What's in a name....?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but i was just wondering why is Splinter called Splinter? I mean, we know the how the turtles got their names (the whole artist thing) so where did his name come from. He did name himself right? So what was the inspiration...?

I assume since Splinter gained the ability to speak before the turtles, he would have introduced himself. And the turtles gained their ability to speak, by listening to him talk. Hamato Yoshi obvious named his pet Rat 'Splinter'. Because Splinter says in the flashbacks, "They spoke, my name". And even in the original comic, Splinter's flashback has him saying: "One of you actually said a word...my name!!"

according to Eastman and Laird, they were looking at comic books. The teacher's name was stick so they called the turtles' sensei splinter.

It's a joke on I think a Daredevil character (or some other comic book character) on a guy named Stick. So E&L thought a spoof on that would be funny, they called him Splinter.

OH WELL ya beat me to it hahahaa

If you want to know more about the influence for Splinter, here is a bio for the character Stick from Daredevil.

Cool orgin for "Splinter." Stick seemed to have a lot in common with DareDevil, being blind. The bad part; you could take it that just a splinter of Stick's skill is with Splinter.

In one of the old comics, it say splinter got his name from a literal splinter. It got stuck in his paw and became infected. A spirit of some kind told him that from now on, he would be know to the world as Splinter.

ahem

Splinter's name is a parody of the character Stick from Daredevil... in much the same way that the Foot are a parody of the Hand.

I have never read this "splinter spirit" comic that Pizza Face is talking about. My guess is that it is not a "canonical" storyline.

Tiny, sharp piece of wood. Usage: " I got a splinter in my finger".
