[Rise of the TMNT] Who has your favorite (or least favorite) character design?

As I've examined all of the artwork that have been unveiled so far, I've noticed that I can't really decide which character has, in my opinion, the best overall character design, as they all have certain aspects that look visually unappealing, at least to me.

However, out of all the characters, the character with my least favorite design is ...

*My apologies, Mr. Suriano, but I must confess.*

I agree with the part in bold. Leo's red marks (above his eyes, yet under his mask) make him look mysteriously mischievous. He looks like someone who's out to do heinous deeds.

That's somewhat ... disturbing, at least to me. o_o

Maybe it's because of his head shape (pointy on the top, angled at the bottom), but I find Leonardo's overall facial structure to be extremely jarring to look at. He has the face of a creepy jester/ clown. (Although, his default expression [a smirk] may be the underlying cause of that.) It ... just doesn't look pleasant to me. I'm sorry.

Hopefully, it'll get rounded out in the future.

Sorry. I just don't like his design. :(

In your opinion, who has your favorite (or least favorite) character design?

Discuss your thoughts and opinions below.

Vicky82 03-19-2018 02:35 PM

In order

Favourite design is Mikey, he just looks a mix of 2k3 Mikey and Nick Mikey.

Then it's

April
Leo
Raph
Donnie

Least favourite design is Splinter.

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy 03-19-2018 02:37 PM

Donatello.

Stop with the "weak nerd turtle with glasses" crap.

FredWolfLeonardo 03-19-2018 02:40 PM

My most to least favourites are:

Raph
Mikey/Donnie (tied)
Splinter
April
Leonardo

I don't think Leos design is bad by any means, but I agree that he is a bit too lanky/angular looking and the combination of his red marks and creepy expression doesn't help things.

Rise Raph I absolutely love. His design and voice keep on reminding me of Maui from Moana for some strange reason

Aaronardo 03-19-2018 02:51 PM

Mikey looks pretty good from certain angles, but Raph probably has my favorite overall design.

Whoever decided that design for Donnie needs to be slapped at least twice. All the tech bull all over his back didn't look good at all in Bayturtles, why would it look good now? And the swollen head... just, what a disaster.

newfan 03-19-2018 03:10 PM

Mikey is my most liked design.
Splinter is the least, the angry expression he was pulling on that image didn't help him, will have to see a calmer face.

As for comments I've seen on Donnie's head shape, I do look at it and think it's missing a bolt, sorry, I'm not trying to troll, but that comes to mind when I look at the shape.

CyberCubed 03-19-2018 03:50 PM

Probably Splinter.

But...Don's not wearing glasses. He has goggles, but those are the same things 2k3 Don wore in a lot of episodes.

Xiewin 03-19-2018 03:57 PM

Leo
Mikey
Raph
Donnie.

I like them all, except for Donnie. Why is his head shaped like a box? And he has too much tech, goggles are fine but why make his entire shell electronic?

And Raphael would be higher on this list if it wasn't for his enormous size. He's bigger than all his brothers combined.

IndigoErth 03-19-2018 03:59 PM

Worst... Splinter is a given. (Christ what the heck happened there. Is this the Yoshi who was mutated with a mix of rat and candle wax? He mutated then immediately half melted?)

No best... others are just some improvement over Splinter to some degree or another.

Powder 03-19-2018 04:04 PM

Not sure whose look I like best. There are new qualities about each that appeal to me. Maybe I lean ever so slightly in Raph's favor? I can't say for sure.

Donnie is definitely the worst, for me. Long dome, eyebrows, tech-junk, bleh. I really like the others, though!

If you mean overall rather than just between the 4 turtles, April either ties with or surpasses Donnie. Mostly for her hair/glasses, which I wish they'd have picked different styles for, & the fact she's bat-wielding now (that counts as part of the design in my book).

neatoman 03-19-2018 05:40 PM

I'm fine with how April, Meat Sweats, Leo and Mikey look. Donnie, Raph, Splinter and Draxum look a little too weird.

I actually have somewhat mixed feelings on Splinter to be honest. I like that he's back to being short and grey. However, I don't like the flat face and I don't get why he's fat, did they want to combine him with the ancient one? It does kinda look like a mash-up of the two.

