Do you like "Turtles in Space" stories in the comics/cartoons?
 

One aspect of TMNT that they always do is the Turtles always travel through space and/or Dimension X in every series.



1. Mirage started it off with the Triceraton/Utrom/Fugitoid arc in #5-7 and that's where all the other series based their own Turtles in space stories from. The Turtles also revisit space in Volume 4, Tales and tons of other issues.

2. The original cartoon had the Turtles travel to Dimension X and alien planets countless times in all the various episodes. They met the Neutrinos, alien Turtle planets, tons of different alien races, Lord Dregg tried to conquer the Earth, etc.

3. The 4kids series adapted Mirage's Turtles in Space arc, and went further with it with the Battle Nexus, Triceratons invading Earth, Fast Forward sci-fi adventures, etc.

4. Archie TMNT had the Turtles travel through Dimension X to fight on Stump Asteroid, had the evil alien Malinga bug queen try to conquer Earth, and other alien/space adventures around the middle.

5. IDW TMNT had the Turtles visit Dimension X, and there's bound to be more space stuff once the Triceratons and Utroms are more explored.

6. Nick is about to start their 13-episode Turtles in Space arc in Season 4, and they also already visited Dimension X in Season 2-3.


Outside of the movies, the Turtles always travel through space on adventures in every series. Do you like this sci-fi break from all the Foot Ninja, mutants, and mobsters from most of the series?

I think TMNT works best when the sci-fi is in balance with the street-level.

Some of their sci-fi is great, but I think the sci-fi half of the franchise is more likely to run into tedium or poor storytelling than the street-level.

Tales Volume 2 and Volume 4 for examples. Volume 4 had some GREAT concepts and ideas, but poor storytelling choked a lot of it out.

And Tales Volume 2 never got to finish any of its street-level story arcs (Mistress, Mystics, Gang War) because too many sci-fi tales crowded it out.

But the Utroms and Triceratons are amazing concepts. One thing I wish we could have explored would be the reason why the Federation appeared human, lightyears away from Earth... was Earth a long-lost colony? A seeded planet? What?

Yes, I do. Those arcs are a must-have for pretty much any turtleverse (though I don't think the original films could've pulled it off & I'm glad they didn't try).

Yes, grounded martial arts and then sci-fi heavy is something not many franchises can pull off and TMNT pulls it off without problems.

I think I'm a little different from some in that for me, my favorite part of TMNT isn't so much the story or the scenario as it is the characters. And I think the personalities of the main characters are so strong that you can generally drop them into any type of setting, from NYC to Japan to outer space to the Old West and make it work. I think that's a huge part of why the TMNT has so much longevity and why you can tell so many different stories with them. Like it has a core concept and a basic theme but you can be really, really broad with it.

As long as it's good story telling, it's fine. Take Vol. 4, it wasn't the science fiction part that made it dull, it was the pacing.

The second film should have tried TCRI instead of TGRI.

They couldn't, there was a dispute over the rights to that name. All for the best anyway, given the more grounded approach.

The first film already has that, and it's an OK start. The extraterrestrial orgin of the ooze was supposed to be it's secret, and instead that was toned down to the mutation an accident (could still have been both accident and extraterrestrial origin).

I enjoy all of them I've seen.

Yes, I enjoyed the "Turtles in Space" stories that I've watched in the OT and 2003 series, even though I'm not a big fan of scifi tv shows set in space and outside of Earth. I guess I like that it's balanced well with the other themes of tmnt. I haven't read the comics or watched most of the 2012 cartoon, so I can't comment on those.

No. I have Star Wars for that.

I prefer my turtles in NYC or any other places in the world.

I accept such ideas too, as long as the ooze is of extraterrestrial origin.

Didn't like "Turtles in Space" in the 2003 show. It just didn't hold my interest, which is why I'm leery about it for the Nick show. But given that the show has people aboard who are faithful to the franchise, I'm excited to see what they come up with and how it's executed.

When I first saw the Turtles In Space arc from the 4Kids series, I wanted it to be done because I wanted an explanation for how Shredder picked up his decapitated head and walked off. When I go back and watch the episodes again, I do find them to very enjoyable.

TMNT can go anywhere and do anything, space, time, dimensions, it's all cool.

The Turtles going into space is inevitable given the Utroms/Krang/The Kraang, etc. exist in every series.

Once you bring alien brains into the mix going into space is inevitable.

Did OT turtles ever went to space? I've never seen an episode..

As long it doesn't drag a whole season like 4kids..oh wait Nick plans to do just that, right? *facepalm* But I guess Mikey can become "smart" when he goes outerspace.

Are you being serious? They traveled to Dimension X and/or outer space in countless episodes. Not to mention all the random aliens who visited the Earth.

How does it drag diwn a season, and how is it facepalm worthy of them to take one of the most popular arcs among the fan base.

The crime here is we have yet to get a good TMNT movie where they get into a lasergun fight at a space bar and steal hovercars.

Movies don't have the budget for that, especially not back in the 90's. You're talking about a TMNT movie with a Star Wars like budget, it'll never happen.

It already happened. The first Ninja Turtles film has a higher budget then the first Star Wars film. TMNT II has a higher budget then Empire Strikes Back. TMNT 2007 has a higher budget than Return of the Jedi. TMNT 2014 has a higher budget than any of the Star Wars prequels.

Movies are already like 75% CG, may as well do something cool with it.

my favorite Turtles in space so far has been the original Mirage #4-7 story arc,
though from what the Nick series has shown so far theirs promises to be lots of fun! :)

i think the early seed of Space Heroes planted in season 1 really has me most excited! :D

Well the first episode of the Nick space arc aired, and it was about what I expected. Looks like they'll be doing a loose adaption of the Mirage/4kids Triceraton arc as well as other space shenanigans similar to all previous Turtle sci-fi stories.

I loved pretty much all of the 4Kids episodes set in space and alternate dimensions. The first 4-5 episodes of season 5 are one of my favorite arcs. I also liked Battle Nexus.

From what I remember of Mirage, it was solid. Basically like the 4Kids adaptation of it, except darker for obvious reasons. But no, the 4kids adaptation of it being more toned down and kid friendlier doesn't bother me at all.

In the FW series, I recall liking most space episodes as well, especially those set in Dimension X inside the Technodrome. And ofc, there's Planet of the Turtleoids, which is a classic two-parter.

I think space arcs and single episodes are good to take a break off the Turtles fighting street gangs and the foot/Shredder. After all, sci-fi is one of TMNT's main genres.

Yea, there's a lot of untapped potential in the TMNT franchise. More themes should definitely be explored. TMNT has the big problem of not being able to move past Shredder, it seems. So whenever there's a bunch of episodes without him being anywhere in sight, many people start begging to have him back.

The best thing Mirage did was kill Shredder immediately, all the most interesting stories exist long after he is dead. It's ok to bring him back like, once, maybe.

Like that alien family that accidentally teleported a Turtle and Rocksteady. You got the exceptions to the rules of Earthlings!

Agreed. Though IDW has made enjoyable Shredder stories. Otherwise I don't like seeing him in excess.

The OT Turtles in Dimension X episodes are among my favorites. I need to break out my DVDs again instead of seeing them on Youtube. :P

I didn't find it weird at all. The Turtles are quite human, after all. It's not hard to relate to them at all, even after all these years. Maybe that's why I like them so much.

I like Season 4's Dimension X story a lot, especially with Vernon in that alien singles bar. :lol:

I love any kind of turtles in space story. Long live Intergalactic Wrestling. I think it would be neat if the Nick series talked that little story.
