Did we ever find out Tiger Claw's backstory?

This is something I just thought of now that Season 3 has concluded, did we ever find out Tiger Claw's backstory? Because I really don't remember.

Did we ever find out how he became a mutant or what his human form looked like? Or who cut off his tail and why Shredder trusts him? I don't think they ever did give him a backstory episode, did they?

Don't worry; it'll be in the same episode where we find out how Raph cracked his plastron. :twink:

I'm pretty sure he's this series' version of Oroku Nagi.

ToTheNines 09-22-2015 01:25 PM

That makes no sense. Saki is this series' version of Oroku Nagi.

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy 09-22-2015 01:32 PM

Oroku Nagi? Who's Oroku Nagi? :tlol:

IndigoErth 09-22-2015 01:32 PM

Think we've only gotten very minimal details. All I recall is that he was supposedly a kid when he was mutated. Don't think they ever went into the how's or why's of that though, nor the missing tail.

Oroku Nagi was first introduced in the Mirage Comic. He was the older brother of Oroku Saki. Nagi was the one who loved Tang Shen aside from Yoshi, and he couldn't accept that she had chosen Yoshi as her husband. So one night he breaks into Yoshi's house and beats her until Yoshi arrives and kills him. And since killing a member of ones own clan was cause for banishment. Yoshi and Shen travel to New York and start a new life there. Saki follows them to New York years later and kills Yoshi and Shen to avenge his brothers murder.

According to Rahzar in Wormquake. Tiger Claw had been mutated by the Kraang decades ago.

And when Karai asked him about his tail...Tiger Claw says "I lost my tail in a duel against an adversary, whom he hopes to find one day and slay."

I thought it was interesting that during the vision quest Donnie was put against Tiger Claw rather then Stockmen. And also Donnie is the only Turtle that Tiger Claw never encountered initially. He knew Donatello existed and he lumps him in with his brothers because well he's a Turtle. But I often wondered why the writers and the production team, wanted to play things out in that fashion.

Donnie tends to excel in situations that deal with diplomacy more then situations that require brute force. So it is surmise-able that if Donnie was abducted by the Foot Clan, he would try to reach his enemy by trying to understand him. Such as asking how he was mutated? why was he mutated? Why is he getting out of being involved with the Shredder?

At first Tiger Claw would be resistant to it and say "Such questions are no business of yours "little one". But after a while he might be more forth coming about his past and why he sides with the Shredder. And maybe the shear fact that someone is seeing him and talking to him as though he were a person and not as a weapon might cause a shift in Tiger Claws mindset.

An excellent recap, milady! But I must confess, however... I was speaking in jest, spinning a web of satire, and basically being my usual tongue-in-cheek self. :tlol:

Kind of a court jester, except usually angrier and growlier. A drunk Scottish court jester, maybe? Or Russian? Hmm... gonna have to work on that persona a little more.

Ninturtle 09-22-2015 02:43 PM

Tiger Claw was a kid mutated by the Kraang and became a circus freak. Eventually he became a criminal and eventually gets employed by Shredder. They mentioned this in his debut episode.
Ciro actually said this at 2013 NYCC , we only know he was a mutant as a kid.

CyberCubed 09-22-2015 03:10 PM

Was any of this ever mentioned in the show at all?

Rahzar said and I quote: "All I know is that he's a deadly assassin. The Kraang mutated him when he was a kid decades ago."

and later on after Karai pointed out that Tiger Claw lacked a tail. Tiger Claw says and again I quote:

"Don't mock me, child! It was a rival who sliced off my tail, one day I will find it and HE WILL pay the price!"

I still look forward to the day we see a film or an animated version of Oroku Nagi.

Unless a series is able to tell the "cycle of vengeance" storyline with any justice or lack of "kid-friendly", I'd rather not see Oroku Nagi. I think he only works best when the Turtles are fighting a pointless battle against Shredder, the fight having started two or three or four lives ago... which honestly, only Mirage has ever done.