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/...20180201091918

And I'm not really a fan of the top knot returning from the PD movies. Same issue I have with Raph and Don, I don't want to be reminded of OotS.

IndigoErth 03-19-2018 06:27 PM

The difference between those two versions... :ohwell:

It's like Splinter 25 years later, having given up on the training and become out of shape, and is presently suffering from a case of rabies they naturally lack any ability to cure. (So the Turtles keep him locked out once it progresses and fear for the lives. Until he croaks from it. edit: Actually that would make a fun TMNT horror story. lol Cujo meets The Shining, plus martial arts. )

Wildcat 03-20-2018 12:19 AM

Least would be Don for the same reason of the head which I mentioned when they were first revealed.

I don’t hate it overall. It’s just the head looks too much like Frankenstein’s monster. If they brought it a tad down it would make a huge difference.

I like all of them. The Don thing is just one minor flaw. Which probably wasn’t intentional. Just made it a bit too tall/square.

Shellington 03-20-2018 01:48 PM

For me the worst esigns are Leo, Donnie and Splinter.

Leo for his red marks, Splinter for his nonathletic look and Donnie for his swollen skull.

(Ironically, I enjoy Donnie carrying his tech/goggles with him.)

Splinter is the worst (yet).

TheJ-manTurtleMan 03-21-2018 12:17 AM

Donatello is the least appealing to me. Don't care for his weird looking head. I love Leo's design though, he looks smarmy and sarcastic, and with Ben Schwartz voicing him, I'm sure he will be. I also love his red eye marks, all the turtles seem to have natural marks on them which I like.

Papenbrook 03-21-2018 04:29 AM

I don't know. Donatello's head appears to resemble a rectangle, not a square ...

Rooish 03-22-2018 08:49 PM

I like Donatello's outfit, but there is something very wrong with his face.

Mikey's design is the least offensive?

And April is fine.

KillCrites 03-23-2018 05:58 AM

I really have no problem with Donatello tbh, besides his huge eyebrows he has for some reason. My favorite is Leo and my least favorite is Splinter, but I'm sure even his design will grow on me after we see him in action.

If you aren't the biggest fan of magic, see it as the "Donatello series" instead.

Coola Yagami 03-28-2018 09:34 AM

I just noticed Mikey has like... pizza tattoos and other weird nonsense all over his shell and plastron. Overkill much?

I'm indifferent to all the designs but accept it as just a brand new show and take on the characters. It's not the classic characters, and it's not meant to be.

Between the Bay films and this one I don't want future creators to think the turtles don't work unless they have tons of extra crap all over them. The fact they're murated turtles that can fight and exist in a normal human world should be all the gimmick you need.

Papenbrook 03-28-2018 10:54 AM

Well, I've seen the teaser, and let me just say, I ... still don't like Leonardo's design. I don't like it at all.

In fact, I think his design looks even worse in animation. I don't know how to accurately describe it, so I'll just say this:
"When it's in motion, it tends to look somewhat inconsistent and sloppy. Consequently, it has an uncanny feel to it."
That's all I can really say, at least at the moment.

Chris 03-30-2018 11:32 PM

From favourite to least;

Mikey
Leo
April (not fond of her hair style or glasses but overall ok)
Raph
Don
Splinter

Leonardo2003 03-31-2018 04:09 PM

My Top 3:
Donnie
Raph
Leo

Two worst are definitely splinter and Mikey.

CyberCubed 03-31-2018 04:11 PM

Leo, Mike and Don all look fine to me. Raph is a little too big for my taste but I might get used to it as I see him in motion. Splinter is the worst though.

shihe 04-01-2018 11:39 AM

LOVE
April
Leo

LIKE
Mikey
Meatsweats
Origami Ninja

GETTING USED TO...
Donatello
Raphael
Baron D.

DISLIKE
Splinter

Xiewin 04-01-2018 12:31 PM

After seeing the teaser a few more times, I actually really like all of them, with Raph and Leo being my favorites.

ninjawolf10 04-02-2018 02:12 PM

I think Mike's design is probably the best with Leo coming second.

Raph looks too big to me in comparison to the others, and like others have said Donnie has a very square head.

