What's in a name....?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but i was just wondering why is Splinter called Splinter? I mean, we know the how the turtles got their names (the whole artist thing) so where did his name come from. He did name himself right? So what was the inspiration...?

Bowser_Koopa 11-09-2003 06:22 PM

they just started calling him like that when they were baby mutants

Machias Banshee 11-09-2003 06:25 PM

because of his ability of board-breaking... :D

Bowser_Koopa 11-09-2003 06:36 PM

http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/mirage/one/pg17.htm they never say if that was his name or if thats when they started calling him that

I assume since Splinter gained the ability to speak before the turtles, he would have introduced himself. And the turtles gained their ability to speak, by listening to him talk. Hamato Yoshi obvious named his pet Rat 'Splinter'. Because Splinter says in the flashbacks, "They spoke, my name". And even in the original comic, Splinter's flashback has him saying: "One of you actually said a word...my name!!" :)

Cascadia 11-09-2003 09:35 PM

according to Eastman and Laird, they were looking at comic books. The teacher's name was stick so they called the turtles' sensei splinter.

Machias Banshee 11-09-2003 09:56 PM

DareDevil!!! :D

Cascadia 11-09-2003 09:58 PM

thank you....i could not think of the character's name.

Buslady 11-09-2003 11:58 PM

It's a joke on I think a Daredevil character (or some other comic book character) on a guy named Stick. So E&L thought a spoof on that would be funny, they called him Splinter.

OH WELL ya beat me to it hahahaa

Savanti Romero 11-10-2003 12:09 AM

Was the DareDevil character a good guy or bad?

Bowser_Koopa 11-10-2003 09:07 AM

what does splinter mean? does it have something to do with a stick?¿

Splinter 11-10-2003 09:27 AM

If you want to know more about the influence for Splinter, here is a bio for the character Stick from Daredevil. :)

Cool orgin for "Splinter." Stick seemed to have a lot in common with DareDevil, being blind. The bad part; you could take it that just a splinter of Stick's skill is with Splinter.

Pizza Face 11-10-2003 10:54 AM

In one of the old comics, it say splinter got his name from a literal splinter. It got stuck in his paw and became infected. A spirit of some kind told him that from now on, he would be know to the world as Splinter.

heretic888 11-10-2003 11:18 AM

ahem

Splinter's name is a parody of the character Stick from Daredevil... in much the same way that the Foot are a parody of the Hand.

I have never read this "splinter spirit" comic that Pizza Face is talking about. My guess is that it is not a "canonical" storyline.

WHAT DOES SPLINTER MEAN?

Karpo_007 11-10-2003 02:21 PM

Tiny, sharp piece of wood. Usage: " I got a splinter in my finger".