But, every other main respected TMNT retelling has done admirably in giving the Saki/Yoshi feud a new spin:

IDW, with reincarnation and the Pantheon
Nick, with Saki stealing Miwa and raising her to hate her biological father
4Kids, with the Shredder actually being a revenge-driven Utrom (controversial, yes, but I loved it)

And yeah, Jester's nowhere near as funny as I am. I mean, he doesn't post anywhere near as often, whereas I post multiple times a day, so even if I'm only funny once a day, I'm still hilarious in terms of quantity versus quality, right? Right? RIGHT?

Put away the rotten vegetables, mates, and save that produce for internet movies reviews, thankyaverymuch. :trazz:

LeotheLateBloomer 09-22-2015 06:59 PM

Actually, I'm saving them for the Half Shell movie next year. Why should Rotten Tomatoes have all the fun?:D

I think the "cycle of vengeance" storyline can be done since Saki's origin in the show really parallels with Karai's. It's more of a complex/mature storyline then too dark and scary for the kids, which they have no problem doing dark but god forbid if they suddenly make this show deeper then Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Respectfully disagree; the Saki/Yoshi clan started with the immediately prior generation: Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi. Yoshi IS Splinter, and Saki IS the only Oroku involved. The Turtles are only one generation removed (Splinter/Yoshi) as opposed to two, and Splinter/Yoshi has never struck back decisively against the Oroku Clan (as in, say, killing the non-existent Nagi).

The cycle of vengeance storyline cannot be adapted properly by Nick because there is no moral grey ground on whether or not Splinter and the Turtles are in the right for fighting the Foot Clan. Same for IDW or 4Kids.

No, in interent debating or whatever when someone doesn't respond back to the other person, the other person often assume that they totally won the argument, but it just really means that the other person not replying don't agree and don't care anymore.

it's just me trying not to be misleading and being friendly. Forum etiquette and all.

We all try to keep it civil. You want to see debate, you should have seen when me and Ms.MarvelDuckie were arguing about the how a mutant turtle would behave normally if it wasn't raise like a human child and how a mutant turtle society would look like that are realistically base on actual turtles. My argument is that a society would be intelligent but alien and counter intuitive to human sensibilities.

I'm pretty sure that we were one post away from flinging feces at each other.

I have zero clue how credible all of this is since I don't see any sources but it's interesting. Hopefully more is known about Tiger Claw in the 2nd half of season 4 after the Turtles go back in time to save the world. I really want Tiger Claw to betray Shredder and either side with the turtles or do his own thing.

I was going to post the same thing. I guess what has me thinking about TC is the fact that he seems awfully dedicated to Shredder. Even when he does unsavory things to others that TC doesn't seem to like all that much. Here are some examples...

First he tells Shredder that the Kraang are hurting humans, or something like that, and Shredder tells him it doesn't matter to him what they do to the humans. TC doesn't seem to like that.

TC also watches Leo fighting "To the death" and states that he fights with honor or something like that and he seems to respect Leo, then he goes off and nearly kills him?

TC fights with Raph and tells him that he needs to control his anger almost sounding like a sensai or someone who is guiding him.

TC is always calling them cubs and it almost sounds like an endearment. I have always thought that at some point he will turn on Shredder and side with the turtles. It would be very cool if the turtles help him find the one who cut off his tail so he would join their side.

I just feel that TC isn't all evil, he just wants revenge and believes that Shredder is the only one who can deliver.

After the finale,
Spoiler:
After his outward shock and horror of what Shredder has done, I just wish he could maintain his memory and kill Shredder without warning, that way the guys don't have to do it.

I just wish they would continue his storyline. I would even take an episode about him if that's what it took, with the turtles by his side preferably.

Luckyday 09-23-2015 08:21 PM

Even though TC is a hired mercenary that doesn't mind breaking a few international laws to keep his employer please, no doubt even he have has his limits.

If he's not going to remember what happen at the end then what else will it take to convince him that Shredder had cross the Moral Event Horizon? Mowing down innocent padawans at the jedi academy?

Like I said, I can see Donnie asking him about his mutation and what led to it. And what is he getting out of working with Shredder.

