defeated and disgraced Samurai warlord has a lot to offer, in the right hands. It's a story where you could explore not just Saki, but also whether the Hamato clan could forgive and overcome their own prejudices towards their most bitter enemy - whether they would choose peace, if the opportunity were presented, and break the cycle... or if they'd be unable to move past it. It's a story about whether both sides could give up their vendetta. I think you've got all you need right there for a really good Turtles story. |
I loved Bonesteel, mostly because of Scott McNeil's portrayal of the character, the same with Simon Webb's Dr Quease, they where wasted on the show IMO, Vam-Mi would make a really good villain in a more serious version of the show, she had the potential of being a really dangerous threat to the boys. The rest I could live without, Shredder is a joke, more so then the FW version, and Dragon Lord is what he is, a Power Rangers villain. Silver is... well, something...
|
Aside from maybe Wick, they were the best part of the series.
|
I couldn't stand bonesteel. way too annoying and cheesy. quease was cool though.
|
What's this? A next mutation thread where we're not complaining about the show?

Can we not do this?

Yeah, memes, good contribution. It shouldn't come as a surprise that there are people on a forum dedicated to being obsessed with the TMNT who enjoy The Next Mutation. It'd be great if at least one thread could NOT devolve into bullsh*t like this.
|
Ahem!! Anyways, the Dragons were clearly tougher than the Foot but like all other recurring villains, they got old fast. Vam-mi was cool. :)
|
I loved Next Mutation. Just like I love the first season of Power Rangers, Virtual Reality Troopers, Big Bad Beetle Borgs or Superhuman Samuria Syber-Squad. They may be cheesy but its a good cheesy IMO
As for the OP Ill have to watch the series again. I just got them on dvd and havent seen them since they originally aired way back when. |
I think if the cartoon had been continued into an 11th season and these characters had been used there instead, the writing team would've been able to do some really interesting stuff with them.

I maintain that one day, the Next Mutation universe will be revived. And it will be awesome.
I mean, if the entire thing had been done as a cartoon like, in the 2003 style, I think it would've copped so much less crap. |

I thought Dragon Lord was pretty cool looking, and the costume wasn't that bad. At least his face was articulated, and they didn't go down the Power Rangers rout, i.e. rigid face compensated for by hyper-kinetic gesticulation.
The rest were pretty colourful and interesting, although I though Vam Mi was out of place stylistically, but not problematically so. |
Dragon Lord and the rank had so much potential (Dragon Lord himself even made into into Mirage's image run). Simon Bonesteel is a comedic take on the bounty hunter trope. (In my personal fiction, I always make him part of a trio of bounty hunters, along with Dirk savage and Tiger Claw). Vam mi and Silver have a lot of potential, and just need the right kind of story to work.
Sometimes people let thier hatred of Venus seep over into other elements of the show. |
I believe that they all had potential, but suffered from bad writing, badass decay, and/or cheesy plots.
|
Did it seem out of character for Splinter to be buddy buddy with Shredder near the end of the series? I haven't seen the episode in a while, but I remember Splinter letting Shredder live with them in the sewer.
Btw, isn't Next Mutation Shredder technically 1990 movie Shredder? I assume NM is a "what if" story where Shredder from Secret of the Ooze survived his battle at the dock? |
It's been awhile, but I remember how Venus used her shinobi magic on Shredder/Saki in the second episode, making him see what he had become. So this was Saki without any evil, until that item came along and he became greedy again.

It also bothers me how girly his movements are, damn girl, you're playing a male, can't you try and move a little more manly? Oh well, at least she's hot :P |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yli9u4O3uZQ I notice they changed the intro and its music for Kabillion. What are the chances of Saban continuing the series? Pretty slim? I wonder if Scott McNeil would be too old to be play Bonesteel if they were to bring back the show? |

I liked The Dragon Lord, Bonesteal, Queeze and Silver. Everything else was meh.
I love the fact that Dragon Lord wanted to eat the turtles. I mean Shredder was the guy that said Tonight I dine on Turtle soup But Dragon Lord actually had the gall to straight up try and eat them. |