Splinter looks like someone stood on him, and the top knot is awful. I'm kind of sad really, cause he's my favourite. I don't get why it's hard to make him look decent :tcry:

2003 was the ultimate for me, but I didn't mind the 2012 look either. Hopefully they'll grow on me...

Papenbrook 04-02-2018 09:27 PM

Yeesh ...

I hope that the animation will be smoothed out.

Powder 04-02-2018 10:14 PM

Are you just complaining about the buffering on your PC? :tlol:

You know you want a piece of that... Like several seasons worth. :trazz:

Mostly I'm just laughing at Raph in that image. It's like he got run through a Photoshop filter that just turned him into simplified shapes. Moved the intensity a little too far to the right.

Papenbrook 04-03-2018 07:41 PM

Regarding Splinter's character design, it appears that someone has voiced a few complaints about it.

Why Does Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dip Into Racist Asian Stereotypes?

Posted by Brett
Nickelodeon‘s new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has come under criticism for numerous reasons: changes to the dynamic of the Turtles, the stylized look of the series, and drastic difference in the Turtles’ depictions. I have no opinion, nor really care about all of that. Beyond all of that, the thing that stood out to me about the brand new trailer is the use of the Fu Manchu/Yellow Peril stereotype in the character of Splinter.

In the first official teaser released Friday, we get a look at what we can expect from the series and a better idea of the characters. We also get a look at Splinter who, with his “slanted/slit” eyes, buck teeth, and delivery of lines, is hard to not see a racist Asian stereotype. There’s even a top knot!

This ethnic stereotype (which has no place in a kids show, let alone modern society) has its roots in “Yellow Peril”, Western imperialism, racism, and led to exclusionary laws enacted against immigrants here in the United States. In entertainment, it's common and popularized in characters such as Fu Manchu and Charlie Chan, both of which tread in stereotypical looks that still persist today. One scratches their head and wonders why the creators of this show thought it was appropriate in 2018.

While there are movements and individuals fighting for better representation of Asians in entertainment, to see a kids’ animated show perpetuate this hurtful imagery for a new generation is not only misguided - it's downright regressive and has no place on television, let alone Nickelodeon, which has had a history of excellent children’s programming.

You can watch the video below and see the problematic speech patterns at the 44 second mark and 53 second mark.

Click for the source.

Personally, I can understand what this individual was conveying, and I can empathize what this individual was venting.

Their concerns are valid. I hope that the creators take their time and consider possible unfortunate implications that they might depict within their work.

Powder 04-03-2018 08:20 PM

I appreciate where this Well Intended White Guy is coming from, but he's reaching, IMO.

Splinter's eyes are closed in that clip, his buck teeth are because he's a rat, & the top-knot is a staple of Samurai "fashion". He's also voiced by an Asian American (by way of Canada) who I'm assuming didn't take issue with how the character is being portrayed and/or developed the style of voice himself.

Dude's just looking for something "problematic" to whine about.

FredWolfLeonardo 04-03-2018 08:21 PM

I knew people would criticize Rise Splinter for his aesthetics and such, but never did I imagine that he would qualify as racist for some people.

IndigoErth 04-03-2018 08:27 PM

But hey, it's the series that has something for almost everyone... to hate. :trazz:

I mean, maybe this guy is reaching a bit much, but honestly, so is this series, so you reap what you sow, I guess.

Papenbrook 04-04-2018 01:40 PM

Nickelodeon has just released a new Rise Turtles' video.

Spoiler:

On the thumbnail image, Donatello's goggles are over his eyes.

shredder orokusaki 04-05-2018 06:42 AM

April is my favorite because i like girls with glassses. And turtles are my LEAST FAVORITE!

Papenbrook 04-05-2018 02:16 PM

So, I was studying this image.

Wow! :o Raph really does look huge, at least in comparison to/with the other Turtles'.

IndigoErth 04-05-2018 02:41 PM

Manholes def should not work out too well...

Also, the shadow shorts bug me, extending out as far as they do. It's like some kind of upper thigh light deflection spell was cast on them. The use of such a spell however remains a mystery.

I'm so ninja, even my junk exists in the shadows. (Even against the laws of physics. Is that physics?) There's a quip for you, uh...Leo.