Tiger Claw might be resistant to it at first and say it's not the business as a cub. But Tiger Claw has been treated like an animal and as a weapon his whole life...perhaps someone seeing him and treating him like a person for once could be the difference here.

neatoman 09-24-2015 02:15 AM

So do you people actually care about Tiger Claw? I don't and I keep forgetting that he's even there, which really says something considering how seems they went out of their way to hype him up.

Yes people do. How can you forget Tiger Claw? He's been in most of the Foot episodes in season 3. Remember the reason why we care is because we never saw Tiger Claw as a human. If they kill him off somehow, we'll never know who he is and the fact that there's a rival that stole his tail. Whenever Tiger Claw's argues with Shredder, he always seems to have a good question and Shredder seems to have a stupid answer. Sounds like he considers quitting the Foot some time soon, like a heel-face turn.

I think part of the reason I keep forgetting about Tiger Claw is that there currently 8 characters who are part of the Foot or at least closely allied with them. Here's the problem, 6 were already well established are part of TMNT lore and Xever was one of the first characters introduced for this series, so already Tiger Claw is the least recognisable.

But the biggest problem might be that he has very little personality to speak of. I can tell you what Xever's personality is, I can tell you what Baxter's personality is, I can tell what Bebop and Rocksteady's personalities are but I'm sure I can really pin Tiger Claw. Look at Bauza's other character on this show, Hun has only had 1 episode of prominence so far but he has a more clear personality and more charisma to boot than Tiger Claw has gotten in 15 or however many episode's he's been in..

ToTheNines 09-26-2015 08:26 PM

Does anyone else hate Tigerclaw's jet pack? I think it makes him completely cheesy.

Its probably because Tiger Claw isn't paired with anyone. Mutant duos are easily to remember like Bebop/Rocksteady or Rahzar/Fishface.

Tiger Claw has no mutant pair, so he's a one off.

I've heard rumors that Tiger Claw is an homage to Boba Fett, that might be why he has a jetpack. I don't hate the jetpack but I agree it's a little too much.

Well the problem with that argument is that a bunch of other characters dont really have partners and I still find them to be more interesting than Tiger Claw.

newhire13 09-27-2015 06:18 AM

A Tiger Claw vs Shredder fight would be awesome, but Shredder would win. Tiger Claw can barely hang against Splinter and Shredder and Splinter are pretty evenly matched.

He doesn't really need to be paired with another mutant. Maybe some interaction between the other mutants would be nice but I think he works better as a lone wolf.

I like the concept of TigerClaw but there's not much to his character besides his doubts towards the Shredder. This show really needs to explore this character. Though since most of season four will focus on space, they probably won't get to his backstory until near the end of this season or most likely season five.

We don't even get much personality or any backstory from Rahzar and this is the most personality he's had. I'm honestly hoping they don't incorporate Tokka for the sake of nostalgia because then that'll add one more character to develop.

The funny thing is.... you seen the same episodes we have.... you don't know any more or less than the rest of us do. So... unless there's some super rare cancelled/banned/exclusive episode all about Tiger Claw's story... then you pretty much know the answer to your question.

Unless he thought that he must have forgotten something or there's the chance that Ciro and Brandon already gave away his backstory.

Tiger Claw

First off I loved Tiger Claw showing some character in the season finale! He even asked Shredder what he had done at the end. That was cool! I can see Tiger Claw becoming a bigger player and gaining fans if the writers at Nick decide to stick with this side of the character. He would still be a baddie of course but just not a total mindless follower.
Secondly, is Tiger Claw the same character as "Old Hob", from the comics like a remake or something? Or maybe Old Hob is just inspiration for the Tiger Claw character? I'd be interested to hear some of your thoughts!

Powder 09-29-2015 12:44 AM

Tiger Claw & Old Hob have absolutely nothing to do with each other. TC was Ciro's TMNT OC from childhood that he carried over into the actual series, if memory serves correctly, & OH is someone Kevin & Tom at IDW dreamed up.
